When The Weed Meets The Speed With WEEDEATER

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris Peters,After managing to steer clear of this side of the world since 2016, North Carolina stoner/sludge/doom outfit Weedeater have declared 2024 the year of the Weed as they prepare to traverse Australia with their good mates King Parrot for the When The Weed Meets The Speed Australian Tour kicking off on November 6.No strangers to touring overseas together - as recent as last US Summer and as far back as 2015 - this will be the two band's first tour of this country together in what promises to be an entertaining, energy charged and musically brutal run of shows. While polar opposites of the musical spectrum, Weedeater and King Parrot connect where it matters. Live, loud, and in front of an audience.Just to make sure the needle of chaos pushes into the red, Astrodeath and Choof will join the party as the bands play 11 shows in 12 days from one side of the country to the other.HEAVY spent some time with Weedeater for a chat ahead of the tour, starting with why the boys have neglected Australian fans for the last eight years."We're not attempting to neglect you," they assured. "I'm not sure if you're aware, but it's kind of far away from where we live (laughs). We love Australia. We've always had a good time there, but it's not easy to get there, and it costs a lot of money to do so. It's a big pain in the ass, but when we get there, we have a damn good time. I would love to ask you a question. Why have you not come to North Carolina and visited me?"One point Weedeater. Zero points HEAVY.In the full interview we discuss what to expect from Weedeater's shows, their friendship with King Parrot, some tales from the road, their brand of hot sauce and if any will be making its way Down Under, the term 'sludge-toned tar-heels' and what it means, new music, three songs to listen to in order to know the band better, future plans and more.KING PARROT + WEEDEATER + ASTRODEATH + CHOOF“WHEN THE WEED MEETS THE SPEED” AUSTRALIAN TOUR, NOVEMBER 2024Wednesday, November 6th - Mo's Desert Clubhouse, Gold Coast QLDThursday, November 7th - The Triffid, Brisbane QLDFriday, November 8th - King Street Warehouse, Newcastle, NSWSaturday, November 9th - Manning Bar, Sydney, NSWSunday, November 10th - The Basement, Canberra ACTTuesday, November 12th - Volta, Ballarat VICWednesday, November 13th – Barwon Club, Geelong VICThursday, November 14th – Singing Bird, Frankston VIC (All Ages)Friday, November 15th – Max Watts, Melbourne VICSaturday, November 16th – Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide, SASunday, November 17th – Magnet House, Perth, WATickets on sale now: www.kingparrot.oztix.com.auBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Family Values With BRENNAN & AUSTIN MILETO From SISTERS DOLL

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersWhile the term family is often bandied about in the world of music, it is generally used as more of an affectionate term when used to describe the bond that develops between band members. Not often is it used in the literal term. But when it is, you can be sure that you are in for something special.Think Angus and Malcolm Young from AC/DC, Andrew Farriss, Jon Farriss, and Tim Farriss (INXS), Eddie and Alex Van Halen to name but a few, but while the natural chemistry of siblings is a powerful force when harnessed by verse, it is an all too rare occurrence.Looking through that list, there are a few bands with three family members spread here and there, but I have yet to come across a band from the rock persuasion that is made up of four members of the same family. Until now.Australia's own Sisters Doll, (Brennan, Austin and Bryce Mileto) have expanded their numbers by one to include younger brother Sage as part of their line-up moving forward, with the newest devotee to rock and roll showcasing his wares on the new track Don't Give Up On Us, with the music video announcing his addition to the band's legions of fans.Brennan and Austin both sat down with HEAVY to talk about the new song and… well, family."It's done really well so far," Brennan enthused of the new track. "We did a bit of a livestream before the video dropped to build the suspense and build the hype, because we really believe in this song. It's kind of been one of our favourites from the album. It is more of the ballad from the album, but so far we've got a great response. A lot of good responses on the video too, which is exciting. Obviously, it unveils our new bass player, which is kind of the talking point at the moment. Having Sage in there has sparked a few more people to jump on and have a look - especially people back home. Compared to the last one Change, which we did last year, it's probably doing a little bit better."In the full interview, the boys discussed a range of personal and professional topics. They talked about the positive response to their new album's ballad and the unveiling of their new bass player, Sage. They also discussed the strategic decision to release the audio before the video to boost streaming numbers and create anticipation for the music video.Additionally, they highlighted the need to strategically unveil Sage to maintain the surprise for the show. They also delved into the meaning behind their new song Don't Give Up on Us, highlighting its dual significance related to relationships and the band's perseverance.Furthermore, they provided insights into their plans for the album launch show at Max Watts on January 25 next year, indicating that it will feature a mix of new and existing songs, with a focus on gauging audience reception for future performances. They also discussed the evolution of their performances, emphasizing their dedication to delivering high energy shows and their commitment to creating a memorable experience for the audience. The conversation also covered the band's upcoming plans, including the release of their new single, pre-orders for the new album, and their upcoming shows and tours, showcasing the band's excitement for the future.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

For the third installment of our series discussing the history of attempts to unionize members of the military, based largely on the book Left Face: Soldier Unions and Resistance Movements in Modern Armies by David Cortright and Max Watts, we discuss the Dutch. From the 1960s to the 80s, with the Dutch military squarely in the middle of NATO's confrontation with the USSR, multiple organizations were formed attempting to unionize soldiers. We discuss how the Dutch unions, especially the VVDM, seem to have had more success with straightforward union organizing issues than most, but that success came with strict limits. The Shape Of Things To Come With STEVEN MERRY Of BE'LAKOR

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 22, 2023 9:02

Interview by Kris PetersAustralian melodic death metal machine Be'Lakor began to reach an international audience following the release of their third studio album Of Breath & Bone in 2012.It is an album the band themselves admit "helped us to grow and find new audiences as a band" and one which laid the platform for a global assault that continues to gain traction to this day.A worldwide success which garnered rave reviews from both fans and critics alike, Of Breath & Bone remains a turning point of Be'Lakor's career and will now be officially commemorated with a one off special performance at Max Watts in Melbourne on February 24 to celebrate its 10th anniversary.Be'Lakor - for the first and probably last time ever - will pay homage to the album by playing it in its entirety, mixing popular tracks such as Abeyance, In Parting and Remnants with some of the other lesser known tracks that combined to create something special.Keyboard player Steven Merry joined HEAVY to talk more about the show."It was gonna be November last year, which would have been officially ten years since the album came out," he began, "but then we had to move it to February this year which technically means it's a slightly late birthday for it. I can't believe ten years have gone by since the album came out."Be'Lakor will be playing Of Breath & Bone from start to finish, with Merry smiling at the thought."It's the only time we've done it and we won't be doing it again," he laughed, "so I think it does make it a pretty special gig in that way that it's definitely a one off thing."In the full interview, Steven talks about what to expect from the show, what sorts of things the album opened up for the band when it came out, playing songs they may have never played live before, if it has stood the test of time musically, which tracks have grown on him over the years, the other bands playing and why they were chosen and more.

Ten Years Of Extremities With MATT YOUNG From KING PARROT

HEAVY Music Interviews

Ten years ago an album called Bite Your Head Off was released by a little known Australian grindcore band called King Parrot. When I say little known, they already had a passionate and loyal fanbase that was growing by the minute, but the band had yet to reach the almost crossover mainstream acceptance which surprisingly opens for them today.Their debut EP the previous year, The Stench Of Hardcore Pub Trash had offered glimpses of King Parrot's ferocity and musicianship, spawning the singles Epileptic Butcher and Psycotherapy & Valium, but at that stage that's all it was.Potential.Then Bite Your Head Off landed and smacked every person within wingspan square between the eyes with its blending of metal, punk and attitude that pretty much overnight created a new genre all of its own and King Parrot were well and truly on their way to taking flight. The first single from that album, Shit On The Liver, came with a film clip that was both brutal and downright hilarious and introduced the Parrot boys - and particularly the hairy walking one liner that also happened to play bass - Mr Slatts Everyday to a generation of music lovers that had previously only ever flirted with music of such extreme nature. That film clip racked up the numbers practically overnight and King Parrot started touring their proverbial asses off not long after, seemingly not content until they had converted the entire planet to their way of thinking. Now, ten years after that initial shot fired in anger, King Parrot are inviting the King Parrot Army to celebrate the birth of what will be - if not already is - an Australian metal band of world repute comprising a bunch of five larrikins who just want to have fun and play music together with a special anniversary show at Max Watts in Melbourne on October 29 where the band will play that album in full for the first time ever.HEAVY sat down for a special one on one with vocalist Matt Young to discuss the journey so far. With King Parrot playing the ferociously quick debut album in it's entiurety we start by asking Youngy what the band plans on doing after that 20 minutes of album time is done."We've been jamming the last few weeks," he laughed, "getting all the songs together. There's a bunch of songs on there that we've never played... we've never actually played the title track of the album (laughs). So we've been working on that which has been great. We're playing that for the first time and there's a bunch of other songs on there that we haven't played in close to 8 or 10 years so it's been great just re-learning them all and putting it all into a set and a way that flows really well. Just going 'fuck, that's actually cool and works well', and it doesn't have any of the songs from the other two albums or the latest EP so we were really happy with how it's come out. The running time obviously drags out, we might play a couple of other bits and pieces at the end... We just love playing live, that's the main thing for us. We just love getting up there and doing it. It's gonna be a lot of fun. We've put a lot of work into it so it's gonna be good."It's fair to say Bite Your Head Off was - and still is - unlike anything heard in Australian metal for a long time so we press Youngy on whether they intentionally set out to shock and redefine music in this country or if it was more a case of satisfying themselves."A little bit of both," he smiled. "I think initially there was a lot of tension and anger. We used the band as an outlet to express all that stuff that we were... me in particular, I was having a lot of life changes at that time. I was getting clean off drugs and booze around that time when we were starting the band and writing that record so there was a lot of stuff coming out of me. It was like projectile craziness. It was such a good outlet and to be able to play it live as much as we did at that time around Australia and hone those songs in the live setting - probably before we even recorded them. It's like when you do that first album, as a band you get the opportunity to write the songs, play the songs live and you probably haven't quite recorded it yet so you can kind of get away with it. Then when you go to do the subsequent albums it changes, you know? You get to do that and hone those songs for the first album and you get to play them live a lot, road test them and that sort of stuff and people don't know who you are, and then when you get past that you go 'we've gotta write these new songs, and we've gotta do it all in the studio and we might be able to play one or two live here or there', but you don't get to road test them as much as what you would with the first record. That's been my experience anyway."In the full interview Youngy talks about the other bands playing at the anniversary show and why they are there, the thought process between the EP and album and how they capitalised on its success, the video for Shit On The Liver and how it came to life, King Parrot's first ever chaotic show in Far North Queensland, some of his memories of making Bite Your Head Off, the opportunities it created, a thing about each of his band mates that you might not know and more.

Australia has produced countless Heavy Rock/ Metal bands over the years and every now and then one of them seems to suddenly reappear again, this being a gosh darn good thing for punters Australia wide. Not to say they disappeared by any means, but when The Mark of Cain announced a new tour for August/September 2022 the diehard fans of these (genre defining) Adelaide heroes breathed a sigh of relief. You see, The Mark of Cain are an especially important Australian band with a back catalogue that speaks for itself, and in a live setting it is a different type of heavy! To put it simply, ‘a different kind of tension ‘22' could not have come at a better time, with venues playing catch up on the last two years on the back of a relatively dead music scene and what better way to“slam” back into the power of live music than with The Mark of Cain?Upon speaking to John Scott (guitarist/singer/founding member) the mood was simple, as his genuine yearning to play live had reached its peak. Like everyone, he and his band mates have been waiting, but now the days are getting fewer and fewer. With the tour kicking off at the (now) iconic Max Watts in Melbourne with a string of shows all up and down the East, South and Southwest Coasts and with an already Sold-Out hometown show at The Gov in Adelaide to boot, this tour is set to slay leaving ear drums rattled and fans souls nourished for a little while longer. If you are a well-versed fan, head along, if you haven't heard of The Mark of Cain, do yourself a favour and grab a ticket and witness pure Heavy Rock fury in all its awesomeness!

Excuse the direct wording used to start this off but let's be honest at the time our mind sets were, here comes another tour, another international band spreading its metaphorical wings for its first ever tour down under and yes we were bloody excited and ready to have our ear canals punished yet again by another insanely talented band! For so long us Australian lovers of metal and all things heavy had been spoilt rotten with countless tours of nearly every heavy metal band this world has produced gracing us with their presence and prowess year after year. Now before a hand reaches out of the page and proceeds to choke me, I must point out, us Australian's on the East Coast are the spoilt ones.... now the breathing can get back to normal and we can continue to get into what very well may be one of the coolest ways for a live album to come to life and to continue existing until the end of (our) times in the form of being released on all platforms. For the Ukrainian four piece this wasn't just any tour this was a debut, an adventure into uncharted waters and a test (of sorts) to see how far a reach the almighty Jinjer had spread its version of progressive, abrasive and downright gritty metal sound to the said metal masses! Now unless you were stranded on a deserted island (in which I strongly suggest you return immediately for a little while longer) or you were the only human left on earth without the "interwebs" then you all know what happened at the end of March in 2020. But let's not focus on that because us metal heads are positive folk and you readers want to know what the hell I'm building up to here! Well a chat with Eugene Abdiukhanov, the bass player of Jinjer who was able to give us a real insight into their latest offering entitled Alive In Melbourne. It was early March and Jinjer were making their way around this mighty continent at a rate of knots that only few can maintain. As they headed into Melbourne's iconic Max Watts (formerly the HiFi Bar for those playing at home) to grace the locals with another blistering show a proposal was given to the quartet, a single human would offer and record their Melbourne live set in full! "We didn't even plan to make it, it was this spontaneous decision, we decided to do the recording during the soundcheck in Melbourne" Eugene informs us "Somebody just showed up and told us there is this guy who wants to do the video, make a video recording and we said ok we will make audio on our side, and this is how it happened! There was no percolation there was no plan, making a recording in Melbourne wasn't on our list at all, and here we are with a live album" he addedJust like that Alive In Melbourne is born out of a late off the cuff decision, and it captured what would be for a select few thousand metal fans a chunk of what would be the last international band we would see still to this day! "It's important to know but on the other hand it's the biggest thing because I wish things were different, I wish everyone was enjoying other bands shows who would have been on tour, in a perfect world/ parallel universe I wish things were like that but it is what it is and we need to be strong and go through this shape happening now and I'm sure the world will be able to get back to normal life!" Eugene pleadingly adds. With that being said we're all learning what is becoming a new normal and it's no secret that the world will be different after the fact. But will this pause (in a live music sense) stifle our love for live music?! Well, speaking for others isn't a normal pass time for me but on this occasion, I will stand on an imaginary soapbox and scream "Hell no it won't" *insert fist in air here. When asking Eugene the reply was deep and honest;"I cannot wait for this, I'm looking forward to the day where I will go on stage in front of 1000 people the same way we did in Melbourne, no masks, everyone shoulder to shoulder like fish in a can and we will start playing and they will start moshing and there will be this energy, this is what I'm waiting for" This is the point where it must be noted on how levelled Eugene is as an artist displaying examples of being no different to the fans that endorse Jinjer for what they have produced thus far in their 11 year career. Not only does this transpire during a live set but one on one it is clear! "I do not see the point of soaring in the sky, there is no elitism, and this is what we have been baring in these bands since the very beginning, there is no point to look down at people. A lot of bands these days do because they play very well, they play a lot of notes (laughs) but who cares how many notes you play it’s a matter of weather people back the music, this is the hardcore attitude which we have, and we will always have because of our roots and our foundation. None of us (in Jinjer) started playing progressive metal musicians, we played hardcore, we played nu-metal we played music that moves you and that’s it and throughout the years we learned to play our musical instruments. We ballooned into progressive metal band and we started playing something difficult and complicated although the true nature of use, the core is still there and its hardcore! The main thing is making people move, to make people mosh and people enjoy it at a live show, this is the message”. Alive in Melbourne is raw, energetic and captures the true essence of a heavy live show. The pure ferocity of the recording will have the listener engaged in its clarity and in its constant bulldozer loads of sound! Including the intro and outro it totals 17 tracks and does not let up the entire time! From moments were singer Tatiana Shmailyuk addresses the crowd with a sassy “Who’s gonna be the one? Hmmm I wonder?” before belting into said track whist Eugene Abdiukhanov (Bass) and Vladislav Ulasevich (Drums) lock in near impossible rhythm the entire time whilst Roman Ibramkhalilov (Guitar) delivers pounding riff after pounding riff! “This is the point, music must be true, music must be open and must come naturally, there’s no over thinking, it’s either yes or no, there is nothing in between” Eugene adds whilst talking about their live show. Now for the basic and straight forward question. What is the coolest moment you’ve ever experienced in your 9 years of being the bass player in Jinjer? “It is very hard to pick one, it’s just impossible because of all the things that are happening to us over the 9 years since I joined the band, they all were cool in its on way in its own time. You know when we were a small band playing to 30 people and just have a small old and shabby van which sometimes hard to drive because it was falling to pieces, but we did it and that was cool in its own way”. “Then we became a relatively known underground band and it was cool to play sold out concerts but for 2 to 300 people here and there and then we bring it to (and become) an internationally acclaimed band, and in the last year we’ve played these sold out tours and this year we played a sold out tour in Australia!. Coming so far from home and being our first time in Australia and seeing all these people who came just to see you and we were giving exactly what they were asking for which the music, this is a brilliant and perfect interaction from fans to the band, it’s very pure! We give them something and they give it back, this is the energy, and that is very special”. It’s no secret that times have been tough for traveling musicians with their lives going from being on the road, in the air and living out of suit cases to being stuck at home with nothing but the sounds of the world around them week in a week out. Upon paying a compliment to Eugene in regard to how connected Jinjer is to its fans a moment of emotion crept in “you know, talking to you is something that I really needed, its very motivating and you give me some hope… so thanks”. This giving one example of a touring musician’s hunger to play live again and interact with the fans that believe in them! With that we now wait and lay in hope that live music will return and that overseas bands will tour and together we can witness such an act like Jinjer again soon! But for now, we have Alive In Melbourne and it will be available November 20th via Napalm Records and the bands website. Do yourself a favour and pre order yourself a copy, it’s a must for the metal collection!

Sometimes I feel like it's just coasting and then one big sprint. What should I do? Interval intensity related to Q2: should I go full send on the first one? I'm doing a time trial and an old coach told me only to look at normalized power. Is this right? "For one it's turning ten so we obviously wanna celebrate that, but it's a really good opportunity for us," beamed Craig Mabbitt, vocalist for Escape the Fate on the eve of their Australian tour where they will be playing This War is Ours in its entirety plus a selection of their greatest hits. "Funnily enough my very first tour with Escape the Fate was Australia so for us to come full circle ten years later and for us to have the opportunity to come out there and play this album front to back to celebrate where we've been, where we've come from; the past, the present and the future is a really cool opportunity that we're all looking forward to."It would be fair to say no band ever plans on playing any of their albums in their entirety at any stage of their career when they are working on it, and Mabbitt laughs when asked if that was the case with This War is Ours."When you're in the studio writing an album you're not really thinking about the longevity of it," he smiled. "It's more like man, I hope this ends up being the biggest album with the biggest songs in the world and ends up taking over the whole world, that's kind of all you're thinking (laughs) but at the end of the day to have the album and more so the songs on an album that can touch fans for a decade but has also gained new fans is really cool."In the attached audio listen to Mabbitt go more in-depth on This War is Ours and if he thinks the messages pointed out on that album have resonated over the last decade, the troubles he went through as the new vocalist on that album plus the way he dealt with criticism, as well as the correlations between that album and their latest, I Am Human.May 28 - Amplifier Bar, PerthMay 29 - Fowlers Bar, AdelaideMay 30 - Corner Hotel, RichmondMay 31 - Max Watts, MelbourneJune 1 - Manning Bar, CamperdownJune 2 - Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle WestJune 3 - The Triffid, NewsteadKris Peters1AQ

"It was more like something to work on in the studio," explained Pain vocalist and mastermind Peter Tagtgren on the early days of the project. "I wanted to become wiser in the studio. I wanted to work with computers and samplers and all kinds of electronic stuff - only to know how to produce it. There wasn't really any bands that I was recording at the time that were using sequencers and stuff like that so I really had to invent my own band to practice and that band was Pain."Tagtren was already running his own production studio, The Abyss, at the time, and it was a fortunate cancellation in the studio that was the catalyst for Pain. Exploring what was at the time innovative and untried territory in the metal world, Tagtgren combined heavy music, electronica, and techno to create a sound that while difficult to get right, is extremely powerful and emotive and started Pain down the road which has led to many of today's bands in the same genre."I would say the second album sounds like I wanted the first album to sound like," he mused. "The first one, I don't know what happened there. I wrote two or three songs and sent them to Nuclear Blast and said hey, do you want to release this because I had a cancellation of a band for a whole month so I was free and I had already done demos on those songs so I sent them in and they said yeah, yeah, give us a whole album and we'll release it and then it became more rushed. In a couple of months, I had to write seven songs or something like that and produce it and mix it so it was a really hasty way of doing it. The second album I had more time and could figure out more of the sounds that I wanted to have in my music. From the beginning, it was really... I was into ghoully trance and techno stuff because I really loved the keyboards and synthesizer because they sounded so angry and so crazy. That was the thing for me. I wanted the same but I could never figure out how they did the sound at that time."In the attached audio Tagtgren discusses the upcoming Australian tour and how close it actually came to being cancelled, his expectations for the tour and delves deeper into how he came up with Pain's sound and where they fit in musically and the difficulties he had in establishing what was a new genre at the time plus much more. You can catch Pain at the following:Wednesday, May 23 - Badlands Bar, Perth, WAThursday, May 24 - Fowlers Live, Adelaide, SAFriday, May 25 - Max Watts, MelbourneSaturday, May 26 - Bald Faced Stag, Leichhardt, NSWSunday, May 27 - The Zoo, Brisbane, QLD
