Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Garry Gary Beers, the bassist of the legendary Australian rock band INXS. From his early beginnings, through the meteoric rise of INXS, to his current musical endeavours with AshenMoon, Garry's story is a testament to passion, resilience, and evolution in the music industry.Early Life and Musical GenesisBorn in Manly, Sydney, Australia, Garry was introduced to the world of music during his high school years. He initially picked up the acoustic guitar and formed a band with his schoolmates. A twist of fate led him to switch to the bass guitar, a decision that would shape his entire future . The transition was serendipitous, and paved the way for him to meet Andrew Farriss. Together, they formed the band Dr. Dolphin, which eventually evolved into The Farriss Brothers, and later, the globally acclaimed INXS. INXS emerged as a powerhouse in the rock and new wave scenes of the 80s and 90s. The band's unique blend of rock, pop, and dance elements resonated with audiences worldwide. Garry's bass lines became the backbone of numerous chart-topping hits, including "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," "Never Tear Us Apart," and "Suicide Blonde." Garry also co-wrote several tracks like "Listen Like Thieves," "Don't Change," and "Perfect Strangers." The band toured relentlessly and Michael Hutchence's dynamic stage presence solidified the band's reputation, leading to sales of over 70 million albums and induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Following Michael's tragic passing in 1997, INXS faced tumultuous times. Garry explored various musical avenues and in 89, during a hiatus from INXS, joined the group Absent Friends.Garry soonn relocated to Los Angeles, immersing himself in songwriting and production. His passion for craftsmanship led him to design and build his own line of bass guitars under the brand GGB Basses, merging his love for music with his skills in woodwork and electronics. Garry co-founded AshenMoon when he teamed up with fellow Australian vocalist Toby Rand. The band embarked on a journey to create a fresh yet nostalgically resonant sound. With a catalogue as extensive as INXS', there was bound to be moments in time when certain songs captured the zeitgeist attention of the music buying public and critics. Look no further than January 28th, 1988 when a humble hard working sextet from Australia hit number one on the Billboard Charts with Need You Tonight. A song, that now, sounds so familiar, crisp and radio friendly but then, a new modern twist on funk, soul and pop with sound production so cutting edge, every breath, ooh and aah sounded like Michael Hutchence was singing it to you directly from your living room. Combined with an innovative, breathtaking and cutting edge video clip, Need you Tonight put INXS into the stratosphere of superstardom and success. MTV awards ensued, world tours were booked and the album Kick had the necessary momentum to spawn 4 subsequent hit singles and international acclaim. Five years later in February 1993, a less prominent and commercially successful track was released as the fifth single to Welcome to Wherever You are, namely Beautiful Girl. A self-penned track by Andrew Farriss as an ode to new fatherhood, this restrained, mellow and resonant song showcased a maturity, subtlety and consciousness to both the INXS writing and recording process. Charting steadily if not spectacularly, the film clip by Mark Pellington of U2 and Pearl Jam fame would garner a Grammy nomination for Best Video of the Year losing out to Peter Gabriel's “Steam” clip. That aside, the social conscious messaging of the clip resonated nicely with the lyrical content whilst Michael's channeling of Lou Reed, circa The Velvet Underground era only added to its worthiness. So sit back and reminisce as we step back in time and honour two distinct but two important songs in the INXS catalogue that still resonate 37 and 32 years later respectively.

After 4.5 years, INXS: Access all Areas reaches a special milestone of 200 episodes and what better way to celebrate than commemorate the Mini Series: Never Tear Us Apart starting with a deep dive into Part One. The episode that we coined “The Ascent” where we see the band climb from humble beginnings to the career zenith of Wembley 1991. With impeccable casting and production values from Endemol Shine Australia, this iconic mini series launched on Australian TV on Sunday February 9th, 2014 and concluded the following week on February 16th to record ratings for the Channel 7 network. Filmed in Melbourne Australia with a cast of known but not overtly famous actors, Director Daina Reid elicits heartfelt and acute performances particularly from industry veteran Damon Herriman whose portrayal of INXS Manager Chris Murphy may be the shrewdest casting in many years. With a swathe of songs representing INXS' early career success in Australia, fans and the less initiated are taken into a heady and nostalgic period when music and gigs were the soundtrack and vehicle for youth culture and entertainment. Additionally, we get to see the work ethic, commitment and sacrifice of an emerging band who had the courage to leave the safety and earnings potential of Australian shores and “risk it all” by tackling the behemoth that was America. Inspiring, endearing, passionate and purposeful, go back and watch with fresh eyes and ears before listening to this podcast!! A big thank you to everyone that sent in their thanks to add this episode hearing From Tim and Andrew Farriss, Leigh Francis, our wonderful friends and patrons but not forgetting Nick Egan celebrating our achievements with a firework ending. Interview by Kris PetersWhile the term family is often bandied about in the world of music, it is generally used as more of an affectionate term when used to describe the bond that develops between band members. Not often is it used in the literal term. But when it is, you can be sure that you are in for something special.Think Angus and Malcolm Young from AC/DC, Andrew Farriss, Jon Farriss, and Tim Farriss (INXS), Eddie and Alex Van Halen to name but a few, but while the natural chemistry of siblings is a powerful force when harnessed by verse, it is an all too rare occurrence.Looking through that list, there are a few bands with three family members spread here and there, but I have yet to come across a band from the rock persuasion that is made up of four members of the same family. Until now.Australia's own Sisters Doll, (Brennan, Austin and Bryce Mileto) have expanded their numbers by one to include younger brother Sage as part of their line-up moving forward, with the newest devotee to rock and roll showcasing his wares on the new track Don't Give Up On Us, with the music video announcing his addition to the band's legions of fans.Brennan and Austin both sat down with HEAVY to talk about the new song and… well, family."It's done really well so far," Brennan enthused of the new track. "We did a bit of a livestream before the video dropped to build the suspense and build the hype, because we really believe in this song. It's kind of been one of our favourites from the album. It is more of the ballad from the album, but so far we've got a great response. A lot of good responses on the video too, which is exciting. Obviously, it unveils our new bass player, which is kind of the talking point at the moment. Having Sage in there has sparked a few more people to jump on and have a look - especially people back home. Compared to the last one Change, which we did last year, it's probably doing a little bit better."In the full interview, the boys discussed a range of personal and professional topics. They talked about the positive response to their new album's ballad and the unveiling of their new bass player, Sage. They also discussed the strategic decision to release the audio before the video to boost streaming numbers and create anticipation for the music video.Additionally, they highlighted the need to strategically unveil Sage to maintain the surprise for the show. They also delved into the meaning behind their new song Don't Give Up on Us, highlighting its dual significance related to relationships and the band's perseverance.Furthermore, they provided insights into their plans for the album launch show at Max Watts on January 25 next year, indicating that it will feature a mix of new and existing songs, with a focus on gauging audience reception for future performances. They also discussed the evolution of their performances, emphasizing their dedication to delivering high energy shows and their commitment to creating a memorable experience for the audience. The conversation also covered the band's upcoming plans, including the release of their new single, pre-orders for the new album, and their upcoming shows and tours, showcasing the band's excitement for the future.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements. In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band achieved international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, and the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's only US number-one single), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Suicide Blonde" and "New Sensation". After Hutchence's death on 22 November 1997, INXS made appearances with several guest singers, and toured and recorded with Jon Stevens as lead singer, beginning in 2000. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series that culminated in the selection of Canadian J.D. Fortune as their new lead singer. The guests keep coming, with Bee and me proud to welcome legendary recording engineer Mike Plotnikoff to the INXS Access all Areas Podcast. Having paired up in his formative years with famed producer Bruce Fairbairn, he was half of the Canadian duo responsible for some of the biggest-selling records of the 1990s by acts including AC/DC, Aerosmith, and the Cranberries.   Come 1997, both Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence reached out to Bruce and Mike, having put together a wealth of strong material and demos via an extended songwriting session in London where Michael had the best and most honest lyrics of his career.   In the first of our two-part series, Mike opens up on the recording process of Elegantly Wasted with huge respect for the professionalism, talent levels, and preparation of Andrew and Michael. Feeling Michael's rock-star aura and swagger, Mike shares great insights into how great INXS were to work with whilst providing never before seen photos of Michael and the band, both in the studio as well as Spain where recording duties extended.   This and a whole lot more! So, sit back and remember an important time and place where Michael's last musical contribution started and lives on today.   Love and Peace ✌️ Haydn   https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com Check out our fan engagement page to buy a Hot Ticket!

From the outset, big thanks to all of the well-wishers who made episode 100 such a beautiful experience for Bee, the team, and me. Today, we are fortunate to delve deeper with the inimitable Darren Jones, whose access, anecdotes, and involvement with INXS have few peers.    We get to hear about Garry Gary Beers' fantastic Mangrove Studios which was state-of-the-art for its time and gave back to the Australian musicians such as Silverchair, Courtney Barnett, and Sarah Blasko. Darren also shares a rare moment in Adelaide when Andrew Farriss allegedly “lost the plot” with rare anger on display.    With a jam-packed news section and some exciting chart updates, we are excited to commence the next 100 episodes with a bang! Episode 88: Happy 62nd Birthday Michael Hutchence   C'mon INXS fans! Let's take heed from Andrew Farriss, who recently on our podcast urged all fans to celebrate Michael's birthday rather than commiserate his passing. So, with January 22nd upon us, that's what we are going to do. Michael Kelland Hutchence, born in 1960 Sydney to Patricia Glassop and Kell Hutchence, grew up to be one of the most charismatic frontmen of his era and all time. With moments of grace, moments of brilliance, and a penchant for the unpredictable, Bee and I individually rate our “top 6 or more Michael moments” of all time and revel in a time where not hip hop but “rock stars drove the big cars”! Also, we have a chunky news section that both informs and educates all, whilst there is a long-awaited return of the rantiest of rants that has a certain 1980's hair metal tosser firmly in view. All that and a whole lot more, so do yourself a favour and join the Michael party that is Access all Areas: INXS!   Peace and love! ✌️   Haydn   To become a Patron/ subscriber check out our different levels and see which one suits you. https://patron.podbean.com/INXSAccessAllAreas Check out the ultimate INXS Fan Kit here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125104584918   Check out our website for all the good stuff... https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com ...and for some more cool stuff visit https://www.inxs.com  Please sign the petition at  http://inductinxs.com to help get INXS nominated into the ROCK & ROLL HALL of FAME, where they belong.  A new episode drops every Sunday INXS Access All Areas is available on Podbean, iTunes, Spotify, TuneIn, and Amazon Music.

Episode 81: Michael Hutchence, My Friend   In the week we remember and reminisce about the life of Michael Kelland Hutchence, it only seems appropriate that we hear from the man who arguably was closest to him from an artistic point of view, Andrew Farriss.   We thank Andrew for his preparedness to be vulnerable and share intimate and revealing memories of the times he and Michael penned some of the most stunning melodies and hooks together. We cover lyrics, Michael's cosmopolitan and cultural awareness borne out of a youth traversing many countries, and the legendary vocal duet with Jimmy Barnes on ‘Good Times' for Australian Made.   With praise for Mark Opitz's production, Andrew was in awe of the gravelly vocal of Barnesy offset by the honey dripped delivery from Michael as they essentially compete in a “song-off”! The pride Andrew has in recounting Michael's mastery is heart-warming and indicates the massive respect he has 24 years after he left us.   Interestingly, Andrew veers into a fascinating discussion about INXS' travails in Argentina not long after the end of the Falklands War and takes immense pride in INXS being the first international band to tour there thus paving the way for others to follow. He delves deep on Beck, the technology debate modern music faces against traditional instrumentation, and the importance of INXS of mattering musically to Michael and the band.   As we wrap up, we do get to the last few songs from Welcome to Wherever You Are to complete our album discussion. With Mark Opitz chipping in with valuable asides we no doubt felt a lot of love in the room for the legacy of what INXS created over 35 years and thank both Andrew and Mark for allowing us to delve deep.   Love and Peace Haydn & Bee     To become a Patron/ subscriber check out our different levels and see which one suits you.  https://patron.podbean.com/INXSAccessAllAreas   Check out our website for all the good stuff... https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/episodes Please sign the petition at  http://inductinxs.com to help get INXS nominated into the ROCK & ROLL HALL of FAME, where they belong.  The new episode drops on Sunday, 31 October. INXS Access All Areas is available on Podbean, iTunes, Spotify, TuneIn, and Amazon Music.

It feels like Andrew Farriss is the perfect guest to launch The Rider. Last count, INXS has sold 75 million (plus) records, and most of those were either written by him or co-written with Michael Hutchence. On the anniversary of Michael's death and recently, the 30th anniversary of "Live Baby LIVE" Andrew opens up on how he and Michael complimented each other so well as song writers for INXS. Andrew also tells Becko how many like to package you as either a rock artist or a country artist and put you in a little box - why can't you do something new that challenges you? He also shared how he felt INXS were really destined for something great on that fateful tour of Australia in 1997.  It's that time of year again where November 22nd hits our calendars. Originally synonymous with the date that JFK was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. It's now synonymous with the INXS and wider music industry as the day we lost Michael Hutchence. As mentioned by Andrew Farriss in our recent deep dive interview, let's try and use this day, not just in solemnity but also as an acknowledgment of the massive contribution Michael made as a singer, a songwriter, a band member, a brother, and as a son. So into today's episode, we bring together for the first time Michael's peers such as Bono/U2, Michael Stipe from REM, and Simon LeBon from Duran Duran to share their admiration for Michael. But more importantly, our INXS patrons and the podcast listening community to share just what Michael meant to them. Sometimes melancholy, sometimes heartbreaking but on many occasions, truly uplifting and inspiring are the anecdotes and memories shared by our INXS alumni. For this week’s podcast, we have two fascinating and very different artists from the world of country music. First up, from Alberta, Mike chats with D’orjay The Singing Shaman, who was recently nominated for Country Artist of the Year at the 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards following the release of her debut album, ‘New Kind of Outlaw.’ As a Black Queer woman (and literally a shaman!), D'orjay is passionate, vocal, and committed to bringing diversity and inclusiveness to country music. As she boldly states on the title track of her album, “I love country music, but will country music love me?” Then, joining Mike from the other side of the world is Andrew Farriss, the chief songwriter behind Australian icons INXS. He released his debut solo album in March, which is Farriss’ first country-influenced endeavor. In country music, he says he found the kind of storytelling that truly connects with his life. Farriss is one of Australia’s most prolific songwriters and in 2020, he was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia. INXS were also the recipient of multiple ARIA awards and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Around the world, the band was nominated for a JUNO and multiple Grammys. With a career spanning 30 years, they have sold over 50 million albums worldwide, including a Diamond selling status in Canada. Outside of INXS, Farriss is an Australian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame inductee. It's no wonder how he has amassed around 250 songs over the years.

The musical maestro behind some of music's catchiest melodies, feel-good funk, and heartfelt lyrics, Andrew Farriss is without peer. The middle brother of a triumvirate musical family, Andrew was happiest on stage hiding “top left-back” allowing his bandmates to strut their stuff. Essentially the songwriting burden from Listen Like Thieves onwards, Andrew despite the onset pressures and expectations, never failed to deliver thoughtful, catchy, versatile, and classic hooks that connected with our feet, hearts, and heads in the most timeless way. So block out the external distractions and embrace part one of our Andrew Farriss Special!
