Welcome to Generous Impact. In this episode, Bret and Amanda Brummitt are joined by Ira Kaufman, a rabbi, social worker, and healthcare executive. Instead of focusing on a single organization, this episode delves into how Ira spends his life serving his community in various impactful ways. Ira shares his journey from New Jersey to Cincinnati, exploring his background in rabbinical school, social work, and healthcare. Amanda discusses his work with Halcyon IV and how their approach to caring for people with dignity and hope left a lasting impression. The conversation reveals how Ira's dedication to meeting the needs of his community has shaped his life and that of his family, who are all deeply involved in community service. The episode highlights several of Ira's initiatives, including the Bikur Cholim of Cincinnati, which provides kosher meals and support to hospital patients, and the soon-to-be-launched volunteer emergency medical service service, Hatzalah of Cincinnati. Additionally, Ira talks about his involvement with the local Burial Society and ritual baths. Other organizations where Ira humbly spends his time include Congregation Zichron Eliezer, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and Mesivta of Cincinnati. They also discuss that having a healthy business while also doing good is possible. Really caring for the team is vital and Ira mentioned the book Patients Come Second by Britt Berrett and Paul Spiegelman that really inspired him. And, small world moment. Amanda had the joy of working for Britt earlier in her career! Ira also offers valuable insights on balancing a demanding career with a commitment to community service, emphasizing the importance of seeing the beauty in others and fostering a supportive work environment. This episode is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have through dedication, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others. It's a family affair in the Kaufman household with the whole family giving back to the community from meal prep to transportation to just being there for people. We hope you'll be inspired to be there and care for your own community and see the beauty in other people.
On this episode, Rabbi Garfield and Rabbi Schonfeld discuss one of the most impactful decisions a parent can have in their son's lives... where to send them for mesivta. They discuss the best way to best your child up for success in mesivta and beyond, and how to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible. Also: What to really do when your child's school has different shittos than you? And the big question: What is the parent's role and the yeshiva's role when choosing a mesifta for a child?

Thanks Nachum! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Saracheck Tournament caps off our Winter Sports coverage. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Twenty-four teams converged on Yeshiva University this past weekend to vie for one of the three tier championships at the 2023 Red Saracheck Memorial Basketball Tournament. Eight Yeshiva League teams were among the participants including last week's League championship combatants North Shore and Frisch. Unfortunately for both teams, neither would reach the final, however, the league was well-represented on Championship Monday. In the Tier III Championship, JEC upended Kohelet 52-42. The Thunder shook off a Day 1 loss to Fuchs Mizrachi to take victories over Maimo and Mesivta of Greater Philadelphia to reach the final. Yosef Heller took home the MVP for the Tier. Tier II saw DRS fall to that same Fuchs Mizrachi team. DRS found itself in Tier two following a qualifier loss to Magen David to begin the tournament. DRS defeated RASG and Berman, but could not overcome the Mayhem, who also took out TABC on their road to the final. The 53-39 victory by the 14th seed over the Wildcats was set in motion early with a 22-4 first quarter stretch that allowed Fuchs to coast the rest of the way. The Main event of the tournament, however, was the Tier 1 final, which saw 2nd seed Valley Torah take on 5th seed SAR. The Sting earned their way to Championship Monday by knocking off the tournament top seed Shalhevet in a stunner on semifinal Sunday 57-55 behind 23 points from Akiva Shanzer. Valley Torah punched their ticket by defeating Cali rival YULA by 10. The Sting rolled out to a 16-6 lead, but the Wolfpack were resilient, chipping away and closing the gap to 1 at the half 31-30. The second half was all Valley as the Wolfpack rode 17 points from Johnny Dan to their second straight Tier 1 championship. With Saracheck drawing to a close, so too does the 2022-2023 winter sports season. Tune in after the Pesach holiday for soccer, boys volleyball, girls hockey, softball and baseball as the JM in the AM Sports Update turns the focus to the Spring. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!

Step one developing an appreciation for torah (At Mesivta Sha'arei Prozdor) in Torah by Rabbi Daniel Kalish
During my second year at Lubavitch Mesivta of Chicago, Rabbi Daniel Moscowitz OBM spoke to us about how to act on Mivtzaim and Public speaking. Remember he was speaking to 16 year old Bachurim. This talk is absolutely classic and I loved re-listening to it almost 25 years later. In honour of the Kinus Hashluchim this weekend, I thought it would be a great time to release it.

In tonight's Tehilim shiur (4/6/21 at YBT) we decided to take up a side-topic: the meaning of the word הללויה. I figured that we'll encounter it eventually (and already did, back when we did 146), and rather than go off on a tangent then, we'll just discuss it now. Plus, it comes up so much in davening. Although we read through the whole sugya in the Gemara, along with the Mesivta's summary of some meforshim, we ended up focusing on three possible meanings of the word. We kind of had to rush at the end, but at least we opened up some avenues of thought!----------מקורות:פסחים דף קיז עמוד ארשב"ם שםמהרש"א שםבטיב גיטין - מרגליות עמוד נד עמוד א ----------If you missed the crash-course on "How to Learn Tehilim," here are links to the YouTube video, the podcast episode, and the written version. Here's another article I wrote entitled How TO and How NOT to Apply Tehilim to Your Life.Lastly, here's an article I wrote entitled How to Say Tehilim for the Sick Without Violating Halacha. ----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! The Mountains, the Catskills, the Borscht Belt, upstate, the country. Monticello, Liberty, Woodridge, Swan Lake, Woodbourne, Fallsburg. A place of many names with one thing in common: a place rich in Jewish history and lore. As a summer destination, the Catskills would be home to countless bungalow colonies as city Jews organized their communities for a mountain air getaway. Generations of children attended the many summer camps that dotted Sullivan County. Camps included Mesivta, Agudah, Munk, HILI, Kol Rinah, Torah Vodaath, Ohr Shraga, Sternberg and many more including the Betar Jewish self defense camp where Vladimir Jabotinsky died in 1940. It was also famously known as the Borscht Belt, and the legendary hotels/resorts/country clubs like Grossinger's, Kutscher's and the Concord made their mark as vacation sites. Most Jewish comedians of the time commenced their careers there. In addition to the summer crowd, the Catskills were home to many year round Jewish communities over the years. These towns built shuls, mikvas, hired Rabbis and even Jewish owned farms burgeoned for a time. This included Yeshivas as well such as the Mountaindale Yeshiva of Rav Yehuda Davis and the famous Yeshiva of South Fallsburg. Rabbi Kivelevitz and Rabbi Worch reach into their own personal histories, and parenting choices in discussing the true meaning of the adjuration of Chazal in Pirkei Avosרַבִּי נְהוֹרָאִי אוֹמֵר: הֱוֵי גוֹלֶה לִמְקוֹם תּוֹרָה, וְאַל תֹּאמַר שֶׁהִיא תָבוֹא אַחֲרֶֽיךָ, שֶׁחֲבֵרֶֽיךָ יְקַיְּמֽוּהָ בְיָדֶֽךָ, וְאֶל בִּינָתְךָ אַלתִּשָּׁעֵן.Was Rebbe Nehurai counselling a student to leave his place specifically when his Makom was not a place of Torah? This was the explanation of the Mishnah given by most of the Medieval Commentators-Rashi -Rambam-Rabbeinu Yonahsee heredown to the Bartenura and Rav Chanoch Zundel(The Eitz Yosef).A more novel interpretation was put forward by Rav Yisroel Lipschutzherestating that even if there are teachers and a viable institution where a person was born and raised, the only way for him to blossom into greatness,is to leave friends and family behind ,and find through struggle and sacrifice his mature attitudes and strengths as a thinker and Talmid Chocham.Rabbi Kivelevitz notes that Lipschutz's words have guided generations of young people and their parents to send their children away, but at what he feels has been a great price that the present generation cannot afford to pay.Rabbi Worch challenges his co-host, stating that the major accomplishments of Kivelevitz's life are due to his having left home at thirteen to face the crucible of the ultra competitive, demanding military school air that was fostered in Ner Israel of Baltimore.Worch wonders if Kivelevitz would have ever been driven to amass knowledge and work on becoming a Dayan, had he been still pampered at home.Rabbi Kivelevitz believes he would have absorbed more human skills and compassion, and not slid into the hard cynical shell, that adolescents had to build for themselves to survive the onslaught on identity that being away fosters. He regrets the years spent away from his parent's wisdom, and points to Torah Giants of the 20th and 21st centuries(Rav Soloveichick and the recently deceased Rav Yaakov Perlow)who thrived under home influences.Rabbi Worch feels that those exceptions prove the rule, and while some students for emotional and social reasons need the comforts of the local small-town Yeshiva, the system now in place; the exclusive prep school Mesivta where the best and the brightest from across the land aspire to attend, is the best guarantor for Gedolim in the future. While not denying the greatness that has emerged from Philadelphia or Telshe Alumni,Rabbi Kivelevitz worries about the social and community skills that only receive proper tending when students are able to frequently return home.Rabbi Worch explains why he decided to send his oldest son away,to literally walk in his father's footsteps, and why he feels no regrets. Please leave us a review or email us at ravkiv@gmail.comFor more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
