All that DNA has been a boon to law-enforcement agencies, who've discovered that “investigative genetic genealogy” is far more effective if searches aren't restricted to DNA left at a crime scene.By just uploading the genetic profile of a suspect to a genealogy website, where thousands of users have freely shared their DNA information to find out more about their ancestry, detectives are able to map out a criminal's entire family tree and zero in on their identity.

Her passion, throughout her career, has been technical rescue and her colleagues describe her as “one of the best there is.” The TRT (Technical Rescue Team) are certified emergency medical response firefighters specially trained in the treatment and removal of victims trapped in complex or confined spaces. Her training, experience and leadership culminated when her station was one of the first to arrive on the scene of the Surfside condominium collapse that occurred, at 1:22 a.m. EDT, on June 24th, 2021, in Surfside, FL. This was the biggest call her department has ever seen. After arriving on scene, she immediately took her 100 foot ladder and began rescuing people from the collapse zone and the swaying balconies that remained. Ultimately, she helped rescue all eleven people and two dogs.Today, while continuing to serve, she reminds her fellow first responders that it's ok to struggle and, most importantly, that it's ok to get help.

Emergency managers know what it takes to recover from natural disasters. That’s why they’re telling states, counties, and cities to act now to prepare for storms, wildfires, and other calamities. David Paulison, the longtime chief of Miami Dade Fire Rescue, rose to national prominence in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when he was tapped by President George W. Bush to help New Orleans and other storm-ravaged communities recover while serving the nation as its FEMA chief. Now he advises planners work to prepare their roads, bridges, water systems, electrical grids, and telecommunications networks before the next big weather event strikes. That was his suggestion in an article he co-authored for RouteFifty.com, and it’s what he told us during a recent telephone conversation.Links:Former Emergency Managers: Act Now Before the Next Storm

As we once again return to the “5-Alarm Task Force” podcast vault during our summer hiatus, we turn to another excellent podcast that deals with the exorbitantly high rate of cancer in the fire service. Firefighters around the world risk their lives almost every day, running in when everyone else is running out. While it is well known that our job is inherently dangerous, over the last 10-12 years, we have learned about a different danger, one that hides as a microscopic "time-bomb," where no one knows, if or when it may go off! Our guest on this Episode is Keith Tyson, a 34-year veteran of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Just a few months after retiring 10 years ago, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer and several skin cancers. These diagnoses started Keith on a journey and mission that continues today. He immediately began looking into the cancer rates of colleagues in his department. Each number, each fact, led to the discovery that his was not a sole incident. Both men and women in MDFR were experiencing rates far above the national average. Dealing with his own treatments, he engaged the Univ. of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Centers, who joined the search for the cases and apparent causes of these rates. From his own case, he learned of another, this time in the Palm Beach County Fire Dept. and started to engage their participation in the studies. With that, Keith founded the Florida Chapter of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. Listen as Keith relates his personal journey which has led him around the country, to both inform and support firefighters about this very dangerous enemy that we face and what we can do to reduce our exposure.
