Each episode is a snapshot, a moment, a sneak inside the minds of our graduates. In season 3 we talk to graduates about going back. But is it back to the beginning or back to the future? In this episode we meet 2015 Law graduate Michael Weinberger and chat reverse culture shock, the Scottish work ethic, and another London. After studying law in Edinburgh and Frankfurt, Michael is now back home helping businesses seeking growth in Canada. He advises in English, Spanish, French, and German. Whether it is returning home after graduation, returning to Edinburgh after adventures elsewhere, or just returning to a place that felt like the past but turned out to be the future, season 3 of Multi Story Edinburgh explores how going back is never life in reverse. All opinions expressed are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of the University of Edinburgh. Be as young as you feel is my topic for today, Mindful Tribe. Part two of Tom Campbell's, ‘What Is Consciousness' will be published on Wednesday night, so in three days from now. I honestly believe that no matter what your actual age is, you can choose to feel young and there are a lot of different ways of doing that. Today I'm excited to share some of the thoughts that I have on this topic. I am sending out some Mindfulness Mode mugs and T shirts to some of my listeners who responded with an email. Check out my Instagram, and my TikTok. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify 5 Ways To Feel Young Here are five ways you can feel young, no matter what your age might be. And the first one is something we talk about a lot on the show. Be as young as you feel by being in charge of your thoughts. Be In Charge Of Your Thoughts Notice your thoughts. Be aware of what your thoughts are, are they, you know, put down thoughts are they thoughts where you're, you're putting yourself down and thinking negatively about you and who you are and what you're doing. Notice your thoughts, and don't let your thoughts be your inner bully. Now, sometimes that happens, like it's normal, I think, I think it's human, to sometimes notice that you're may be saying something negative. But don't let your thoughts be your inner bully on a lasting basis. There are a lot of ways you can make sure that doesn't happen. You can use mantras. If you notice that you're sending some negative thoughts to yourself, just start saying a mantra over and over and over. And I do that a lot. And I find it very much helps me meditate. We've talked a lot about meditation, choose to meditate every morning and every night. I think it's just a beautiful addition to my life. Read uplifting material. Watch inspiring videos. Feed your brain with positivity. There's a lot of negativity you could be feeding your brain with, but do spend time feeding your brain with that which is positive. Choosing great thoughts can help you be as young as you feel. Minimize Sugar Sugar causes inflammation. It definitely does. We we know that scientists have told us this over and over and over and inflammation does not do good things in your body. inflammation causes joint pain. It makes arthritis way worse. It causes all kinds of other challenges. Minimize sugar in your life and you will feel better. It is not easy. It takes a little time. Drink a lot of water, fresh, beautiful water and minimize the sugar in your life. Check out my episode where I interview Barry Friedman. He talked about being an advocate of living the sugar free lifestyle. I met him in San Diego, and was so inspired by him that I went right ahead and cut sugar out of my diet, and it made a huge difference. Barry was a professional juggler for a very long time. It was interesting talking to him way back on episode 91. The episode is called, Barry Friedman Explains How To Be Present and Mindful. So go to www.mindfulnessmode.com/091. Another episode that we talked about feeding your brain was episode 284, Discover the better brain solution with Dr. Stephen Masley. Make a decision to minimize sugar in your diet and it will help you be as young as you feel. Get Moving As humans, for some reason, there's something going on our brains that sometimes tell us not to get moving. I run almost every day and I find that by making the commitment to be active every day, I feel younger and more energetic. A lot of our guests talk about how important it is to move. Make a commitment to yourself and stick to it, to move every day. Whether it's walking, or running, swimming, cycling, maybe it's martial arts, just move. I have a mini trampoline and that is so easy on the joints, to just bounce on that and just allow your body to just feel good as you bounce. Moving every day will help you be as young as you feel. Breathe Another topic you hear about constantly on mindfulness mode is the subject of breathing. It seems as though all my guests realize how very important breathing is. Breathing is something that can help you. We spend far too much of our time shallow breathing, and our bodies and especially our brains need oxygen, and we thrive on having ample oxygen. So do daily breathing exercises and just believe it, that breathing can change your life. Breathing is just a beautiful thing. So there are several episodes where we talk quite a bit about breathing like 511 Pause, breathe and smile to awaken your mindfulness. And that's by Gary Gach. And 49, Make a connection between becoming aware and breathing suggests Andrea Klunder Another person I met at an event in the United States number 109. Breathe in the universe to cope with mental illness. And that was Michael Weinberger in episode 109. So breathing and taking in lots of oxygen will help you to be as young as you feel. Laugh Laughter is one of the most underrated things you can do. Make sure you laugh every day, even if you're just laughing for the sake of laughing. Laughing causes me to just feel so good and I think that we don't laugh enough. I say that often. I think it's great if you can find something really truly funny to laugh at and you can have a really good belly laugh. But apparently scientists have come to realize that we don't actually have to have something super funny to laugh at. As long as you're laughing, it delivers the same benefits to you. And this is what I learned from Dr. Madan Cataria, and he is features in the episode that was called Laughing in the face of COVID-19. I interviewed him in April of 2020. He's the person who started Laughter Yoga. You can go online search up Laughter Yoga, and you can join a virtual class of Laughter Yoga, and just laugh and and feel good, and I highly recommend it. Another person I interviewed was Soren Russow, Booster Shot of Happiness is the name of the episode. He's a guy that loves to laugh and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Soren so you can check out that episode as well. And definitely do check out a laughter yoga group online in order to be as young as you feel. So my top five tips to be as young as you feel, or maybe I should say begin to feel as young as you want are: 1/ be in charge of your thoughts 2/ minimize sugar 3/ get moving 4/ breathe 5/ laugh. Take what we've learned today to reach new heights of calm focus and happiness. Stay in the mode. But with more people becoming aware of the consequences of taking drugs, many are turning towards ways to heal mental illness naturally. My guest today, Kathryn Keefer will share her tips in healing mental illness naturally after overcoming her own health obstacles. Broken Family Kathryn Keefer shares that her childhood was messy. However, she readily tells people her story. Because it shows people that it is possible not to become a victim of your circumstances. Kathryn Keefer is an identical twin. Along with a younger sister, they initially grew up in Virginia. She recalls spending a lot of time outdoors. Life was good until her dad, who was in the Navy, left the family when Kathryn Keefer was seven years old. The family eventually decided to move to a house that was more manageable to maintain because their old place was too big for a single mother. Both her parents eventually remarried. However, both divorced their second spouses after a few years. Coping Mechanism As a child caught in the chaos of a broken family, Kathryn Keefer turned to food for comfort. She and her twin sister Rachel were both were hooked on video games. “Rachel turned to food just a little bit later. She was that classic middle child by trying to keep everyone together. My little sister and I were like cats and dogs,” Kathryn Keefer recalls. “Rachel took on the Mama Bear role. Her rebellious stage was in college.” Kathryn Keefer also remembers having her first panic attack in the 8th grade. She was labeled with mental illness such as depression, anxiety, and OCD. That is why Kathryn Keefer was automatically put on Prozac. Getting Worse Kathryn Keefer was 16 years old when her mom divorced her stepdad. She went to beauty school after high school and eventually got married after graduation. Then she got pregnant right away. Now with a new label as a mother, Kathryn Keefer eventually became depressed. After moving to Hawaii, Kathryn Keefer found out she was pregnant again, and the depression became worse. One day, it got so bad that she told herself that she could not keep being depressed. “I was tired, and I was tired of being tired. Then I discovered the self-help world. Fast forward today, that is where it all started,” said Kathryn Keefer. She adds, “I became obsessed with not getting fat. Because I was obsessed with my weight for so long and it consumed everything I did. So I was not healthy at all. I got relatively thin the unhealthy way.” Waking Up To Realization Eventually, Kathryn Keefer discovered that she was not a victim of the labels that other people were giving. Everything changed for the better the day Kathryn Keefer realized that she doesn’t have to listen to other people, Kathryn Keefer says that not being defined by labels helped her realize what she needed. She is an advocate for natural heal and says that there are safe ways to get off medication. In her case, she practiced self-awareness and changing how she ate. “Develop a love for real food. You don’t have to change your life overnight. It’s about the small goals that are easy to reach,” explains Kathryn Keefer. “So you can celebrate those victories. Slowly pile on another one until you realize one day that you haven’t consumed processed food or soda.” Piyo It is a beach body program that features full body movements and stretching. Kathryn Keefer taught classes for two years in North Carolina. It was not an overnight success for Kathryn Keefer as far as her exercise regimen is concerned. In fact, it was only three years ago that she finally really got into exercising. “Instead of saying, ‘I work out because I’m scared of getting fat,’ I workout because I love myself. You learn to love yourself,” Kathryn Keefer advises. “Find that sweet spot where your heart is just pumping, and you feel incredible. That is your brain releasing dopamine. It brings your heart rate up.” Kathryn Keefer is also a fitness instructor. It’s quite amusing since she says she didn’t start exercising until she was 25 years old. According to Kathryn Keefer, people have a hard time finding the motivation to workout. But she discovered that is not about finding the motivation to start. It is about learning how amazing it is to finish and becoming not addicted to that feeling. Effects of The Right Diet Kathryn Keefer believes that most Americans’ sedentary lifestyle was due to having a poor diet. According to her, it plays a significant role in why 1 in 3 Americans is on anti-depressants. “The best form of eating that they discovered for people with mental illness problems is the Paleo diet. I’m not Paleo because my body does not digest meat very well. It’s just an example that we are all different and it is about finding what works best for you,” said Kathryn Keefer. Kathryn Keefer also says that the brain is made of fat. That is why good fats are so vital. She eats an avocado a day and cooks only with unrefined coconut oil and ghee. “Olive oil alone is good, but if you cook olive oil, it oxidizes. So it is not good for cells at all. I also recommend taking Vitamin D supplements, avoid gluten and dairy products,” advised Kathryn Keefer. Kathryn Keefer says this is because gluten is just a protein that makes food stretchy. There are still other amazing choices for food and carbs. Gluten and dairy products, on the other hand, contain elements that are detrimental to the brain because they are inflammatory foods. Recommended Recipes I have a fantastic pasta recipe that my family loves, and I know you will, too! Red lentil noodles are made with red lentil flour and can be bought at Trader Joes or any whole foods store. It saves time because you can cook it in batches. Packed with protein, I mix a little salt, ghee, organic tomato sauce with the noodles. It’s like mac and cheese with ketchup. It’s effortless to make and healthy, too! You won’t feel like you’re on a diet because it tastes so good. According to Kathryn Keefer, depriving ourselves is the reason why so many diets fail. Consequently, there are fun ways to make healthy food taste good. Kathryn Keefer does a chickpea recipe made with almond butter. Mixed with garbanzo beans and vanilla, it is a blender recipe that is likewise easy to make. Another one of my favorite recipes is flourless bread. The seed bread is so fibrous because quinoa binds it together. Just soak the quinoa till it’s thick like dough and then mix all the seeds in it and bake it. Once it is baked, cut like long crackers and eat it like a toast. It’s actually like a mix of bread and crackers. Sometimes I put dried fruit in it and melted ghee. Just make sure you drink a lot of water whenever you eat this. Kathryn Keefer, on the other hand, uses beans a lot and her preferred flour is almond. She has also cut back on coffee. Also, try her delicious smoothie! To make Kathryn Keefer’s smoothie, blend carrots, fresh ginger and frozen fruits like mangoes, pineapple or peach. Then mix it with frozen banana, turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, lemon juice and a few drops of stevia. Kathryn Keefer also recommends drinking lemon water out of a stainless or glass bottle first thing in the morning. It keeps the vitamin C levels up and aids in digestion. And because cancer cells do not survive in an alkaline environment, drinking lemon water also prevents cancer. Tapping Aside from food and exercise, another thing that helped Kathryn Keefer heal her mental illness is doing meditation, tapping or emotional freedom technique (EFT), and breathing work. Kathryn Keefer learned about tapping from Nick Ortner who is the author of The Tapping Solution For Manifesting Your Greatest Self Tapping is applying acupressure to the body. “There’s a nerve that runs right along your stomach and diaphragm. So when you deep belly breathes with your diaphragm, it massages that nerve and calms your nervous system down,” explains Kathryn Keefer. On episode 103 of my podcast, I incidentally guested award-winning author Dawson Church, who also expounded on tapping or emotional freedom technique. In the episode, he also mentioned that EFT is also often used for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder. Finding Gratitude Another key to getting yourself out of depression is finding ways to be aware. When one is aware of things, the feeling of gratitude envelopes our whole being and leads to happiness. Check out my episodes 54 and 166 where Michael Weinberger expounded on The Happiness Formula. He’s such an inspiration for overcoming his depression and helping people to find happiness by embracing gratitude. Importance Of Self-Care Kathryn Keefer also recommends getting enough sleep. Keeping communication lines open with others can also do wonders to improve mental illness. Most of all, she stresses the importance of self-care. “By taking care of yourself, you are in a place mentally and physically to help other people, especially with family. It’s ok to be selfish because it makes you a better parent. You have needs, and they have to be met,” said Kathryn Keefer. Institute For Integrative Nutrition I’m so happy that Kathryn Keefer signed up for a course at the Institute For Integrative Nutrition (IIN) after being an avid listener of my podcast. I have had many listeners sign up for classes at the Institute For Integrative Nutrition (IIN). In fact, you get a USD$1,500 off your tuition if you sign up and mention the Learn True Health podcast. I first came to find out about IIN after interviewing Donnie De Santi on episode 58. He was the first health coach I had on my show. I immediately called IIN after the show and signed up right away, “When I discovered IIN, thanks to you, Ashley, I am going to be graduating soon. I have four weeks left,” said Kathryn Keefer. “I love all aspects of health because they are saving my life. And I can’t wait to share with other people what I figured out and how they can figure out what works for them.” Kathryn Keefer received her training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where she studied a variety of dietary theories and practical lifestyle coaching methods. With her knowledge, she co-creates completely personalized actions based on your goals to move you toward your ideal vision of health within your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and resources. The Art Of Acceptance http://learntruehealth.com/acceptance/ Acceptance Is The Key To Happiness Acceptance is something most of us struggle with. Especially during confrontations or conflicts, we often assert ourselves to be right. But does being right make us happy? According to my guest today, not always. Michael Weinberger is back with us again, folks! And he’s going to explain why it is possible to be happy even if we’re not always right. Happy Or Right? Michael Weinberger shares that the one question he always asks himself is — ‘Do I want to be happy or do I want to be right?’ Well, until recently, he admits he wanted to be right. However, in reality, he prefers to be happy. Ultimately, Michael Weinberger learned that when he tried to control things and assert that he was right, sometimes the solutions are significantly worse than the actual problems. “It’s nice to be right, but I prefer to be happy. I learned this through engagements with my wife and kids,” said Michael Weinberger. “Just because they are not doing the things in such a way how I would do them, doesn’t mean I’m wrong.” The Art Of Acceptance Apparently, acceptance is a present emotion. When Michael Weinberger learned to focus on the concept of acceptance, it allowed him to be present at the moment. And the more acceptance he had towards people and situations, the happier he became. Michael Weinberger realized that when he sought the need to be right about something, all he accomplished was wasting time trying to control the past and the future. Ultimately, that need to be right prevented him from moving forward. “I was angry if somebody wronged me. I later realized that anger is a past emotion. On the other hand, anxiety, fear, and worry are future emotions. Consequently, it’s funny that the things you are anxious about turn out to be the things you are angry about.” Living A Life Of Acceptance Through his experiences, Michael Weinberger says acceptance is the key to happiness. Apparently, he learned that being right was never worth it. Hence, when he now practices mindfulness and acceptance, Michael Weinberger always asks himself — ‘How much anger do I need to change the past?’ “I’m a pretty intense person. And if you told me the proper amount of anger to undo things from my past, I would focus exerting that amount of anger,” said Michael Weinberger. “And instead of focusing on anger, anxiety, fear and worry, we should focus on extending energy towards acceptance.” Michael Weinberger furthermore explains that we spend a lot of time trying to change the past and the future with unnecessary energy. However, the more time we spend on acceptance, the better off we will be as far as our overall well-being, awareness, and happiness are concerned. The Struggle Was Real I looked up to my parents who were both strong-willed individuals as well as accomplished entrepreneurs. My father dealt with a business situation wherein he was made to chose — risk being unemployed and earn more money or play it safe and lose money. My father initially wanted to take a risk. But because I was still a baby then, my mother’s fear mode kicked in and convinced my father to take the safe route. Apparently, that was the wrong choice. My father lost everything and had to start from scratch. It was a challenging time for the family, but my parents weathered that storm. They were able to pick up the pieces and eventually became self-made millionaires in their respective business endeavors years later. However, my father never really entirely moved on from that downfall years before. He constantly reminded my mother the choice she made him do and held it over her head that the decision he originally wanted to make was the right choice. Over twenty years, my father tortured himself, all because he focused on ‘being right’ rather than learning from the experience. Practicing Gratitude Michael Weinberger has had past struggles on acceptance. However, he was able to channel negative experiences into something positive. As an example, there was an instance wherein he had to fly out to North Carolina for a speaking engagement. Michael Weinberger woke up early on the day of his flight departure. Thinking all was well when he boarded the plane, things took a different turn when all passengers were made to deplane due to a mechanical problem. As expected, everybody was upset and flustered. And who wouldn’t be? But because Michael Weinberger was aware and mindful of his situation, he calmly chose to book a seat on the next flight out. With two hours of waiting time to spare, Michael Weinberger utilized that time to work on his presentation. Upon arrival in North Carolina, the next hurdle was getting to the event which was an hour and a half away. Michael Weinberger consequently had to cancel his first accommodation and instead book a hotel closer to the venue. Add on to that, the Uber fare going to the place wasn’t cheap. Positive Thoughts Michael Weinberger admitted that once he got to the event, he was taken aback by the seeming lack of participants. However, choosing to make the most of the situation, he remained positive and ended up meeting some incredible people at the presentation. “In the end, I was asked to be the keynote speaker for the entire conference next year. I’m glad I learned to slow down and realize that I had choices for each encounter,” shares Michael Weinberger. “Negative thoughts take only a few seconds to ingrain in your mind while positive ones can take up to 15 seconds.” That day would have been regarded as a total disaster. However, because Michael Weinberger practiced gratitude, he immediately realized that his primary focus was to improve himself through the presentation. Opening himself up to what the day had in store, it turned out to be the most incredible experience! “Be aware. Slow down and experience the emotions. Write down why you’re grateful for those emotions,” Michael Weinberger said. “Obsessions are anti-mindful behavior. If we can just refocus obsession onto a positive behavior or habit instead of the obsessive thoughts of misery and negativity, we can influence how we experience our day and ultimately, our life.” A Plan For Living Michael Weinberger is a dynamic and inspiring speaker frequently asked to speak on topics including Mindfulness, Coping with Mental Illness and Addiction. He was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder in 1994 and has learned how to not only cope but to thrive while living with his illness. Michael teaches individuals how to adjust their mindset to be mindful and grateful for everything their life! He is the founder and creator of APlanForLiving.com, a digital mindfulness manager, and wellness platform. Everyone has problems, and Michael’s approach helps people apply gratitude, spirituality, and mindfulness to their daily lives. A grateful heart is a happy heart! Being Lovable http://learntruehealth.com/being-lovable/ Being Lovable Through Gratitude Being lovable is so hard to do sometimes, considering many factors can weigh us down. We tend to seek validation from family, friends, and co-workers and when we don’t, our self-worth plummets. Well, Michael Weinberger is back on the show to guide us on being lovable especially at our lowest point. Struggling Through The Hard Times It’s hard to think clearly when we are dealing with a lot of problems or facing significant challenges. And Michael Weinberger is no different. He relates that when he was working on his A Plan For Living app, he used to struggle to find gratitude. Trying to practice gratitude and prayer, it seemed so natural to come up with resentments and things he hated. However, Michael Weinberger slowly realized that in being lovable, he had to learn to slow down and recognize his thoughts. “Happiness and joy is not a survival emotion. It is a ‘pleasure’ piece,” explains Michael Weinberger. “When I was struggling to find things that I was grateful for, a friend advised that all I had to do was to be lovable today. That hit me. Consequently, the best part of being lovable is that there is no right way to do it.” Being Grateful And Lovable When Michael Weinberger was working on his A Plan for Living app, he realized that there is no right way to do gratitude, no right way to pray nor meditate. Essentially, going through and surviving every obstacle results in molding a person to become more lovable. “By being lovable, I can be more present, I connect more intimately with people around me, and I can solve problems,” Michael Weinberger said. Think of it this way. We all have that one person in the office or that one family member who is hard to work with or is challenging to be around with. Problems seem harder to solve because we tend to think that we are not going to succeed in getting along with that person. Consequently, we set up ourselves to justify our thought and actions, as well as rationalize and defend our position. “But if you are lovable, things can work out a lot easier because the connection to the other person in the equation is there,” said Michael Weinberger. Michael Weinberger cites an example. Let’s say; you’re coming home to your wife. You can go home and be defensive, ready to snap at your wife for not having dinner ready or going home to an untidy house. However, Michael Weinberger says there is a better choice. Rather than spouting off adverse reactions coming home, you could make a conscious effort to be lovable. This way, your relationship with your spouse significantly improves. You will likewise want to do more for yourself, as well as have the drive to take care of yourself. How To Love Yourself Michael Weinberger suffers from bipolar disorder. Because of this, he tends to have suicidal thoughts on a very regular basis. Trying to eat healthily and making the right decision is sometimes difficult. When this happens, Michael Weinberger berates himself whenever he eats poorly. However, we must realize that people tend to insult themselves immediately. Michael Weinberger says that if we can just be compassionate and love ourselves, then it’s not a catastrophe. All we have to do is learn to become our own coach. “Making better suggestions and forgiving yourself is being lovable with yourself. Gratitudes are easier, ” Michael Weinberger said. “There are some things on my prayer list to help slow me down. Those include practicing humility, being present, being forgiving, and having patience. Those thoughts help put me into a better state of mind.” Establishing A Baseline People are different, and not everyone thinks the same. One way to eradicate the blurry lines of communication is learning how to create a baseline. This way, our thoughts can be understood by other people. We tend to project unfulfilled expectations onto other people. Then we end up getting upset when other people fail to understand us. Michael Weinberger says this is because when our thoughts and sentiments are not expressed out loud, we cannot expect the reality to happen. “People believe they’re wandering around in reality. The problem is, we merely wander around in our definition of reality,” explains Michael Weinberger. “We must share our reality with other people. Everyone has their own perspective of the world, and people begin to disagree when they believe that everyone is living in their reality.” Michael Weinberger adds that reality can be challenged. Gratitude, spirituality, and mindfulness allow reality to change. Essentially, he says practicing gratitude gets you down to your authentic self. Hence, your job is to connect that authentic self to everyone around you. Michael Weinberger is a dynamic and inspiring speaker frequently asked to speak on topics including Mindfulness, Coping with Mental Illness and Addiction. He was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder in 1994 and has learned how to not only cope but to thrive while living with his illness. Diffusing Arguments http://learntruehealth.com/diffusing-arguments/ Diffusing Arguments Through Emotional Intelligence Diffusing arguments is something most of us struggle with. It’s not easy keeping our emotions in check especially when we feel hurt. I have had Michael Weinberger on the show several times in the past, and I believe he’s the perfect resource person to teach us the art of diffusing arguments. A Plan For Living I’m ecstatic to have Michael Weinberger once again on the show! He’s the creator of this excellent app called, ‘A Plan For Living.’ It aims to rekindle that spark in your life through gratitude so if you’re feeling down or dealing with emotional issues, do check out this app. Many of us take for granted that our emotions play a significant role in our overall health. Lack of love, happiness, vitality, and connection in our life significantly affects us on a physical and mental level. Diffusing arguments become a constant struggle, and consequently, our life falls apart. That’s why during times like these, we feel like a failure. The Power Of Reaction Michael Weinberger recalls this one instance he had with his employee. This particular person tended to become extremely defensive and frustrated with client behavior. Diffusing arguments between that employee and clients was both a struggle and a challenge. Nevertheless, Michael Weinberger helped his employee deal with his emotions. Eventually, that employee realized that the most significant lesson he learned is that he can’t control what happens to him, but instead he can control how he reacts. “The quality of life is based on how you react, not what happens to you. Whenever I don’t know how to handle a client situation, I focus on what I can control,” said Michael Weinberger. “And that control has been learned through the practice of gratitude and spirituality.” Realizing Your Self-Worth Michael Weinberger says that when we realize how many things we are grateful for, our self-worth increases. He suggests that we must always remind ourselves to be aware of our self-worth, especially before having difficult conversations with others or diffusing arguments. Remind yourself that your self-worth is not going to be impacted by the discussion you are about to have. “I just have to worry about how I can control my reaction in response to situations. Because that will determine whether or not I am going to be happy for that given day,” Michael Weinberger said. In hindsight, Michael Weinberger recalls that he used to take things personally. He felt that his value as a human being was based on what everyone thought of him. It is a typical human reaction because people do tend to get defensive when they feel they are being attacked. However, that response could be avoided if you keep your emotions in check. Finding Happiness “Happiness, well-being or your spiritual connection is a choice. It is not something to be taken away from you,” Michael Weinberger said. Citing an example, Michael Weinberger says he could show up to a meeting and allow someone not to agree with him. The outcome could go both ways. Either Michael Weinberger would end up giving others his happiness by reacting disproportionately, or he could stay in his space, and truly listen, be present and hear the words that are being said. Diffusing Arguments Diffusing arguments is never easy, but Michael Weinberger says it can be achieved. First of all, he suggests removing the noise in an argument. Be present in what the conversation is really about. Ask yourself why are you hurt by the discussion and dig deep into analyzing how the situation makes you feel. During an argument, merely state to the other person how you feel about the situation instead of immediately defending your position. Picking on the other person’s feelings won’t help resolve things either. “You can only control how you react to a situation. So if you react to a situation on fire, you should expect fire back. Own your side,” said Michael Weinberger. “Open an opportunity for the other person to say how he feels.” Essentially, Michael Weinberger says that first of all, you have to become aware of the conversation you are having with yourself. Once you have achieved that, only then can you start correcting the conversation you’re having with others. Discovering The Root Cause In any given situation or problem, Michael Weinberger stresses the importance of knowing the cause of your emotions. Chances are, you realize you have things that were short-circuiting your temper and they were manifesting themselves in arguments about an entirely different topic. Consequently, when you can take time and be grateful for what you have, it takes the edge off from arguments. Furthermore, Michael Weinberger says that with gratitude, you preserve happiness and energy that would have otherwise been wasted in the past. “I have learned over time that nothing happens by accident. I don’t want to spend any more energy or worry in changing the past because it never served me productively,” said Michael Weinberger. A Plan For Living http://www.aplanforliving.com/about Getting Motivated http://learntruehealth.com/getting-motivated Getting motivated is something most of us strive to do. However, with plenty of things to attend to everyday, we tend to either become stressed, procrastinate or just give up. Well, Michael Weinberger is back today to teach us how to start getting motivated for the right reasons. I've had Michael Weinberger on the show a couple of times. We extensively tackled on issues like getting motivated, understanding your emotions, finding gratitude, joy and a sense of purpose. And do I have some exciting news to share! Michael Weinberger returned to update us about his A Plan For Living app. Incidentally, snippets of our conversations here at Learn True Health will be available in his app's segment called 'Morning Motivation.' Thank God It's Friday Anyway, how many of you tend to look forward to Fridays and entirely dread Mondays? We usually rejoice whenever the weekend rolls around. Even Michael Weinberger used to have the same mentality. "I woke up one Monday morning, and I told myself that today is going to be a terrible day. Society and the community dictated that Mondays suck," said Michael Weinberger. "The industry even makes 'Mondays Suck' merchandise, and everyone bought into it." Talking to other people, Michael Weinberger posed the question, 'Why are Fridays and holidays so amazing?'. Apparently, it is because our body chemistry and outlook feels different. There's just something about declaring, 'Thank God it's Friday!' Everyday Is Friday However, Michael Weinberger got a grip on himself and reassessed his definition of getting motivated. Hence, one way how he started getting motivated was telling himself, 'Today is going to be a Friday.'. "Because if I'm living in the present moment, anything can happen. So, why can't today be as refreshing as a Friday?" explains Michael Weinberger. Michael Weinberger cited himself as an example. He weighed about 300 pounds and told a friend he wished he could weigh 290 pounds. However, upon reaching the initial goal, he knew he would still be dissatisfied since he didn't lose more weight. "The reality of it is, we're always projecting out for that next accomplishment. It is almost like we're scared of just being here today," Michael Weinberger said. Finding Motivation Michael Weinberger says that people like Fridays so they can be free to do what they want during the weekend. However, have you ever pushed yourself to try doing it at present or during the week? Because fundamentally, nothing prevents you from getting motivated to do things. "There are jobs and rules. But there's nothing that says you can't accomplish your weekend habits during the week. Learn to make today as special as a Friday," advises Michael Weinberger. Mondays Suck So, why indeed do Mondays suck? Why does getting motivated seem hard? According to Michael Weinberger, it is because the day never lives up to the expectations or thoughts that you put in your mind. "Rather than focusing on 'Woe is me,' and things you don't have, start to focus on things you are grateful for," advises Michael Weinberger. "Instead of focusing or hoping for a specific day in the future, focus on today and make the day what you want it to be." Interested Versus Committed There is a fine line between being interested versus being committed. When we are interested in something, we tend to do it only when it is convenient. On the other hand, when we are committed to something, we accept no excuses and focus solely on results. Michael Weinberger is no different. He struggles when his feelings and thoughts go astray. Then he starts to worry about things that could happen in the future. Consequently, that leads Michael Weinberger to create an unrealistic to-do list and have negative talks with himself. However, Michael Weinberger soon realized that he was interested in living but wasn't committed to living. He goes through the daily ups and downs of life. However, he never really makes any progress. "When I created 'A Plan For Living,' it allowed me to rewire my brain on how I react to situations," shares Michael Weinberger. "I started to focus on things I was grateful for." A Plan For Living When Michael Weinberger started working on gratitude and spirituality, he likewise had to work on mindfulness. Consequently, it gave Michael Weinberger the opportunity to see what things were overwhelming him. Once Michael Weinberger was aware of his emotions and thoughts, he listed down the things that interested him as well as the things he wanted to commit. His A Plan For Living app helps you map out your life by creating lists, journaling your progress and keep track of your accomplishments. "A Plan For Living helped me become aware of myself, my thoughts and feelings. It defines what success looks like as well as how to make me successful," said Michael Weinberger. The two videos Michael Weinberger Promised he would share during our interview: https://youtu.be/oG0SdE_qCHY https://youtu.be/RGU7wFLPSdo Get The App! A Plan For Living - http://aplanforliving.com aplanforliving.com The Happiness Formula http://learntruehealth.com/happiness-formula/ All of us have varied definitions of happiness. Some find it in material things, and others find it in relationships. But do you know that there is a formula to be happy? My guest, Michael Weinberger will show us an amazing way to how to truly be happy through his Happiness Formula. The Dark Years Life wasn't always a bowl of cherries for Weinberger. Having been diagnosed in 1994 with bipolar disorder at the age of 17, Weinberger went through some troublesome years at school, which dragged on until he got married and started his career. However, it didn't stop there. Apparently, Weinberger's biggest struggle was his weight. When he was 32 years old, he reached a shallow point in his life. Nothing seemed to go well, and that led him to the brink of suicide. Weinberger eventually was able to pick up the pieces of his life. He joined programs that helped him manage his weight as well as change his negative thoughts and emotions into positive ones. A Plan For Living Once Weinberger got back on track, that's when he decided to create A Plan For Living. He says he initially created it out of necessity to manage his own life and that others could benefit from it as well. A Plan For Living app focuses on gratitude, spirituality, and mindfulness. It also deals with impulse control, anxiety, fear, worry, and frustration. According to Weinberger, this tool is a saving grace for anyone who has been through the worst challenges in life. Learning How To Commit Before embarking on anything, commitment is necessary. Without commitment, nothing would prosper. Your inner self must be willing to get out of your comfort zone to see results. Citing himself as an example, Weinberger said he needed to commit himself to lose weight. Thirty-nine weeks ago, he decided to commit to one push up or one crunch a day for a week. Much as Weinberger wanted to stick to his commitment, he initially beat himself up and felt sorry for himself. However, Weinberger rewired himself slowly. Not wanting to burn himself out, he gradually got himself on track. "In my heart, I was interested in having a life, but I wasn't committed to having a life. I was living with anxiety, fear and worry," Weinberger said. The Happiness Formula So what is the Happiness Formula? According to Weinberger, it is a combination of gratitude, spirituality, and mindfulness. Once we achieve these, we could then be more aware of what we are feeling. And once we are aware of what we are feeling, we learn to understand that the Happiness Formula is not at all complicated. It is how we react to whatever problems or challenges we face. The Importance Of Mindfulness Mindfulness means that you are in tune to what causes your problems. Consequently, it gives you the power to control your own life. That is why mindfulness is a major component of the Happiness Formula. Weinberger says that we have five primary emotions: anger, fear, grief, joy, and worry. Hence, knowing how to process these emotions empower us to act appropriately rather than react on impulse and regret it later. Creating A Gratitude List I'm sure all of you have heard that being grateful for the simplest things matters in a big way. Weinberger believes that the victim mentality destroys people. Hence, the importance of creating a gratitude list is an essential component of the Happiness Formula. While we can mentally note the list of things we are grateful for, being able to write it down allows us to delve into why we are thankful for the things that we choose to write down. A gratitude list can empower us to face challenges, move forward and become more aware of ourselves. Once we become aware of ourselves, our demands become more realistic. When we become practical, the negative self-talk diminishes. "The focus is on awareness. Make it a conscious decision and work on your communication skills with people," said Weinberger. "I think positively so when negative things happen; I'm ok with it." Looking Ahead We've all heard the cliche that the best way to get over a mistake is to learn the lesson and move forward. It seems broad and easier said than done, but Weinberger's A Plan For Living app aims to guide you through that. The results won't happen overnight, but it's all about taking it one step at a time and celebrating the little victories along the way. It's all about the journey. Because ultimately, happiness is a choice. "My mission is to see people struggle with this because I used to. I believed that the universe was going to take care of me. It had impacted every relationship I had," said Weinberger. Michael Weinberger is a dynamic and inspiring speaker frequently asked to speak on topics including Mindfulness, Coping with Mental Illness and Addiction. 1 Simple Thing Podcast | Build a Better Business by Building a Better You!
We’re counting down the top 10 episodes of 2016 on the 1 Simple Thing podcast. Today is number 6 on the list. Episode 522: The Peace of Spirituality. We hope you enjoy it and Merry Christmas! Michael Weinberger talks about the second of what he calls “the big three” of our emotional health: spirituality. Spirituality is anything that occurs in the universe that you can’t possibly explain or under-stand. Some things happen around us, and we don’t know why or how they happen, but they happen for a reason. And spirituality is to let go of those things and trust God to take over the things over which I have no control.
"It takes such little effort to have such a profound affect on your own life..." Every once in a while you come across someone who completely blows your mind - this interview was one of those times! In this episode, I interview Michael Weinberger, who took his life struggle with bipolar, suicide and addiction and turned it into a business, A Plan for Living, that helps people make the progress they need to turn their life around. "A Plan for Living was developed by Michael Weinberger a software engineer who put his own life back on track using these strategies and decided to create a website application to make A Plan for Living available to everyone. Michael was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17 and for many years lived with instability, out of control emotions and upheaval as a result of his condition. “I either self-medicated or didn’t take my prescribed medication,” he says, “I gained and lost and gained 150 pounds. I was expelled from college, arrested, married, divorced, started a business and lost clients. My life was filled with ups and downs and erratic behavior.” At a low point at age 32 in the wake of a divorce, a failed business, relocation and another big weight gain, he took an intentional overdose of medication, which landed him in the hospital and on suicide watch. Just reading Michael's bio, I knew I was going to be in for an interesting interview, but Michael blew me away with his perspective and some really simple exercises that anyone can do to help reframe their state of mind - and refocus on the great things in their life to begin to make progress." Michael Weinberger talks about the third element of what he calls “the big three” of our emotional health: mindfulness. Mindfulness is connecting my thoughts, my feelings, and my body to bring me into the present moment. So literally it’s as simple as slowing your mind down and being able to be present. Mindfulness is also about creating distance between the time I have a thought and the time I react to it.

Michael Weinberger talks about the second of what he calls “the big three” of our emotional health: spirituality. Spirituality is anything that occurs in the universe that you can’t possibly explain or understand. Some things happen around us, and we don’t know why or how they happen, but they happen for a reason. And spirituality is to let go of those things and trust God to take over the things over which I have no control.

It gave me the opportunity to pause and take stock of where I was and what I needed to do.Thoughts on BreathingBreathing is probably the foundation of my mindfulness practice. Simply the act of taking a deep breath when I think something or I am racing gives me enough pause to stop and really determine what the right action is. I've always learned in order to change directions you have to stop first and you know my brain doesn't know how to stop without physical queues. Taking a deep in-breath and blowing it out is a significant part of that stopping. Similar to my concept of spirituality is I breathe in the universe and I breathe out Michael. Just that simple visualization of Michael being that out of control, out of touch set of emotions in my body, I simply breathe in the peace that is out there and I breathe out myself.[show-notes-breathing]Suggested ResourcesBook: The Unteathered Soul by Michael SingerApp: Breathe / Calm / HeadspaceAdvice for NewbieI have learned that mindfulness doesn't require fancy outfits and renovated rooms in your house and expensive teachers.
