Send us a textThis might be the most fun episode we ever produced. As we look back at George H. W. Bush , Pro wrestling fan. With the help of Charleston Post and Courier articles written by their star reporter Mike Mooneyham, we will examine the Bush connection to the world of Professional wrestling and especially his fondness for wrestling's greatest athlete, "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. We will hear about Bush's friendship with promoter Paul Boesch, his lifelong connection to "Chief" Ed "Wahoo" McDaniel, and his later friendship with "The Big Cat" Ernie Ladd. We will also hit the trail , in 1992, on the whistlestop tour that took George Bush through the Carolinas, with the biggest sports star of them all, Ric Flair. It was at a rally in Spartanburg S.C. where our Host, Randal Wallace, was able to maneuver himself up near the front with a little help from Martha Bishop, the sister of our Senator Strom Thurmond, so he would be nearly front row for the rally at the Train Depot, that would feature not only the President, but Governor Carrol Campbell, Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler, Senator Strom Thurmond, Congressional Candidate Bob Inglis, and our host's childhood sports hero, Ric Flair. To this day, as you will hear, it remains Wallace's favorite memory of any in his over 45 years in politics. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any footage from the Spartanburg rally, but we do have some examples of George Bush out on his 1992 whistle-stop tour, and we do have some later moments from the 2008 Presidential campaign where Ric Flair would return to the trail to campaign for Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. It was at the event for Huckabee in Myrtle Beach that our host again became the focus of attention as he stood with a folder full of wrestling magazines hoping to get them autographed by Ric Flair, at the Huckabee rally, while serving as the Rudy Giuliani Horry County Chairman. It made the news, in two articles in the Sun News political blog Poli-tick-Tock. We will look back at that blog too, and feature the Columbia Mike Huckabee Rally with Chuck Norris and Ric Flair. As you will hear, Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump were actually not the first Pro wrestler and President to headline a Presidential campaign event!!  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Since we want everyone to be able to learn from our Patreon series on the 1992 "Titangate" sex and drug scandals in WWE, want to be able to direct everyone to the shows, and don't want to give anyone the idea that we're trying to make money off of the awful new lawsuit against WWE, we're releasing all four Titangate shows for free. Permanently. We're really proud of the work we did on these, and we hope that everyone can learn from them.---Content warning: By necessity of covering this topic, though it is not the sole focus, this episode contains discussion of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. If you have any concerns that this content may be triggering or otherwise upsetting to you, then skipping this episode may be advisable. It's June [2022], and you know what that means: Time for a new Patreon-exclusive deep dive. This time, it's part 3 of a series on what became known as Titangate, the overarching collection of scandals that hit the WWF in 1992. The topics include:A Current Affair covering the scandals, which included, at the last minute, a letter that Murray Hodgson sent Vince McMahon out of the blue looking for work…while he was suing the WWF. Also: The production of the segment leads to an incredibly strange, forgotten Wrestling Observer item about someone claiming to be a former wrestler going to different shows with conflicting versions of what  he said Rita Chatterton told him about Vince McMahon…before disappearing. How the scandals begat John Arezzi and Vince Russo splitting as business partners, with both giving their sides in material that we didn't have when we did the “Vince Russo Origins” show a few years ago.John Arezzi and Bill Kunkle writing about their memories of Mel Phillips' red flags going back to the mid-1970s.Sid Justice getting suspended for cheating on a drug test.Steve Planamenta word vomiting to Mike Mooneyham about the successes and failures of the drug testing program so far.Lee Cole accusing the WWF of trying to get him sent to prison.Tom Zenk and Jim Ross's thoughts on Titangate, including Zenk revealing for the first and only time that he left the WWF over a vaguely-described incident of sexual misconduct, as well as an overly glib Barry Orton interview where he goes off on Tom and Lee Cole.Vince McMahon benefitting from how many different stories were being shoved into one overarching “WWF scandals” box.The WWF repeatedly airing matches with Mel Phillips doing ring announcing during this period. All that and much more on the latest installment of a series that's become increasingly relevant in 2022 over the last few weeks.Timestamps:0:00:00 Week of April 27, 19920:44:06 Week of May 4, 19921:38:52 Weeks of May 11 & May 18, 19922:08:36 Week of May 25, 19923:14:58 Weeks of June 1 & June 8, 1992To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. It's May [2022], and you know what that means: Time for a new Patreon-exclusive deep dive. This time, it's part 2 of a series on what became known as Titangate, the overarching collection of scandals that hit the WWF in 1992. This time, the topics include:The Now It Can Be Told and Geraldo episodes covering the scandals, especially the new allegations from Rita Chatterton (accusing Vince McMahon) and Mike Clark (accusing Terry Garvin), as well as the CBS Evening News story the same week where Vince McMahon loses his mind. Also: Just how shook was Murray Hodgson by sitting next to Rita during the Geraldo taping? The WWF steroid symposium at the Plaza Hotel and how it led to the dissolution of John Arezzi and Vince Russo's business relationship.Steve Planamenta going wild as WWF spokesman, particularly to kvetch about Phil Mushnick to Mike Mooneyham, with Mushnick striking back the following week.Dave Meltzer's many back and forths with Dr. Mauro DiPasquale about the WWF drug testing program. The Allentown Morning Call attempting to look into the local side of the Mel Phillips allegations.Karate Kid and Lord Littlebrook accusing the WWF of blackballing their “midget wrestler” troupe for accusing Pat Patterson of sexual harassment.Roddy Piper ranting about steroids and Hodgson in a radio interview.David Letterman referencing the scandals in his own way.…and much more. You will probably learn a lot from this show.Timestamps:0:00:00 Week of March 23, 19920:59:07 Week of March 30, 19921:51:15 Week of April 6, 19923:17:37 Week of April 13, 19924:05:54 Week of April 20, 1992To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. Kris & David are back with another Patronr-requested episode of BTS this week, as we discuss the week that was June 15-21, 2005.We start off with Ring of Honor, where the "Summer of Punk" began with CM Punk shockingly winning the ROH World Heavyweight Title from Austin Aries in what was thought to be his last match before reporting to WWE developmental. Instead, it was the beginning of one of the biggest angles in ROH history. We also go over the rest of the show from Morristown, New Jersey, which also featured the returns of Christopher Daniels, A.J. Styles, & Petey Williams for the first time since TNA pulled their talent a year earlier, and lots more.Speaking of TNA, we then head over there to talk about Slammiversary, plus drama regarding Dusty Rhodes & Jeff Jarrett, not to mention the company negotiating potential TV deals with networks like WGN. As usual, this was quite the entertaining TNA section.Next, we go International, talking a busy week in Japan, especially New Japan, as the Best of the Super Juniors tour came to an end, plus Intocable being seriously injured at an AAA show in Mexico, and a major show at Arena Mexico which saw someone lose their hair after a big multi-man cage match. We go back to the U.S. for a packed indie section, with lots of shows in the Philly area and a major scare at an AWS show in Southern California, plus Jim Cornette returns to Ohio Valley Wrestling from his WWE-imposed suspension…but not for long.We then close with the WWE for a wild week of television featuring Edge & Lita's wedding on Monday Night Raw and so much more wackiness, including THE ANGELIC DIABLO and Melina making Heidenreich sad.2000s shows are always packed, and this one is no different, so listen now and enjoy!!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 ROH0:35:15 TNA1:16:57 Eurasia: AJPW, NJPW, Zero-One MAX, Cruiser's Game, DDT, Dragon Door, Dragon Gate, Kanemura Festival, Osaka Pro, JWP, Neo Ladies, M's Style, RoE, All-Star, & FWA1:52:27 Other North America: Stampede, AAA, CMLL, IWRG, Tijuana, & IWAPR2:20:29 Classic Commercial Break2:23:34 Halftime2:39:59 Other USA: 3PW, NEXT, Chikara, NWA Anarchy, IWAEC, IWAMS, AWS, APW, & WWE Developmental3:16:27 WWE4:45:46 Patreon Preview: Phil Mushnick and WWF spokesman Steve Planamenta do battle in Mike Mooneyham's weekly wrestling columnSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/between-the-sheets/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Kris & David are joined by Dave Prazak (@DavePrazak) for a Patron-requested show (you can get your own show by going to our Patreon page and following the protocol) to discuss the almost-week that was June 9th-14th, 1991.We start off with the infamous UWF BEACH BRAWL pay-per-view event promoted by Herb Abrams and what a doozy this was. We talk about everything that went wrong both in the ring and out of it; although it's full of wackiness, the in-ring wrestling wasn't nearly as bad as you would've expected. We then go to the WWF, where we talk about the upcoming George Zahorian trial and how that could affect the company as the year went on, as well as TV ratings, house shows, and a WWF CEREAL in the works. On the international scene, we start in Japan, where we talk about a big WWF star wanting to work for All Japan, New Japan running a big show at Budokan Hall, SWS & the WWF running joint shows, and more before going to Mexico, where we discuss Konnan becoming the first ever CMLL World Heavyweight Champion as well as other news and results.Next up is the U.S. indie scene, which is extremely light since we didn't have a Saturday in our week, but we talk about Eric Embry's failure as a booker when it comes to business, Joe Pedicino's GWF being days away from officially landing a TV deal with ESPN, and The National Sports Daily going out of business.WCW closes the show, with the focus being Clash of the Champions XV: Knocksville, USA, where we go over the entire, infamously overstuffed show. We basically rebook the whole thing to keep it from being a complete mess, plus we have cameos from Jason Hervey as well as Pepa & Spinderella from Salt-N-Pepa, to boot. As part of his ongoing quest to Unmask the Truth™, KFR host Scott Bowden calls his next witness in the Mil Mascaras Monday Night Mystery: Mike Mooneyham, the real-life Matt Brock (sans booze) of pro wrestling columnists. Under oath (or “oak,” as Joe LeDuc would say), Mike testifies exactly what Jerry Jarrett shared on the record with the seasoned reporter regarding what has become the most controversial appearance ever in the Memphis territory—which covers a hell of a lot of ground. In addition, Mike also unveils how he lobbied to start the nation’s premier newspaper column devoted to wrestling in an era when most editors balked at such chicanery receiving mainstream coverage–and in the Sports section no less. The two rasslin’ writers talk their shared humble beginnings writing for the Apters mags, and why Mooneyham eventually stopped working with the likes of The Wrestler and Inside Wrestling in favor of the Norman H. Kiezer publications. Mike also details carefully walking the proverbial top rope a la the The Spoiler (Spoiler alert: Don Jardine) as he interviewed such legends as Ric Flair, Tim Woods and Johnny Valentine in the kayfabe era. Folks, take your seats in the courtroom—because as a wise dude once said: “New sh*t has come to light, man.” Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/between-the-sheets/donations

Since 1989, Mike Mooneyham has written the longest-running pro wrestling column in the United States. He is a member of several halls of fame and has received the Jim Melby Award for excellence in professional journalism. He was a writer, editor and columnist with The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2016. But he continues to write his popular Sunday wrestling column and it’s easy to see why. Mooneyham loves pro wrestling – his passion dropkicks you with every page. He has released a collection of wrestling obituaries from over the past two decades titled “Final Bell: Legends of the Mat Remembered,” which I highly recommend in my review.  In this interview, Mooneyham discusses how he established such close relationships in a highly guarded industry, growing up during the height of the Mid-Atlantic territory, Bill Watts’ reaction to one of his columns and much more.

Between the Sheets
KFR Podcast Vol. 2, Ep. 3: Memphis Mascaras—Unmasked at Last?! (with Mike Mooneyham)

Between the Sheets

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 1970 84:14

The two rasslin’ writers talk their shared humble beginnings writing for the Apters mags, and why Mooneyham eventually stopped working with the likes of *The Wrestler* and *Inside Wrestling* in favor of the Norman H. Kiezer publications. Mike also details carefully walking the proverbial top rope a la the The Spoiler (Spoiler alert: Don Jardine) as he interviewed such legends as Ric Flair, Tim Woods and Johnny Valentine in the kayfabe era. Folks, take your seats in the courtroom—because as a wise dude once said: “New sh*t has come to light, man.” Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/between-the-sheets/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
