What happens when a Sunday night crime caper takes the history of the First World War seriously? In this episode Jessica, Chris and Angus talk about the cult Australian television series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. We discuss class in interwar Australia, what it meant to be a conscientious objector and why it might be a mistake to admit to bribery in front of a policeman in the third of our series on representations of the First World War in television crime dramas. A truly monumental episode. The Essie Davis calls in all the way from Tasmania. You know her from The Babadook, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and her latest The True History of the Kelly Gang. She is a treasure, and she’s on the show today to discuss the 1988 creep fest, The Vanishing. Essie divulges her innermost beliefs on the craft of acting and being able to know the thoughts of a character. She reveals that while working on The True History of the Kelly Gang, she and her co-stars were directed to form a punk band and actually play a show (the band’s name is Fleshlight, if you were wondering). But she also talks about the importance of studying and learning how to be a better actor. This is such a phenomenal and enlightening episode. You can watch The True History of the Kelly Gang on VOD or if you live in LA you can catch it at the Mission Tiki Drive-In.If you haven’t seen The Vanishing…it’s spooky!AND, if you want to check out April’s Staff Pick – watch Bette Gordon’s VarietyWith April Wolfe and Essie Davis

New episode out now! We watched season 1, episode 8 of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and discussed just how awesome the Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher truly is. We cover the beautiful and dynamic costume design, the obvious and delightful tension between Phryne and DI Jack Robinson, how toxic masculinity ruins everything, have a sidebar about feeling connected to fictional characters, and discover that war is bad. Katy is a Miss Fisher Earrings Expert, Carrie channels her inner Frasier, Maddy slides in an Amanda Bynes reference, and Mack made a boob joke that was unfortunately funny. We also discuss how the show covered hot button feminist topics in a surprising way, decide which character would vape, try to name dog detectives, and attempt harmonizing our gasps. Dot deserves everything and Phyrne can have as many men strewn about her boudoir as she wants. Only one of us does an Australian accent (sorry Australia) but TWO become jowly men! Originally recorded September 2019. TW: Suicide, undiagnosed postpartum depression, toxic masculinity

Mind Grapes: It's hot, so thinking deeply is not really a priority right now. Alli has four words for you: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Also a brief foray in to the film The Sapphires in a display of Australian media love. Sam talks about a new podcast that we have both been enjoying with Brent Black and Travis McElroy in Trends Like These - a discussion of issues, events, or various other things that are trending on the internet. Where Do We Put This?: Sam is in the research hot seat this week with a bit of a (wonderful, informative) lecture about net neutrality. What is it? Why has it been in the news so much in the past year? What is Canada doing right (again)? Why should librarians give a hoot? And what still needs to be examined and helped? We scratch the surface here, but we would love to hear your thoughts.

With its history stretching back to 1956, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is an integral part of the Australian television landscape. ACMI and the Emerging Writers' Festival bring together a special panel of writers, critics and commentators to explore over half a decade of what many refer to as "Aunty", with a fascinating exploration of our national broadcaster. Taking a look back at its humble beginnings broadcasting a single non-commercial television channel, all the way through to its current position providing a suite of content across numerous terrestrial, digital and web based channels, our panel will explore past programs and examine the current crop of acclaimed ABC series including Rake, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and Redfern Now.
