1 Samuel 20:1-42 | Andrew Murch | It could be said that life is all about relationships. We are shaped by our primary and formational relationships whether for good or harm. We carry significant memories, insecurities, and motivations from key relationships in our lives. We often make decisions in light of certain relationships and grieve for one reason or another when relationships come to an end. Humans who have tried to live in isolation have found greater anxiety, depression, and aimlessness. Relationships are so important and how sweet it is that the Scriptures are not devoid to depict these relationships. This is perhaps most evident in the events and descriptions of David's life. We have seen his role as a youngest sibling in relation to his brothers. We have seen David as a servant to the king. And we have seen David as a best friend to Saul's son Jonathan. It is this very relationship that will come to a premature end though not as a result of their own hands.
It's been several years since North Carolina lawmakers enacted, and then were forced by public opinion to repeal, HB2 – the infamous bathroom bill. Unfortunately, some lessons have to be learned over and over, and as has been made plain repeatedly at the Legislative Building, conservative state lawmakers remain wedded to a strategy of demonizing […] The post Joe Killian discusses the political slings and arrows directed at LGBTQ Carolinians in 2023 appeared first on NC Newsline.
Arizona Congressman Eli Crane discusses the U.S. surpassing $33Trillion in debt today and the likelihood of a federal government shutdown. Crane says that the shutdown is about so much more than just going against Republican leadership but is about giving government accountability after years of the American people knowing there's not only a two-tiered system of justice but also “two levels of financial accountability.” Crane comments, that even with the current plan of 8% decrease in discretionary spending, the largest cut in decades, it's not “enough.” Saying, he and his other House Freedom Caucus members “understand the financial crisis that this country is in, and the only way that this town will ever change is, is if they're forced to change. And that's why it requires many of us to hold the line and say no, and stand in the gap and take all the slings and arrows and that's what we're doing.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has suffered the same pandemic setbacks as many other big theatres in the country. Seasons have shrunk, as has the staff. Earlier this year, former Artistic Director and Interim Executive Director Nataki Garrett stepped away after a staff shakeup and an emergency $2.5 million funding campaign. Shortly thereafter, the company announced it would need in excess of $7 million in order to finish the current season. OSF is unique in the nation, says American Theatre Editor-in-Chief Rob Weinert-Kendt. There are plenty of other big theatres in urban centers, but Ashland is not in an urban center. It’s the main cultural draw in Southern Oregon, and the scope and depth of its offerings appeal to a national audience. Despite its name, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has been known for decades for its commitment to creating new plays and supporting groundbreaking work. Weinert-Kendt joins us to discuss some of the slings and arrows American theatre and OSF are facing.

"Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them." So muses Hamlet in the To Be or Not To Be speech as he contemplates whether or not to carry on his own existence. A few years ago, events in Robert Boog's life led him to take an interest in the way the characters in Shakespeare's work appear to suffer from a number of what today we would call mental health conditions, including and especially bipolar disorder. Boog is, like John, and Oxfordian, who believes that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, is the best and most likely candidate for the authorship of the Shakespearian canon. And when he reevaluated the biography of de Vere through the lens of someone dealing with bipolar disorder, he came to realize that much of his notoriously erratic behavior as well as his inspired genius could well be connected to an undiagnosed mental health condition (undiagnosed because we didn't have the language for such things several hundred years ago). John invited Robert to talk to him about his book on the subject, Shakey's Madness, and why he thinks we can help destigmatize bipolar disorder while also furthering our understanding of Shakespeare and his plays if we apply a more modern, scientific perspective to his character's various struggles. You can find all his work at RobertBoog.com

We’re joined by Peter Vulfranc (TroubleShooters, These Days Are Ours) to talk about the Slings and Arrows, the Canadian television show about the inner workings of the New Burbage festival - a fictional Shakespeare festival staffed and captained by all sorts of artistic egos and one, very real, ghost. We watched Season 2, Episode 4: “Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair.” We talk about ensemble casts, the complicated relationships between art and business, stories in which nobody is in charge and corny, offensive marketing. Due to some unforeseen technical issues and, well, 2020, we were not able to give Syndicated w/ Lesley and Ben the attention it deserved right after launch - which is why we only released three episodes in 2020. We’re working on stocking up on plenty of new episodes of the show. You’ll be hearing a lot more from us in the future. Syndicated with Lesley and Ben is a twice monthly podcast about television, genre and storytelling in which your hosts watch one episode of a new show and explore the history of television one episode at a time. From family room sitcoms to space exploration shows, reality TV to procedurals and game shows, we’re going to cover it all and give you the context you need to understand the wonderful world of television and the stories we love. Our Logo is by Terra Bosart, the theme song is by Mandra Sigma and the show is edited by Johnny Rinaldo.

In 2009, as part of an afternoon celebrating Waitakere City and West Auckland, Going West guests heard the story of iconic New Zealand television series Outrageous Fortune and the fictional West family of West Auckland. The multi-award winning creative team of Rachel Lang and James Griffin, along with actor Robyn Malcolm (Cheryl West), were joined in conversation by Auckland Theatre Company founder, actor and director Simon Prast. This session also celebrated the publication of Outrageous Fortune: the West Family Album, a book byhttps://www.fishpond.co.nz/c/Books/a/Lang%2C+Rachel ( Rachel Lang), James https://www.fishpond.co.nz/c/Books/a/Griffin%2C+James (Griffin) and Tim Balme, published by West Auckland publisher Peter Dowling of Oratia Media. Outrageous Fortune was created for Henderson-based South Pacific Pictures and ran on TV3 from 2005 to 2010. It is the longest running drama series made in New Zealand, and one of the few embraced by an Australian audience. It spawned a US and an English version, and even aired in Eastern Europe. Starting in 2015, TV3 screened a spinoff series, Westside. Set in the 1970s and 80s, the series followed the younger years of key characters Ted and Rita West. The final episode played on November 16 2020, bringing to a close the West family television saga. Both Outrageous Fortune and Westside shamelessly championed New Zealand music, starting with its use of Westie favourite Gutter Black (by Hello Sailor) as its theme music. Both series also featured buildings and locations across West Auckland, including the brick and tile West family residence in Te Atatu South.

THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Japan has some set pieces around leadership. The Middle Manager boss sits at the head of an array of desks arranged in rows, so that everyone in the team can be seen. This is important because this is how the boss knows who is working well in the team and who isn't. They can be observed every day, all day long. What time they arrive and what time they leave, who is late back from lunch – it is all there in front of the boss. Meetings are easily arranged and follow up is a shout away – “Suzuki, what is happening with that report?”. Now the team are at home, away from the constant surveillance of the boss. The boss has little idea how they spend their days and our clients tell us many Middle Managers are struggling to supervise the diaspora. In many cases, the day would start with the chorei, the morning huddle, getting the team together to go through what is on for that day. These meetups can continue even when everyone is at home. We have just moved it online. Everyone needs to be on camera at 9.00am, dressed for business, rather than in a T-shirt. If you don't come on camera that is a red flag. There may be some depression issues bubbling away in the background, as the isolation starts to get to people. They begin to withdraw. One of my team didn't come on camera for three days in a row, saying there was an issue with the laptop webcam. Was there an issue? How would I know that was the case, sitting in my study, at my home? I immediately started organising another laptop to be sent out. I need to see everyone's face every day, to check how they are doing. In the end, it was a technical issue around the privacy settings in Teams. The point though is, I didn't really know what was going on. I have to be continuously keeping an eye out for the emergence of any stress or depression in my team. At the chorei we go through good news reports, the vision, mission, values, the Dale Carnegie Principle for that day, who we are visiting virtually or otherwise and who is visiting us, each person's top three priorities for the day and a motivational quote. The whole thing takes about ten minutes. I usually spend another ten minutes talking about things like taking care of your health, standing up regularly because we tend to sit for too long, issues around coordination which have arisen, the latest news in our business, the cash flow situation and recognising good work. We also have Coffee Time With Dale at 3.00pm every day for anyone who wants to just shoOt the breeze and catch up with colleagues, they don't physically meet anymore. The meeting cadence with direct reports continues online but it is easy for this to fade or drift. People's new work from home schedules seem to make it harder to connect. Back in February, when we started working from home it had a temporary feel about it. On reflection, I didn't immediately embed some processes I should have. It is now many months since our migration to working from home and we will many more months like this. These direct report meetings are a discipline I found I have to really enforce, because many of my staff seem to possess ninja level skills at avoiding talking with boss. I want stuff from them, I want it yesterday and I am very demanding. Talking with me is probably a pain, so some are quite creative in escaping the supervision. The biggest issue has been coordination across the whole business, as we all descend into our little pockets of responsibility and start losing sight of the big picture. I have to spend a lot more time now making sure that key information is being shared and that I am also sharing key information, rather than hogging it to myself. This is a time consuming activity, but we have dropped the ball a couple of times because it wasn't done properly. Before you know it, timelines start to drift, activities drop out of completion sequence and confusion is not far behind. This is when you discover just how detail challenged some people in the team actually are. In the office it got covered off somehow. Being subterranean, it wasn't noticeable. In isolation from each other however, wrong data inputs have a horrendous impact. They spark a lot of effort to clean up the mess created. It draws people away from what they should be doing, dragging them into the morass of re-work. We tried to get around these coordination and communication issues by creating one truth. There is a live document in Teams that everyone can access and all changes are noted there. As a training company, we have training events scheduled LIVE On Line or in the Super Safe Classroom, so we can see which ones are being executed, which are postponed, who is involved, etc. A limited number of people are allowed to feed into this document to enforce accountability and control. You may need a similar live document that tells everyone what is going on, which is being updated continuously as things change. GIGO (garbage in garbage out) is an issue for any document, so the details have to be monitored carefully. To overcome the isolation, one on one meetings are being held more frequently than when we were in the office. However, I find it is even harder than normal to get hold of people because they are often holding online meetings or are on the phone. In the office, I could just walk over to their desk and signal to them to see me after they finished their call or grab them when they came back from their meeting. I just have to invest the time now to make the communication channels work properly. I find our younger people are not phone savvy. They don't check their phones for incoming calls they have missed. This wastes a lot of time trying to get hold of people, so I have to be pretty bolshie with them, about checking their phones for missed messages and to check their voice mail regularly. It is a real pain, but sending emails or text messages as well seems to be the way to get their attention. People are now working from home and are liberated from the daily grind of commuting in Tokyo which is good. They are not necessarily pouring this extra time into their work though. As the boss, I have had to become a much more “supervising” leader than before, which I actually hate. There are many more moving pieces now due to Covid-19, so whether I like it or not, I have become more interventionist to make sure it all hangs together. How about you? Has this been your experience too?

Most people agree with us about the issues affecting our culture, and influencing our students, but they won’t defend God’s position publicly. Instead, they read the vile posts against the Christian positions, on my website, and stay silent. Why won’t the Christians speak out? The packet of salt is a blessing. If you don’t open […]

The play deepens as a possible murder tries to get her money back while new jobs are tried. In real life, relationships are strained to the breaking point.
Chamberlain loves you, the listeners, so much that he took two bullets for you this week. He finished Darksiders III, which you should not play, as well as Call of Cthulhu, which you also should not play. Chance deftly deflected those bullets, crushing Chamberlain’s poise, and spent his time getting to know Sekiro on a deeply personal level. And Alex spent all of his time being good at Risk of Rain 2, a surprisingly complete and functional early access title.

(That is a very good program!) It seems that there are a lot of misunderstandings about the cracking down on short sales in China. In fact, there is no limit on short short sales in China as long as you can borrow shares. Very similar to the US shorting stocks. But the main problem in China is the leverages with loans from outside financial companies. A subsidiary of BABA is enabler of such outsider loans. That subsidiary company in Hangzhou (where I am from) has software called HOMS, which expand the single brokerage account into a multiple user account with or without brokerage firms knowledge. The original intended users are fund management firms. But the loan companies use the software to provide loans and control the account for margin risk management. They provide margin loans up to 1:10 ratio. When the market initially dropped 15~20%, many accounts will have margin problem. Later on, the loan companies started manipulation operation: They purposely push down the index futures at certain hours, trigger the market sales, and then they forcefully close customer accounts. Finally the Chinese police department stepped in. That really scared those loan operators. Overall, I think it is great idea to forceful interrupt the vicious feedback loop, and return the market to more normal operations. In China, the communist part[y] has to take responsibilities for the wellbeing of the general population, instead of "following the rules" to allow or protect a few successful guys who figured out how to take advantage of the system shortcomings. So I think it is a good. In the US, no one was charged and put into jail for 2008 crisis. Here, we think that following rules is more important than the results. But the rules have been set up the guys who purposely keep holes they can exploit. In this case, I totally support the Chinese government. It demonstrates that Chinese government can correct the problem much more effectively and efficiently. For a society, it is better to protect 1,000,000 people from losing $1,000 each than to allow a guy to make $1B through "successful" trading. Question from SB94 - What's up with Chinese stock options? Are options going to be listed in China anytime soon? Stephen Ouimette, who plays Bejart in the current Broadway revival of "La Bête", talks about what it takes to hold the stage, with little dialogue, throughout the show's fabled 30 minute opening monologue -- especially after having played the voluble role of Valere himself almost 20 years ago in his native Canada. He also discusses his acting training at the University of Windsor; joining The Young Company at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario immediately after graduation; his 17 (soon to be 18) seasons with Canada's famed Stratford Festival, where his roles have included Mozart in "Amadeus", Hamlet and Richard III; how he has kept himself fresh by alternating work at Stratford with work at many of Canada's major companies; his prior forays to the U.S., including plays at Chicago Shakespeare and a run at City Center in New York in 1998; how he feels about Stratford's "The Importance of Being Earnest", in which he played Rev. Chasuble, coming to New York without him; his rare forays into musicals, notably "Oliver!" in Edmonton and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" in Stratford; what it has been like to make his Broadway and West End debuts in a single year; his anticipation of appearing with Brian Dennehy in both "Twelfth Night" and "The Homecoming" in summer 2011 at Stratford; and the singular experience of playing Oliver Welles in the television series "Slings and Arrows", which afforded him the opportunity to work one last time with his early mentor, legendary Canadian actor William Hutt.
