Have you ever sat down with a glass and nosed and tasted it, and found a ton of notes you didn't know you could get in whiskey. Rye whiskey has done that for me, the spice and sweet, the tart and the fruit. Lets take a trip on the rye side. But first our sponsors are having some great holiday deals go check them out. Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 Hinterhausdiatilling.com https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman Rye whiskey is a type of American whiskey made with at least 51% rye grain:  Ingredients: Rye whiskey is made from a mash bill that includes rye, corn, malted barley, and other grains. The mash bill can range from 51–100% rye.  Taste: Rye whiskey has a spicier, drier taste than bourbon because rye is spicier than corn. It often has a black pepper or clove-like taste.  Distillation: Rye whiskey is distilled to no more than 160 U.S. proof (80% abv).  Aging: Rye whiskey is aged in charred, new oak barrels.  Rye whiskey can refer to two different, but related, types of whiskey: American rye whiskey, which is similar to bourbon whiskey, but must be distilled from at least 51 percent rye grain Canadian whisky, which is often referred to as (and often labelled as) rye whisky for historical reasons, although it may or may not actually include any rye grain in its production process. American rye whiskey Rye grain must make up at least 51% of the mash bill of a rye whiskey in the United States. In the United States, rye whiskey is, by law, made from a mash of at least 51 percent rye. (The other ingredients in the mash are usually corn and malted barley.)[citation needed] It is distilled to no more than 160 U.S. proof (80% abv) and aged in charred, new oak barrels. The whiskey must be put in the barrels at no more than 125 proof (62.5% abv). Rye whiskey that has been aged for at least two years and has not been blended with other spirits may be further designated as straight, as in "straight rye whiskey".[1] Rye whiskey was historically the prevalent whiskey in the northeastern states, especially Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland. Pittsburgh was the center of rye whiskey production in the late 1700s and early 1800s.[2] By 1808, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania farmers were selling half a barrel for each man, woman and child in the country.[3] By the 1880s, Joseph F. Sinnott's distillery, Moore and Sinnott, located in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, was the largest producer of rye whiskey, with a capacity of 30,000 barrels a year.[4][5] In 1886, rye whiskey was produced in 17 states.[6] Rye whiskey largely disappeared after Prohibition. A few brands, such as Old Overholt, survived, although by the late 1960s former Pennsylvania brands like Old Overholt were being distilled mostly in Kentucky.[7] In the early 21st century, an expanding number of rye whiskey brands are produced by Campari Group (Wild Turkey Rye), Diageo (George Dickel Rye and Bulleit Rye), Heaven Hill (Pikesville Rye and Rittenhouse Rye), Suntory Global Spirits (Old Overholt and Jim Beam Rye), The Sazerac Company (Col. E. H. Taylor, Sazerac Rye, and Thomas H. Handy), and various smaller companies. A particularly large producer is MGP of Indiana (formerly known as Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana), which is a distiller for many brands that are marketed by others (including some of the large companies previously listed).[8][9]

As you all likely know, we have a special spot in our hearts for Bulleit, except the single malt (just a huge mistake). So, when we saw the 12 year Rye, we had to give it a shot. The only major change to this rye whiskey was over doubling the age. It is quite a smooth sipper with some good flavors, but does it hold up to the higher price tag than Bulleit Rye?Whiskey: Bulleit 12 Year RyePrice: $50Proof: 92Age: 12 yearsWhiskey Talk: Quite the rabbit hole of episodes, we talk about cars, politics and the bullet train from Los Angeles to VegasLinks:Email: whiskeybizpodcask@gmail.comIG/TikTok/Twitch: @whiskeybizpodcaskYoutube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs16q1Q7hF0m8N3O1YY4gMwPatreon: www.patreon.com/whiskeybizpodcaskMagic Mind: https://www.magicmind.com/whiskeybiz code: WHISKEYBIZ20Promo Codes: podcask5 @ cwspirits.com and empirejerky.comZencastr Code and Link: https://zen.ai/xi20uzdM_kVx_FHps0eaNuSMjrbmF7i5JsWt1yJ37KM

Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens   About Scarlet Shade 14-Year Rye: This is the first ever Rye release to the Orphan Barrel collection of premium whiskies – Scarlet Shade – distilled in Indiana, aged in Kentucky and bottled in Tennessee.  This 14-year-old rye is heralded by sweet vanilla butter cream and lightly toasted oak aromas, tasting of warm baking spices, rye toast and orchard fruits, before warming into sweet orange marmalade and lingering as a dark chocolate finish. At 90 proof (45%). It is a limited release which dropped in May with a suggested retail price of $199.99. Scarlet Shade can be purchased on ReserveBar, Drizly.com or the Drizly app where shipping and delivery are available. About Orphan Barrel Whiskey Co. The Orphan Barrel Whiskey Co. is an endeavor to rescue nearly forgotten barrels of delicious whiskey and share them with discerning adult consumers. We are inspired by creativity, delicious whiskey, good times and great stories. The project is owned and run by DIAGEO and headquartered in Tullahoma, Tenn. However, we like to think the project is founded in dark, quiet corners of rickhouses around the world where great whiskeys are just waiting to be discovered. About Samantha Johnson: Since joining Diageo as a Quality Technician in 2018 and being named a Master Blender in 2020, Samantha has blended a number of fan-favorite, high-quality whiskies including I.W. Harper 15 Year-Old and Bulleit Rye. In fact, her very first blend—I.W. Harper 15 Year-Old—won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition that same year. Samantha initially uncovered her passion for working with whiskey while completing her senior thesis at Hanover College where she sped up the maturation process by rapidly aging the liquid to mimic a 4-year-old aged whiskey. After graduation, she received her Master's in agriculture (with a focus in food science and management) from Washington State University and landed a position as a Quality Technician at Bulleit Bourbon Distillery. The release of Scarlet Shade marks her first offering under the Orphan Barrel brand. Bourbon Lens Coverage and Show Links: Orphan Barrel Whiskey Co. Hey Everyone, Welcome to the newest edition of the Whiskey Flix Podcast! This week, the three of us discuss the comedy movie “Game Night”, while drinking Bulleit Rye. For a comedy podcast, this was ironically the first comedy film we’ve talked about and had a blast doing so. We also chose the weekend of National Bourbon Day to try our first rye whiskey. As always, we ask that you hit that subscribe button and head over and follow us on social media! Bulleit Rye Review – Bulleit Rye lets you know that you’re drinking a rye whiskey right away. There is a ton of peppery spice up front, that finishes with a lingering candy sweetness. We all agreed that this was a fantastic sipping whiskey, but we also recommend using Bulleit Rye in Manhattan’s or an Old-Fashioned. Make sure you check out the video for our official review of Bulleit Rye! -Whiskey Flix We hope you guys enjoyed this week’s episode! Next week, to kick off the official start of summer, we’ll be watching “Dazed and Confused”, while we drink Wild Turkey Longbranch. Until then… Cheers!

Basil Hayden’s Bourbon Review – I think it is safe to say we were all very impressed with what this bourbon had to offer. We got a lot of spicy fruit and charred oak on the nose and tasted sweet notes of cinnamon with peppery spice that lingered on the finish. This medium bodied bourbon made itself known on the palette and we couldn’t help but want to pair this tasty whiskey with a fresh slice of apple pie. Make sure you check out our official rating of Basil Hayden’s in the video! -Whiskey Flix Give us a like and let us know what you guys thought of this week’s episode in the comments below. About This Episode: In 1987, Thomas E. Bulleit, Jr., fulfilled a lifelong dream of reviving an old family bourbon recipe by starting the Bulleit Distilling Company. Inspired by his great-great-grandfather Augustus Bulleit, who made a high-rye whiskey between 1830-1860, Tom left a successful law practice and risked everything to experience life on the frontier. Today, we're not the only ones who are glad he did. A tavern keeper in 1830s Louisville, Kentucky, Augustus Bulleit was dedicated to a single goal: the creation of a bourbon unique in flavor. After experimenting with countless varieties, he finally came upon a bourbon with the character he had long sought after. One fateful day, while transporting his barrels of bourbon from Kentucky to New Orleans, Augustus Bulleit vanished. What happened is still unknown, and his creation nearly disappeared into history along with him. To this day, Bulleit™ Bourbon is distilled and aged in the Bulleit family tradition. High rye content gives it a bold, spicy character with a distinctively smooth, clean finish. Kentucky limestone-filtered water provides a foundation for the bourbon's character, while charred American oak barrels lend a smoky backbone. Our aging philosophy is simple: we wait until our bourbon is ready. As Bulleit enthusiasts know, rye has always been our cornerstone. In this tradition, we're proud to present Bulleit™ Rye – a straight rye whiskey made from 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It's a whiskey with unparalleled spice and complexity. Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters into a shaker or large glass filled with ice and give it a good stir. Strain into a coupe glass and add a Luxardo Cherry. If you can’t find Luxardo cherries try Trader Joe’s Amerena Cherries or use a maraschino cherry. Melissa and Terri talk about confidence and loving Lizzo. Summary: Jody and Matt are playing catch-up this week, reuniting after an interminable hiatus to hear about the babies, learn about memory, and discuss the conduction of a proper taste-test. ALYT- The Technology Company! Seriously, check out Jody's cool new ALYT app in the Google Play store. He's justifiably proud of it, and would love your feedback! You can find it here, or with a quick search on the play store. Thanks, Tryers! Jody's early experiences with kids Names withheld for tin-foil hat reasons An "easy" day of labor became a hectic couple hours and then it was in to the OR The data during labor looked good (solidly in the "gray zone"): The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right Purchase the book using that link to support ALYT! Ignaz Semmelweis, for anyone not familiar with the fascinating story of the man who saved countless mothers' lives by pushing the concept of antiseptic procedures in the mid 1800's. With all of the craziness surrounding hospital/labor/delivery and the accompanying sleep deprivation, Jody is reminded about scuba diving: During scuba certification check-out dives, sometimes the dive master will make you do a simple math problem or draw a fish At depth, simple math can just plain elude you...even though you feel normal Once your little sketch of the fish makes it back to the surface, it looks like the creation of a deranged toddler, not something from your own hand. As Matt puts it: What you think you drew What you actually drew Now that the twins are here, Jody still feels like himself, but it's hard to draw the fish New phone for Jody == Nexus 6 C'mon, big 6! This is a large phone, all the great apps now fit on one home screen Camera gets good photos of babies Great for the internet plumber on the go Volume button placement right next to power button is slightly annoying Which gives Matt an idea for... Future Topic Tease: Technology Choices Matt needs a new phone soon, and is contemplating switching carriers Cable Cutting: Is it time? I think we can help people here. Matt on Restaurants & Memory Jody once offered to host a blog for Matt, and Matt may finally have something to blog about: Restaurants Jody writes on his blog Jody reminds Matt he still needs a domain name, probably from our friends at hover.com Matt & His Partner were inspired to try a bunch of new (to them) places by Laura Reiley's list of 50 best TB restaurants Matt & His Partner get new journals to record impressions in real time. Moleskine Classic Notebook, Pocket, Ruled, Black, Hard Cover (3.5 x 5.5) The idea is to avoid the pitfalls and limitations of memory, i.e. "The Brian Williams effect." Interested in what Matt was saying about B.W. and memory in general? Check out this excellent post on the topic by the always reliable Dr. Novella from Neurologica Blog. Taste Testing Matt first heard about the "triangle test" he mentioned on This American Life, he thinks, but he can't find the episode The wikipedia article on discrimination testing eplains a lot of what Matt was talking about. Bulleit Rye, they're not a sponsor, but they make the best value/money Rye in Matt's opinion. The Pseudoscience of wine tasting: Neurologica Covers this well and provides links to the original science for anyone interested. Women On 20's! Help to make it happen by casting your vote here: Womenon20's.org, and be sure to tell your friends! Matt voted for Margaret Sanger, Clara Barton, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

There is a new face of retirement and financial independence these days and it doesn’t include being over 65 and never working again. That kind of retirement kills, people! Don’t believe me? Take Freakonomics word for it. Let’s talk about what you need to do to achieve the early retirement you want. So maybe you start your own business when you aren’t required to show up at an office forty hours a week. Or you can volunteer. You can go back to school, maybe become a teacher and give back to your community. Social security can be a relic of the past by the time American Millennials reach the age of eligibility. We all need to take our retirement into our own hands. And you don’t have to spend the whole prime of your life slaving for the man. So you need to fund your own retirement through 401K’s, IRA’s and investing in the stock market. The earlier you start, the better. If you are getting a late start, hope is not lost. Full Article Here Show Notes Bulleit Bourbon: This is the whiskey that Andrew was drinking on the rocks. One of my favorite Bourbons for the price. The Bulleit Rye is excellent too.
