For a country known for wholeheartedly consuming cinema from abroad, the Netherlands has never been great at celebrating their own Dutch filmmakers and their films. With the re-release of George Sluizer's Spoorloos, one of the greatest Dutch films ever made, we explore what holds us back from recognizing the great directors of our small nation. Could the prevalence of lousy vacation romcoms in our cinemas indicate a sense of cultural insecurity? And how are the next wave of Dutch filmmakers responding to the cringe we feel about our language? Find out why it's about time we celebrated films from this tiny postage stamp we call home. “I shot the movie in 1993,” rasps the unseen director George Sluizer with a Herzog-like Germanic twang, his haggard voice emanating from the screen as it zooms slowly in on a still photograph: Sluizer's arm is linked casually, almost absent-mindedly, with that of his star River Phoenix, who looks off into the distance (it is unclear whether he knows the camera is there). They are shooting Dark Blood (2012), a morose neo-Western whose production would be forever halted by Phoenix's sudden and tragic overdose outside a nightclub in West Hollywood.

Who would you be if not for destiny? What kind of person are you holding yourself back from becoming? George Sluizer's psychological thriller is best known for its morbidity and shock ending, but on this episode of Trylove, we focus on the stuff in the middle. At its heart, THE VANISHING is two parallel tales of men driven to pursue a new version of themselves: An aggrieved ex-husband and a sociopath who takes a leap into the unthinkable. In our latest episode, we get into the thick of the unconventional thriller, "The Vanishing". This isn't your usual kidnapping drama - this one's got layers, and it's as deliciously complicated as your grandma's lasagna recipe! We get tangled up in an intricate web spun around "what happened" rather than "whodunnit". "The Vanishing" taps into our fascination with the aftermath of a horrific event and explores the relentless grip of obsession. We chew on the tricky question of moving on and the paradoxical timelines of grief. It's a deep dive into the human heart that has us asking: "Can we truly let go?" If you're a fan of true crime, love to wrestle with thought-provoking narratives or just fancy stories that shake things up a bit, you're in the right place. Tim heartily recommends it with a "rent," while Ryan can't help but hold it to the higher standard of a "buy." Are you ready to vanish into "The Vanishing"? Intermission Ep. 13 – The Vanishing (with Susannah Gruder)

Welcome to the return of Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice. For the thirteenth episode, I talked to Susannah Gruder, a New York-based film critic with bylines at outlets including Reverse Shot, Bright Wall/Dark Room, Indiewire, Mubi Notebook, and Hyperallergic. On today's episode, we talked about George Sluizer's 1988 French/Dutch existential procedural, The Vanishing (available on the Criterion Channel). An adaptation of Tim Krabbé's The Golden Egg, the film's premise is familiar: A couple is on vacation (Gene Bervoets and Johanna ter Steege), they stop at a crowded rest stop, and one of them seems to disappear into thin air. But while Sluizer's sleek but collected approach nods to mind game masters like Alfred Hitchcock and suggests the forensic obsessions of latter-day crime thrillers, The Vanishing completely rejects the need for a mystery. Or rather, the rest of the film dispels that mystery––with painstaking banality. In turn, it becomes a bisected critique of two egomaniacs united by an irrational obsession in opposite directions. One viewing that obsession as a tangible delusion and the other debilitated by their inability to know. Our conversation begins with a discussion about the film as a manifestation of an extreme, heretofore unimaginable absence, but that's an entry point into larger ideas about “The Missing Girl” cinematic tradition, the nature of coincidence, and of course, that infamous ending. Enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. Jeff Bridges terrificante e viscido, Kiefer Sutherland ossessionato dalla verità e bravissimo e Nancy Travis, molto in voga in quegli anni, altrettanto brava.

It's about an angel who falls in love with a trapeze artist and is willing to give up eternity and become human in order to be with her. I think this is such a powerful and poetic film about love, connection, and what it means to be human. It's a life-affirming film that always reminds me of the beauty of being alive. The Vanishing (1988)   This Dutch thriller film directed by George Sluizer and based on the book The Golden Egg by Tim Krabbe, follows a man who searches obsessively for his girlfriend following her disappearance at a rest stop. The film stars Bernard-Pieere Donnadieu, Gene Bervoets and Johanna ter Steege. The film was put forward for an Oscar but as it was a Dutch film with too much French dialogue it was disqualified despite winning numerous awards upon its release around the world. The film was adapted into a radio play for the BBC and was remade for the American audience using the same title starring Sandra Bollocks, Keifer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges and Nancy Travis.   We urge all our listeners to listen to this fantastic podcast – The Story Geeks available by clicking on this link:  iTunes:    or Website:  or TuneIn Radio   Opening Credits; Introduction – Rose and Thorn of the Week (.49); Story Geek Segment  (3.51); Forming the Plot (6.27); Film Trailer (07.31); DBD – Book Release (8.59); Lights, Camera, Action (11.21); Epilogue (38.01); End Credits (42.39); Closing Credits (43.20)   Song Credits:  Thank you from Purple Planet Music for our Opening and Closing Credits.

A truly monumental episode. The Essie Davis calls in all the way from Tasmania. You know her from The Babadook, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and her latest The True History of the Kelly Gang. She is a treasure, and she’s on the show today to discuss the 1988 creep fest, The Vanishing. Essie divulges her innermost beliefs on the craft of acting and being able to know the thoughts of a character. She reveals that while working on The True History of the Kelly Gang, she and her co-stars were directed to form a punk band and actually play a show (the band’s name is Fleshlight, if you were wondering). But she also talks about the importance of studying and learning how to be a better actor. This is such a phenomenal and enlightening episode. You can watch The True History of the Kelly Gang on VOD or if you live in LA you can catch it at the Mission Tiki Drive-In.If you haven’t seen The Vanishing…it’s spooky!AND, if you want to check out April’s Staff Pick – watch Bette Gordon’s VarietyWith April Wolfe and Essie Davis

We live in an era of remakes and sequels. With that mind, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) realized there were several films they've seen and loved that were, in fact, remakes of older movies. Thus, the theme for August became Originals! That is to say movies that have been remade that either Jonathan or Corey hasn't seen the source material but has seen the remake. This required a bit of research to pick the movies for this month, but the two did a great job of finding some real classics they have never seen. August will have five episodes so Corey got to pick three movies to Jonathan's two. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 3 - The Vanishing (1988) Corey picked The Vanishing (1988) because she was a fan of The Vanishing (1993) remake by the same director, George Sluizer. The '93 remake stars Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, and Nancy Travis while the original Dutch film stars Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu, and Gene Bervoets. According to IMDb.com, "Rex and Saskia, a young couple in love, are on vacation. They stop at a busy service station and Saskia is abducted. After three years and no sign of Saskia, Rex begins receiving letters from the abductor." Vannak-e előnyei a közönségbarátabb történetvezetésnek?

Mark and Aaron cover the Dutch and French horror/suspense classic, The Vanishing. Having experienced this film numerous times before, we are able to explore the foreshadowing and narrative structure that led us on a wild journey to an even wilder ending. We talk about obsession, control, that harrowing ending, and yes, we even get into the American remake. About the film: A young man embarks on an obsessive search for the girlfriend who mysteriously disappeared while the couple were taking a sunny vacation trip, and his three-year investigation draws the attention of her abductor, a mild-mannered professor with a clinically diabolical mind. An unorthodox love story and a truly unsettling thriller, Dutch filmmaker George Sluizer's The Vanishing unfolds with meticulous intensity, leading to an unforgettable finale that has unnerved audiences around the world. My guest for this month is Herb van der Poll, and he’s joined me to discuss the film I chose for him, the 1988 Dutch–French film The Vanishing. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: The director, George Sluizer, didn’t really direct much else besides this film and its remake The soundtrack definitely has a Tears for Fears vibe to it, which is 100% ok with me Herb checked with his Dutch parents to make sure we pronounced Spoorloos correctly Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is basically perfect as the villain in this film If you enjoy this film, you’d probably also love Alfred Hitchock’s The Lady Vanishes The actress who plays the second girlfriend Lieneke, Gwen Eckhaus, was randomly in a television series in the Netherlands called Spoorloos verdwenen, which I assume is unrelated Getting a compliment on your film from Stanley Kubrick is a big deal to me The first girlfriend, Saskia, is played by Johanna ter Steege. I think I would have enjoyed her in a Kubrick film I want to be very clear that this film is a billion times better than The Blair Witch Project Apparently Curious George is alternately called “Slimme Sjors” and “Nieuwsgierig Aapje” in the Netherlands This film is really nothing like Requiem for a Dream or Audition Seriously, please don’t watch the remake, it’s not even fun ironically I don’t know how much we can blame the remake on the adapted screenplay by Todd Graff, but I would hazard a guess that it’s a lot A more subtle mistake was the changing of cinematographers from the sublime work of Toni Kuhn to the mediocre adaptation by Peter Suschitzky The changes go way, way beyond those of Brazil’s Love Conquers All cut. Also, at least that one includes the entire original film to enjoy Jeff Bridges is usually pretty good, so I’m not sure what happened here. I tend to believe Herb’s Silence of the Lambs theory Milton from Office Space was played by the incomparable Stephen Root R.I.P.D. is really an underrated example of good acting in a terrible film Jeff Bridges is truly terrible here, while Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock are just really bad This film was two years before The Net, but a year after Love Potion No. 9, so I’m not sure how famous Bullock was Nancy Travis is terrible as well, but her character does provide a lot of the unintentional comedy, so I mind less The award Blood Simple got was the Mel Novikoff award Peter Becker and Jonathon Turell didn’t start the Criterion Collection, but they do run it today To my mind, the Coen Brothers, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Blood Simple definitely belong in the collection I am irrationally excited for the arrival of FilmStruck, and just wish it was here already Rent or buy the film from Amazon Rent or buy the film on iTunes Watch the film on Hulu
