This week, Chris DeMakes and Chris Fafalios take a deep dive into Coolio's massive 1995 hit “Gangsta's Paradise,” unpacking the song's gripping themes, powerful lyrics, and lasting cultural impact. From the Stevie Wonder sample that gave it its foundation to the haunting choir that set its tone, they break down the song's composition and the intense storytelling that made it resonate across generations. They also discuss Coolio's journey from Monessen, Pennsylvania, to Compton, his struggles and triumphs, and how this song—written in what he described as a near-spiritual moment—became an anthem of reflection on violence and mortality. Along the way, they touch on personal memories, the song's place in pop culture, and why it still hits just as hard today. Welcome back, today we talked with Herman owner of Dads Hat. They are doing some really cool things, like the. process of gathering the rye. They are doing the old pre prohibition style of rye, 80% rye 15% malted rye 5% malt. Stick around at the end I included my review video. Make sure you check out our sponsors Badmotivatorbarrels.co/shop/?aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman whiskeyshamanpodcast@gmail.com OUR STORY Our mission is to distill and deliver classic Pennsylvania Rye spirits following over 200 years of American distilling tradition. Working with our community and giving back to the whiskey-loving public is a big part of what truly keeps Dad's Hat “Pennsylvania Proud”. Our Heritage Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey is truly America's original whiskey. In the 18th century, many Pennsylvania farmers were using their surplus rye grain to distill homemade whiskey. RYE HISTORY IN THE MAKING American farmers saw homemade distilling as their right and when, in 1791, the new United States Federal Government imposed a whiskey tax these same farmers threatened to secede from the union. This incident, known as the Whiskey Rebellion, was obviously not successful, but it was surely an indication of how important rye whiskey was to our country's early history. Pennsylvania rye was known not just for the independent nature of its makers, but also for the quality of the product itself. WHISKEY REVOLUTION As early as 1810, Pennsylvania's distillers were making over 6 million gallons of rye whiskey annually. Throughout the 1800's the size and reputation of Pennsylvania's rye whiskey producers continued to grow. By the end of the 1800s individual distilleries in Pennsylvania were making hundreds of thousands, and some over a million gallons of whiskey per year. Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey was prized across the United States and around the world. DISAPPEARING ACT Through the early part of the 20th century, rye whiskey continued to enjoy great success. Unfortunately, 1920 brought the passage of the 18th Amendment and Prohibition, which was a disaster for Pennsylvania's rye whiskey makers. To fill the void during the 1920s bootleggers made a hastily contrived, and poorly made, blended substitute that was called rye whiskey. After Prohibition Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey and its distillers never fully recovered from the damage. ALL IN THE FAMILY Rye whiskey was a particular specialty served at the Mihalich family's tavern in Monessen, PA. As a child, Dad's Hat Founder Herman Mihalich lived with his family above the bar, and both his father and grandfather were fond of the all-American spirit. Inspired by a 2006 story about the reemergence of rye, Mihalich, along with his friend John Cooper, would later go on to found Mountain Laurel Spirits in 2011 in Bristol becoming the first Pennsylvania distillery to make rye whiskey since 1990. BRING ON THE WHISKEY REVIVAL! Our mission is to distill and deliver classic Pennsylvania Rye spirits following over 200 years of American distilling tradition. After spending several decades in the wilderness, Rye Whiskey has been rediscovered by whiskey lovers. Dad's Hat supports local charitable events and embraces our Pennsylvania heritage. Our distillery in Bristol, Bucks County is located just five miles from where the Philadelphia Pure Rye Whiskey Distilling Company was located until 1920 in Eddington, PA. We are very pleased to be a part of renewing the proud tradition of fine Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey for years to come.

Hip-Hop legend, Coolio, the man who once lit up the charts with massive hits like “Gangsta's Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage”, has died at the age of 59. Born Artis Ivey Jr. on August 1st, 1963 in Monessen, Pennsylvania -- which is just South of Pittsburgh -- Coolio moved to Compton, California as a kid and then spent his teenaged years growing-up in Northern part of the state where his mother sent him after realizing that Compton was far too dangerous a place for her son to spend his childhood. In past interviews, Coolio has suggested he first became a fan of hip-hop after hearing “Freedom” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. He was captivated by the flow of rapper Melle Mel and would do his best to imitate that iconic style when he first started rapping at the age of 15. Within three years, Coolio says he knew that hip-hop was what he wanted to do with his life, but he'd wind up attending Compton Community College and working as a volunteer firefighter and as security at LAX before devoting himself to his true passion.

This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I interview artist and podcast producer, Traveus Lawson. Traveus Lawson is the Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Always Press Record, Inc. (alwayspressrecord.com) He is the lead producer on more than 30 serial podcasts, with thousands of hours of content within the APRTV vault that is broadcasted globally via 24/7 live streams and On-Demand SmartTV apps. Mayor of Monessen, Matt Shorraw, is looking for tree and bench donations for three city parks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this week's episode, we discuss First + Main Film's most recent installment of the Small Town Spirit Series. Filmmaker John Paget, joins Ryan and Jeff to discuss his experience visiting Monessen, Pennsylvania and how an optimistic young mayor is helping the community overcome its struggles.
Check out our guests for this episode of the 1Hood Power Hour!- Dr. Amesh Adalja: Senior Scholar Johns Hopkins Ctr for Health Security, discussing what to expect in the response to the pandemic as the vaccine continues to roll out, new variant strains emerge and a new administration takes office- State Senator Jim Brewster 45th District: Recently was finally seated in PA's State Senate after winning re-election and several legal battles to uphold his election win.- Mayor Matt Shorraw of Monessen, PA: Just passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination in housing and employment based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
Matt Shorraw was elected the Mayor of Monessen, Pennsylvania in 2018, when he was just 28 years old. Monessen is the archetypical Rustbelt town in the Monongahela Valley in Western Pennsylvania. Like so many other former steel towns in the region, Monessen has suffered from huge employment and population losses and deals with generational apathy. Matt's optimism helped him get elected, but his policy knowledge and small project approach has allowed him to be successful.
Matt Shorraw first came on our podcast as a man with a dream to save a historic building in the small city of Monessen, Pennsylvania. By the time he came back on our podcast, he was the mayor of that same city (garnering both local and national recognition along the way). Now, he finds himself feeling the heat of controversy, as he has been MISSING from several council meetings in a row. People were quick to come out of the woodwork with judgements about his actions, but in this episode, we get the story from the mayor himself. This episode is a MUST LISTEN for EVERYONE (just as this podcast is for EVERYONE, despite the fact that it's titled MEN IN THEIR 30S ONLY).

Matt "The Mayor" Shorraw stops by the podcast to talk about his win in the Monessen, Pennsylvania mayoral primary and his rise to the national spotlight. This inspirational guy first hinted at a mayoral run on his last visit to the podcast back in January of 2016. Now, everyone from NBC News to Mark Ruffalo are talking about this twenty-six year old phenomenon (but we had him first!)

#94 Castle Blood Pittsburgh has it's fair share of horror attractions, ranging from hay rides, to scare houses, forrest trails, and much more. I have not, however, found an attraction that combines all of my favorites things into one... until now. Castle Blood was introduced to me recently by a fan on my Facebook page. He suggested that the experience was right up my alley, boy was he right! The attraction combines immersive theater, escape rooms, AND haunted houses all in one. Didn't think it was possible? Neither did I. Some may say the only draw back of Castle Blood is it's location. It's "home" is located in Monessen, a short 45-50 minute ride from downtown Pittsburgh. I for one, think it makes it a destination, a planned journey, an adventure. When an event is located right in your city, sometimes it is easy to say "Well, I know it is there. We will go next year!" I think one of it's charms is where Castle Blood is located. While they are trying to revitalize it, Monessen is a forgotten industrial town. Hard to think that Frances McDormand was born there with what it looks like today. Most of the building are vacant, overgrown with foliage. The coke furnaces are still running, so the air seems thick. Hardly anyone walked the streets as we drove up on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I know this all sound unappealing, but it makes for a perfect spooky experience. Castle Blood is located in a 100 year old old funeral home. (How grand is that?) While this location is relatively new for them, Castle Blood has been operating for over 20 years. I arranged a podcast and tour with owner Ricky Dick. Ricky has been in this industry since the age of 16. He walked us through the house without giving too much away (since I was planning on coming back) The front room gave me legit goosebumps as the original parlor and viewing room. The rest of the space is disorienting, intricate, fun, and spooky. The actors are there with you as teams of 8 take the challenge of getting through various rooms. It really is all of the things I love in one! Tune into this episode as we walk through Castle Blood! This episode is sponsored by Levity, Pittsburgh's premier sensory deprivation experience. Can Donald Trump deliver on his promises of more jobs and growth, especially to parts of the Midwest that have been starved of employment and hope for decades? Around seven million factory jobs have been lost in the region since the 1970s. President-elect Trump has promised to invest in infrastructure, boost production, revive manufacturing, and cut taxes. He also talked about abandoning the country's trade deals and building a wall with Mexico. How much of this is feasible, and can he do it whilst keeping some kind of reasonable limit on the country's already substantial national debt? The BBC's Ed Butler discuss these issues with Pippa Malmgren, a former member of George W Bush's economic team; Jared Bernstein from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and formerly, Barack Obama's economic team. They are also joined by Lou Mavrakis, Mayor of Monessen, Pennsylvania, a rust-belt town which has been hard hit by the recent decades of decline.
