I kind of felt like I already knew Madi Diaz, even though we'd never met before, when we connected over Zoom this summer for the conversation in episode 112 of the LSQ podcast. That's in part because we have many music friends in common, and I've heard a lot of great things about her over the years. But it's even more the case because her songs are so beautifully direct and intimate; they give you a really vivid sense of her inner world, with all of its relatable nuances. You can hear that gift on full display on albums like her 2021 LP History of a Feeling, and even more powerfully on her latest one, Weird Faith, which came out earlier this year, and of which a deluxe edition arrives later this month. In this conversation, we talk about creative experiences that have impacted her since childhood, whether it's doing laps around her house while listening to her dad play piano, or singing along with Whitney Houston and the Beatles and The Mamas & the Papas as a kid in rural Pennsylvania, or connecting with Patti Griffin's music during a difficult time in her family life, or learning to burst out of the constraints imposed by a judgmental guitar teacher during adolescence, in particular finding her voice and artistic footing during her recent years living in Nashville. Madi heads out on tour with Rainbow Kitten Surprise in early November - get tickets here.

During the covid pandemic, Ela Melo of the acclaimed band Rainbow Kitten Surprise was staying with her parents and went out one night to look at the stars. And the stars, she felt quite certain, were communicating with her. Trying to tell her things. This was to be the beginning of a journey that involved a bipolar disorder diagnosis, psychotic breaks, multiple stints at in-patient psychiatric hospitals, and canceled tours for her band. Now, Ela is feeling stronger, making new music, getting ready to tour, is well supported, and is still allowing for the possibility that the stars really were sending her messages. Tony Hoffer is most known for his colorful, gritty productions and mixes that pop out of the speakers. His work over the years spans across alternative, electronic, rock, pop and indie. Hoffer spent his early years in Miami making music on 2 cassette decks and a reel-to-reel machine. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles and went ‘hi-tech' upgrading to a Tascam 4-track cassette deck falling in love with music and the art of production. Tony started off playing guitar in ‘post-punk' bands and fell in love with sampling his favorite post-punk records (Cure, Chameleons, Bauhaus) into his own songs and productions. His big break was co-producing Beck's double Grammy nominated album ‘Midnite Vultures' which was a hybrid of intricate sampling and live playing. That initially led to him to working with Air, Phoenix and Supergrass. Some additional credits include: M83, The Kooks, Belle & Sebastian, Silversun Pickups, The Fratellis, Depeche Mode, Fitz & The Tantrums, Blondie, Metric, Chromeo, Dirty Heads, The Snuts, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Ziggy Marley. Tony's productions and mixes have been nominated and/or won 7 Grammy's (US), 4 Juno's (Canada), 2 Aria's (Australia) and the Mercury Prize (UK). Most bands that start in a college dorm room don't last past graduation. Not Rainbow Kitten Surprise. The group came close to calling it quits, but its willingness to evolve has kept it going for well over a decade. Leading up to the new album “Love Hate Music Box,” R-K-S underwent profound change. Senior music writer Jewly Hight reports it's the band's first project since singer Ela Melo transitioned ... and imagined new musical possibilities for the group.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Stephen Sanchez over Zoom video.Emerging as one of the year's fastest-rising breakthrough talents, buzzing Nashville-based singer and songwriter Stephen Sanchez debuts his highly-anticipated new EP, Easy On My Eyes, today via Mercury Records/Republic RecordsIn addition to Stephen's global smash “Until I Found You,” the seven track EP includes his luminous new single “See The Light.” On the song, acoustic guitar brushes up against his swooning vocals. A gorgeous hook takes flight above handclaps highlighted by a powerful crescendo with timeless grace and palpable energy. Across Easy On My Eyes, Stephen recounts an unbelievable year since his emergence. He wrote nearly all of the songs on the EP himself and teamed up with Jamie Hartman [James Bay, Lewis Capaldi] and Jon Green [Lady A, Little Big Town] on “Hey Girl.” He then worked with producers Ian Fitchuk [Kacey Musgraves, James Bay] and Konrad Snyder [Madi Diaz, Rainbow Kitten Surprise] in Nashville to bring the EP to life in one-take performances. The project illuminates his talent both as a vocalist and a songwriter. Stirring up excitement for the project's arrival, Stephen continued to reach new career highs throughout the summer. “Until I Found You” has amassed nearly 640 million global streams to date across all platforms, is RIAA Certified Gold, just hit #5 at AAA Radio this week, and continues to climb up the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Recently, he shared the 1950's-inspired music video for the single, which Rolling Stone exclusively gave a first look to and has collected over 20 million views since its release. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Greeting Comittee over Zoom video! Kansas City-based alt-rock band The Greeting Committee just released their second studio album Dandelion. The record was produced by Jennifer Decilveo (MARINA, FLETCHER, Bat for Lashes) and mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala). Anchored by a gorgeously airy vocal performance from frontwoman Addie Sartino, the recent single, “Float Away” opens on a candid piece of confession: “Glad it's raining so I don't have to go outside and pretend I'm happy just to be alive.” With production from Jennifer Decilveo (MARINA, FLETCHER, Bat for Lashes), the track unfolds in fuzzed-out riffs, frenetic rhythms, and incandescent textures as Sartino documents her inner turmoil with an intense level of detail. “There's a line in the chorus that says, ‘Stale rye, once an apple's eye,' which is a way of saying, ‘I used to have so much potential, and now I'm sitting here frozen, and I don't know what to do with myself,'” she notes. After slipping into a moment of anti-nostalgia (“Haven't felt this since/Listening to the 1975 while getting high/In somebody's basement party”), “Float Away” closes out with another bit of personal revelation: “Treading water's getting harder/Don't let me fall another martyr.” But despite its undeniable melancholy, “Float Away” embodies a strangely exhilarating energy thanks to the stormy urgency of The Greeting Committee's sound and the pure catharsis of its uncompromising honesty. Created by illustrator/animator Kezia Gabriella, the video for “Float Away” perfectly captures the track's whirlwind of feeling. The beautifully offbeat and brightly colorful visual follows Sartino's avatar through a series of gently articulated emotional states — isolation, disconnection, overwhelmed confusion — and ultimately finds her rediscovering a subtle yet powerful sense of hope. About The Greeting Committee:Comprised of Addie Sartino, Brandon Yangmi, Pierce Turcotte, and Austin Fraser, The Greeting Committee have fully embraced a spirit of purposeful sharing since their formation in 2014. Founded soon after Sartino and Yangmi got their start playing open-mic nights in Kansas City, the band self-released their debut EP It's Not All That Bad in fall 2015. The EP's lead single “Hands Down” quickly became a breakout hit, paving the way for The Greeting Committee's signing to Harvest Records when they were all still in high school. After making their Harvest debut with the Meeting People Is Easy EP in 2017 and releasing their debut album This Is It in 2018, the band spent much of the next few years on the road, with sold-out headline shows in major markets such as Chicago, Austin, New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. To date, they've toured with the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club, Tennis, Hippo Campus, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise and taken the stage at leading festivals like Lollapalooza and SXSW, in addition to delivering the I'm Afraid I'm Not Angry EP in late 2019 and appearing in Netflix's To All the Boys: Always and Forever. The band's second album Dandelion was released on September 24 via Harvest Records. We want to hear from you! Nashville-based live entertainment professional Jordan Anderson has over seven years of experience in the music industry. Since developing a passion for discovering and sharing music with friends at a young age, she knew music would always play a big role in her life. As a student in the music business program at University of Georgia, she interned with Brown Cat (management, Widespread Panic) and quickly realized she wanted to pursue the live side of the industry. After moving to Nashville and completing an internship with AEG, Anderson landed her first job at Marathon Music Works & Exit/In. Her continued love of music discovery eventually led to booking her first show – Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s first Nashville show in 2016, opened by LUTHI - a resounding sold-out success at Exit/In. RKS was signed by an agent and manager within the week, and Anderson began managing LUTHI not long after. She rejoined AEG full-time as a Marketing Manager and worked on some of her favorite shows of her career so far, from Brandi Carlile’s six-night sold-out run at the iconic Ryman Auditorium to Elton John’s final tour dates in the Southeast. Anderson's most recent role as a Talent Buyer for legendary promoter AC Entertainment allowed her to continue learning in an industry she is constantly inspired by.
