Business owners who openly discuss their desire to be profitable are usually misjudged. Some people think aiming for profit means being greedy or putting money and goods before people when it is the opposite: only profitable auto repair shops can put people first. Profit allows you to pay your debts, be philanthropic, and elevate your and your internal customers' lifestyle. This week, I'm thrilled to welcome Ron Sharyan, aka Obi-Ron Kenobi, back to the show. Ron is the Co-founder and Managing Director of Profit First Professionals, an international network of accountants, bookkeepers, and financial experts on a mission to help companies increase their earnings through the Profit First method. We had a wholesome conversation about profit. Ron explains why he sees profit as a retention tool, an instrument that allows one to give back, and a legacy-building mechanism. He debunks the myths around profit, shares his thoughts on seeking profit to fulfill a business purpose, goes through the difference between seeking profit and living above one's means, and so much more. In This Episode, You Will Learn:What it means to be proud to be profitable (3:00)Who are those who don't "want" to be profitable (8:40)Profit is a retention tool (10:30)The most expensive popcorn in the world and Ron's bragging rights (18:10)How everyone spends their money is no one's business (24:10)Profit first = people first (31:00)Connect with Ron:Profit First University websiteLinkedInTwitterLet's connect:WebsiteLinkedInFacebookEmail: info@maximumoctane.com Hosted on Acast. This special episode of HIV unmuted, the award-winning IAS podcast, marks World AIDS Day, which has taken place on 1 December every year since 1988. On this day, we remember the people we have lost, reflect on how far we have come, and rally together to strengthen our resolve in the HIV response. The latest UNAIDS data from 2021 shows our approach must change: 70% of new HIV acquisitions globally occur among key populations (gay men and other men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, sex workers and their clients, and trans people) and their sexual partners. If we are to ever really tackle the persisting inequalities that fuel the HIV pandemic, our approach must change: we must put people first. In this episode, we expand upon the UNAIDS theme, Equalize, by looking closely at addressing the continuing inequities in the HIV response in a context of limited resources. At a time when we have colliding pandemics, the climate crisis, and rising fuel and food prices, our guests share what takes to put people first. Meet our guests: Yvette Raphael is the Executive Director of Advocates for the Prevention of HIV in Africa. She tells us how important World AIDS Day is to her personally and calls upon the scientific community to put people first in HIV research. Peter Sands is the Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, one of the largest funding mechanisms in global health. He talks about the ‘pandemics of the poor' and explains how putting people first must be an approach, starting with what is being funded. Gaston Devisich & Romina Mauas are a client and healthcare provider from the IAS Me and My Healthcare Provider campaign. Gaston nominated Romina for being a healthcare champion who made a tangible difference in his life by putting him first in the face of discriminatory practices and belief systems.

Also known as The Humble Mechanic, Charles is a Volkswagen technician, and has been a mechanic, a grease monkey, and a car enthusiast for many years. Charles uses his abundance mentality to share how critical it is to any TEAM's success to PUT PEOPLE FIRST.
Technology can acquire a bad reputation in circles where the culture is all about people first. (Side note: All cultures should put people first.) But what people don't always consider is that technology can help us ensure our people are well taken care of and that our human resources team members aren't burdened with work that could actually be automated. After all, our HR staff members are people too. This week on the podcast, Kristie Dierig and I are talking about all the ways that technology can support the people in organizations, how to empower our HR leaders, and how psychological safety might look and feel different for remote teams. And all of this comes back to accountability. Who is responsible for the psychological safety of talent and how can managers, who may not be trained communicators, be more supportive of team members without looking and sounding performative? So many great insights into leading in the 21st century.About Kristie Dierig:Kristie is an experienced corporate HR director turned entrepreneur and consultant, on a mission to elevate HR's impact by putting people first and bringing HR trends to life. You really can add projects while keeping the plates spinning, and without letting your team down. In this episode, we talk about the production triangle, space management, and adjusting priorities while still being realistic. Also, we discuss the one priority you should never adjust, your team. Keeping them on top and staying accountable for making your plan A the plan that will work is the way to making a successful plan that works for everyone.
Darren Murph, Head of Remote at GitLab and author of Living the Remote Dream, joins host Matt Toback to discuss all the advantages of adopting a remote work culture and, in turn, creating a more positive, results-only environment. "There shouldn't be a focus on availability and visibility," says Darren. "The idea is that we focus on the results. We care a lot less about how you get there, or the clothes you wear while you're doing it, or at what time of the day or week you accomplish it." Luckily, they also won't care if you take time to listen to this episode and learn more about the personal benefits of remote work and how you can advocate for this shift in your workplace. Added bonus: Instead of all those "This-could've-been-an-email" meetings, your in-person gatherings will quickly become more productive and meaningful.

Stop Blaming Covid and the Economic Times, let's work on making things better for everyone instead of dividing the world.

Say “smart cities” and most people think technology—sensors, networks, data, the Internet of Things. We need to think people. Technology can help our cities deliver services more efficiently, future-proof assets, and boost transparency, making cities—and citizens—vibrant, healthy, and resilient. The approach to smart planning and design isn't just to implement the latest tech trend, but to understand the needs of your community and identify the right solutions to achieve your goals. In this episode of the CGE, J. Richard Jones discusses the solutions with Nancy MacDonald, Vice President of Urban Places and Anton Germishuizen, Senior Vice President, Business Leader at Buildings.

Ravi Saligram is the President & CEO of Newell Brands a global manufacturer, marketer, and distributor of consumer and commercial products. The company has 30,000 employees and it's brands include a lot of household names such as Sharpie, Rubbermaid, Paper-Mate, Crock-Pot, and Coleman. Ravi has been the CEO at Newell Brands for 2 years now, and looking back at when he first arrived he says the company was in the throes of a turnaround and in the middle of a merger. So he had a huge undertaking from day one. He shares that there were a fair number of integration issues, employee turmoil, and bringing two cultures together was challenging. After the merger the company had around 110,000 skews,49 ERP systems, thousands of apps, 400 websites, and thousands of legal entities. And all of these had to be chipped away at, as it was just way too complex and unnecessary. It was a lot of work, but Ravi says it has been an amazing journey. As a new CEO coming into a company with so many things happening where do you even start? Ravi's first 100 days as CEO of Newell Brands When he first came to the company Ravi knew that it was his job to stabilize the company and get employees aligned on a new purpose and excited to move forward. This situation could seem very intimidating to a lot of leaders. Ravi took his experience as CEO of two other companies, Ritchie Brothers and OfficeMax, into his time at Newell Brands and he began his time at each company in the same way. He shares he always starts with a listening tour, and at Newell his listening tour lasted 100 days. He went around to employees up and down the company in different parts of the world and asked them questions. He would ask things like, what's going well, what's not going well, if you were me and you had this position what would you change in the company, etc...And then he would just listen. He would take notes and look for themes and patterns in the responses he was getting. But he didn't stop there. He also spoke with customers, he looked at what people were saying about the company on social media, he looked at Glassdoor and the reasons why employees had left before he became CEO, and he spoke with stakeholders and shareholders to get their take on things. “So even though we had a turnaround plan, I needed to do the listening tour to validate is this the right direction. And I felt it was, but I also felt what needed most was to uplift our people to really give them hope, to give them a direction, give them a noble purpose, and say, what are we all about? Because I think you want to bring out the best in your people. And the power of what I would say is, if you're 10 employees, you want one plus one plus one, not to equal 10, but to equal 100. How do you take 30,000 employees and make the power exponentially rise to 300,000? So that is what I think leaders have to really bring out. It's not about their being the best. It is about bringing out the best in their people and taking it up to an exponential basis.” And now, 2 years after he started at the company, things have really improved. Even with the pandemic they grew their organic sales by 6% in the first year and in the first half of this year it's gone up 23%. They also were able to take the 110,000+ skews and get them down to 47,000 and they are working to get that down to 30,000 by 2022. They have also reduced 85% of the apps and they went from 49 ERP systems to 2 ERP systems for 90% of their sales. Ravi also has a 92% approval rating on Glassdoor, so clearly his listening tour really worked. “I think a lot of it has been really getting a culture which is focusing on the people, looking at people as our solution, not our problem. And galvanizing them to help solve these problems and pointing them and aligning them.” Ravi's “no jerk” philosophy Starting back at one of his first jobs Ravi felt it was important to create a world where good people finish first, as opposed to last. And that has definitely impacted his leadership style. His “no jerk” philosophy to him means you treat your people with compassion and care. You don't write nasty emails, you don't respond to people without intentionally thinking about how you are coming across, and you try to interact with everyone using empathy and kindness. Ravi says, “Over time, as I've gotten older, I really feel it's important that people want to work with people that they like, and that they respect. And because we spend so much time at work, those relationships are very important. And when you look at attrition and people leaving companies, usually they leave the boss rather than the company. And now I think it's really important, whether you're a manager or a supervisor, or an executive, that we're constantly reinforcing this message.” If Ravi becomes aware of a leader or an employee at the organization who is not treating others kindly and with respect he says the first step is to try to coach them to do better. A lot of times they don't realize how they are coming across to others. It's also crucial, he says, to give constant feedback and to do 360s. But if the person chooses not to change or improve, then they need to find somewhere else where they are better suited. “In our company, at Newell, we talk about truth, transparency, teamwork. And for me that teamwork is so critical. I am very big on people who are all about the company as a whole and their team as a whole, and not about just themselves. If they're all about themselves, I get a little impatient. So at some point, you may have to take them out and I have done that many times.” How to create a safe space for all employees to voice their point of view These days it can be challenging to balance being open, honest, and transparent when some people are so quick to come after you if they don't agree. But finding that balance is important. Ravi says it is important to talk to your employees and know what they care about, so you can take that into account. As a leader you need to be open and honest, but you also don't want to create polarization within the company. He says, “As a leader our jobs, leaders need to unite, harmonize, align, because at the end of the day, you're in the business of serving consumers, rather than having politics. So you do want people to be able to express themselves. But there's also express themselves in the context of the culture you have in your company, because different companies have different cultures, and what may be acceptable in one company may not be acceptable in another.” It is up to leaders to unify everyone inside the organization, no matter what their beliefs are. And if they witness someone trying to cancel someone else because of a belief, it is up to leaders to intervene and get both sides to listen to each other. People need to be able to listen to each other, they don't have to agree with each other, but they have to at least listen. Ravi wants diverse opinions, ideas, and thoughts inside of his organization. So instead of silencing issues, he thinks it is important to debate them, get all sides out in the open and have everyone reasonably listen to each other's thoughts. At the end of the day it's about what is best for the company as a whole. He is also a big believer in employee resource groups or affinity groups. Inside of Newell they have groups for LGTBQ, women, veterans, black employees, etc...And you don't have to directly identify with the group in order to be a part of it, each group welcomes anyone because it creates allies for the people in that group. These groups are safe spaces where people can come together and discuss topics and inform people who may not know what other people may be going through. “I spend a lot of time on, rather than talking about the divisions, how do you unite people on a common purpose, a noble purpose for the company? So that the purpose is far bigger than any individual, even bigger than the CEO, or the board, or the shareholders--that's everlasting.” How to bring the best out of your people In Ravi's experience in leadership across many industries, he says the key to unlocking your people's potential is humility and suppressing your own ego. It's also about balancing the long-term and short-term goals of the company and, as he shares, “Over communicate and be transparent, be truthful. Don't treat employees like babies, make employees part of the solution and don't treat them like they're the problem. And then I always say, use the word we, don't say I, we, because you can never do anything by yourself.” --------------- There are 6 trends that are transforming leadership forever do you know what they are and are you ready for them? In a world where servant leadership is on the up and up. In a world where books like Leaders Eat Last and Put People First can be bestsellers. Hopper stands up and says, as a leader you need to operate with the mindset of "Me First" or as he says it in Swahili, "Mimi Kwanza" This ideology seems destructive on the surface, but once you understand it, it can change your whole life.

“ you never own your sobriety, it's rented and rent is due everyday “ Patrick Gorton, ( @merric370 ) Is an OG anchor podcaster. He came onto the app very early, back in the day when Anchor.fm was interested in revolutionizing radio. If you listened to “ We Live on a Planet “ in the early days, Patrick did a great job of making you feel like you were apart of his live show. The secret that it wasn't recorded live at all. Patrick has a strong belief in taking care of people and doing what he can for his listeners. An attitude that he developed in a career of sales where he learned without building a relationship with someone you have no customers to sell to. A staggering number that just keeps going when you talk to Pat is $47,000 . That is the amount that he has saved in the last 4 years, at the time of this recording that is, while being sober. He was generous enough to give us insight to his path for recovery. We dive into the emerging conversations about mental health that the world wide web has allowed and shares a little bit about suffering from bipolar disorder. How like his sobriety, it a daily thing that you always have to be aware of and manage. Herb Kelleher: Your people come first, and if you treat them right, they'll treat your customers right. When you have a people first mindset/ a strategic engagement mindset, you know it's people first; projects second (Bruno Zheng Wu), you also know it's not about the efficiencies of the organizational structure or systems in place. You know it is based on the effectiveness of your employees. Your employees want to know that they are your highest value. And they are, because they produce everything at all levels. Always remember, you build people first, you value people first, and then they build your business or organization. Employees will give you their best, when they know that you value them as individuals who are individuals with a life – at home, socially, and at work, - who have dreams, aspirations, values of their own, preferences, and a unique approach of their own. They want to know you value their work/life balance as well. Fujio Cho, honorary chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation said: We build people first, then we build cars. Most management styles are about making people into efficient assets, and so make people expendable. You can efficient with things, but you must be effective with people. (Stephen Covey). Being people-centered makes leadership way more effective. Engage your team as individuals who are valued, and have a valuable contribution to make and they will be more productive. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theleadershipboost/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theleadershipboost/support

Under the current health insurance system, many people are struggling because they do not have access to the health care that they need. The goal of health insurance providers is to maximize profits by charging a lot of money and limiting which services will be covered. With the high costs of health insurance, access to health care is available only to those who can afford it. Insurance also limits the treatments and services that the insurer will pay for, regardless of what type of care is actually needed. For everyone to have access to the care they need when they need it, we must move away from a health insurance market and move toward a universal healthcare system. Vermont has lead the way for universal healthcare but there is still much left to do. Our health is on the line and those who are profiting from the current health insurance system, such as big private insurance companies. They are going to fight to keep the system as it is, protecting their profits and self interests. But together we can lead the way for universal healthcare and create a system that puts people first. The People's Budget Address calls for a state budget that first determines the needs of the people of Vermont, and then proposes raising money equitably to meet those needs. In addition, the address talked about the importance of equity in healthcare financing, based on the idea that people must be able to get what they need and give what they can. On the first day of the legislative session this year, a unified, diverse, and growing movement of organizations called Put People First packed the Vermont Statehouse. Put People First believes Vermont can and must protect and fulfill the human rights of all its people, while ensuring a healthy and livable environment.
