When I think of a yoga class, I picture calmness in a room that's perhaps dimly lit with an instructor speaking in a soothing voice to provide peace to participants in attendance. But that's not how every yoga class looks, and tranquility aside, a yoga studio is a business just like any other; it must be profitable. Whether budgets, marketing data and profit seem to fit this Zen picture or not, that's business. My guest this week Chelsea Manganaro has successfully tapped into the best parts of herself to become a thriving entrepreneur in Northeast PA with two locations of her Nearme yoga studio, a cafe by the same name, a new rooftop venture and an annual Yoga Festival taking place on June 8 and 9 on Montage Mountain in Moosic, PA. Get tickets to the Yoga Festival here. For information on the yoga festival visit this link. Head north young men!! Well, not quite that far north... but yes, again!! Ween joins the lineup for the 11th annual Peach Music Festival at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and yes, we had to be there. But wait a minute, a Jam band festival? Really?  Does this mean the band has finally taken on the moniker of "Jam Band"? The anticipation was absolutely ridiculous leading up to this show.  What would the band play?  Would they finally just unleash the full power of Reggae Junkie Jew or LMYLP and slay all of the straights who may not be aware of the true power of the brown?  Or perhaps the opposite?   Not knowing who would be receptive to the music of a demon god, would the band play it safe and stick to a Tried and True path (pun intended)? In any case, being the headliner of Friday night of the Peach Festival is an honor.  Ween wielded the reigns of the weekend along with the likes of Goose, Ziggy Marley, My Morning Jacket, Mike Gordon of Phish, and brother to the band, Les Claypool.  Yeah, things were looking good for hippies of all walks of life. Go north with Weencast, leave your notions of what is and what is not a "jam band" at the door, and find out how Ween handled being in the driver's seat for Friday night.  See if the Boognish could literally start a fire on this mountain. Don't forget to join in our summer contest!! Send us an audio recording telling us about attending your favorite Ween show and why. Was it the music?  The friends?  You tell us!  Weencastpodcast@gmail.com. For episode four, we sat down with real estate developer and the managing partner of Montage Mountain Resorts, Charles Jefferson. We had a very enjoyable conversation that covered Charlie's roots in Philadelphia, his career path, various real estate projects he has worked on, and how he took the leap from the world of real estate development to managing a ski resort and water park. While Charlie has family roots in Northeastern Pennsylvania, it wasn't until 2006 that he made his first investment in the area. Charlie's group purchased the Connell Building in downtown Scranton, turning it from a vacant and dilapidated building to one of the premier residential spaces in the area. In our conversation we talk about the ability to see value where others do not when making an investment, the details of his decision-making process, and why a relentless focus on accountability has been vital to building a high-performing team and successful outcomes. He also describes why creativity and focusing on details and the feeling people get is the key to success regardless of the type of business you are in.In this far-reaching discussion Charlie outlines common themes for successful investing, whether it be real estate, financial assets, or business relationships, and why it is vital to play the long game. He describes why his focus is on long-term results while avoiding the traps of instant gratification that are so common in today's world. Charlie also shares advice he would give those who are considering making a major change in their career or their portfolio.Be sure to listen to the end when Charlie tells the the story of learning how to ski at the age of 52, his vision for Montage Mountain, and why he is very optimistic about Northeastern Pennsylvania in the years to come. Thanks again to Charlie for a great conversation. Enjoy!

Winters deliver marginal temperatures and frequent rain, making any ski area a capital-intensive affair reliant on sophisticated and aggressive snowmaking. The mountains themselves can be crowded and intense, with what feels like a higher-than-average volume of novice skiers careening downhill in unstoppable freefall. Luckily, many of the ski areas are also quite good, with 1,000-foot-plus vertical drops, interesting terrain, and a broad trail footprint. Among these, Montage is one of the best, a small- to medium-sized ski area that feels and skis big, with twisting downhill routes, terrain perfectly and naturally divided by ability, and some of the steepest runs in the Northeast. It’s an interesting place with a checkered history. Opened in 1984, it’s one of the newest ski areas in a nation that has mostly given up on building them. Operated for its first two decades as a non-profit or government entity, it was nearly run into the abyss by subsequent owners, who renamed it “Snö Mountain” and drove it into bankruptcy. Along came an investment group led by Jefferson, a real estate developer who had never skied. It’s an odd ski story in an odd ski state, but it has a happy ending: under Jefferson and company, the resort seems to be on the upswing, with a rapidly diversifying all-seasons business, a growing season passholder base, and an understated approach to skiing that’s focused on workaday maintenance rather than flashy new projects. To gauge how the mountain was doing and what lies ahead, I wanted to talk to the person overseeing the whole operation.Montage from the air. It skis bigger than it looks. All photos courtesy of Montage Mountain. What we talked aboutJefferson’s background rehabilitating old properties and the transformation of downtown Scranton; how a non-skier comes to own a ski area; when you just have to believe that a waterpark is buried beneath 15 feet of snow; why buying the ski area didn’t intimidate someone who’d never been in the ski industry; believing in your team; how managing a building is similar to running a ski area; becoming a skier in your 50s; the Snö Mountain debacle; cleaning up the mess after buying Montage out of bankruptcy; how to grow your season pass base by 1,000 percent; why a ski resort can’t just be a winter business; big-time hotel plans; Montage’s unique mid-mountain parking lot; what’s next for the Long Haul triple and why it won’t be a replacement; the problem with high-speed lifts; the state of the lift fleet in general; why we’re unlikely to see a carpet in the beginner area; expansion possibilities into the appetizing sea of treed inclines surrounding Montage; why you won’t find named glades, but the policy is border-to-border when the snowpack materializes; when to groom the North Face and when to let it get bumpy; Montage’s amazing natural terrain segregation; snowmaking upgrades; keeping the guns blazing well into March; how much cash it saves when free snow falls from the sky; the logic behind the ultra-affordable early-bird season pass; the potential for an Indy Pass partnership; why Montage offers $40 Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday lift tickets, rentals included; adapting to Covid; and the outdoor Midland dining area and whether that will stick around in future seasons.           Skiing Lower Fast Track, with the reservoir in the distance. What I got wrongIn our discussion of $40 lift tickets, I portrayed that as a Monday through Friday deal, but in fact those tickets are only available Monday through Wednesday (Jefferson did correct this but I wanted to mention it again here). At the beginning of the interview, I also asked about Jefferson’s work in Philadelphia, when in fact his recent career has been dedicated to Scranton. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewBecause this podcast focuses on the Northeast and Pennsylvania is a large and important Northeast state that I have, 16 months into the podcast, mostly ignored. This was more circumstantial than intentional, but I’m happy to finally spotlight one of the southernmost Northeast ski hills. Montage, with its steep runs and expansion potential and ample vertical, seemed like a strong starting point. And it was. What I didn’t realize when I booked the interview was Jefferson’s novel backstory, the working-class-kid-turned-real-estate-developer-turned-ski-area-owner-who-had-never-skied. I was expecting some jet-setter who skied Montage when he couldn’t make it out to his slopeside mansion in Aspen. This is something very different, more down-to-earth and practical, a narrative of determined make-it-work-ism in a tough and unforgiving industry that often savages its most seasoned operators. It’s hard not to love the story and to love this mountain as a result.  Why you should go thereBecause if you live in New York City or Philadelphia or anywhere near either of them, it’s close. And it’s good. Real skiing, with a real thousand-foot vertical drop, moguls sometimes, trees when the snow flies. The lifts are fixed-grip and a bit poky, but the place is open 12 hours most days and you will get your vertical in. If you’ve never skied Pennsylvania, this is a good starting point, a place that at once showcases the ski state’s at-its-best potential and its frenetic downhill energy. It’s also an affordable place, with a $399 season pass ($349 for 2020-21 passholders) that’s good for the rest of this season, and $40 all-day lift tickets Monday through Wednesday (it rockets to $89 the other days, as it probably has to just to manage crowds). Plus, Midland is one of the great outdoor spaces in Northeast skiing:Midland was a Covid adaptation that will stick around well after Covid restrictions lift.Additional resourcesLift Blog’s Montage chairlift inventoryAn America’s Best Friend podcast interview with JeffersonA local news article from when Jefferson was buying the mountain in 2013A Discover NEPA video profiling Montage from a couple years back:COVID-19 & Skiing Podcasts: Author and Industry Veteran Chris Diamond | Boyne Resorts CEO Stephen Kircher | Magic Mountain President Geoff Hatheway | NSAA CEO Kelly Pawlak| Berkshire East/Catamount Owner & Goggles for Docs founder Jon Schaefer | Shaggy’s Copper Country Skis Cofounder Jeff Thompson | Doppelmayr USA President Katharina Schmitz | Mt. She writes stories about her family's experiences as refugees and immigrants to the United States, and about her own experience of home as a moving target. When she's not writing, she enjoys knitting, rock climbing, pottery, and traveling. At the time of this reading, she is in La Serena, Chile for the solar eclipse. She has two cats, Fred and Milkshake, both of whom she's infinitely proud of.

In Episode 23, we chat with our own Brittany Boote about her experience as an actress and assistant director on “The Barre,” a new crime drama television series set and produced in Wilkes-Barre. We also planned to interview fellow local actor James Callahan, who played the role of Bryan on the show and is well-known in the local music scene, but he had to cancel due to a family emergency. We still manage to have a good conversation and a great time, though, as always. Beer Boys in Wilkes-Barre is hosting a Founders Brewing Company tap takeover, so we drink some crowlers of three of the beers they have on tap during the show - Frootwood, cherry ale and ages it in oak barrels that held both bourbon and maple syrup, Lizard of Koz, a stout brewed with blueberries, chocolate, and vanilla aged in bourbon barrels, and Backwoods Bastard 2015, a bourbon barrel-aged version of its Dirty Bastard scotch ale. They’re very different than the Founders beers we tried last week, but they’re boozy and rich with flavor. We also take a moment to remember Pittston singer Janet Rains, better known as Jane Train, who died just hours earlier from injuries she sustained in a tragic accident in Florida last month that took the life of Adrenaline Mob bassist David Zablidowsky. Whether you knew her from Wilkes-Barre pop rock band M80, her solo work, Headbanger's Ball, Not by Sight, or just as that awesome lady with the bright red hair, Jane was an integral part of the NEPA music scene for many years, so we share some stories about her before we get into the interview. Then we talk about the premiere screening of the first episode of “The Barre” at the River Street Jazz Cafe in Plains Thursday, Aug. 24, how and why Brittany got involved with the show, the authenticity of the scripts, influences from shows like “The Wire,” what she learned as an assistant director, landing the role of Lydia and how she prepared to play a heroin addict, working with the cast and crew from New York, how Wilkes-Barre became an integral part of the series and what it was like filming in familiar areas, the controversy surrounding the production and responding to those who think it will make the city look bad, comparisons to other drug and gangster stories, the story of how James Callahan ended up in his role at the last minute, acting in an anti-drug commercial and auditioning New York City as a kid, how the show helped her deal with the death of her mother, working on TV distribution of the series, Wilkes-Barre’s HBO connection, and more. Additionally, we answer some questions and comments from live viewers and give away free tickets to the see the I Love the 90s Tour at The Pavilion at Montage Mountain on Saturday, Aug. 26 with TLC, Coolio, Tone Loc, Rob Base, and Young MC. Before the interview, we drink some crowlers of Sunny Spot by Susquehanna Brewing Company in Pittston courtesy of our newest sponsor, Beer Boys in Wilkes-Barre, and this is a different version of the summertime grapefruit shandy that you can only get at Beer Boys. This one is dry hopped with Citra, cask conditioned, and served at 55 degrees, giving it a much more natural, juicy, and fresh taste. Then we talk with Patrick about drawing as a kid and picking it up again later in life, developing as an artist, how jam bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish have inspired his work, taking music and turning it into art, following bands around and being a part of jam band culture, the importance of family-friendly venues like Mountain Sky in Jermyn, his relationship with his young daughter and her role in his work, creating his own original comic book, selling his art through Jeweled Moon, dabbling in local theatre and what movies are missing today, working in the local electrical workers union, the Church of the Latter-Day Dude, and more. We also answer some questions and comments from live viewers. In The Last Word segment, we discuss the ongoing controversies surrounding Camp Bisco in Scranton, debating its pros and cons and whether its issues with drugs and other crimes are overblown by the media or if The Pavilion at Montage Mountain should not agree to host the EDM music festival again after three years as we read and react to comments we received from readers.
