Documentary film? Music film? Hmmm…music documentary film! This week we get all grungy as we wade in to the murky depths of Cobain: Montage of Heck, a documentary focusing on Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain using many audio and video home recordings to create a very intimate and sometimes disturbing portrait of his life.

Pop Screen makes another foray into the documentary realm this week, with Aidan rejoining regular host Graham to look at Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck. An ambitious film rooted as much in its subject's imagination as it is the facts of his life, it was highly acclaimed as a portrait of the late Kurt Cobain, even as its strict factual accuracy was debated. As well as Morgen's film, we'll also be discussing Nirvana's legacy across the decades, and how Cobain and the wider grunge scene reacted to his sudden megastardom. There's also choice cuts about Cheap Trick and Eels, as well as the possible world-first of a nuanced perspective on Cobain's widow Courtney Love. Prácticamente minutos después de salir del cine nos sentamos delante de los micrófonos para hablar con Juanjo, Rafa, Angus, Beatriz, Paloma, Andrés, Jose, Edu y Alfredo sobre sus impresiones del documental. Utilizamos un montón de sonidos que encontrarás en la película incluido el propio montaje íntegro que realizó Kurt en 1988 cuando se divertía creando atmósferas difíciles de digerir. Esa cinta fue la que ayudó a Brett Morgen a iniciar la historia de uno de los mejores compositores de la década de los 90. No podíamos empezar de otra forma, escuchando la pieza de audio que da nombre a la película y algunas canciones inéditas de Kurt. Hacemos un repaso por el Record Store Day y escuchamos los vinilos de Foo Fighters y Citizen Dick que no pude conseguir y que ahora puedo comprar a un precio de 5 ó 6 veces su precio en eBay. (...) Ponemos por primera vez el nuevo trabajo de Faith No More titulado "Sol Invictus", un par de canciones de lo nuevo de Blur, "The Magic Whip" y del disco en directo que acaba de lanzar Eels, grabado en el Royal Albert Hall.
