Live Sound Bootcamp is on our Podcast network and hosted by Ryan O John, Brendan Dreaper, and Joe Santarpia. In this episode, the hosts catch up with Michael Lawrence, a freelance audio engineer well known for his work with the Signal to Noise podcast, as well as his incredibly geeky articles for Live Sound International and ProSoundWeb, Smaart webinars, and of course, his work as a systems engineer. He discusses his career path, provides some great tips on reading and reference material, and offers valuable hints and suggestions for people looking to get into systems engineering and design. He also talks about how to communicate effectively with system engineers.Make sure you check out and subscribe to their podcast for more great episodes like this one.Live Sound Bootcamp is sponsored by Rational Acoustics.About The Hosts:Ryan O John is a musician turned engineer, turned product designer, turned podcast host. He was playing instruments by 5 years old, with his first shows at age 12, recording his own albums by 13, and touring by 16 — he leans heavily toward the geeky side of sound. From small local clubs to international stadiums, metal to pop, Ryan's career in live sound mixing has covered a lot of ground traveling the world with a ton of artists including Jessie J, Andy Grammer, Tove Lo, Banks, Liam Payne, Capital Cities and many more. Beyond just touring with pop and rock acts, he also designs audio consoles and software, mix records, and race cars. After Brendan Dreaper picked up the drums in middle school, live music became an important part of his life. With a number of diversions under his belt, which included studying economics and working as a professional glassblower, he returned to music and found his footing behind the mixing console. Working from bar gigs to local festivals and eventually to touring with Magic! and Snoh Aalegra, Brendan has had the pleasure of making live music happen. Outside of geeking out about live sound on a podcast, he likes to play drums with the band vverevvolf, produce music and get real nerdy about anything Lord of the Rings related. The third member of the trio, Joe Santarpia, is a live sound and recording/mixing engineer of 15 years, tour manager, musician and producer. His touring resume includes Mac Demarco, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Connan Mockasin, Best Coast, Surfer Blood, Inner Circle and others. Joe was a former staff engineer at Circle House Studios in Miami, FL and Faultline Studios (RIP) in San Francisco. during his free time he is an electronics hobbyist and recreational ice hockey player.

On today's show Shana shares a plethora of new podcast high fives for us to check out. See below! Theresa confesses her failure to stand up to a leering police officer and wonders what that means about her and her place in feminism. In studio guest, Susan Barnett, writer and former journalist, TV News Anchor and host of 51% The Women's Perspective, joins us to talk about her life as a journalist and reporter and how she eventually gave it all up to work on her fiction, first with the publication of her book of short stories, The View From Outside, and now her current fictional work about a traveling con-artist who awakens life in a small town which we hopes is available real soon. Lindsey Mills, touring musician, record label owner and community builder talks about growing up in Florida with parents who nurtured and supported her creative endeavors, what it's like touring and how she keeps community back home. This week's self care begins with Full Moon words of wisdom from Theresa's favorite mystic, MysticMamma. She reminds us to "ground into the fertile Earth that holds us." Shana and Theresa discuss how to do that when the earth is overwhelmed with ticks. Do DEET or not to DEET, that is the question. Help us!!! Next week we sit down with Aja Hudson of Earth Designs Cooperative and Emily Vail, Estuary Watershed Outreach Specialist at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Seattle's 8-piece progressive outfit The Complex Dialect recently revealed official details for their debut album, Change, which has been set for release on December 1, 2017. Produced at Seattle's infamous London Bridge Studios by Eric Lilavois (Saint Motel, Atlas Genius, Surfer Blood) and mastered by Ed Brooks (Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Pearl Jam), Change is a representation of both "problem" and "solution" perspectives when engaging with the ever-changing world we deal with in present time. Their powerful, progressive message caught the attention of HuffPost, who teamed up with The Complex Dialect to unveil their latest single, "One Constellation." "One Constellation" starts off Side B: Solution, and is a song about perspective. It's about stepping away from our earthly issues and looking for a deeper understanding of our existence in the true grand scheme of things.
Vincent Benett is the frontman for the Acacia Strain. For the past sixteen years, the New England collective have risen through the metal and hardcore ranks to now stand as one of its generals. Bennett paid his dues early on, starting out by playing basements and dives of Massachusetts. His forthright and self deprecating attitude is ammunition for bleak and dark lyrical content combined with crushing riffs is the band's crux. It is on full display on Acacia Strain's latest album, "Gravebloom" - available NOW via Rise Records. John Paul Pitts is the lead singer and songwriter for unwavering indie rockers, Surfer Blood. John sits down for a quick chat about growing up in south Florida, forming the band in art school, some of the high and lows of the bands storied career which could serve as a cautionary tale. Pitts has had his share of personal triumphs and woes over the past few years, but that has not impeded his resolve to keep the band going despite a few setbacks along the way. Surfer Blood's newest record, "Snowdonia" is out NOW on Joyful Noise.
For their WCPO Lounge Acts session, Surfer Blood performed an acoustic set of songs new and old. Indie-rockers Surfer Blood saw a huge buzz breakthrough with “Swim” in 2009 before hitting a rough patch as frontman John Paul Pitts’ dealt with personal drama and the tragic loss of 27-year-old guitarist Thomas Fekete to his battle with cancer. The February release of their fourth album "Snowdonia" represented a fresh start as Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz added high school buddies Michael McCleary and Lindsey Mills into the mix as guitarist and bassist. Pitts wrote specifically with the new member’s talents in mind. Set List: Frozen Floating Vibes [interview] Into Catacombs Matter of Time To read more and find videos from this session visit: bit.ly/2rVBvL4 For more on Surfer Blood visit: http://surferblood.com For more Lounge Acts visit: http://wcpo.com/LoungeActs Recorded and mixed by Brian Niesz in the WCPO Lounge in Cincinnati, OH on June 22, 2017.
Surfer Blood passed through Denver earlier this month for a headlining show at Larimer Lounge. We met the Florida indie rock band at the venue to record an exclusive performance and interview. Surfer Blood this year released the album "Snowdonia," its first full-length since the death of guitarist and founding member Thomas Fekete. The band performed three songs and spoke with Alicia Bruce Mitchell about coping with their bandmate's death, the dream that inspired "Snowdonia" and a forthcoming covers record.

On June 14, 1989, in Beverly Hills, California, Gabor was accused of slapping the face of a police officer named Paul Kramer when he stopped her for a traffic violation. This episode features songs that evoke a spirit of L.A. & the absurdity of modernity.Broadbent: ... I find the world quite good enough for me -- rather a jolly place, in fact.Keegan (looking at him with quiet wonder): You are satisfied?Broadbent: As a reasonable man, yes. I see no evils in the world -- except of course, natural evils -- that cannot be remedied by freedom, self-government, and English institutions. I think so, not because I am an Englishman, but as a matter of common sense.Keegan: You feel at home in the world then? Broadbent: Of course. Don't you?Keegan: (from the very depths of his nature): No. -Bernard Shaw: John Bull's "Other Island", Act IV. TBTL live from Bumbershoot, featuring Chris Hardwick, Kumail Nanjiani, and Surfer Blood!
This week on Snacky Tunes Finger on the Pulse pop a few corks with Johnny Cigar and Brian Quinn of The Noble Rot, a sort of traveling wine saloon that acts as a wine-centric foil to the various food-centric supper clubs in NYC. They talked about wine’s potential to intimidate, delicious super-cheap bottles, and the questionable benefits of cork-smelling. Musical guests Surfer Blood came by the studio for an amazing acoustic live set. They also talked about their first tour in a high end (and bee filled) tour bus, playing CMJ, internet critics, and a nostalgic look back at the band’s first surge in popularity. This episode was sponsored by Fairway: like no other market.
TBTL Live from Bumbershoot featuring Chris Hardwick, Kumail Nanjiani, Surfer Blood, and way too many Human Centipede references for a show that small children attended.
This week, another update in Hayden Christensen's increasingly depressing life, Casey's an old crank and has a beef with Apple, Chris may take the plunge into the unknown depths of Epix, and a song from Surfer Blood. The boys also discuss who they think should move from movies to TV, agree that Gary Oldman is a good screamer, and Casey is a fan of Bruce Willis. Also, new bed music! Will it stay? Who knows?!
Treasure Island is back! The lineup has been announced and we are very excited about the artist on the bill. Last week I had the chance to interview the guys from Hooray For Earth before they played at Cats Cradle in Carrboro alongside The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Surfer Blood. We discussed their latest EP entitled Momo, future plans for a full length, how they all met each other, how they got the name Hooray for Earth, and much more.
Every night — or really, early morning — during South By Southwest, Bob Boilen, Carrie Brownstein, Robin Hilton and Stephen Thompson will meet up on some random street corner in Austin, Texas and break down the events of the day. And every morning during the festival we'll post these lively and increasingly loopy recaps here and on the blog. In this second installment, the gang met up around 2:30 a.m. to rave about NPR Music's SXSW daytime party at The Parish, which included Brooklyn Rider, Smith Westerns, Local Natives, G-Side, Surfer Blood, and Sleigh Bells. They also talk about some of the shows they were able to catch later that night in venues all across Austin.
The Florida band's self-described "anthemic, bombastic, life-affirming indie-pop" project seems to have arisen as spontaneously as its name, which came up when one of Surfer Blood's members shouted it out in a car at random. The group performs as part of NPR Music's South By Southwest daytime party at The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 18, 2010.
The March MMMpod features conversation and music from Surfer Blood and The Allman Brothers Band (There's a double-bill you're not too likely to see. However, Gregg Allman does mention Hannah Montana!). We also speak with Vampire Weekend and the Dropkick Murphys.
Will, Barrett and Chris discuss two new bands: Surfer Blood, which sounds like a mix of Journey, Pavement, .38 Special, Band of Horses, R.E.O. Speedwagon, My Morning Jacket, the Shins, Paul Simon and Vampire Weekend; and Neon Indian, some lo-fi techno from Austin.
