Is this how radio contests work? What's Jabberjaw's deal? And who should be the captain of the S.S. Inspiration? We take a look (in a book) at the answers to these questions and more as we watch Season 2, Episode 17 of Family Matters.Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. Was the Winnebago Man truly the Angriest Man In America? Were any of these board games on your family fun nights in the 1980s? How about some of the forgotten 1970s cartoons?Episode 141 of the podcast is unique in a few ways. It includes a first, that being a review of a full documentary, The Winnebago Man. Jack Rebney became a viral sensation in the early days of YouTube thanks to his profanity-laden outtakes from a Winnebago commercial shoot in 1989. However, did he deserve the moniker 'the angriest man in America?' Game nights still exist today. In the 1980s though, before the Internet and the prevalence of video games, a lot of entertainment came from playing board games. We go way Back In the Day to look at a few of the memorable and beloved board games that were released in the 1980s.  Not every cartoon that makes it to television can be a huge success. Some of these come and go and are lost to history. This week's Top 5 looks at forgotten 1970s cartoons. Did you watch any of these?A new This Week In History and Time Capsule will focus on the wild Paul McCartney death urban legend. Pain was formed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1994 by friends Dan Lord, Mark "Pose" Milewicz, and Adam Guthrie. Guthrie was a guitarist-songwriter, Milewicz played bass guitar, and Lord became the band's songwriter and lead singer.  Pain played music variously described as pop punk, punk rock, and ska. However, in February 1997, lead singer Dan Lord took to the band's website to categorically deny that Pain was a ska band: "There are a lot of styles we emulate and ain't none of 'em from the island of Jamaica. So please, PLEASE, unless you're just havin' some fun with us, don't call us a ska band."  The band released four albums, toured the world, and produced original music for the mid-nineties reboot of the kids cartoon, Jabberjaw. In 2000, while Pain was talking with interested record labels, Lord shut down Pain to pursue his religious calling. Lord received his Master of Theology from the University of Dallas, married, and became an author and father before reconnecting with Guthrie in 2018. In the years leading up to 2018, Lord continued writing music and found that most of his new material was best suited as Pain songs. He and Guthrie agreed that these new tracks should be recorded and released. When Milewicz declined to return, Lord and Guthrie felt it was inappropriate to call the group Pain without one of its co-founders... and Salvo was born.  The new band released their first album, Off the Charts, in 2019. In August of 2022, Salvo released The Traveler.  Dan Lord and Adam Guthrie sat down with Geoff and Keith to talk about their career... and what's next for the band. I'm in Los Angeles at the beginning of my Improv exploration. During an advanced class I'm taking, I go out on stage to do my scene. So I'm sitting there, painting my nails in this scene, when my scene partner comes in and starts suddenly lighting fireworks and firecrackers all around me. I go on painting my nails, not reacting to the situation. The instructor stops the scene right there and says, “Kymberlee, react.”  I'm thinking, “What do you mean? I'm focused. I'm painting my nails.” She responds, “I need you to react with the fireworks going on around you. What's your point of view on that? Do you care? Do you not care? Even if you don't, we need you to react in some way.” Lightbulb moment.  So often, we as storytellers and speakers are so focused on getting to the end of the story or the speech. We're trying to make sure we deliver every line and paragraph correctly that we forget to react and respond to what just happened. And oftentimes, that reaction might just be internal.  My guest today, Niccole Thurman, lives a life reacting as an actress, writer, and Improv performer. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll hear about how she does it and answers questions like: What's the difference in choosing how you react within a role or character in life (or through Improv) versus a scripted version? What different facets can flow into creating a variety of characters? And what can you do when you're having trouble adapting to a role or character? What you will learn in this episode: How to best get into the head of a character you're creating (or co-creating) How to deal with rejection as a storyteller (or in life generally) What story element truly makes comedy work and go viral Who is Niccole? Niccole Thurman is a Los Angeles-based actress and WGA award-winning writer. She is the voice of Jabberjaw, Squiddly Diddly and Dee Dee Sykes in the HBOMax series Jellystone. Her past work includes voiceovers and appearances on: Grace and Frankie and Desperados (Netflix); Kenan , Indebted, and Superstore (NBC); A Black Lady Sketch Show (HBO); and Shrill (Hulu). She was also a correspondent on Comedy Central's The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper. As a writer Niccole has worked on the ESPYs, the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (hosted By Jimmy Kimmel), Sherman's Showcase (AMC), Baking It (Peacock), Haute Dog (HBO Max), Phoebe Robinson's show Everything is Trash (Freeform), and Robert Smigel's Let's Be Real (Fox). When Captain Thorpe suspends him, Gina gets on the case and discovers there may be some truth to the phantom Eddie describes. Meanwhile, Hobie tries to hide a dog from Mitch and Cort buys an antique diving suit that immediately ends up stolen. Justin expects werewolves, but gets Eddie instead. William Fichtner's part in Go once again comes up in conversation. Erik accuses the AI of always picking Adam Driver. The pair disagree on The Faculty. The ocean proves to be a horror. Justin credits Craig with a fantastic physique. He also finally encounters what Allison Pregler calls "the Death Pier." Captain Thorpe's descent into madness continues. Geography Corner centers on the Los Angeles area beaches. Mitch's culpability in regards to the dog's fate is explored. Eddie's petulance when Shauni shows concern is also examined. From Looney Tunes to the Super Friends, who didn't love the weekly ritual of getting up early on Saturday mornings for a few hours of animated goodness?! Whether these cartoons were made by major Hollywood studios, like Warner Bros. & MGM, or production companies like Hanna-Barbera & Ruby-Spears, they all had one thing in common: a desire to create shows that held a sense of innocence, untouched by the cynicism of the world at large. Except for maybe Looney-Tunes…that stuff was perhaps just a tad...dark.I want to hear from you, Slackers! What did I miss? What were YOUR favorite Saturday Morning Cartoons?

What do the guys think of Skatune Network's cover of the Pain song "Jabberjaw"? Why is it important that their fans know they don't play ska? And then, at long last, we submit releases by Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution and Streetlight Manifesto to the Hornpod Ska Canon. Was Tomas Kalnoky talking about doing the BOTAR project before he even left Catch-22? How old are some of these songs, actually? This week while Blasko is out, Mike is joined by Emily White, author and host of the Interning 101 book and podcast. Mike: “I've been enamored with Emily White since we met as panelists at The Yellow Phone Music Conference in 2014. She has continued to inspire me with her passion and consistent record of achievement. As a CEO of a boutique music company, we mentor and work with interns every day and have always wanted to provide them with a valuable learning experience. That has been made all the better once we began following the advice of Emily White's Interning 101 book. Emily's charismatic personality combined with her extensive industry knowledge makes her a natural to be a podcast host.” The Interning 101 Podcast takes listeners through the journey of how to successfully navigate and succeed in one's field of choice. Episodes include interviews with Warped Tour Founder and USC Professor Kevin Lyman, Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls, Scarlet Sails, Violent Femmes, NIN), as well as Emily's current business partners who began as interns a decade ago. The show also interviews current interns to experience the reality of the interning landscape in 2018 as well as Downtown Music Publishing Head of People Lisa Hauptman, Composer Matthew Wang (Netflix, Hans Zimmer Productions), and USA Swimming's Jake Grosser. The Jabberjaw team is also producing Interning 101 “mini-episodes” in which White will delve into specific topics from Interning 101 the book to educate the audience on modern business best practices, and more, in detail. Adds White, “It's important that we keep the interview episodes focused on our awesome guests. But I want to ensure that the audience is getting educated on the crucial tenets of the Interning 101 book and for those that want to dive deeper, these episodes are perfect to learn how to succeed in modern business and beyond. ---- Mike and Emily discuss the article "How To Get An Internship In The Music Business Without A Single Contact" by Ariel Hyatt of CyberPR.
