On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind. Third Eye Blind are in the midst of their Summer Gods tour with Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A, both of which grew up listening to the '90s vets. The band are playing nearly 20 songs from their wide-spanning catalog nightly, including perennial favorites “Jumper,” “Never Let You Go,” and “Semi-Charmed Life,” and the run goes until early August. “I have this sense that I am feeling the same way everybody else is — that we need a summer tour so badly,” Jenkins says. “We need the lights, the noise, the heat, and everybody up close to each other. Additionally, their 1999 sophomore album, Blue, will turn 25 later this year. Listen to their conversation on Artist Friendly wherever you listen to podcasts. Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind checks in to talk about the band's 2024 tour & the one item that's not allowed to be with them on tour.
We caught up with the lead singer of Third Eye Blind Stephan Jenkins ahead of their "Summer Gods Tour" which will come through St. Louis June 29th.
I've never talked with Stephan Perkins from Third Eye Blind, so I can check him off my ever-growing list of rockers I've interviewed. Right off the bat, we talked about touring, and how much he likes it. He commented on how concerts bring us together "That collective sense of feeling lets us know that we're not alone." You can see him and Third Eye Blind along with Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A on July 7th at Pine Knob Music Theater. We talked about a recent unplugged performance he did at an Emo club. "It was fun, man, it was fun," he said about the impromptu show. Third Eye Blind Teams Up With Detroit's Own Shinola There are also a couple of other things we talked about, one is their collab with Shinola. Stephan talked about how he likes that the watches are Made In America and the local craftsmen who make them. They have a limited edition watch coming out. "It's super cool. It's obviously American-made". He said they'll be visiting the store when they come through, as well as Jack White's Third Man Records. How Did His Life Change In The 90s? His life changed in a huge way in the 90s when Third Eye Blind broke. As I asked him this, he paused for about 5 seconds before answering. He went on to talk about how he lived in an apartment with 6 roommates, one bath and he slept on packing foam. He spoke to the bands he started or joined that fell apart until the band finally broke. After massive tours with U2 and The Rolling Stones, he found himself driving home after two years on the road. "Tears streamed down my face because I realized where I'd gone to, this delineation of points," he said. We wrapped our conversation by talking about how the thrash scene in San Francisco where he's from had any effect on his musical tastes.
Summer Justice and Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind talk about the upcoming Summer Gods Tour (making a stop through Red Rocks June 26,) bands on the lineup, sea kelp, a new "fancy" vinyl collection, and a possible resurgence in Stephan's acting career!

How many hits can you have and still be misremembered as a one-hit wonder? In the latest episode of Columbia House Party hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy try to find out by diving into Third Eye Blind's self-titled album. The successful debut produced five singles over the course of two years, landing them on era-defining compilation albums and every late-90s and early-00s coming-of-age soundtrack. Semi-Charmed Life may be the tune people remember them for the most - and it's a great snapshot of what remains a pretty definitive sound - but this album is deeper than you remember. Seth and Marc look into the true meaning behind one of the 90's upbeat and infection jams; Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. Is it all as lush and catchy as it sounds or is there a terrible crystal meth addiction and some red panties hidden somewhere in there?
Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins talks about how Pandemic made them scrap an entire album and write a new one, 2021's Our Bande Apart. He also teases yet another album that may drop this year, and reflects on the band's enduring influence on a fanbase that somehow stays the same age as the years progress.

If you were alive in the late '90s, chances are there was an entire chapter of your life that was soundtracked by Eve 6's “Inside Out” — you know, that insanely catchy, angst-filled “heart in a blender” song that, starting in 1998, was ubiquitous on the radio and during Saturday trips to the mall. Nearly 25 years later, the Southern California alt-rock giants are back in the zeitgeist, though for decidedly un-nostalgic reasons: The band's Twitter went viral in late 2020 (possibly the only good thing to happen that year) when, seemingly out of nowhere, singer and guitarist Max Collins began using it to serve up unfiltered, hilarious cultural and political commentary.Subsequent offerings have ranged from cold-tweeting politicians to ask them if they “like the heart in a blender song,” to razzing other late-'90s rock stars (looking at you, Stephan Jenkins and Steve Albini), to thoughtful commentary on fair pay for musicians and roasting the centrist Dems. It's been an unlikely hit, and in addition to releasing new music with Eve 6, Max now pens an advice column with Input Mag and has become something of a rock n roll, post-Bernie public intellectual. We've been wanting to interview Max for a long time, but recently found the perfect excuse: Emilie and Max both wrote an article about John Hinckley Jr., the sexagenarian singer-songwriter who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s in a bid to impress the actor Jodie Foster. He wounded four people, including the President, and was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity. On July 15, Hinckley finally became a free man after over four decades of restrictions and court-mandated psychiatric care. Max, who is a big fan of Hinckley's music, got him on the phone for his first interview after his unconditional release. Around the same time, Emilie got commissioned to write an essay about the cult fandom around Hinckley and his stripped-down, romantic folk songs, which have garnered him nearly 30,000 subscribers on YouTube. She wanted to examine the fascination with Hinckley's music in the context of the complicated legacy of “outsider music,” a term popularized by WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid in the early 2000s to describe self-taught musicians with unusual backstories (and sometimes psychological disabilities) creating outside the bounds of the traditional music industry. Think: Daniel Johnston, The Shaggs, and Wesley Willis. It's basically the music equivalent of the (similarly othering) category of outsider art.But then a planned series of tour dates Hinckley booked this summer sparked a bunch of controversy online — especially after The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute issued a statement condemning his return to the stage. After the shows got canceled, the piece evolved into an exploration of how the long-running Brooklyn DIY venue Market Hotel, one of the stops on Hinckley's so-called “Redemption Tour,” became a target for the conservative media outrage machine, exemplifying the Right's increasing embrace of the very same cancel-culture tactics it loves to accuse the left of using. What does the controversy around Hinckley's foray into live music tell us about the state of the discourse? Is there such a thing as forgiveness, and redemption, in the middle of a culture war? And how in the world did Eve 6, a band we all grew up watching on MTV, end up reentering the chat as one of the funniest and most influential voices on left-wing Twitter? Much like in his column, Max is a generous and thoughtful conversationalist and was kind enough to indulge our extremely long list of questions. Along the way, he also got deep about some of his own experiences with mental health, including navigating a form of OCD, and why perhaps the appeal of so-called “outsider music” is that we all feel like outsiders in a way sometimes. WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley chats with Third Eye Blind, which rocks Merriweather Post Pavilion tonight in Columbia, Maryland. In 2019, Jason and his former WTOP colleague Chris Cichon spoke briefly with frontman Stephan Jenkins about the band's biggest hits from “Semi-Charmed Life” to “How's It Gonna Be." (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
25 Years ago on April 8th, the self-titled debut album from Third Eye Blind was released. The album was both a critical and commercial hit that still holds up after all these years! Over time, the only original members of the group are controversial lead singer/founding member Stephan Jenkins and drummer Brad Hargreaves. Last time I tackled their discography, a new album ("Our Bande Apart") came out a mere two weeks after that episode dropped. Since then, I vowed to rectify this situation and give all their albums another listen. Normally, I wouldn't bother going back and re-ranking. But I realized as I was listening to their discography... OPINIONS CAN CHANGE since last fall's episode. So with that said, here is the very first Re-Rank episode. This one is dedicated to Third Eye Blind. Topics discussed: High School angst, Billy Corgan, LGBTQ culture. In this Episode of Crue Cast, a podcast is all about the most infamous band in rock hist Motley Crue! Jason talks about the BS scene from the Hulu series Pam & Tommy in which Tommy Lee gets into a fight with Third Eye Blind. In the fifth episode of Pam & Tommy, the TV show dramatizing the release of the Pamela Anderson & Tommy Lee sex tape, an angry Tommy Lee storms into a recording studio that he thinks Mötley Crüe is still important enough to use and gets into an argument with the up-and-coming Third Eye Blind. While the scene itself works well as a shorthand for one omnipresent band being replaced by another as time passes by, Third Eye Blind frontman/alleged jerk Stephan Jenkins has been getting out there to set the record straight and assure everyone that his band, unlike others, has never been in a feud with Mötley Crüe. Jenkins spoke with Variety about the scene, saying that not only has he never worked in the same studio as Mötley Crüe but that he hadn't “even heard them” at the time the fictional run-in took place. “I actually saw Tommy Lee's penis before I ever heard their band,” he adds charmingly, before adding that he hadn't watched Baywatch either, so the Anderson/Lee sex tape was “my first introduction to them.” “And so we never kicked them out of the studio, but my drummer Brad said that what inspired him to play drums when he was a little kid was Mötley Crüe,” Jenkins says. “So there is a part of Third Eye Blind taking some kind of inspiration from Tommy Lee's drumming.” Variety did manage to track down the person responsible for the fictional encounter: Executive producer Rob Siegel. Apparently, Siegel “did a little quick Google search” to see which other bands were on Elektra along with Mötley Crüe in 1996. He discovered that “the timing was perfect” for a scene where Third Eye Blind is recording their first full-length album when an angry Lee busts into their studio. As for what Jenkins thinks of the show itself, he says he hasn't watched Pam & Tommy but that he “[hopes] whoever played me on TV was pretty.” In another interview from TMZ, he also says he'd like to be portrayed by Tom Hardy or Tilda Swinton in TV and movies going forward. Thank you for listening to Crue Cast!
Stephan Jenkins was cast into the spotlight when Third Eye Blind's 1997 self-titled debut album exploded around the world. On the back of hits like "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Jumper", the frontman achieved success beyond his wildest dreams – all the while learning the hard way about the compromises the music industry often demands of its artists. Fast forward to 2022 and Third Eye Blind have not only weathered the storms of those early years, but as Stephan explains in this interview, being in control of the band's decisions and trajectory is much easier. The five-piece will tour the US in June, commemorating the 25th anniversary of their debut, while also shining the light on their latest album, 2021's Our Bande Apart. We talk about it all in this interview, from Stephan's difficult upbringing to his devotion to music, from the success of the band's debut to current day.

It's a funny intro before the interview! Things went haywire in the house before Stephan arrived....had a plumbing situation...Stephan refers to the plumber as my roommate! Stephan reveals some if his favorite songs from 2021! It's a rainy day in LA this day and the guys talk about good manners and Stryker asks Stephan about his love for LA (he's a bay area guy) The guys talk about the new album called Our Bande Apart and the process of how it was recorded here in Los Angeles. Stephan and Stryker discuss the Third Eye Blind documentary which is available on youtube called "How We Hold Each Other Right Now". Stephan tells Stryker that his mindset has changed, he doesn't care about metrics, streams, radio play or Grammy's and as a result, he's made much more music! Stephan also shared that he had another full album ready just as the pandemic hit, but the songs didn't feel right to release which is what lead lead them to the very honest and imperfect album.. Our Bande Apart. Stephan explains what an imperfect album means. Stephan tells a beautiful story about knitting himself back together from the traumatized 6 year old boy that he was. Stephan brings up the saying....Comparison is the enemy of joy. The guys also discuss tension in the recording studio. Stephan tells Stryker that yes, absolutely that is important in the process. Stephan recounts a great story about producing Vanessa Carlton while Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were working in a different studio, Stephan walked right in and asked to borrow them for a song! Stephan says to Stryker that Third Eye Blind is an indie rock band who are saddled with a lot of hits, he also tells Stryker about his love for Rancid and The Interruptors. It was just a few years back that they all met at a show....The KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles. Stephan talks to Stryker about his love of playing drums from a very young age and being a professional musician by the time he was 17. Stryker learns that Stephan went to Cal Berkeley for college and actually had a great time! The guys then chat about getting a record deal, and why in the 90's it was so important to have a deal, that entire experience led to the writing and recording of the song "Graduate". Stephan reveals that after the chat he's going to rehearsal and the guys are already making a new Third Eye Blind album, Stephan is not even close to slowing down and living off previous success. Make sure to find the guys on the road, 2022 is going to be another huge year for the band! It was a super fun time hanging with Stephan, he's a very very talented guy, sit back relax, and enjoy another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker
Third Eye Blind is back with a new album! "Our Bande Apart" came out September 24th and features songs that remind singer Stephan Jenkins of The Cure, Judas Priest, and pure California surf rock. Listen to find out which song was inspired by his feeling that "we're so isolated but this isolation also compresses us deeper into each other."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins catches up with Kyle Meredith to dig into the band's new LP, Our Bande Apart, and it's accompanying documentary, which gives a fly-on-the-wall look at the recording sessions. The frontman discusses upsetting some fans with their progressive sound, scrapping an earlier album once the pandemic hit, and finding influence from The Cure and Bon Iver. Jenkins also talks about covering "Funeral Singers" after hearing Sylvan Esso's version, being inspired by the new LA singer-songwriter scene (Phoebe Bridgers), and naming Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker as his favorite artist at the moment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
B.C. is going back to High School this week! Figuratively speaking, of course. Bands from the 90s have come and gone. Very few are still active. A good chunk were absolutely polarizing. One of the most (if not THE most) polarizing would be San Francisco alternative band (and this week's spotlight) Third Eye Blind. As of 2021, frontman Stephan Jenkins and drummer Brad Hargreaves are the ONLY original members. And not without a lot of controversy ranging from legal battles with past bandmates, ego clashes, and what the band should sound like... All of which are STILL happening to this day! You could say it was far from a "Semi-Charmed Life" for all involved. :P Love them or hate them, Third Eye Blind was still successful in the Alternative Rock/Pop world and Jenkins is a damn good lyricist! But which 3eb album is the best? "How's It Going To Be" in the end? Not to sound like a "Crystal Baller", but I predict you'll be surprised where I rank their short, but solid discography. Tune in and see where your favorite album ranks! Vanessa Carlton speaks candidly about the seedy underbelly of the music industry, and why followups to “A Thousand Miles” were more successful than the men on her team wanted her to believe. She discusses how her latest album, Love Is An Art, is a new beginning for her and how eager she is to tour, once touring is something people are allowed to do again. With their 1997 self-titled debut, Third Eye Blind charted five hit singles, three that made the Billboard top ten, while moving six million units worldwide. Over a year after the release, they were still logging hit singles and touring, and as we've learned over many episodes, the follow-up doesn't always get the same attention to detail. With the 1999 sophomore album Blue, their limited studio time didn't stop the band from stretching musically, conducting some interesting sonic experiments to compliment Stephan Jenkins rapid fire sing/speak delivery. But 1999 looked very different from 1997 - radio changed, Napster would become a thing, pop music was dominant - was their even room for a jangly rock band anymore? Whether trying to keep up with the times or not, they delivery the most pop-friendly single of their career in "Never Let You Go." EITM interviews Stephan Jenkins
Brian and Bill welcome music biz insider Mike Prince (he works in licensing music for Disney) to discuss Third Eye Blind's self titled debut (1997, Elektra). Masterminded by singer/lyricist Stephan Jenkins, 3EB took off with massive success filed by their infections pop hooks and catchy melodies. Benefiting from a great chemistry with guitarist and co-songwriter Kevin Cadogan, Jenkins famously ousted Cadogan from the band, leading them into a creative and commercial lull. Strangely, the band has lived on, outliving their 90s rock brethren and remaining a vital influence through till today. Mike talks about purchasing CD singles of the band's early hits before finally discovering the album as an art form while listening to a friend's copy on vacation in Las Vegas. Bill, Brian, and Mike discuss how a younger generation is spreading the word about this album, Kevin Cadogan's role in the band and the business dealings that leads to his dismissal, Arion Salazar's cool bass grooves, Brad Hargreaves' pay day, the non-pop oriented tracks on the album, what the heck harmonics are, the influence of Oasis and MTV's the Real World, where the album dips into a "winter" vibe, how the last 3 songs solidify the band's legacy, and more as we make our way through the album track by track!
@StephanJenkins calls the show to discuss @ThirdEyeBlind's new music #CopVPhoneGirl, how he trolled some #republicans at a charity show in #Cleveland, and the magical experience a #quadriplegic fan had at #lollapalooza. #utah #morning #radio #altlakecity
On EP 24 Paco and George talk with filmmaker Marjorie Sturm about her documentary The Cult of JT LeRoy. We talk about JT Leroy's first two novels Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and we get into hero worship, cons, Rachel Dolezal, improvisation, filmmaking and much more. Authorized and unauthorized, The Cult of JT Leroy received two Jury Awards for Best Feature Documentary (SF IndieFest and Oslo/Fusion International) in 2015 and played at top-tier festivals around the world. Ethically charged, controversial, and confusing, JT’s life and death sprang open a Pandora’s box of powerful questions about literature and culture, identity and celebrity, and the reality of the society we live in. Fraud? Art? Sociopathy? Complicity? The Cult of JT Leroy is a testament to this bizarre and elaborate story that has captured the attention of the world’s media and perplexes to this day.Jeremiah "Terminator" LeRoy was a literary persona created in 1994 by American writer Laura Albert. LeRoy was supposedly born October 31, 1980 in West Virginia. His backstory was one of prostitution, drug addiction, and vagrancy in California. After his first novel Sarah was published, "LeRoy" started making public appearances. A January 2006 article in The New York Times declared that the person acting as LeRoy in public was Albert's sister-in-law, Savannah Knoop. Knoop wrote her own memoir of the experience called Girl Boy Girl. An Albert-endorsed documentary by Jeff Feuerzeig, Author: The JT LeRoy Story, premiered at Sundance 2016.Marjorie Sturm is an award-winning filmmaker whose films span a broad perspective: narrative, documentary, and experimental.
