Today on Art of the Cut, we speak with writer/director/editor Brett Morgen about his film “Moonage Daydream” about the iconic artist, David Bowie. This is no simple biopic. It's a rich, philosophical montage connecting Bowie's life and work with the culture that he is both affected by and speaking into. This interview came from numerous requests from Art of the Cut fans who loved the masterful editing of this film. Brett Morgen is known for directing biographical documentaries like Jane - about the extraordinary life of Jane Goodall, Cobain: Montage of Heck, about the life of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain, and The Kid Stays in the Picture, about the legendary Paramount producer, Robert Evans. Morgen has also directed the pilot of the series When the Lights Go On, and episodes of 30 for 30 and Runaways among other feature film and TV projects.

This week we get all grungy as we wade in to the murky depths of Cobain: Montage of Heck, a documentary focusing on Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain using many audio and video home recordings to create a very intimate and sometimes disturbing portrait of his life.

Pop Screen makes another foray into the documentary realm this week, with Aidan rejoining regular host Graham to look at Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck. An ambitious film rooted as much in its subject's imagination as it is the facts of his life, it was highly acclaimed as a portrait of the late Kurt Cobain, even as its strict factual accuracy was debated. As well as Morgen's film, we'll also be discussing Nirvana's legacy across the decades, and how Cobain and the wider grunge scene reacted to his sudden megastardom. Den österrikiske regissören Ulrich Seidl är på Sverigebesök med sin bioaktuella dokumentär Källaren - en plats där allt kan hända. En kvinna har sina naturalistiska babydockor gömda i kartonger, grårosa jättedockor som hon varsamt plockar fram och vårdar som om det vore verkliga barn. En man har källaren full av nazi-rekvisita där stoltheten i samlingen är ett oljeporträtt av Hitler som han fick i bröllopspresent. For this week's episode, we're featuring filmmaker Brett Morgen, whose new documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck begins its limited theatrical release this weekend. Morgen's HBO Documentary feature is the first documentary to be made about the late Nirvana singer and guitarist with the cooperation of his family. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, approached Morgen about the idea of taking on the projects back in 2007. With that blessing, Morgen and his team were given unprecedented access to Cobain's personal and family archives. The powerful film includes footage of various Nirvana performances and unheard songs as well as previously unreleased home movies, recordings, artwork photography and more. Additionally, the film includes interviews with Kurt Cobain's mother, Wendy, and father, Donald Cobain, as well as with Courtney Love. Kurt and Courtney's only daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, served as a co-executive producer of the film. After its debut at Sundance in January, the film screened at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival in February. HBO will begin airing the feature May 4th. Morgen and the film's editor Joe Beshenkovsky joined the Film Society's Eugene Hernandez on stage at the Walter Reade Theater this past Monday night, following the screening of the film, for an extensive conversation about Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, digging through Kurt Cobain's art, writing and music (the film contains previously unreleased music) and working with Courtney Love and Frances Cobain. David Fear of Rolling Stone described the film as "the unfiltered Kurt experience," noting that Cobain is shown "not as a spokesperson of a generation," but as a "human being, husband and father."
