PROG ROCK GROUP ‘NINE STONES CLOSE' RELEASING NEW ALBUM ‘ADVENTURES IN ANHEDONIA' EXCLUSIVE ZOOM SPECIAL EVENT WITH BAND LEADER ADRIAN JONES LIVE FROM SWITZERLAND ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS WITH RAY SHASHO Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. International Progressive Rock band Nine Stones Close, with members from the UK, Ireland, Switzerland and the Netherlands, will release their second album of the year, “Adventures in Anhedonia,” on November 07, 2024, via  FREIA Music. This new release follows “Diurnal,” which garnered critical acclaim upon its release in June. “Adventures in Anhedonia” is a deeply personal album, lyrically reflecting on the mental health and well-being of individuals, based on the personal experiences and traumas of guitarist Adrian Jones. Adrian shares: “It really reflects what's been happening to me over the past years, the effect it's had on me, and how I have tried to deal with some of it.” Musically, the album takes a distinct direction from “Diurnal,” capturing the emotional weight of the lyrical themes while still maintaining the signature Nine Stones Close sound. The band has also revealed the album's cover artwork, another stunning piece by long-time visual collaborator  Antonios Seijas. Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Willa Rudolph. Willa is a music publicist, visual artist, and the singer / songwriter of the Grunge Rock band November Girl. In this episode, we chat about growing up in New York and Los Angeles, and being around a family of musicians. Then we turn to what led to Willa becoming a publicist, and then making the switch to become a music publicist in particular. We discuss how she gained the confidence to front a band, and the hilarious way she found the other members of November Girl, We chat about the New York music scene and I find out what the hell "Shoe Gaze" music is. Naturally we talk about The Great American Mud Wrestling Show, and what that is, and whether or not we are still in a singles world; where bands don't feel the need to release albums. Of course Willa and I talk about November Girl's new EP called Heart Prayer, and she lets me play one of the tracks from it.

It's time for another interview series! I've been a student of Meghan's through her insightful TikTok, and I knew that I had to talk to her about being in the epicenter of what became known as 'grunge' in Seattle in the late 80s/90s. We had a time and covered so much ground. Some of the points we chat about include: indie record culture, the death of paper concert tickets, working the famous Nirvana in-store show, and moving to Palm Springs, CA and opening a vintage store. I found out what it's really like to go viral online, views on fashion TikTok and IG, sustainability in fashion, and cap it off with a Henry Rollins anecdote. Enjoy!

If there's one lesson songwriters learn over and over again, it's that sometimes you just gotta let go. Sometimes you just gotta let the song work its way out on its own schedule. Just let it go. That's the trick my next guest leaned on for his band's latest single. Peter Argyropolous, lead singer and songwriter for LA-based rockers Sons of Silver, joins me to discuss Tell Me This, a classic, 70s-esque punk rocker released in early 2024. In addition to being a great friend of the show, Peter is also a fantastic interview. Coming off the heels of Sons of Silver's blistering 2022 EP Ordinary Sex Appeal, Peter opens up about the difficulties he had in finishing the song, especially its off-kilter lyrics. Peter also goes into detail about the band's struggles in dealing with new personnel and refurbishing their sound. We cover a bit of everything here—songwriting, guitar tech, and gearing up (hopefully) for a year of touring. So dig in and welcome one of my favorite recurring guests Peter Argyropolous back to For Songs.

We talk about Portland, including our memorable brunch with Carrie, fantastic dinner with Corin, indie rock tour with Corin's husband Lance Bangs and the current state of the food scene in the country's hippest city. Vanessa also bonds with Carrie over their shared love of "basic" fashions, we discuss record collecting on tour and why ordering clothes online is often disappointing. Finally we dig deep into the iconic '80s Juicy Fruit gum commercials which combined a catchy song, extreme sports and Olympic level athleticism into a deep desire to have some artificially flavored pineapple (or mango?) gum. Finally, we convince Carrie and Corin to play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate changing the name of cheesecake to cheese pie, making Harrison Ford the face of Hanukkah and if the legendary American Football house should have its emo legacy updated to include the time that Sleater-Kinney potentially played a half-pipe there a long time ago. These amazing women will rock your socks off, among other things!!  Next up is one of my favorite people on the planet, the artist/musician/activist/mental health advocate, Cameron Lavi-Jones of the kick-ass rockband, King Youngblood. Cameron will literally and figuratively rock your world as he talks to me about the myriad causes he passionately and actively supports. He is a total gem of a human!Destroy Boys is in the 3-slot as I sat down with these thoughtful, energetic and surprisingly reflective punk rockers to discuss their roots in the Bay Area punk scene. As we gather outside the KEXP studios, they explain to me the nature and essence of the energy and purpose they bring to their fans around the globe.Last up are twins Cedric and Eva Walker, The Black Tones, who talk to me about their Seattle roots mixed with a New Orleans heritage, and how Rice Krispie treats can be so amazing.  This charming duo gives a new meaning to the love of family while bringing a unique energy and warmth to all their music and beyond.    For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

In 1992 Grunge was the only genre of music on the radio and in college dorms around the US.  Alice in Chains were riding high (literally) on the success of their first album Facelift and hit single Man in a Box. After a successful opening stint with Van Halen and a best selling EP, Sap, Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley, Mike Starr and Sean Kinney were ready to rise to the top of the grunge/metal scene. But drugs, particularly heroin, were having a detrimental effect on the band which produced an album full of darkness, self-hatred and sickness.  With titles like Sickman, Junkman, Down in a Hole, Hate to Feel, and Godsmack it's obvious Layne Staley is in pain but he delivers some extraordinary performances throughout the record.Selling over 6 million copies with over 6 million singles as well, Alice in Chains couldn't really capitalize on all that success as they couldn't afford to take Layne Staley out on the road for fear of him being arrested or ODing.  Still, with hits like Would?, Them Bones, Angry Chair & Rooster, this record will always be remembered, though it should be seen as a cautionary tale.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteYouTubeTwitterInstagramLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.comCheck out our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use code podcast to save 10% off all orders!Want to win front row seats to Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the US?Enter here to win tickets and a chance to be on a Pantheon Podcast: https://pantheonpodcasts.com/nickmasonGet tickets here: https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/

SUMMARY:Our guest is Jerry Cantrell, the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of Alice in Chains. The nine-time Grammy nominee has written more than 20 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and was named one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” by Guitar World magazine. His latest solo release is the critically-acclaimed Brighten.  PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about their high school years, the Seattle explosion, Chuck Klosterman's new book, and why certain bands from the much-hyped grunge movement evolved and survived when others burned out.  PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with Jerry CantrellABOUT JERRY CANTRELL:Nine-time Grammy nominee Jerry Cantrell is best known as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of the hard rock band Alice in Chains. Signing with Columbia Records in 1989, the Seattle-based band got lumped into the grunge explosion of the early 1990s when Cantrell-penned classics such as “Man in the Box,” ”Would?,” “Rooster,” and “Down in a Hole,” took over MTV and Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. But Alice in Chains was always about more than Seattle hysteria. By the middle of the decade they'd released three multiplatinum selling studio albums—Facelift, Dirt, and the self-titled Alice in Chains—as well as three EPs, including Jar of Flies, which went triple platinum and became the first EP in history to top the Billboard 200. A string of Top 10 singles, including “No Excuses,” “I Stay Away,” “Grind,” “Heaven Beside You,” and “Again” established the band as rock radio mainstays. Plagued by struggles with addiction, Alice in Chains took a hiatus from live performances before regrouping in the spring of 1996 for an appearance on MTV Unplugged. The subsequent album hit the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum. That same year the band found themselves on another extended hiatus, leading to the release of Cantrell's debut solo album, Boggy Depot, in 1998. The death of Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley in 2002 could have meant the end of the band, but they eventually regrouped and released the Gold-selling Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009, and the follow-up album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. Both releases hit the Top 5. Alice in Chains has continued to release new music as recently as 2018's Rainier Fog album, and the band has now sold more than 30 million records worldwide. In addition to his first solo release, Cantrell put out the album Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 in 2002. His most recent release, the critically-acclaimed Brighten, is his first solo record in almost two decades. Named among Guitar World magazine's “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Jerry is also a formidable songwriter. More than 20 of his compositions, both with Alice in Chains and as a solo artist, have hit the Top 10 on the Billboard rock chart.

Their upcoming LP, Traumantic (recorded and produced by The Replacements' Tommy Stinson), boasts raw, emotive lyrics, poppy grunge hooks and slide guitar collaboration from the ever so talented Josh Marre (Blue Ranger, Pinegrove). Barker says the album is about “the sum of my life's experiences with men, abusive power dynamics in relationships, therapy, and how I relate to people from those experiences. It's time for another installment of “This Ain’t No Disco” on Growin’ Up Rock. In an episode from the Growin' Up Rock Vaults. (yes we recorded this one last year - see if you can tell) This ain't no disco, but it sure as hell is rock n roll at its finest. On this episode we jump in our “Back To The Future” time traveling Delorean and go back to 1990, and what another kick ass year it was for hard rock and metal releases. It was getting close to the end for the hard rock / glam rock pretty boy music scene, that we came to know and love and getting close to the dawning of what would come to be known as the Grunge Rock era. We love the opportunity to focus on a year, and play whatever we feel like playing at the time we jump on our mics.We share a few laughs, talk about the changing tides in music and pick out a handful of great music to turn it up and take you back to 1990. Its dirty country and you can feel the grit through the speakers. Across the Board, Canadian eclectic rock/pop/folk group, join OTP Sessions in studio. Jackie and Andy talk about the creation of the group and their unique way of using social media to increase their fanbase in unique and "path less traveled" ways. They cook, they play, they argue. Its a couples retreat with a musical twist. Crazy Stories talks Aerosmith and meth head butts on police officers. "In My Life," a reading of Barry's journals from grade 12 debuts, and things get all 1985. YIKES. A Pause for Thought talks knowledge.

For those who prefer not to travel far for their onstage entertainment, and like to avoid any excursions into foreign territory, there are, fortunately, a tremendous number of nearby theater companies. But for those who like experiencing the new and exotic, and don’t mind working a bit to get there, may I suggest a trip to San Francisco, and Faultline Theater Company’s impressively performed light-and-dark comedy "Shiner," by rising playwright Christian Durso. The play runs through July 26 at the Tenderloin’s very-cool Pianofight venue, where up to five or six different plays, concerts, or comedy shows might take place on a single evening in one of the venue’s two theater spaces. Might I suggest a pre-show brew in the lobby, which is actually more like a laidback bar-bistro with a small stage of its own. Don’t worry about missing the play. Each performance is announced five minutes before curtain, summoning theatergoers from their drinks and snack to whichever theater-space their particular show is running in, like an airport announcement that your flight is now boarding. And speaking of flying, the two-person cast of "Shiner," Monica Ho and Adam Magill, manage a rather remarkable feat of high-wire actorly daring-do, playing thirteen-year-olds despite being obviously at least ten years older than that. They pull it off, spectacularly at times, capturing in their bodies and faces the doubt-ridden, hormonally amped, molten and morphing psyches of their young, intense, categorically at-risk characters. Set in Los Angeles in 1994, when the Grunge Rock movement was stirring up the youth of America, Kurt Cobain was still alive, and Nirvana ruled the hearts and minds of a generation of disaffected young people. In "Shiner," that generation is represented by Margot, the possibly ADD-affected founder of an afterschool club she’s named the Grunge Rock Underground National Great Escape, which of course spells GRUNGE. To the club of one - evidently no one at school wants to associate much with the hyper-intense Margot - comes the lonely Jake, who knows nothing about Grunge rock, but likes the idea of joining a club, assuming the members - in this case . . . Margot - will have him. What follows is a remarkable journey that begins with friendship - a friendship built around a mutual sense of isolation and family dysfunction - and quickly moves into something like love, before turning dark and unsettling, sometimes uncomfortably so. The early scenes in this 80-minute one-act, with the live band Lyon Grove on stage to contribute an appropriate underscore, are full of fun and angsty youthful energy, as our tragically but adorably earnest twosome shout out a spontaneous list of everything that sucks, or co-write a letter to Kurt Cobain informing him of their plan to score tickets to see Nirvana, then jump off the freeway overpass and thus dies happy. As few don’t know, the dark side of the grunge movement, as exemplified by Cobain’s overdose and death, is not all lighters and fist-pumping, and playwright Durso is to be commended to for not ignoring that fact in his emotionally complex play. The disturbingness of Jake and Margot’s plan notwithstanding, when their home lives push them to even more extreme outsider behavior, even then going out it in ways that reveal their youth and innocence, those episodes pack a serious wallop. The play’s ambiguous ending retains its original manic-depressive sense of simultaneous joy and pain, and will probably give you lots to talk about on your drive home from the City. "Shiner" runs through July 26 at Pianofight. www.pianofight.com I’m David Templeton, Second Row Center, for KRCB.
