It is with great intention that the second episode of this year is with today's guest Dr. Anita Johnston. As I shared with you in the last episode me and my body, this is my story. I found healing from disordered eating when I allowed a dialogue between my body and me and when I gave her a voice. The power within emotions and feelings became the sweetest song and strongest dance I could ever share. This is my creator force and feminine spirit, wanting to be awakened and expressed. And along my healing journey the work and book from Dr. Anita Johnston was such a fundamental and important part and it means the world to me to share her work with you today! … and by doing this curving the path and direction of this podcast a bit deeper - may this podcast be a source of inspiration for all of us to be awakened to the miraculous body we are and inhabit and may it be a platform for women who are going a similar path like I did to find inspiration and support to heal from disordered eating and awaken to their feminine spirit. Let me introduce my guest, Dr. Anita Johnston: Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon, which has been published in seven languages. She is the co-creator of the Light of the Moon Café, an online resource with interactive and self-study courses for women around the world. A pioneer in the field of eating psychology for over thirty-five years, she is currently the Founder and Executive Clinical Director of Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorder Programs, which has a residential eating disorder treatment program on Maui. Dr. Johnston provides virtual individual consultations and conducts workshops internationally. She is best known for integrating metaphor and storytelling into her training as a clinical psychologist to explain the complex issues that underlie struggles with eating and body image. In the conversation with Anita we talked about … What led Anita to become an expert and pioneer in the field of eating disorder recovery The feminine archetype and why eating disorder recovery invites us to find a balance between the feminine and masculine Why the moments we experience eating disorder behaviour are windows of opportunity to heal and meet yourself! How to «crack the hunger code» and why the foods we struggle with the most are the keys to deepest understanding of yourself The healing power of giving a voice to hidden feelings and emotions How to take first or further steps on your recovery in order to live a life beyond your wildest dreams and shine your gift into the world! I hope you enjoyed this episode and that you gained a lot of new insights and inspirations and feel encouraged and motivated from anew to explore how you eat and why you are doing what you are doing with food. Please leave a comment, a review and share it with your friends and family - it is the dialogue with you, dear listeners which hugely supports my work and keeps this podcast going, so thank you thank you thank you for all your support. We all know the voice of the “inner critic” where nothing is ever good enough and you’re on high alert about… well, most everything. The job of the critic voice (which is not YOU) is to keep you worried and afraid. Anita Johnston thinks worrying is a good use of imagination because it brings transformational change. A pioneer of the use of metaphor in helping people heal, Anita discusses how you can acknowledge your inner critic “voice” without giving her front stage permission to rule your life and all the choices you make around food, exercise, and body. Anita shares an activity from her Light of the Moon Cafe course on “creating the inner mother.” Tune in to practice this activity yourself and get several of her metaphorical lessons that have helped me over the years and embrace them as part of your Body Kindness transformation, including my all-time favorite “The Log”. Plus, you’ll get a story about my surprise dinner with Anita way back in the day when I was just coming out of dieting and how watching her eat a steak really helped me. --- Get to know Anita Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a Depth Psychologist, storyteller, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor, and Storytelling, which has been published in six languages along with numerous book chapters and articles in professional journals. Do you consider food to be your enemy or a waste of time? Are you tired of struggling with body image, yo-yo dieting, and food hate? Do you desperately want to embrace intuitive eating, but are too afraid of leaving behind the safety of an eating disorder? Listen now for a breakdown of how to confront these common food peace dilemmas. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. Episode's Key Points: Anita Johnson joins to talk recovery! We live in a world of PARADOX... it's about food, but it's also not about food at the same time!! So how are our food issues not about food? This struggle is a messenger to let us know that there are other issues going on in our lives... what other hungers are we starving for?? What is the symbolic nature of our food struggle? If we struggle with food restriction, it's important to look at other areas in our lives where we are restricting. If we struggle with binge eating, it's important to ask where else we feel scarcity in our lives. How do we create a peace-keeping force in our lives? We explore compassionate curiosity, rather than judgment. The foundation to food peace is compassionate curiosity!! How do we discern our symbolic hungers?? First we need to change our patterns in our lives... then we can tackle the patterns in our relationship with food. So how do we crack the code on our food behaviors?? Sugary foods usually indicate that we are needing sweetness in our lives, either from ourselves or others. Salty and crunchy foods generally indicate repressed anger and frustration. Warm foods mean we are yearning for emotional warmth. Spicy foods are often connected to a desire or fear of excited, stimulation, or change. Chocolate is all about sex, romance, and sexuality. So what next? After we explore our metaphorical relationship with food, how do we reconcile that information with our everyday lives? We're the experts of our bodies!! We're the only ones that really can understand what the food metaphors mean. Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter.
