What comes to mind when you hear the word "catalyst"? A short cut? A dynamic experience? A transformative idea? The ancient roots of this word comes from a verb that means to unloose, to set free. Think of a horse hemmed in a barn stall. A catalyst would be an open door. This week, both of our guests today had dreams involving football. Both, however, had other gifts and talents they would see come to the fore, and realized that the disappointing situations and tough choices that happened to them while on the way to their dreams were catalysts for broader horizons with bigger pastures. Dr. Myron Rolle is a neurosurgeon who has traveled the world; making it a better place using primarily his gifts, as he puts it, "from the neck up." By choosing a path toward medicine, Myron's football dreams were cut short, but was able to see the wisdom in having his dream diverted. Inquiros "Inky" Johnson nearly died while playing football, but the spiritual mentoring he received during his years at the University of Tennessee set him on course to be a motivational speaker who uses his platform to travel the world and make it a better place, too. But he's more proud and more pressed to see all of his players' names written in the Lamb's Book of Life and joining him in heaven one day." - Dr. Myron Rolle "I knew that football had an expiration date. If I had my way, I would not have had it as early. But again, it worked out how it did. And it is a blessing to be able to be in this field now, waking up every day, doing surgery, helping patients in the hospital, teaching young medical students." - Dr. Myron Rolle “My junior year, the second game, 2006, September 9th, I went to make a routine tackle. It ended my career, and it changed my life forever. I thought I was in a bad dream. Are you facing a crossroads in your life where your next move involves taking a step that feels unfamiliar or hard? None of us really knows what the next minute, days, or weeks might bring, but God does. And when we trust that He is in charge of our future, taking those leaps of faith leads us ever closer to where we're living in the fullness of who we're meant to be. Emily Chang is the CEO of the McCann World Group advertising company. As a successful executive who has headed up initiatives at Starbucks and Apple, it would seem Emily's legacy might be secured—but her corporate achievements simply were the springboard for the legacy she really wishes to establish—which is to personally make a difference for good in people's lives by opening up her home to youth in need. Jodi Stuber grew up with a love of horses, always dreaming of having one of her own. When Jodi found out about equine therapy, she knew this great love of horses was just a stepping off point to her true calling of serving people—including children and veterans—by connecting them to animals at the Hopewell Ranch, which she co-founded in 2004. Dr. Myron Rolle visits Google to discuss his book "The 2% Way: How a Philosophy of Small Improvements Took Me to Oxford, the NFL, and Neurosurgery". This book tells the story of his incredible journey, revealing how a strong work ethic, deep faith, and the family values instilled by his Bahamian immigrant parents set the stage for the transformative life philosophy that enabled him to overcome adversity, defy expectations, and create a life of meaning and purpose. Not long ago, Myron L. Rolle was a college football player recruited by the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League. He faced a kind of hyper-successful future that most children only dream about—especially a kid who had to fight stereotypes at every turn. But he had different dreams. He had trained his whole life to win big in both football and medicine. The sports world had difficulty understanding his intellect and the medical world had difficulty grasping his passion for neurosurgery and football. Both require a kind of diligence that borders on fanaticism. Now, as a Harvard neurosurgeon, Dr. Rolle is on the frontlines facing off against his latest opponent, COVID-19. We are clearly not going to eradicate the virus overnight, but if we use THE 2% WAY, we are certain to overcome this powerful adversary. Visit http://g.co/TalksAtGoogle/2PercentWay to watch the video.
I love Myron Rolle's story, and I'm so excited for you to hear it this week. Sports fans will remember him as a college football star at Florida State and for his time playing in the NFL. But while he was excelling on the football field, he was also cultivating an eventual career as a neurosurgeon. After being recruited out of high school by just about ever major college football program in the country, Rolle attended Florida State where he became a First Team Freshman All-American, the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year, and eventually a Third Team All-American. He ultimate chose Florida State because it was the place that best fit his plan to not only play football, but also become a Rhodes Scholar and study neuroscience. He was projected to be a first round draft pick after his college career was over, but that same year he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and the chance to study at Oxford for a year. He faced a decision — take about $9 million in a signing bonus as a first round pick and start his NFL career, or take a year away from football to follow his heart and study at Oxford on the Rhodes Scholarship. In this conversation, he discusses how he navigated that season of life and how he ultimately decided what to do. This decision, like everything else in his life, was guided by his faith in Jesus. He also details this story in his new book, The 2% Way: How a Philosophy of Small Improvements Took Me to Oxford, the NFL, and Neurosurgery. "The 2% Way" was a mantra he learned from a college coach, and he talks about how these small improvements can lead to big things. If you've ever struggled with comparison, imposter syndrome, or just a general feeling that you're moving too slow toward your goals, this conversation is for you. A Rhodes Scholar, a father, a husband, a doctor, an athlete and now author…Myron Rolle joins The Pivot to talk about his book The 2% Way and his philosophy of how small improvements took him from Oxford to the NFL to Neurosurgery. Ahead of the book's release- Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with Myron and pick his brain on his unprecedented journey. The guys talk about how rare it is to be successful at two demanding, high profile professions in medicine and professional sports, which also seem complete opposites- one is a sport for entertainment and the other is life and death. Although from the outside it seems very different, Myron explains how similar the two careers really are in philosophy, approach and mindset. Balancing both athletics and academics allowed for a seamless transition from one career to the other and is something he shares with young mentees today . Ryan had the chance to play with Myron in the league and embraced the opportunity of soaking up some of the knowledge he shared along the way as well as the immense respect for his medical work and sacrifice during the pandemic. Referring to him as the smartest player to ever play in the NFL, Channing asks Myron how he could know so much about the brain and consequences of playing football yet still desire to play such a tough sport which opens up the conversation on CTE and the work Myron has done through research and partnering with the NFL. Fred acknowledges the positives and a lot of the success stories surgeons have but the guys get into a tougher conversation on how some of the losses are handled and the pressures of working at highly touted hospitals and institutes such as Mass General and Harvard. Closing out the conversation, Ryan turns it over to Myron to share his message to young people and how it's never too late to choose a different path in life and the value of hard work. He also promoted unproven hydroxycholoroquine as a treatment for Covid-19 despite the FDA, Dr. Fauci and other doctors saying it’s not an effective treatment. Republican Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has been leading his state through the pandemic and has clashed with the President about testing. He joins AC360 to react to Trump’s recent messaging and gives an update on Maryland’s testing situation. Plus, 21 NFL players have tested positive for coronavirus since reporting to training camps and many players have already opted out of the season because of health concerns.
