I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People. In the hustle of becoming an emerging leader, sometimes we can lose sight of ourselves, build personal walls, place very high and often unrealistic expectations on ourselves. The thing is, somewhere along the way, we'll make a mistake, we'll stumble and fall, sometimes spectacularly, and this happens to you, you'll have this podcast episode to help pick you up, reminding you that you ARE amazing, that you EARNED the right to be in this role, that you DESERVE to be the leader. To do this, you'll hear from Nancy Shadlock, a fellow Canadian, Mom, and Certified Life Coach where we'll hear inspirational stories and facts that will remind us that struggles are natural and part of life, but we can learn from them and make us stronger, helping us grow, and be lifelong reminders that we are ALL AMAZING!Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021. The Balut Kiki Project: Uniquely Pinoy. Unapologetically Queer.
Do you need to divorce your sexuality to embrace your spirituality? The universality of the adage that sexuality and spirituality are two poles on a spectrum that never meet is even more true if you are queer. Many times, you are told that your orientation is not welcome at church, or that you are not queer enough to be part of your own community because you are 'religious'. It is frustrating and hurtful as a queer person to be seen and treated based solely on one's sexuality, while society chooses to ignore other facets of your humanity. When it doesn't matter if you are the diligent breadwinner of your family, a loving son or daughter, a doting parent, a caring sibling, a dependable friend, a law-abiding citizen – and all that matters is that you love somebody they deem not suitable for you based on their personal interpretation of a book that has suffered innumerable translations for two millennia – you start to wonder if the concept of “god” is what they say it is. As part of our Usapang+Sex Series, the Project speaks to Nancy Shadlock on how she has somehow managed to come to terms with both aspects of her persona to live a life with a semblance of peace. Nancy is a former pastor with a Master's degree in Spiritual Formation, and perhaps more importantly, a proud queer woman, married with two kids. Bessie, if it's worth anything, we want to remind you that you are beautiful and amazing, and that there is an intrinsic goodness that comes from within you no matter how people have treated you. And never let anybody tell you otherwise. Listen to Nancy on the Coming Our Chronicles Podcast here. Neuro*Queering: Beyond the intersection of Neurodiversity and Queerness
Nancy Shadlock is a coming out coach and the host of The Coming Out Chronicles podcast. Interestingly, her work life began as a youth pastor and spiritual director. From her conservative Christian upbringing with missionary parents to coming out at 33, Nancy shares her unique path to finding her truth in the LGBTQ+ community. She has been an important part of my own coming out story, so I can speak to Nancy's abilities to hold sacred space for our secrets and deepest knowings. My favorite take away from working with her is the need to come out by coming in, coming in to our truest selves. In this episode, we share stories of how we lost people upon coming out and how the reactions of friends and family have changed over time. Nancy believes it is important to remember that no story is final and that we need to hold patient space for growth in others and ourselves. She holds this space beautifully and with such a calm and grounding presence. Her current group offering, the Flame Tree Collective, combines coaching with human design and archetypes so people can explore beyond coming out and realize what vocation is the best and most natural fit for them. Please consider sharing this episode with a friend and if it feels aligned, please subscribe and review. Nancy takes us through the process of her spiritual transformation over the past decade. She's moved from being quite a conservative Christian to not being limited by the boxes of any particular spiritual dogma. She has come to realize that whatever path is leading you deeper into love and connection is truly a beautiful spiritual path. Nancy talks about how learning from others who do not have the same beliefs broadens your spirituality, as well as how vibrant spirituality evolves with us rather than staying stagnant. 2:00: Boarding School4:16: Receiving who I am6:02: Spiritual Direction10:50: A new embodiment of spirituality22:50: Many Paths26:46: Anticipation of breakthrough Facebook: (Centered Life Coaching)Instagram: (Nancy Shadlock)Website: www.centered.caSign up for the Front Porch here Would you like to donate coming out support for a deserving person? Nancy offers some ideas of how that divide could be bridged, so that all life could be celebrated and a flourishing world created.01:10: Spiritual Abuse0:3:08 : Doubling down in the wrong direction for marriage equality.09:26: Having to divorce spirituality from sexuality10:23: Working with organizations 16:56: The Thoughtful Queer Circle19:23: Everyone has giftsFacebook: (Centered Life Coaching)Instagram: (Nancy Shadlock)Website: www.centered.caSign up for the Front Porch: www.centered.ca/workwithme Would you like to donate coming out support for a deserving person? Nancy Shadlock is a 'coming out Coach' helping people, whatever their story, to come out of whatever closet they are trapped inside. Nancy says that we each have our own personal narrative and sometimes the stories we tell ourselves can leave us locked inside a place that isn't even true for us anymore. In this episode, Nancy shares some of her story with Lucy, showing that finding shared ground, commonality and connection is so often the way to our truth and liberation. About Lucy: I am not only thoroughly and extensively trained in Transactional Analysis for Psychotherapy AND organisations, I have over 20 years of experience in helping people be all they can be. I have been a senior leader in social care and Social Work since the 90s, I have a level 7 Advanced Professional Diploma in Business Leadership, a Master's degree in Social Work and a Postgraduate certificate in Personal and Business Coaching. I am a strong, potent, qualified and professionally credentialled Personal and Business Coach with the skills and experience to get you exactly where you want to be. I started out by helping the most marginalised people in our society as a Social Worker back in the 1990s. I soon moved into senior management in Social Services and later in the Care Sector. I have worked as a Director of People and Culture, a Managing Director and as a Group Learning and Development Manager until I left to set up my own Coaching business in early 2019. In 2014, I began training in and practicing Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and in 2016 I qualified as a Coach. I train others in both of these practices now and I am known as a leading authority in my own unique and perfectly integrated methods across the sector. I love my work. And I love watching success emerge within and from my clients It is totally aligned with my purpose which is to impact YOU so that you become all you truly are. Throughout her interviewing of so many amazing people on the Coming Out Chronicles, Nancy is often asked to share some of her own thoughts and musings on life and what's currently been on her mind. This week, she does just that with a faithful listener and fellow female entrepreneur Ann Zee, who curiously digs into what's been going on in Nancy's life and the many changes that have taken place over the last few years. They cover the importance of authenticity, reflect on the podcast thus far, and discuss current and future goals. 02:20: Intro to Ann07:22: Authenticity & tree planting23:00: Sharing pregnancy27:00: Imposter syndrome42:20 Impact of COVIDFacebook: (Centered Life Coaching)Instagram: (Nancy Shadlock)Website: www.centered.caWould you like to donate coming out support for a deserving person? In today's episode ‘Gospel gaslighting' I share where some of my emotional arrested development started. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or a group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group, making them question their own memory, perception, or judgment, often evoking in them cognitive dissonance and other changes, including low self-esteem. In short, gaslighting is another's attempt to question your ‘Knowing' or to question your ‘Truth'. The antidote to gaslighting is vulnerability and intimacy. It's taking off the armor. It's going off script and having a heart-to-heart conversation. It's radical transparency, it's mucky, it's messy and it's emotional… because… guess what… we are emotional beings! Instead of teaching ourselves how to reign in our emotions, suppress our feelings, labeling our feelings as good vs. bad we have the opportunity to honour ourselves and each other by bringing our full and wonderfully messy selves into each and every situation. And just to be clear, I'm not saying “bring ALL of your emotions ALL of the time into EVERY situation”, we need to balance this with emotional intelligence and gauge how can I appropriately show my emotions and be human right now. Being told that my inner knowing, my being, my sexuality, my orientation, whatever you want to call it was wrong or it was a choice or something I could get rid of; I always knew that it wasn't. But I was taught to doubt myself, and so many people are taught to doubt who they are, who God created them to be. Our emotions, our feelings, our conscience, our intuition these are our gifts from God. They are what make us unique and they are what we need to fully bring forward, each and every one of us, if we are going to heal forward together. Next episode I will be joined by best-selling author, podcaster, and PROGRESSIVE pastor Colby Martin. Colby is passionate about carving out a space within Christianity that includes: a whole-heartedly affirming posture toward LGBTQ individuals, a broader acceptance of other spiritual practices and religious perspectives, an agreeableness toward science, and a commitment to always growing, transforming, and trusting that the best days are yet to come. Join us next episode as I sit down with Colby Martin! Colby is one of leading voices of the Progressive Christian movement, he made me cry with his vision for the church in his first book UnClobber – Rethinking our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality” and introduce me to the incredible voices of Brian McLaren and Glennon Doyle. Colby will be talking about his newly released book ‘The Shift: Surviving and Thriving after Moving from Conversative to Progressive Christianity' I want to give away a free copy of his book ‘The Shift' to a listener of This Little Light Of Mine. For your chance to win all you need to do is subscribe, rate and leave a review of This Little Light Of Mine on Apple Podcasts or on IGTV. Next episode I will choose one of the reviews and send you your very own copy of ‘The Shift'. I have one more surprise. I want to introduce you to Nancy Shadlock, CEO and founder of Centered life coaching and host of The Coming Out Chronicles. Thank you again for being with us today and before I go I want to remind you. Your story is important. Your thoughts are important. Your intuition is important. Your knowing is important. Your questions are important. Your doubting is important. And what if, what if you're not wrong? You are designed with a powerful voice that we need to hear. You are loved. James
