Ian McCarthy, the head programmer for the 22nd Annual NHFF, calls in for the second of our three Film Festival interviews and talks all about the number of films that were submitted, how they did their film selection as well as naming some of the films he and his team are excited to be shown. He breaks down the various Film Festival Passes that are being offered and chats up some of the “perks” added into a few of them. We really dig into the Thursday October 17th films because that's the day films tied to New Hampshire have their own day to shine. And the day pass is only $30!!!! Some special “blocks” are brought up as well such as the “Rolling with the Punches. Welcoming You into the World of Stunts” and the “Young Filmmakers Workshop”. Trust me, the hour is packed!

It's been a while since true crime writer Ellison Oswalt had a bestseller, and the strain is starting to show on Ellison, his wife Tracy, and their kids Trevor and Ashley.  Local law enforcement isn't keen on him, either, as his last few books didn't cast them in too fond a light. So Ellison and his family take up residence in a modest Pennsylvania ranch house with something of a history – something we learn when we watch as a family is lynched in the house's back yard.  Unfortunately, this may be his last chance at the big time, so Ellison neglects to inform Tracy of this, and when things start going bump in the night, and the home movies left behind reveal ominous clues about a killer's identity, Ellison finds himself turning from the hunter to the hunted.  A helpful deputy steps in to assist, as well as a professor of the occult, but by the time they reveal their own information, the situation has devolved from strange… to sinister. On this episode we continue our short series of conversations with documentary filmmakers whose films will be featured at the New Hampshire Film Festival, which takes places in Portsmouth NH from 10/12-15.   Both of films discussed on this episode explore life for women in worlds usually dominated by men. First up is my chat with Olivia Kuan, the director of a documentary called "The Herricanes," which tells the story of the Houston Herricanes, one of the teams that, in the 1970s, made up the first-ever women's full tackle football league known as the National Women's Football League. And it just so happens that Olivia's mother played safety on the Herricanes for four seasons!    Later in the episode, I speak with director Maggie Contreras, whose documentary, "Maestra," follows five internationally-based women as they prepare for and perform in La Maestra, the only competition in the world for female orchestra conductors.   Making Media Now is sponsored by Filmmakers Collaborative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media makers from across the creative spectrum. For more info about the festival, including its line-up of films, visit NHfilmfestival.com.   First up, host Michael Azevedo chats with Pete Davis, the co-director of a documentary called "Join or Die" which depicts the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.   Pete Davis, who along with Rebecca Davis, co-directed the film, is also a writer and civic advocate. And, he just so happens to be a former student of Robert Putnam's. I am not in recovery. I don't have a personal connection to the opioid crisis, or at least that's what I thought before the production of The Heroin Effect. Three and a half years ago I started filming a documentary film about the opioid epidemic. And that process changed not only my perception of a disease, but it also made me want to create a film that would do the same for others by letting the characters in the film share their stories in their own words."This is an amazing film, unlike any other which focuses on the current addiction crisis. Our guest today joins us from Hollywood, he is https://www.linkedin.com/in/justin-connor-a353089/ (Justin Connor). He is a filmmaker, actor, director, and producer. His latest film is currently out on Amazon Prime called The Golden Age: The Life and Times of Maya O'Malley.  The soundtrack, also written, performed, and produced by Connor, is available on all streaming platforms, with a double vinyl album.  THE GOLDEN AGE, a musical rockumentary shot over a decade in California and India, introduces us to the character of subversive pop star Maya O'Malley who, after a string of controversial remarks, gets dropped from his music label and sets out on a spiritual pilgrimage throughout India in an attempt to resolve his troubled past.  Winner of the Audience Award at the AWARENESS FILM FESTIVAL and winner of the Best Performance Award at the NEW HAMPSHIRE FILM FESTIVAL, Connor is also releasing A DAY IN THE LIES, a memoir novel that delves deeper into the life of the film's main protagonist, Maya O'Malley, which will be released on Amazon later this Summer.  Justin Connor currently lives in Los Angeles, and splits time between music and painting, and prepping the release of his third album, MATERIAL LIFE.  You can track the film's progress on social media as well as at http://www.justinconnor.com/ (www.justinconnor.com).  Justin says that he started as an actor but then veered towards music, released an album, and then for this second album as he was trying to figure out how to adjoin writing and directing a film that intertwined music without relying on lip-syncing. He wanted songs that helped tell the story in an organic way. He was also watching a lot of documentaries at that time and decided to play with the ideas of what's real and what's fake.  The character of Maya is born in these moments, he wanted to have a more substantive dialogue on the permutations of fame and pop culture and substantive songwriting. Something similar to Bob Dylan and Roger Waters did. He wanted to tell a story that was partially autobiographical about his own past. The whole document ends up being a comedy, but a comedy that also is supported on reality. It's a satire about material life, documentaries of artists and how artists are broken. He tried to approach the story with sincerity.  The form of the documentary proved to be challenging because you play a little trick by satirizing.  The Filmmaking Process  The process of making a film such as this along with music and the collaboration of a team Justin also said that it was a healing exercise for him. As a survivor of abuse, Justin says that there is an immense amount of shame that people end up struggling with. Those wounds don't necessarily go away per se but people eventually learn to bridge a different connection with them. Justin got to really challenge himself while making this film.  Justin also talks about how sometimes the stories that stayed with him after going through a dysfunctional household also make him feel that he had to heal from them like it was a mandatory thing. Which is something that he also wanted to reflect on in this documentary. Victims can heal and grow, just on their own terms and time.  Currently, Justin is also finishing a book that will accompany the film and will go even deeper into it. He hopes that this story can help others heal. So this whole process has helped Justin heal a lot and come to terms with his wounds. This is why in part the film took so long before he was really wrapped in this and now in the end phase he feels like he is finally starting his life over.  His multiple roles in filmmaking  Justin is the creator, director, and actor in this film. He also made music for it and a book.  Justin talks about how his role as a writer is different from his role as a filmmaker. In the film, scenes may need to be cut, which is something that Justin was careful...

New Hampshire is home to an astounding group of incredibly talented and diverse individuals. And Michael Venn is certainly to be named among them. Quentin Tarantino is quoted as saying "I never went to film schools, I went to films." That quote describes the filmmaking journey Michael over the last 9 years. From NEVER having made a film or taken a single filmmaking class to creating an award winning film now seen around the world, his story arc is indeed impressive. In this episode, he sits with us and speaks about his beginnings 9yrs ago, the impact the New Hampshire Film Festival had on him and how he decided to just take the plunge and "just do it". He talks about the extreme importance of a good producer, the producers role in filmmaking and why a good producers "eye" is critical. We learn how his baptism by fire came when he ended up having to direct and edit his own film knowing that 900 people were going to pay to see the final product. No pressure there. He talks about what "happy accidents" are during the filming process, why comic books are storyboards just sitting there ready to be made into films and the thrill of how a local guy from Portsmouth, NH with no filmmaking background is showing others how it can be done.

My guest this week is psychologist and author Dr. Ross Greene. Ross encourages parents to let go of unhelpful efforts to help kids who aren't meeting our expectations, such as punishment and other parent-imposed solutions. His approach focuses instead on solving problems collaboratively with our children, using a straightforward three-step method. Topics we explored together included: The importance of the lens through which we view children The belief that “Kids do well if they wanna” vs. “Kids do well if they can” The danger of missing important information about our kids by jumping to adult-imposed consequences The advantages of asking the child what’s getting in the way of meeting an expectation The messages we inadvertently give kids when we don’t take the time to listen What all kids need from their parents Good parenting as knowing and being responsive to the child’s goals, preferences, and skills “Problem behaviors” vs. “Unsolved problems” The paradox of having less control over kids by trying to impose one’s will Ross's Collaborative and Proactive Solutions approach The advantage of solving problems proactively rather than in the heat of the moment How to address parental concerns with your child Collaborating with your child to develop solutions for unsolved problems The downsides of quickly jumping to a “life lesson” with our kids The cost of being busy on having time to solve problems collaboratively Ross mentioned Tony Wagner’s books, which you can check out on Tony's Amazon page. His most popular books include Most Likely to Succeed and The Global Achievement Gap.  The book Ross and I focused on is available here: Raising Human Beings; he's written other books, including The Explosive Child and Lost and Found. (A percentage of each purchase made through these affiliate links will be used to support the podcast, at no additional cost to you.) Ross W. Greene, PhD, is adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia. I highly recommend this fantastic piece of work!Visit the Unpause Your Life site for the full post and more details:https://unpauseyourlife.com/52For more information on Michael Venn:https://theheroineffect.comTwitter:https://twitter.com/MichaelSVennhttps://twitter.com/theheroineffectFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/michael.vennhttps://www.facebook.com/TheHeroinEffect/LinkedIn:https://linkedin.com/in/michaelvenn/More info - http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy - The Nation’s Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly - http://crowflyrocks.com/Unpause Your Life with Dr. Cali Esteshttps://businessinnovatorsradio.com/unpause-your-life/

The New Hampshire Film Festival took place in October, and The Last Podcast team (me and Christy--Shosh was with her grandparents) was there to capture it all. This episode features conversations with festival-goers and filmmakers and was recorded entirely October 13-16.  We discuss a lot of short films in this episode, and you don't need to have seen them to follow along--most of what we talk about pertains to filmmaking in general, and the examples don't really matter. But we have a long chat with the director Josh Peterson, and you can view the trailer for his film Forest Born here: https://vimeo.com/135806197 Other films we touch on include: Crest Of The Hill, which you can watch in full here: http://livingwithalz.org/user_submitted_film/crest-of-the-hill/ Confessions Of A Cannabis Consultant--teaser here: http://markdugas.com/cannabis_consultant/ I'll try to post a complete guide to the episode at zaclittle.tumblr.com We also discuss Food Fight and Peter And The Farm--two feature length documentaries. Peter And The Farm is available on VOD now.  This episode features music by me and Christy, and also a little from Joanna Newsom, and features the voices of a lot of people, including our old friend Dan Freund and the director Shirley Abraham, who we will hear more from next week.  Plus we'll talk about this fucking election, and where the podcast goes from here.

In today's ep, we talk about weddings, and linguistic trends among the clergy. Then, we talk about a different sort of marriage: the marriage between still images (made possible by persistence of vision theory) known as MOVIES. Feature Film! Cinema! Old Tinseltoes! Is that a thing? First off, Zac and Christy share theories in some field recordings from the New Hampshire Film Festival. Next, Zac has a lengthy chat with Paul Neafcy, author and videomaker. Paul's novel THE PRINCESS AND THE FOOL is available now. Follow him on Twitter! @pneafcy.
