The Gorge - the latest film from Doctor Strange and Sinister director Scott Derrickson - has landed on Apple TV+. Welcome back to MOVIE Morning for another review and this time, we'll be talking about a streaming movie; I feel like it's been a while. I think Scott Derrickson is a very talented director: I'm, of course, a huge fan of Doctor Strange and Sinister, but also of the fantastic The Black Phone and the very underrated The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The Gorge, though, hasn't looked great from the previews and I really can't bring myself to get excited for streaming movies nowadays, unless they're titled Knives Out and directed by one of the all-time greatest filmmakers. Is The Gorge a solid thriller for Valentine's Day weekend, or is this one a pass like most streaming films? Find out in this review! The Gorge:Directed by: Scott DerricksonWritten by: Zach DeanProduced by: C. The hook is great: Dr. Watson is the actual brains behind all the mystery-solving, whereas Holmes is actually a drunken idiot hired to keep the media distracted. And boy do Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley have fun bickering and bantering their way through this unjustly forgotten farce. Big thanks to the illustrious wordsmith C. Marvel Pulls Blade, New York City Comic Con Round Up! Daredevil, DCU, Comics, and Lots of Trailers

This Week on Multiverse News! Between last weekend's New York Comic Con and the regular news cycle, this week has treated us to some tasty, and maybe not so tasty, Marvel morsels. The most substantial news impacting the MCU was the official March 4, 2025 release date for Daredevil: Born Again on Disney Plus and, per an exclusive with Collider, the Russos confirmed Avengers: Doomsday will begin filming next spring. Elsewhere, while speaking on the Rich Roll Podcast, Tom Holland chimed in with his excitement after having read the script for his upcoming, fourth Spider-Man film, saying that there were still things for the writers to figure out and work on, but that it is a real movie, worthy of the fans' respect. Finally, today Disney removed Blade, which was slated for November 7, 2025, from its release calendar. Taking a hard left turn, let's talk some DC, where James Gunn debuted the official trailer for Creature Commandos. During the Comic Con panel, cast and crew, including Gunn, executive producer Dean Lorey and Alan Tudyk to name a few, highlighted the animated series' mature, violent tone and Eastern European aesthetic, even comparing it to the TV show Lost; and cited how voices were cast with live action appearances and integration specifically considered. While celebrating the series' unique identity in the context of the DCU, Gunn of course couldn't miss the opportunity to provide minor updates for Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lanterns and Superman, promising, “It won't be too long before we see a trailer, but it also won't be too soon.” HBO's Dune: Prophecy treated fans with a new trailer and an official release date coming out of NYCC: the series will premiere Sunday, Nov. 17. The official logline for the series reads, “From the expansive universe of ‘Dune,' created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, ‘Dune: Prophecy' follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.” The season is made up of six episodes and will release on Sundays on HBO and Max. Netflix has released the official trailer for the Russo Brothers' upcoming sci fi action movie “The Electric State,” starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. The film begins streaming on March 14th, 2025. Shrinking has been renewed for season 3 at AppleTV+. Josh Brolin and Lee Pace are currently in final negotiations to star opposite Glen Powell in The Running Man, Paramount's adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Both actors will portray villains in the film. Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly casting new leads in their 20s for Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2, with singer Billie Eilish among rumored contenders for the one-year roles of John and Jane. At New York Comic Con, AMC released the first trailer for Season 2 of Walking Dead: Dead City and announced that it will begin streaming sometime in the spring of 2025. Blumhouse showcased exclusive MEGAN 2.0 footage, with the killer doll teasing she's received an "upgrade" in a special NYCC message. With production complete, the sequel is set to release on June 27, 2025. Blumhouse also unveiled a new trailer for Leigh Whannel's The Wolfman starring Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott. Also during the Blumhouse NYCC panel, Director Mike Flanagan spoke about his new version of The Exorcist, which he considers "the scariest movie ever made." Beyond Flanagan expressing his excitement to tackle the iconic property, no additional details about the project were revealed at the NYCC panel. Following the success of the original film, director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill are returning for The Black Phone 2, bringing back Ethan Hawke and the original cast for what Derrickson describes as a "high school coming-of-age film" based on an idea from author Joe Hill.

“I like that you made the movies longer, they are better this way.”Scott Derrickson's nightmare after watching The Ring sparked the creation of Sinister, a chilling tale that taps into the growing fascination with true crime. Co-written with his frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill, Derrickson's film follows a true crime writer who moves his family into a house with a brutal past, only to uncover a sinister supernatural force at work. Released in 2012, Sinister arrived just as the true crime craze was gaining momentum, with podcasts and television shows exploring the darker side of human nature. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2013 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Best Actor Nominees series with a conversation about Sinister.Ethan Hawke's Descent into DarknessIn Sinister, Ethan Hawke delivers a brooding and moody performance as a true crime writer determined to unravel the mystery behind a series of disturbing home movies. As he delves deeper into the investigation, Hawke's character becomes increasingly obsessed, putting his family in danger and blurring the lines between reality and the supernatural. We discuss how the film uses jump scares and horrific imagery to create a sense of dread and unease, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.Haunted Houses and Demonic DeedsOne of the key points we explore in our discussion is how Sinister subverts the "haunted house" trope. Instead of the horror being confined to a single location, the film has the demon Bughuul's influence follow the family even after they leave the murder house. This raises questions about the logic of Bughuul's actions and whether the film needed to provide a clearer explanation for his behavior. We debate the effectiveness of this approach and how it contributes to the overall sense of unease that permeates the film.Sinister Sounds and Creepy KidsThe film's effective use of sound design and lighting to create a creepy atmosphereThe unsettling portrayal of the ghost children and their role in the murdersThe challenges of working with child actors in horror films and how Sinister handles their creepy scenesThe Verdict on SinisterSinister is a film that effectively taps into the growing fascination with true crime and delivers a creepy and unsettling horror experience. While the logic of Buhguul's actions may not hold up under scrutiny, the film's strong atmosphere, effective scares, and thought-provoking themes make it a standout entry in the horror genre. We have a great time discussing the film's strengths and weaknesses, so check it out and then tune in to hear our full conversation. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite fictional Universes Florence Pugh tempted the ire of Marvel Studios' infamous snipers, when she shared a video tour of the Thunderbolts set via social media last week. Though the video was clearly staged and was sparse on reveals and details, it did give us our first official look at Yelena Belova's new combat-ready getup. A clear departure from Marvel's typical airtight protocol. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire enjoyed a $194 million global debut last week, enough to place it as the third highest grossing film of the year after just one weekend of release. The movie is the fifth film in Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise, which includes the recent Apple TV Plus series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Though not connected to recent Oscar winner, Godzilla: Minus One, this opening clearly shows a renewed interest in all things Godzilla. Star Trek's Kelvin Timeline, that is the Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana-led and JJ Abrams-produced films, may be getting a fourth and final film, as Steve Yockey has been added as a screenwriter. Yockey is best known for creating the Max series The Flight Attendant, starring Kaley Cuoco. Three previous screenwriters had been attached to the project, including WandaVision showrunner and Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman. Star Trek hasn't been on the big screen since 2016's Star Trek: Beyond, but has enjoyed a lot of success with various streaming series. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer went two for two the last couple of weeks here on Multiverse News. Last week teasing a return of the Pirates franchise and now a possible third film in the National Treasure franchise, all during his promotion of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. While his comments were vague, they were optimistic – speaking to his confidence in an unnamed writer working on a script that only needs Nic Cage's approval. The Mandalorian and Quantumania actor Katy O'Brian has been cast in Mission: Impossible 8. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill, will adapt a new version of the acclaimed 1953 crime novel The Night of the Hunter for Universal. Final Destination Bloodlines has added to its main cast. Brec Bassinger, who starred in The CW's DC series Stargirl, Chucky actor Teo Briones and Dear Evan Hansen stage actress Kaitlyn Santa Juana, The 100 star Richard Harmon, Gotham Knights actress Anna Lore and Owen Patrick Joyner, one of the stars of Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms will all star in leading roles in the sixth installment of the franchise which is now in production. A sequel to the 2003 Disney body swap comedy Freaky Friday seems to be in the works, as Chippendale's director Nisha Ganatra has been attached and stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are currently in negotiations to return. Scream 7 looks to add another series regular after the return of Neve Campbell, with Courteney Cox in talks to reprise her role as Gale Weathers. Ezra Miller was quietly replaced by Eric Bauza for their voice role as a minor antagonist in Amazon's Invincible. Universal Pictures has postponed two Blumhouse horror films. Leigh Whannel's Wolf Man will now premiere on January 17, 2025, three months later than planned. The Woman in the Yard was removed from the schedule, but will be rescheduled. Louis Gossett Jr., the Oscar and Emmy-winning actor known for roles in Watchmen and The Punisher, has passed away at 87. He was the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for An Officer and a Gentleman and also earned an Emmy for Roots. Chance Perdomo, who starred in the television series Gen V and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, has died as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was 27. A new poster was released for Joker: Folie à Deux along with the tease for an incoming trailer on April 9 by Lady Gaga herself. The film will release on October 4.

It's been a while since true crime writer Ellison Oswalt had a bestseller, and the strain is starting to show on Ellison, his wife Tracy, and their kids Trevor and Ashley.  Local law enforcement isn't keen on him, either, as his last few books didn't cast them in too fond a light. So Ellison and his family take up residence in a modest Pennsylvania ranch house with something of a history – something we learn when we watch as a family is lynched in the house's back yard.  Unfortunately, this may be his last chance at the big time, so Ellison neglects to inform Tracy of this, and when things start going bump in the night, and the home movies left behind reveal ominous clues about a killer's identity, Ellison finds himself turning from the hunter to the hunted.  A helpful deputy steps in to assist, as well as a professor of the occult, but by the time they reveal their own information, the situation has devolved from strange… to sinister. Episodes 109 and 110 together make up Part 4 of our series. On March 24th, 2022, the Associates for Biblical Research announced the discovery of an ancient curse tablet (defixio) on Mount Ebal at the site of "Joshua's altar."  This is a potentially WORLD-SHAKING discovery, but the dust has not yet settled, and the academic war is only just beginning. Following the publication of the find and its analysis, the critical juggernaut, led by Drs. Christopher Rollston and Robert Cargill is proceeding apace in an apparent attempt to shut down serious investigation of this defixio. In episodes 107-110 we will investigate in some detail the critical evaluation of this discovery, with Dr. Rollston's position in episodes 108 & 109, and Dr. Cargill's in episode 110. In this series, as we promised in episode #52, we revisit this discovery following the publication of the scholarly paper on May 12th of this year. We hope to lay out the context and reasons this discovery and its controversial interpretation is so important. To do so, we must become acquainted with modern theology and biblical criticism as practiced in the contemporary West, the ongoing scholarly debate over the defixio, and finally to discuss C. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." I would suggest that our listeners review our original episode, The Christian Atheist #52: “The Curse Tablet: Archaeology and Faith.” I have listed a series of websites below for more information. Following the publication of the peer-reviewed academic* paper, the critical juggernaut, led by Drs. Christopher Rollston and Robert Cargill is proceeding apace in an apparent attempt to shut down serious investigation of this defixio. I argue that they are attempting to poison the well, not engaging in a fair academic disagreement based on the reality. In episodes 107-110 we will investigate in some detail the critical evaluation of this discovery, with Dr. Rollston's position in episode 108-109 and Dr. Cargill's in episode 110. In this series, as we promised in episode #52, we hope to lay out the context and reasons this discovery and its controversial interpretation is so important. To do so, we must become acquainted with modern theology and biblical criticism as practiced in the contemporary West, the ongoing scholarly debate over the defixio, and finally to discuss C. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." *Please see the link below to access the scholarly paper by Dr. Stripling and his associates, which is open access in the journal Heritage Science. Sinister (2012) Sinister is a 2012 American supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by C. Robert Cargill and Derrickson. It stars Ethan Hawke as a struggling true-crime writer whose discovery of videos depicting grisly murders in his new house puts his family in danger. Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley, and Michael Hall D'Addario appear in supporting roles.  Sinister was inspired by a nightmare Cargill had after watching the 2002 film The Ring.  Principal photography on Sinister began in Autumn of 2011 in Long Island, NY with a production budget of $3 million.[3] To add the authenticity of old home movies and snuff films, the Super 8 segments were shot on actual Super 8 cameras and film stock We Are Still Here (2015)   We Are Still Here is a 2015 American horror film written and directed by Ted Geoghegan and starring Andrew Sensenig and Barbara Crampton as grieving parents who find themselves the focus of an attack by vengeful spirits. The film had its world premiere on 15 March 2015 at South by Southwest.     Opening Credits; Introduction (1.04); Background History (10.02);Sinister  Film Trailer (12.00); The Original (14.29); Let's Rate (41.05); Introducing the Double Feature (44.43); We Are Still Here Film Trailer (45.33); The Attraction (47.08); How Many Stars (1:05.06); Overall End Credits (1:09.28); Closing Credits (1:10.56)     Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – copyright 2021. Today, on Literary Disco, we continue our genre-based season. Each episode of this season, we're diving deep into a particular literary genre, exploring what defines it, what makes it work or not work, interviewing authors, talking to fans, scholars, whomever can help us unlock what it is that makes a genre a genre. And with this, our third episode, we grab a flashlight, head into the dark woods to that house on the hill or just maybe the closet in our own room to creep around the corners, waiting for the tingling sensation in the back of our necks. And we try to find what's in the darkness as we confront the genre of horror. This episode's special guests include Jeff Jerome, Curator Emeritus of the Poe House and Museum; Susan Scarf Merrell, author of Shirley based on the life of Shirley Jackson; and novelist and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill, who wrote the films Sinister, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On the latest Hot Takes, Bernadette and Robby take a look at this year's runaway horror hit, The Black Phone. Along the way, they discuss the joy of watching Ethan Hawke (especially spooky Hawke!) and the unavoidable legacy of Stephen King found in Joe Hill's storytelling (Hill being King's son). They also chat about how refreshing it is to watch a story not steeped in lore, the importance of artistic interpretation, and just what happened to Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill's version of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Listen on....

It's hard to believe that the now classic horror flick SINISTER (2012) is over a decade old.  The film put together director and co-screenwriter Scott Derrickson, co-screenwriter C. Robert Cargill, and actors Ethan Hawke and James Ransone together for what would not be the only time.  Now in 2022, their new film has come out and has received good reviews.  The movie, THE BLACK PHONE (2022), based off a short story by Joe Hill, was released to theaters in late June, 2022. Finn and his younger sister Gwen live with their widower father.  For a year, their home town outside Denver, Colorado has been plagued by a child abductor given the name “The Grabber” by the press.  When Finn's friend disappears, people fear the worse.  Soon, the town is in panic as children keep disappearing to never return. The movie has received fine reviews, including a four out of four star from the Roger Ebert website.  Scott Derrickson left doing the latest Dr. Strange film to pull this remarkably solid horror film together.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this period piece (that takes place in 1978) and gives their thoughts.

This week on the pod Jeff, John & Dave say F you to the partisan, hypocritical, power hungry, regressive, contradictory Supreme Court by discussing a really fun genre film! This movie has that 70s-era slow burn horror feel to match the setting- 1978 in North Denver- and enough suspense and jump scares to possibly make this a rewatch-able flick! Fantastic cast, fantastic crew, go check this out. Screw those hoity-toity critics, who are mostly warm on the film but with a little condescension. This is definitely worth it. We discuss. It's by Joe Hill & the team that brought you Doctor Strange and Sinister. And the director liked one of Dave's tweets! So, see it. Director: Scott Derrickson Screenwriter: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, Joe Hill (short story The Black Phone) Starring: Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davies, James Ransom, Miguel Cazarez Mora, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal Runtime: 1 hour 42 minutes Synopsis: After being abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims. We got the whole Movie Trailer Review gang back together to discuss the latest from director Scott Derrickson, The Black Phone. Blumhouse has been on a bit of a slide with some really questionable films as of late. Their last series of Welcome to the Blumhouse films on Amazon Prime Video were absolutely atrocious. And who could forget what happened when we all got together last time to discuss the travesty that was the Firestarter remake. So coming into The Black Phone, one couldn't blame audiences if they were a little apprehensive. Thankfully, The Black Phone  A lot of things work for this movie. First, Scott Derrickson really knows how to capture horror elements in this film. It's a trend across all of his films but it really stands out in this one. The camera angles, sound editing, framing and everything comes together to really draw the audience into the situations in this film. It also helps that the cast is outstanding. Ethan Hawke has been on a tear lately with the characters and range he's been portraying in movies this year. He's perfectly cast as "The Grabber". He does a lot of "eye acting" that pairs very well with the various masks he wears. But it's not just him. This film has a really solid cast of young actors with Mason Thomas and Madeleine McGraw that pair off extremely well with the adults in this film. The Black Phone has a mix of Stranger Things with your typical Horror Thriller that works very well for it. It can be dumb at times and even predictable but it's done in a way that feels like it pays off in the end so the audiences will enjoy it. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode!
