In this episode, we explore the comprehensive strategic investments cruise lines are making to dominate global waterways, focusing on simultaneous fleet refinement, massive capacity expansion, and entry into highly competitive markets. We look at how Princess Cruises is maintaining a competitive edge through targeted revitalization, such as the extensive two-week dry dock of the Sapphire Princess. This refit centered on transforming existing spaces into premium dining venues, including the acclaimed Crown Grill Steakhouse and the new Makoto Ocean Edomae-style sushi venue by Chef Makoto Okuwa. Beyond dining upgrades, this strategy supports targeted market expansion, as the Sapphire Princess prepares for diverse itineraries, culminating in Princess Cruises' most expansive Japan season ever in 2027.Next, we dive into the staggering growth of Viking Cruises, which recently expanded its total fleet to 103 vessels with the addition of nine new river ships. This move underscores Viking's ongoing commitment to tailored, region-specific travel experiences. The new ships, including those purpose-built for Egypt's Nile River (Viking Thoth and Viking Amun), solidify Viking's leadership in vessel count and demonstrate remarkable profitability. Viking's committed orderbook anticipates a total fleet of 135 vessels by 2031.Finally, we examine the strategic shift by Trafalgar, a major guided vacation company, as it makes a decisive entry into the river cruising industry. Trafalgar's expansion reflects a move to meet the rising demand for immersive European journeys. The company plans to debut its first-ever river cruise fleet in 2028, leveraging its decades of guided travel expertise to redefine the luxury river cruising standards with innovative vessel designs and curated shore excursions. We discuss how these three diverse strategies—refinement, capacity growth, and new market entry—reflect the industry's renewed confidence and focus on delivering elevated, experience-driven products across river and ocean segments.

This episode covers three distinct updates defining the future of maritime travel. First, we explore the debut of Aman Resorts' first luxury yacht, Amangati, launching in spring 2027. This vessel is characterized by its minimalist Japanese-inspired design, exclusivity (47 suites), and commitment to sustainability through a hybrid propulsion system. Second, we highlight Carnival Cruise Line's 2027-28 itineraries, specifically the highly anticipated 11-day Carnival Journeys sailing aboard Carnival Miracle, which positions guests near the Strait of Gibraltar for optimal viewing of the August 2, 2027, total solar eclipse. Lastly, we recognize Princess Cruises' Sun Princess, which secured the title of #1 Mega Cruise Ship in the Condé Nast Traveler 2025 Readers' Choice Awards for the second consecutive year. The Sphere-Class ship is acclaimed for its innovative features, including The Dome and the exclusive Spellbound by Magic Castle speakeasy.
Und wie man mit Gambling an kostenlose Kreuzfahrten kommen kann – jedenfalls theoretisch. d America and Princess Cruises are the top choices—and whether a 7-day Alaska cruise or an extended cruise tour with Denali and Fairbanks is the best way to see Alaska's glaciers, wildlife, and culture. In this episode of RTE Travel Talk – Ask a Real Travel Expert, Ken sits down with Tim Hersh of Cruise Holidays and Tours of Topeka to break down the differences, the costs, and what you can truly expect from each option. A 7-day Alaska cruise with Holland America or Princess Cruises offers breathtaking views of the Inside Passage, iconic ports like Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, and glacier encounters that rival any destination on earth. You unpack once, enjoy life onboard, and take in the scenery from the ship's perspective. But if you want to immerse yourself deeper into Alaska's culture, wildlife, and wilderness, a cruise tour is the way to go. Tim explains how extending your journey to Denali, Fairbanks, or even the Yukon adds a completely new dimension—think dome train rides, journey hosts, wilderness excursions, and unique overland adventures. We also cover: When to go for the best experience (and best pricing). Whether you should splurge on a balcony or save with an inside cabin. How costs differ between a cruise and cruise tour. Why Holland America and Princess Cruises are the leaders in Alaska. Insider tips on meals, luggage transfers, and what surprises travelers the most. Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
1. “If my motivation is to make the best product, the money will follow as a consequence.” 2. “A leader must give up ego and put the right people in the right place—even if it risks their seat.” 3. “You have to read the atmosphere; the same person may need a different approach each time.” 4. “To be a leader, you have to suffer, take the hard way, and do the work yourself first.” 5. “If you don't care about people, then don't do this job—leadership is a people business.” Elio Orsara began his career at the Grand Hotel San Michele in Calabria, then worked in Milan and London, opened his first restaurant in Spain, joined the Love Boat with Princess Cruises in the U.S., worked in Italian restaurants in Los Angeles, moved to a high-end golf course in northern Italy, became a supervisor at the Shin-Kobe Oriental Hotel in Japan, produced restaurants for the Daiei Group, and in 1996 opened Elio Locanda Italiana in Tokyo. Awards and Honours 1998 – Ristorante Italiano 1999 – Best Italian Restaurant, ICCJ 2006 – Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Cavaliere) 2009 – Calabria Excellence Award 2011 – Italian Hospitality International Certification 2012 – Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ufficiale) 2017 – Ambassador of Stocco di Mammola 2019 – Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Commendatore) Elio's philosophy of leadership is rooted in lived experience, resilience, and a deep respect for people. His journey from a young dreamer in Italy to a successful restaurateur and multi-business owner in Japan shaped his view that leadership is not learned in theory but forged through hardship and personal accountability. He believes true leaders must first endure and overcome challenges themselves before guiding others. For him, leadership is less about rigid formulas and more about adaptability, emotional intelligence, and a willingness to keep learning. Central to his approach is the belief that leadership is fundamentally about people. In the hospitality business, technical skill matters, but without genuine care for customers and staff, success cannot be sustained. Elio treats every guest as an individual, reading the situation and adjusting his approach to create comfort, trust, and connection. He applies the same principle to his staff, emphasizing empathy, education, and personal growth. For young recruits, he looks for ambition and motivation, preferring those who aspire to run their own business rather than settle into a lifetime of employment. He invests heavily in training, even sending staff to Italy to deepen their understanding of food culture, and he maintains loyalty through long-term relationships, profit-sharing, and respect for their personal lives. His restaurants enjoy unusually high staff retention, which he attributes to creating a family-like atmosphere and recognizing each individual's value. He rejects the insecurity that causes some leaders to avoid hiring people more capable than themselves, instead surrounding himself with complementary strengths to cover areas where he lacks expertise. Elio's leadership style blends influences from multiple cultures—American business acumen, Japanese service philosophy, and Italian warmth and passion. From the Japanese, he learned patience, discipline, and the value of sustained effort; from the Americans, an entrepreneurial mindset; and from his Italian heritage, the importance of hospitality, human connection, and pride in craftsmanship. He is pragmatic about the realities of business risk, having weathered major setbacks, including the challenges following the 2011 Fukushima disaster. In such crises, he believes leaders must not only manage the business but also sustain morale, finding ways to keep teams engaged and feeling purposeful. His decision to deliver food to disaster-stricken areas after Fukushima exemplified this—addressing both community needs and staff motivation. Delegation, for Elio, is about trust and timing. He identifies capable individuals within his organization, aligns their responsibilities with their skills, and gives them both autonomy and a share in the rewards. While expansion is necessary to create opportunities for ambitious staff, he avoids diversifying outside his area of expertise, focusing exclusively on the food business where he can lead from a position of deep knowledge. Ultimately, Elio sees leadership as an act of service—serving customers, employees, and the broader community. It requires humility, constant self-critique, and the courage to make decisions that prioritize people and quality over short-term profit. For him, success comes when a leader creates an environment where both people and business can thrive together.
Princess Cruises have entered mega-ship cruising with the launch of their 4,300-passenger Sphere Class ships, Sun and Star Princess. Hearing it was totally different to their other ships, reading very divided reviews, and seeing many asking if Princess were abandoning loyal guests to attract a different type of passenger, I had to test it out for myself. And this is the good and bad news I found. And I will reveal, as past frequent Princess cruiser, if I will I cruise on these ships again….or not. It's been three years since I was last on Princess Cruises, when I vowed to never return after going on three underwhelming cruises in the space of 12 months: Sky and Regal Princess in Europe and Majestic Princess in Alaska. I felt Princess had lost its way, and they had slipped behind their competition in the premium category. In fact, I made a video after those cruises, which is entitled “My Last Time? Issues I Have With Princess” about my feelings. But I relented because I wanted to go on a Group Cruise hosted by my vlogger friends “Paul and Carol Love To Travel” which was on Sky Princess. Is it just me or has the cost of playing bingo on your average cruise ship (as opposed to Bingo Cruises), gotten out of control? Especially since the amount of actual games being played is minimal. That's one of things on my mind. The other is, where are all the bingo players I typically see going? Are they burning out?

Send us a textThis week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast join me and guest Peter Knego, a maritime historian, journalist and creator of YouTube's MidShipCinema, currently working on a video about the fascinating career and sad end of the Pacific Princess, Princess Cruises much loved ship that was the “star” of the Love Boat TV series that changed the face of cruising forever. With 2025 as the 60th anniversary year of Princess Cruises now unfolding, Peter will share what was and special about the Pacific Princess and discuss how that ship captured the imagination of millions of future cruisers. He will also share what became of this once revered ship in her post Princess days. Peter has one of the most unique and multifaceted seafaring stories I have ever heard. His home is virtually entirely comprised of cruise ship artifacts—made up of panels, artwork, and furniture including bars, from scrapped ships. During his first visit, Ep. 56 Peter Knego we focused mainly on the collector aspect of Peter's persona, took a virtual tour of his house and backyard comprised of original artwork and artifacts including from the Love Boat. You can learn a great deal about Peter the collector, and his passion for older ships from his website, midshipcentury.com, and YouTube channel, Peter Knego's MidShipCinema, described as “unique, exclusive and personally captured video of the world's great ocean liners and cruise ships...past & present.” This excerpt from midshipcentury.com captures his reason for being, his raison d'être: “… today's mega cruise ships, offer a myriad of amenities to make the passenger forget he or she is even at sea. But unlike ocean liners, these boxy monoliths are fitted out like modern hotels with store-bought furnishings and fire-resistant materials. In this episode, Danna and Kristin are back in the studio, catching up after a busy stretch of travel. Kristin is home for a while with no major trips on the horizon, while Danna is itching to get away somewhere warm. They chat about past conferences, including Kristin's recent cooperative conference experience, where she unexpectedly earned “wife points” for attending a 7 a.m. session. A highlight of Kristin's trip was an impromptu audience member—an older gentleman who unknowingly sat in on her podcast recording by the pool. After listening to the entire conversation, he complimented the discussion, proving that you never know who you might meet while traveling. The conversation then shifts to books, with both Danna and Kristin sharing their recent reads and book-tracking apps like Bookmory and Goodreads. Kristin is on a reading spree, enjoying a mix of light fiction and more intense, “messed-up” books, while Danna proudly celebrates finishing a book of her own. They also talk about sneaky Audible hacks and the best ways to access free audiobooks through library apps like Libby. Finally, they discuss future travel plans, including the possibility of a family cruise in 2026. With cruise prices making less sense (why is it cheaper to go to Europe than the Caribbean?), they debate different cruise lines, inspired by a Princess Cruises commercial featuring Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso. The episode wraps up with a hilarious look at Danna's household, where impromptu line dancing sessions seem to be the norm—even if she's not entirely convinced she enjoys it. Stay tuned for more travel, book talk, and unexpected adventures next time!
