Three brilliant frontmen lit up the 1990s with voices that could break your heart with songs that still echo today. Jeff Buckley soared with Grace before vanishing into a Memphis river. Blind Melon's Shannon Hoon danced barefoot through MTV fame, only to spiral into addiction on a tour bus in New Orleans. Alice in Chains' Layne Staley turned despair into anthems, then faded into reclusion until his lonely death in Seattle. This episode unpacks their meteoric rises, their drug-fueled downfalls, and the enduring legacies they left behind.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store
People say that listening to our show is like watching bottles gather rain. But not today! Join us for an exclusive chat with Christopher Thorn, guitarist and co-founder of '90s alt-rock legends Blind Melon! We dive into the band's rise with hits like “No Rain" and why it was a double edged sword, the creative process behind their iconic albums, and the legacy of Shannon Hoon. Christopher shares stories from the road, insights on the All I Can Say documentary, his work at Fireside Sound Studio, and the rebirth of Blind Melon. Chris was such a great interview, and an even better guy. A must listen for all Blind Melon fans, past, present, and future. We also talk about Burlew holidays, Mike's trip to UFL football, possibly purchasing a piece of history, and play a ridiculous game called, "Is it blind or melon?" Have a listen!
Send us a textOn this episode of the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, Rogers Stevens of Blind Melon joins us for an in-depth conversation about the band's past, present, and future. Rogers reflects on Blind Melon's upcoming performance at the Pig and Whiskey Festival in St. Louis on Friday, May 9, where they'll be sharing the stage with Smash Mouth, and also looks ahead to a major milestone: the band's first-ever show at Red Rocks while supporting O.A.R. Rogers shares stories from Blind Melon's early days, including their struggles to break through, the cultural phenomenon of “No Rain,” and the bittersweet reality of being labeled a "one-hit wonder." He opens up about pivotal moments in the band's journey, from navigating the music industry's highs and lows to overcoming the tragedy of losing their iconic frontman, Shannon Hoon—a gifted songwriter whose legacy still shapes the band's music and message today. We also dive into Blind Melon's evolution, their move to New Orleans, and how the city's jazz scene—including artists like Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band—inspired tracks like “Lemonade.” Rogers gives insight into the meaning behind songs like “Skinned,” and how the band blends upbeat melodies with deeper, sometimes darker, lyrical themes. This is a must-watch for fans of Blind Melon, 90s alt-rock, and those curious about the resilience and reinvention of one of rock's most unique and heartfelt bands.
The crew looks back 30 years to 1995 and Blind Melon's second album Soup. Widely overlooked due to Shannon Hoon's unfortunate passing soon after release. The haunting documentary All I Can Say, which chronicles a few vibrant years in the life of Shannon Hoon, the lead singer of 90s grunge rock band Blind Melon, is a slice of deep 90s nostalgia shot on camcorder by Hoon himself before he died of a drug overdose in October 1995. In this conversation, Justin Rogers-Cooper joins me to reflect on Hoon's complicated legacy, the strange power of his intimate pre-Internet video diary, and the larger galaxy of 90s grunge martyrs. Join us as we humorously speculate and dissect the emotional powerhouse that is "Tones of Home," drawing parallels to cinematic classics and our own search for authenticity. The conversation is as dynamic as the album itself, meandering through '90s slang and the nostalgia of a simpler time. Today's episode is about "All I Can Say", from 2019, directed by Danny Clinch, Taryn Gould, Colleen Hennessy, and, posthumously, Shannon Hoon. Our guest today is Ryan Bradford. Check out his Substack at https://awkwardsd.substack.com/ as well as our previous episode with Ryan about GWAR. "All I Can Say" is compiled from VHS footage taken by Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon from his early days as an aspiring musician right up until a few hours before his death at 28 from an accidental drug overdose. Shannon compulsively filmed his life during his unlikely rise to fame, from intimate family moments to hanging out with Guns N' Roses. The "found footage" approach takes us into the recording studio, on the road with Blind Melon, and even into the delivery room when Shannon's daughter is being born. The movie is an unexpected and fitting tribute to Shannon's talents as a musician and visual artist. Welcome ROGERS STEVENS, guitarist/co-founder of Blind Melon - as well as Towne & Stevens - to Episode 073! A dream come true for your host, an unabashed lifelong Blind Melon fanatic. Rogers joins the pod from his cozy home studio just outside Philadelphia for a 90-min conversation about his career - past, present, and future. A peek inside Rogers' process making records with Nathan Towne, and Stevens finally finding his singing voice later in life. Working with Rene Lopez again, long after Extra Virgin and The Tender Trio. Growing up a rocker in rural Mississippi. Embarking on the storied sojourn from the Deep South to the Sunset Strip, arriving at the peak of glam-rock hair-band decadence. Rogers pulls up in a Cadillac, sittin' in the back, opens the passenger door and invites us on a wacky, wild, reflective ride through the galaxies of yesteryear in the Blind Melon wayback machine. Buckle up fam, this ep is my love letter to anyone who ever treasured this beautiful band, and those of us who still grieve deep for the dearly-departed Shannon Hoon. 3:15 - a word from our sponsor IAMAVL 6:15 - shoutout COLD BLOODED DESIGNS 7:30 - The Upful Update 10:15 - Introducing ROGERS STEVENS + B.Getz's BLIND MELON rabbithole 31:20 - conversation w/ Rogers [97 min] 2:08:30 - Afterglow & Reflections, + Vibe Junkie JAM Background: In 1990, 23-year-old Shannon Hoon first met Rogers Stevens in Los Angeles after taking a bus from Lafayette, Indiana to SoCal. A year or so earlier, Stevens and bassist Brad Smith had relocated to L.A. from West Point, Mississippi, where they graduated high school and worked on the kill floor of a local slaughterhouse. Stevens connected with Shannon through a mutual friend in Hollywood; Hoon - hometown homies with W. Axl Rose and already making waves on the West Coast - swiftly reeled off a couple of tunes for Rogers. Immediately taken with Hoon's voice and mesmerized by his presence, they decided - on the spot - to form a band together. Blind Melon consisted of Stevens, Hoon, Smith, drummer Glen Graham, and guitarist Christopher Thorn. A promising, multi-hued, idiosyncratic brotherhood that was sadly short-lived. Dreamy single “No Rain” blasted the band into superstardom pretty quickly, and their self-titled debut went triple platinum in the tailwind of the huge hit. In less than five years, the quintet released a strong pair of studio albums, while touring at a furious clip. They appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, SNL, MTV, Canada's MuchMusic, and threw down a legendary set at Woodstock '94. Headlined clubs and theaters, opened stadiums for The Rolling Stones, supported Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Lenny Kravitz, Neil Young, and numerous others. After the monster success of their debut CD, Blind Melon set about refining/redefining their unicorn sound, as evidenced on sensational sophomore record Soup. Critically-panned and a commercial disappointment at the time, over the course of nearly three decades Soup has proven a celebrated fan favorite. A gumbo of compositions and performances that transcend era and genre, Soup is a magnificent work of high art in the Crescent City voodoo tradition. When Hoon died suddenly from a drug overdose, on tour in New Orleans in October 1995, the band was evolving rather organically, though still finding their stride. A posthumous collection of B-sides and outtakes, the gripping Nico (named for Shannon's daughter Nico Blue Hoon - only a few months old when he tragically transitioned) was released in 1996, an emotional nod towards what could've - and should've - been. These days, Rogers Stevens is an attorney who lives in the Philly suburbs with his family. He's currently workshopping songs with Nathan for the next Towne & Stevens record. I offer the deepest of bows & eternal thanks to Rogers Stevens for his time, energy, the music and memories. Rest easy, Shannon Hoon & Long Live Blind Melon! In which The Curmudgeons celebrate an underrated classic album that was Chris's favorite for a stretch when he was 18 years old. Yes, the episode title is a direct assertion about Blind Melon's debut record Chris made once upon a time to Arturo. But was it a warranted statement from a tortured 18-year-old kid? Of course not, but don't we all have an album like that from our youth we adore? Regardless, the album actually is truly great and deserves serious, thoughtful treatment here 30 years later. Here's a handy navigation companion for this episode. And.....we are back! Season 4 of If You Have Ghosts You Have Everything... starts now. On today's episode I recount some synchronicities in my life over the past few weeks. From my visit to George Washington's Mount Vernon to Pine Lake Indiana and then a visit to the grave of Indiana's own Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon fame. The past few weeks have been interesting. Forgive my voice on a few of these recordings as I was recovering from Covid on a couple of these. I should add here that the synchronicities have continued in subsequent days, including a freak mechanical incident with my truck that saw me working on the truck on Saturday morning only to look up and see a Ford Galaxie (a car of the type that Shannon once owned) rolling down the highway by the house. I hope you enjoy and please give a five star review as well as share where you can. I have been incredibly happy to see our listenership increase so dramatically since our appearance on A.I.: Applachian Intelligence and UnComftorable podcast. I will continue the Indiana/world giants stories, the Books of Enoch, Giants, and Jubilees this season and plan to work with J.J.Rose777 on a project as well. Comparado con Janis Joplin, tanto en su voz como en su comportamiento fuera de los escenarios, Hoon terminó siguiendo el fatídico ejemplo de sus ídolos y murió con apenas 28 años.
Sorry, but this one starts out with some talk about something personal that is not remotely happy nor good. Blind Melon's song Mouthful of Cavities plays at the beginning. Very good tune. For stuff I'm into... A bunch of documentaries including this amazing one about the creation of the film Alien (1979) called Memory. I have another doc I will be watching with an old pal about Shannon Hoon called All I Can Say. We'll have some tissue ready for this one. For the rest of it, you'll just have to give her a listen here. Please rate and review. It really does help me out. What's a blind melon? Like most weird band names, there seems to be multiple answers. We'll discuss two of them today, along with the rest of the band's legacy, especially Shannon Hoon. He wasn't around for very long, but he did enough living during that period to make up for it. He also documented almost all of it on video, giving us a rare, very detailed look into the life of a musician - and person - in the early 90s.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's podcast features Jonathan Plum, a musical legend from the Seattle music scene. Self taught and a self starter, Jonathan climbed the local ranks of the Seattle music scene at the height of its popularity to ultimately become the right hand of one of Seattle's legendary producers. In the process of that experience, Jonathan met and recorded some of the most important musical works of our generation. Eventually, Jonathan found his way to the ownership role of London Bridge Studios after the Parashar brothers decided to retire. Since then, Jonathan has partnered up and continues to produce incredible new talent for the world to discover.
