Christian Zyp interviews Deborah Craig (director) about her documentary SALLY! You can see it Sunday May 18th, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Metro Cinema as part of the Rainbow Visions Film Fest.  SALLY! focuses on Sally Gearhart: lesbian, feminist, professor, and fantasy author who helped transform the world for gay people —but too few folks know of this hidden figure. (Did you know how much of an influence she was on Harvey Milk?) It's borderline criminal how unknown this firebrand of a woman is, and this phenomenal new documentary celebrates Sally's dynamism and complexity, as well as the collective (if chaotic) nature of revolutionary movements and their icons.https://www.sallygearhartfilm.com/FACEBOOK: SALLY! My guest this week, film maker David Marsh, is healing from the inside out.  From what? You'll need to listen to this episode to find out.   As he continues to heal, he's tried many things and realized through life experiences, the universe is even bigger than he originally perceived.   He's a story teller, made with love.  Along the way, he believes that so many things weave together to make up our perspective.   And as we go along, we should get comfortable trusting.   Because there really is no certainty. Ever.   So, when you're wondering what's next, try to let it unfold.  This has been one of my big lessons this year.    Letting it unfold, like everything on the planet, is easier said than done.  (When people say "easier said than done", remind them that, of course it's easier said than done.) What isn't?   But if we are to really supposed to figure out what this thing called life means, we must.  It's the only thing that we can really do.    Control is an illusion.   A few more tips from David: There's no way to mess up this life! Let go of control Connecting with your joy space is very important   And some questions to ask along your journey: What can't you imagine stopping? How will you get there?   He's overcome so much, and now he's simply adapting to life. We could learn a lot from him.   More about David: David Marsh is a Filmmaker and his latest film, Adapting To Dive, is available now on Amazon. Seven days before leaving to make a documentary with Diveheart, his son dies of a drug overdose. He decides to go anyway but doesn't tell anyone about his loss. He learns about healing and adapting from these adaptive divers. David loves to create documentaries and tell stories that connect to the heart. He loves to explore the human journey and document it through video. His latest film is the Winner of Feature Documentary in the 2022 Orlando International Film Festival. He has found that satisfaction in your career comes best when you are following your enthusiasm and creating things you're passionate about.    Current Documentaries online: ADAPTING TO DIVE (Amazon, TubiTV, LookhuTV) HEALING FROM THE INSIDE OUT (Amazon, TubiTV, XUMO) SOULBLAZE YOUR LIFE (TubiTV)   And check out my bestselling book: Peace, Possibilities, and Perspective: 8 Secrets to Serenity and Satisfaction in Your Life and Career https://2possibilityandbeyond.com/my-book

The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis

In Awe by Bruce

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2022

An elder C.S. Lewis looks back on his remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Chrsitian writer of the past century. The Most Reluctant Convert features award-winning actor Max McLean as the older Lewis and Nicholas Ralph - breakout star of PBS Materpiece's All Creatures Great and Small - as young Lewis. Beautifully filmed in and around Oxford, this engaging biopic follows the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia from the tragic death of his mother when he was just nine years- old, through his strained relationship with his father, to the nightmare of the trenches of World War I to Oxford University, where friends like J.R.R. Tolkien challenge his unbelief. Norman Stone Norman Stone began his professional career in television as the youngest producer/director to be working at the BBC, and soon established himself as a top film maker with his highly acclaimed film A Different Drummer about the blind and deaf Christian poet, Jack Clemo. Four years later, he created Shadowlands, the gripping film drama on the love and loss of C.S. Lewis, which earned two BAFTA awards, an International Emmy, and the coveted ‘Prague D'or' for Best Director. This film went on to be an award-winning stage play, as well as a Hollywood movie.Other dramas followed included Martin Luther – Heretic, starring Jonathan Pryce; New World with James Fox; The Vision starring Dirk Bogarde, Lee Remick and Helena Bonham-Carter, and the award-winning Burston Rebellion with Eileen Atkins and Bernard Hill. Stone was also asked to direct the internationally acclaimed CBS co-production Pied Piper, starring Peter O'Toole. He then directed two of the famous BBC Miss Marples films, starring the iconic Joan Hickson in the title role, and also, The Black Velvet Gown, which earned him his second International Emmy. Always interested in experimenting with new forms of filmic storytelling, Stone went on to create and direct The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, which starred Jeremy Irons and was nominated for a prestigious ACE Award in the category of Best International Drama. This experience led directly to Tales from the Mad House, an award-winning series of one-man dramas, featuring such stars as Jonathan Pryce, Dame Eileen Atkins, Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, James Cosmo and Helen Baxendale, before making the gritty, Glasgow feature film, Man Dancin' which collected more international awards.A string of new dramas followed, including C.S. Lewis - Beyond Narnia, Florence Nightingale, The Narnia Code and KJB - The Book that Changed the World (winner of The Templeton, Movie Guide, Epiphany Prize). In 2020, Norman completed a major Feature Documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor, The Final Fix, exploring a remarkably effective new treatment for drug addiction, and in 2021, during lockdown, he wrote and directed a new, creative drama on C.S. Lewis called The Most Reluctant Convert. This film was cinema-premiered in over 500 American cities in November 2021 and has already been seen in over 120 countries around the world.Norman is currently preparing a dramatically challenging feature film, Raising Hell, the true story of the battle to beat child prostitution in Victorian England, and is also developing an exciting, new TV action series, ROK, set in Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.Website: https://cslewismovie.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16QFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CSLewisMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fpa_theatre/IMDB: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16Q

In this special edition of the podcast we ventured out to the Fright Night Film Festival in Louisville, Ky. We shared conversations with five different guests and talked with them about their varying contributions and obsessions with the horror genre. My first guest is Santiago Cirillo. He is an actor, writer, and activist. During our discussion Santiago shares some incredibly heartfelt life experiences which led him to his current life trajectory. My second guest is an actor and is also the writer and director of Unlisted Owner. His name is Jed Brian. During our conversation we discuss the difficulties of being an independent film maker and the origins of Jed’s love for horror. The third guest on this cornucopia of horror wonders is Gil T. Wilson. He is a horror aficionado and self proclaimed Nerd of many things. Gil is a fellow podcaster and has his own show called The Nerd Up Podcast. Last but not least, I have two fellas who are kind of a package deal. They are both heavily involved in the production and creation of a series of films. The first is called Wicked One and the conclusion of the story is called Wicked Ones. The first person you’re going to hear from is my future BFF Roman Jossart. He is a writer, producer, editor, and one of the stars of the two films I mentioned. Our chat was an absolute blast and I am excited to have this fella in my friends group. The second person you’re going to get in this section of the show is Tory Jones. Tory is a writer, producer, director and jack of all trades in the film biz. He is the man behind the Wicked Ones film franchise. I thought our conversation was thought provoking and insightful. I’m hoping I can weasel my way into work with these two awesome dudes in the future. On this episode of Silent Presence, Rich Patricia revisits a story that he produced in 2008. As a child, he grew up in a household where he cared for a loved one who was suffering from serious mental health problems. He first noticed the changes when he was in 6th grade and they became very serious all throughout high school. In 2008, eleven years ago, he decided to produce a documentary film called Strive for Happiness. This film was his first attempt to open the dialogue about mental illness in our country and have others speak about their own experiences as caregivers for loved ones who also suffer from serious forms of mental illness. So, he decided for Mental Health Awareness Month to extract the audio from this documentary and replay it today as a podcast for all of you. "Strive For Happiness" is a documentary film about the lives of those who live with or care for loved ones who suffer from the many forms of severe mental illness. The director's hope is that this film raises awareness about the illness, removes some of the stigmas that still exist, and hopefully makes some change in policies that currently exist (funding, etc.) The film is documented by director, Richard M. Patricia as it takes a closer look at his life growing up in a household with a "loved one" that suffered from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. The interviews throughout the film reflect what his life was like growing up in a household dealing with mental illness. His hope is that this film will catch the attention of many family members throughout the country that know or lived with a loved one who suffers from mental illness. This film will also relate to anyone who cares for someone with an illness in general. Richard M. Patricia, of Phillipsburg, NJ, has won a prestigious Award of Merit in the Feature Documentary category from The Indie Fest out of California. The award was given for Patricia's heart-felt documentary film, Strive For Happiness, which is a film about the lives of those who live with or care for “loved ones” that suffer from a serious form of mental illness. This award will be added to his 1st place Telly Award which Patricia won in 2008. Strive For Happiness features exceptional interviews, information, visuals and sound. “It's very exciting to be a recipient of such an outstanding award and a part of a great organization like Indie Fest. I am so happy that my film has been able to affect so many people throughout the country.” 01:00 – Rich Patricia introduces his life living with a loved one who suffered from mental illness and his goal to find happiness 04:02 – Various guests talk about life with their loved one before the mental health problems 07:40 – Difficulties with mental illness as a caregiver 10:16 – Not knowing what to do for your loved one with mental health issues 12:04 – Never give up on loved one with mental illness 12:30 – Rich Patricia talks about growing up confused and frightened 13:52 – It's not their fault but am I making the right choices 15:33 – As a caregiver, mental illness is emotionally draining to deal with 17:54 – I just want normalcy in my life 19:50 – People in your life don't understand the illness and expect a lot from you. “Just fix it” they say. Get them help. Getting a loved one help is not as easy as you think 27:01 – The cost for mental health care is incredibly expensive while more and more programs are being cut 29:00 – I refinanced my home and used my 401K to support my loved one with mental illness 31:21 – I see how someone's life can tumble. Hint hint, it’s more than you’d think, and if you thought the Indie Spirits gave us one group of indie film darlings, this show represented another. Graham Norton was announced as the new host for this year’s BAFTA’s, and we reminisce over the MI: Fallout promotional campaign. Then we react to the first reactions to 1917, as it enters the Oscar Race as a possible contender for one of the technical categories, and we quote some friends of the show for their superlatives. We continue to get conflicting information on the Feature Documentary category. Soooo…. what else is new? The Documentary Award nominations from the Producers Guild of America give us some of the usual nominees, and then a few surprises. We take a moment to enjoy the Clio Entertainment Awards winners to celebrate the best marketing campaigns on the year, and then we discuss the second trailer for Honey Boy. To close the episode, we’re all about our Make The Case segment. We confirm a case against Where’d You Go Bernadette, which dropped on VOD this past week. Mike 1 drags a few first reactions from Also Mike regarding Knives Out, and then we dive into Frozen II. We talk about the fandom, the themes, and some other heart warming implications this new blockbuster has had on the Thanksgiving box office. Then we each make the case for & against the film as a potential Oscars nominee, even though we both know it’s gonna be there. To complete the segment, we do a quick Snubbable vs Unsnubbable about the candidacy of “Into The Unknown,” and how polarized people are about the new song from Adele Dazeem herself. He is currently celebrating a 50+ year career with a brand new album called "The Best of LIVe – 50 Years of Livingston Taylor Live". This album has 11 tracks from his upcoming box set of the same name featuring unreleased live performances spanning his career from 1969 through 2016. Over the course of the interview, Don outlines his approach to the art and business of documentary filmmaking, detailing his process for taking an idea from concept to completion, and securing theatrical distribution along the way.   Links from the show: Don’s production company - http://ktffilms.com Don on Twitter - https://twitter.com/IamDonHardy Don on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/don.hardy1 Pick of the litter trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW7GVR2c80k   For more content like this visit www.noamkroll.com

Meet Ali Weinstein, the director of a new documentary titled “Mermaids.” A feature documentary about the powerful allure of a universal myth, Mermaids immerses audiences in a world where fantasies come to life. Today we’re doing something a little bit different. We’re going to keep the conversation in-house, and talk with Ted Balaker, the co-founder of Korchula Productions. You’ve heard us talk a lot about our feature documentary Can We Take a Joke?, and we thought that for this final episode of our first season, we’d give you a little behind-the-scenes look at the making of the documentary and, more pertinent to the theme of this podcast, the distribution plan and the execution of that plan. Ted was the director of this film, and we just thought hearing that about that experience in our own words might be useful to those of you out there who are starting or even in the middle of your own projects. Remember, you can keep track of all Korchula’s latest projects, including the Can We Take a Joke, by following us on Twitter and Facebook and at Korchula Productions dot com.
