The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels written by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialized in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely in Dartmoor, Devon, in England's West Country and follows Holmes and Watson investigating the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his apparent death in "The Final Problem", and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character's eventual revival. One of the most famous stories ever written, in 2003, the book was listed as number 128 of 200 on the BBC's poll of the UK's "best-loved novel". Fun Facts Bertram Fletcher Robinson was a writer who was a friend of Doyle's. Shortly after his return from the Boer War, Robinson invited Doyle to visit him at Ippleton in Devonshire. Supposedly, Robinson had been working on a story about the moor based on a 17th century legend with a demon hound. Doyle who had killed off Sherlock Holmes in “The Final Problem” was faced with a public outcry to produce more Holmes stories and quickly. There is speculation that Doyle may have tried to adapt Robinson's story into a tale of Sherlock Holmes and that would explain why the great detective appears so little in the story. In the late Fifties, Doyle's son responded to such charges by stating: “Fletcher Robinson wrote not one word of the story. He refused my father's offer to collaborate and retired at an early stage of the project.” What all the sources agree on is that Doyle did indeed take a coach ride with Robinson over the moor to get the atmosphere of the place while Robinson recounted the story of Sir Richard Cabell, Lord of the Manor of Brooke. Lord Cabell was a man of well known evil repute. He was a very jealous man and one night he viciously accused his wife of having an affair. Lady Cabell denied it. Enraged, Cabell beat her mercilessly. Somehow, she was able to break away from him and ran from the house, hoping to escape in the surrounding moors. The moors were a cold, desolate place. Lord Cabell caught up to her and in his enraged state killed her with one of his hunting knives. Suddenly, a huge hound appeared. It was Lady Cabell's own faithful dog and it had followed the couple onto the moors. Seeing his mistress killed, the hound savagely attacked Cabell and after a fierce struggle, slaughtered the evil man. However, the hound itself had been fatally wounded by Lord Cabell's knife and in the morning the villagers found the poor animal lying dead beside his slain mistress. According to local legend, the ghost of Lady Cabell's hound still roams the moors on the nights of the full moon, howling mournfully for its dead mistress. Another legend claims that on the night of Lord Cabell's death, black hounds breathing fire and smoke raced over nearby Dartmoor and howled around his manor house. Lord Cabell's death took place in 1677. A small pagoda-like building called “The Sepulchre” was put over his grave to prevent him from returning to cause even more evil. “It is said that he will gnaw your finger if you venture to insert it in the keyhole of the locked door,” wrote the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ang189/support

A fiber artist finds inspiration in WV scenery. And follow the Mercer County Candy Cane Trail for a chance to win prizes…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS – After rebranding seven months ago, the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center has continued its mission of supporting both workers and businesses throughout the state by providing training, job placement and more. MAMC Director Derek Scarbro said the manufacturing industry is experiencing a solid resurgence. “There are thousands of manufacturing jobs available in West Virginia both now and on the horizon with companies expanding and operations coming to West Virginia. So, there is great opportunity for a lot of good-paying, family-supporting jobs, and we're trying to rise to the challenge and help more West Virginians take advantage of that opportunity and help these companies grow,” he said. Earlier this month, the MAMC (formerly the Robert C. Byrd Institute) was awarded nearly $1 million in funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission to implement its Systems Maintenance, Automation and Robotics Technology Program in Cabell and Mason counties. Scarbro said he believes the SMART Program will be a game changer. “We heard from 26 manufacturers just in the immediate vicinity of Cabell County and the tri-state part of West Virginia who had a specific need for these skill sets like maintaining automated production lines, which are often some of the most highly paid, highly skilled jobs outside of management at many of these factories.” Read more: https://www.wvnews.com/news/wvnews/marshall-advanced-manufacturing-center-continues-mission-of-west-virginia-workforce-development/article_acc0b788-856e-11ee-ae7d-c7e0ef551d34.html #2 – From WV LIVING – Fiber artist Mary Roy first tried hand embroidery in 2019 as a creative outlet to cope with the symptoms of her obsessive-compulsive disorder and the stress of her corporate job. She's been learning and stitching ever since. In 2020, she established her business, Appalachian Moon, which she rebranded earlier this year to Mary Stitches. Roy has been voted a 2021 “Best New Artist” runner-up by readers of WV Living magazine, an Emerging Artist Fellow by Tamarack Foundation for the Arts and an Artist-in-Residence at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Most of Roy's pieces are 8-inch hoops and take 25 to 30 hours to complete, depending on complexity. They are also thoroughly researched, which adds authenticity and helps Roy capture tiny details. Her three-layer New River Gorge hoop—one of her favorites—features the bridge, river, surrounding greenery, and female whitewater rafters. “It was fun to play with the different colors and textures, and the layering allowed me to create something with more movement and dimension,” Roy says. It's been a while since true crime writer Ellison Oswalt had a bestseller, and the strain is starting to show on Ellison, his wife Tracy, and their kids Trevor and Ashley. Local law enforcement isn't keen on him, either, as his last few books didn't cast them in too fond a light. So Ellison and his family take up residence in a modest Pennsylvania ranch house with something of a history – something we learn when we watch as a family is lynched in the house's back yard. Unfortunately, this may be his last chance at the big time, so Ellison neglects to inform Tracy of this, and when things start going bump in the night, and the home movies left behind reveal ominous clues about a killer's identity, Ellison finds himself turning from the hunter to the hunted. A helpful deputy steps in to assist, as well as a professor of the occult, but by the time they reveal their own information, the situation has devolved from strange… to sinister. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Sept. 3 GreenPower Motor Company revolutionizes the Type A school bus…15 counties are added to West Virginia's Communities in Schools program… and swing into an unforgettable musical adventure when the Spider-man concert experience comes to Charleston…on today's daily304. #1 – From SCHOOL BUS FLEET – Some manufacturers of the Type A school bus -- workhorse of the special-needs transportation system -- have struggled to meet production demand due to shortages of the chassis used to build the buses. Fraser Atkinson, CEO of GreenPower Motor Company, noted that his company hasn't been directly affected by the chassis shortage when it comes to production of the Type A Nano BEAST, because it is built on GreenPower's EV Star Cab and chassis, making them their own chassis supplier. “What sets GreenPower apart is that all of our vehicles are purpose-built to be battery-powered with zero-emissions,” Atkinson said. GreenPower Motor Co. operates a manufacturing facility in South Charleston. “We constantly look for new technologies and ways to improve our vehicles for our customers,” he said. “Most recently, we deployed a version of the Nano BEAST that serves the needs of special education students and children with disabilities by including wheelchair lifts and securements while featuring a flat floor to ensure excellent accessibility.” Read more: https://www.schoolbusfleet.com/10205313/revolutionizing-the-ride-a-closer-look-at-innovating-type-a-school-buses #2 – From WOAY-TV – Schools in 15 new counties are being added to West Virginia's Communities in Schools program. Communities in Schools build community partnerships and bring resources into schools to prevent student dropout and increase graduation rates, according to State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “Communities In Schools has had a life-changing impact on thousands of students in our state,” Blatt said. “The relationships between site coordinators, schools, students, and families are at the core of this success. These students need support and structures that help them recover from setbacks and regain the confidence to believe they can do great things. Communities in Schools is essential to opening options and pathways for those needing hope and a vision for their future.” The new counties are Barbour, Boone, Cabell, Doddridge, Hancock, Jefferson, Marion, Mason, Mineral, Monongalia, Ohio, Pocahontas, Putnam, Roane, Tucker, Tyler, Wetzel, Wirt, and Wood. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, July 24 Filmmaker Tijah Bumgarner shares her passion for telling WV's stories…Export businesses, learn how you can adapt to the changes coming with the European Green Deal…and the WV SBDC opens a new office in Huntington…on today's daily304. #1 – From SHINE ON, WV – Filmmaker Tijah Bumgarner has always been drawn to telling Appalachian stories in her documentary and narrative projects. She returned to West Virginia to continue making her films while teaching the next generation of West Virginia filmmakers at Marshall University, changing the game for indie film in Huntington. Watch the interview on YouTube and subscribe to the Shine On, WV channel for more features on West Virginia artists. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhGO2wANVmw #2 – From WV ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – The European Union has been working on a new economic policy called the European Green Deal that will make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. This means that the EU wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by the mid-century. But what does that mean for businesses here in West Virginia? Businesses need to be aware of the changes and make sure they are prepared to comply with new regulations if they hope to be well-positioned to succeed in the European market. We believe knowledge is key to being a successful exporter and that having an export plan reduces the likelihood of you making hasty or reactionary decisions. So, prepare for new regulations in Europe now by documenting your product's components and researching their origins. You should also start conversations with your engineers and company leadership to find ways to improve product sustainability and recyclability, reduce your manufacturing carbon footprint and mitigate associated costs. The downtown location will help entrepreneurs and business owners in the community by offering practical information to help grow local business, primarily covering Cabell, Mason Lincoln, and Wayne counties. "The Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce is excited to have the West Virginia Small Business Development Center as our new neighbor. The Chamber and SBDC have shared missions of cultivating a thriving business community that drives economic growth and innovation so I think it is a natural fit,” said Tricia Ball, President & CEO of the Huntington Chamber. “It is my hope that being located in the same building will allow us to more closely partner on providing aspiring entrepreneurs and small businesses with the technical assistance, resources, and connections they need to succeed.” Read more: https://wvsbdc.com/wv-sbdcs-huntington-center-relocates/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. This week, we're sharing a conversation with Rose and Crystal, two comrades involved in the struggle against the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a 304 mile, 41 inch in diameter liquified so-called natural gas pipeline with a possible 75 mile extension crossing many delicate waterways, slopes and communities across Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. This project has been off and on under construction since 2018 and was recently forced through at a Federal level as part of the debt ceiling deal by the Biden administration and Democrats. For the hour we talk about the project, the land and water it threatens, the history of resistance and how to get involved in stopping this mess. Just a headsup, there are some audio quality issues throughout the conversation with both guests, so if you have trouble hearing consider checking out the upcoming transcript or meanwhile watching on youtube with the subtitles on. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the thought-provoking documentary "Disability on the Spectrum," created by local artist Priya Ray. The film sheds light on the experiences and perspectives of disabled individuals, fostering greater understanding and empathy within our community. Rashid's Continued Denial of Cancer Treatment Check our show notes for Rashid's message, but as noted last week, incarcerated revolutionary of the Intercommunal Black Panther Party, Kevin Rashid Johnson, is continuing to be denied his rounds of cancert treatment for prostate cancer and has been shoved in a solitary confinement cell without working lights. In the show notes and at our website you'll also find contacts for prison officials in Virginia who need pressure applied to get Rashid the medical treatment he needs, outside of the dungeon they've stuck him in. Comrades: This is Rashid. I need all possible SUSTAINED and immediate support. Here is a statement of my situation. OFFICIALS DEVISE TO STOP MY CANCER TREATMENT AND BLOCK MY COURT ACCESS (2023) By Kevin "Rashid" Johnson I have been going out daily since early April 2023 for radiation treatment at the Medical College of Virginia - a total of 40 treatments - which is ongoing. On 6-29-23 upon returning to the prison from the hospital I was thrown in solitary confinement without explanation, where I remain, without any property including all my legal property. I was put in cells without working lights, where I remain. After constant complaints all I'm being told is I am under investigation, but not by prison investigators. I spoke with a prison investigator, a Lieutenant Spencer, on July 1 when she delivered me legal mail, asking about my status and access to my legal property. She informed me, while her body camera was recording, that I am under investigation by other state prison investigators and the prison was not withholding my legal property. She said any supervisor could get my property for me which was in the property department. Despite this everyone refuses to deliver my belongings and I have been kept in an empty cell ever since. This despite that the VDOC is under court orders to not interfere with my access to and use of my legal property and I have numerous court deadlines and a pending federal civil trial in one of my lawsuits. On 6-30-23 officials refused to allow me to attend my cancer treatment. My numerous written emergency complaints about this went unanswered and unprocessed. On 7-3-23 after days in an empty cell without my things I declined to go for my treatment that one day to try and call the courts to explain and seek intervention. Officials including the warden and assistant warden refused me a legal call and are now refusing all my future cancer treatments. The entire claim to have me under investigation is facially invalid and illegal. As any legal authority recognizes, law enforcement officials must perform investigations consistent with the search and seizure provisions of the 4th Amendment. And any "unlawful search or seizures" renders any evidence gathered therefrom illegal. Both the seizures and searches of me and my property have been unlawful from the outset. My belongings, my legal property in particular was taken and searched outside my presence, which is illegal. Prison officials may only open our legal mail and search our legal property in our presence. That is constitutional law. Here in Virginia we may only be removed from General population and put in solitary if written notice is given within 24 hours. I received no such notice. Dr. Sonia Cabell, Associate Professor at Florida State University, shares the importance of both oral language and content knowledge instruction. Why? Oral language skills underlie our ability to comprehend text. At the same time, the knowledge we bring to a text is THE key determinant on how much we understand that text. This episode speaks to the entirety of the reading rope!
