In this Film Ireland podcast, in partnership with access>CINEMA, Gemma Creagh talks to Niels Arden Oplev, Writer/Director of 'Rose', which is screening currently screening throughout Ireland, as well as access>CINEMA's Special Projects Officer Stephen McNeice. Set in the late '90s, Ellen and her new husband Van decide to tak e Ellen's older sister Inger on a bus trip to Paris where Inger once lived. Inger is schizophrenic, and lives in a care home coddled by her overprotective mother. Ellen sees their holiday as an opportunity to reconnect, and to find out if Inger might be able to live more independently. Inger herself has a hidden agenda for the trip – hoping to track down a lost love. 'Rose' is based on director Niels Arden Oplev's own family history and is full of feeling. Sofie Gråbøl's performance is the film's highlight. She inhabits Inger, bringing her to life and presenting all her complications, impulses and anxiety with grace. https://programme.accesscinema.ie/movie/rose-1 https://www.accesscinema.ie/ https://filmireland.net/
This week, we continue our journey into the doldrums of Colin's middle period with a look at Dead Man Down, a muddled attempt by original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev to inject European art film flair into the DTV crime thriller mold. We discuss the film's incoherent plotting and tone, once again tackle the question of Colin Farrell in action hero mode, and break down co-star Noomi Rapace's odd run as a failed Hollywood leading lady. Plus, because you try talking about this movie, we get very loopy and really just drift off into whatever tangents cross our minds. But, like, more so than usual. Cole wants Tommy Wirkola to chill. Connor debuts his Justin Timberlake impression. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Award winning director Niels Arden Oplev's latest film, ROSE, takes place over the course of an eventful week that focuses on the depth of the relationship between two sisters, Inger and Ellen, and how their connection will be tested on a highly anticipated coach trip to Paris. When Inger announces her struggles with mental health to the group, the sisters are faced with pity from some and downright discrimination from others. On arrival in Paris, it soon becomes clear that Inger has a hidden agenda concerning a figure from her past, ultimately involving the entire group in her hunt for answers. The film stars Sofie Gråbøl (star of the hit Danish drama series, “The Killing”) and Lena Maria Christensen. ROSE is a film about love and care for each other, in spite of our differences, as much as it is a film about not judging a book by its cover. After its release in Denmark, ROSE received a number of nominations and accolades from the Danish Film Association and Denmark's Bodil Awards, including Best Actress at the Bodil Awards and Best Supporting Actress at both the Bodil Awards and Danish Film Association Awards. Director and writer Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With the Dragon, We Shall Overcome) joins us for a conversation on how a personal inspiration for making ROSE helped him meet the challenge of creating an empathetic and entertaining film about mental illness, and why securing the acting duo Sofie Gråbøl (“Forbrydelsen”/”The Killing”) and Lena Maria Christensen (The Legacy) was crucial to critical and commercial success of the film. There are so many personal films out there from many seasoned filmmakers. Danish writer/director Niels Arden Oplev has made a film that is very close to his heart, and invited audiences in to learn and explore some hard to understand subjects. Rose is both touching and heavy, but always light and airy. Definitely check it out the first second you can. But, while we had Niels with us, we also had to talk about his original adaptation of Stieg Larsson's, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We discuss what goes into adapting such a lauded work of art and the issues with its not so publicized name change. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/overduerentals/support

Bestselling author and award-winning screenwriter, Dwain Worrell, spoke to me about making the move from the writers' room to the cafe, the art and science of suspense, and his debut novel ANDRONE. His bestselling debut novel, Androne, is described as a “... near future … highly cinematic and propulsive story [centered] around a terrifying event called the Ninety-Nine, where all major military installations on Earth [are] eviscerated, heralding humanity's start of a war with an unknown enemy.” Niels Arden Oplev, Director of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo called the book “A crazy-cool ride into the unknown …. [Androne] reads like a high-end videogame on steroids with a destiny of Shakespearean magnitude.” Publishers Weekly wrote, “... taut intrigue … reels readers into a thrilling yet thoughtful narrative about the futility of war and the cost of doing the right thing…” [Discover The Writer Files Extra: Get 'The Writer Files' Podcast Delivered Straight to Your Inbox at writerfiles.fm] [If you're a fan of The Writer Files, please click FOLLOW to automatically see new interviews. **CONTENT WARNING: In order to discuss the events of both films, we discuss scenes of sexual violence** Back for a bonus episode, due to popular demand we've done what none of you should probably attempt and that is watching both adaptations of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - back-to-back. The 2009 film from Niels Arden Oplev marked the arrival of Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, both of whom would go on to fairly successful Hollywood careers. Its a relatively faithful adaptation of the novel, albeit on a budget that only just elevates it above its TV movie roots. Just a couple of years later, the same story got the Hollywood treatment under the stewardship of David Fincher. With a budget close to $100m and James Bond in the lead, surely this had to smooth off some of the book's rough edges in order to see a wide release, right? Catherine's read the books, Neal and Ben haven't. So how will that affect their opinions of these two films, which share so much in terms of narrative, but are wildly different in style and approach? Pat and Jeff are excited to welcome their first ever guest to the podcast, Jared McLean! Jared comes on to talk about Niels Arden Oplev's 2013 action-ish movie, Dead Man Down. Opinions differ, and the merit of Colin Farrell as a leading man is discussed. Ultimately, it's agreed upon that the movie is a rip-off of Everybody Loves Raymond, and not as good as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

We live in an era of remakes and sequels. With that mind, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) realized there were several films they've seen and loved that were, in fact, remakes of older movies. Thus, the theme for August became Originals! That is to say movies that have been remade that either Jonathan or Corey hasn't seen the source material but has seen the remake. This required a bit of research to pick the movies for this month, but the two did a great job of finding some real classics they have never seen. August will have five episodes so Corey got to pick three movies to Jonathan's two. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 4 - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) Jonathan really enjoyed David Fincher's 2011 remake The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and has been determined to watch the original films. It only makes sense to start with Swedish film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) directed by Niels Arden Oplev and it stars Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, and Ewa Fröling. If you aren't familiar with the story it features "A journalist is aided by a young female hacker in his search for the killer of a woman who has been dead for forty years." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

A Vakfolt versus második évadjának fináléjában a svéd Män som hatar kvinnor (A tetovált lány, 2009) és a The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (A tetovált lány, 2011) verseng, hogy kiderüljön, melyikük a jobban sikerült adaptációja Stieg Larsson eredeti regényének. Vendégünk a megrögzött Rooney Mara- és tetováltlány-rajongó CyClotronic. Eldönti-e a két tetováltlányos film az örök vitát, hogy mi értelme újra leforgatni valamit, amit egyszer már elkészítettek? Miért nyúlt vajon a témához pont David Fincher? "Whatever it is that you've been through, you don't have to tell me. I'm just glad you're here." With the international success of Stieg Larsson's novel “Men Who Hate Women” and its sequels, it was inevitable that a cinematic version would be made. The three films that make up Larsson's ‘Millennium Trilogy' were made back to back and were all released in Sweden in 2009 before making their way around the world to financial and critical success. The first film, Niels Arden Oplev's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, introduced the world cinematically to both Lisbeth Salander and the actress who portrayed her – Noomie Rapace. Her work to bring Salander to life is largely what makes this trilogy stand out as one worth talking about. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off a series about the three films in the Millennium Trilogy with Oplev's 2009 film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We talk about the story and why it largely works so well – Lisbeth Salander. We look at Rapace as Salander and how well she does with Michael Nyqvist playing the man who brings her in to help him solve this case. We look at what Oplev does here cinematically and make some comparisons with the 2011 David Fincher remake. We chat about some of the violence with the story and debate what it does for the story itself. And we touch on some of the differences between the original cut and the extended TV cuts. It's a dark film but certainly one worth watching. We love the mystery presented here, but more importantly, we love that this film gave us Noomi Rapace. We have a great time talking about this movie, so check it out then tune in! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Back in the 1980’s, director Joel Schumacher was at the top of his game. With St. Elmo’s Fire and The Lost Boys, he had not only become a Hollywood talent, but he was able to bring movies to cinemas that identified with young people. Whether moviegoers knew it, they began to flock to his films. The arrival of 1990 his latest film, Flatliners, continued the trend. With its cast of bratpack or hip actors, the film was a hit. Starring Keifer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, and Julia Roberts, the film immediately attracted the attention of critics and audiences alike. A group of med students, led by the charismatic Nelson Wright, head to the basement of their university to try to find if the afterlife actually exists. One by one, the five begin to perform self induced deaths, or flatlining, before being revived after a few minutes. To there shock, indeed they see what is across the beyond. But unfortunately for each, something came back with them. The movie was a big success and continued the run of the three main leads and the director. Now in 2017, a remake has been released directed by Niels Arden Oplev (behind The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and starring Ellen Page and Nina Dobrev. Dark Discussions takes a look at the original cult classic, its legacy, and the new adaption. With John Wilson, Nijinsky is known as one of the greatest dancers and most experimental choreographers of the 20th century, but his career was curtailed by mental illness. Lucy Moore has written the first English language biography of Nijinsky for more than 30 years, and she discusses the myths which surround him, his complex relationship with the impresario Diaghilev, and the possible reasons for his breakdown and inability to work again. More from the Cultural Exchange project, in which 75 leading creative minds share their passion for a book, film, poem, piece of music or other work of art: tonight Oscar-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci nominates Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita. Dead Man Down is the first Hollywood film from Niels Arden Oplev, the Danish director of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As excited as we are to see David Fincher's adaptation of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," we know the Swedes did it first. Before seeing what Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara do with Stieg Larsson's international bestseller, we decided to take in Niels Arden Oplev's interpretation, starring Mikael Blomkvist and Noomi Rapace. Although we've not read the books (we plan to!), we were curious whether the well-received Swedish version leaves any room for an American remake.
An interview with NIELS ARDEN OPLEV the director of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - a mystery thriller based on Stieg Larsson's international best selling novel about a disgraced journalist and a troubled young female computer hacker who investigate the mysterious disappearance of an industrialist's niece.
