This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 2026 edition of the New York Asian Film Festival with Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho on the tenth anniversary of the film's release, presented on this particular evening in a new 4K restoration. Ten years later, Train to Busan is still a monster with an angry engine. Yeon Sang-ho's breakout transforms a zombie outbreak aboard the KTX into one of the great modern action-horror rides: brutal, sentimental, and made for packed movie theaters. Gong Yoo plays a self-absorbed, divorced fund manager taking his young daughter to Busan for her birthday. Before they leave Seoul, the outbreak reaches the station, a bitten passenger makes it onto the train, and the trip becomes a car-by-car fight for survival, with fear spreading almost as fast as the virus. Ma Dong-seok became an international fan favorite here as the passenger everyone wanted on their side.

Sarah and I are still at it for the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. Healing is pain, as Sarah keeps reminding me, but we're still getting out to movies. On July 29th we actually split up because two interesting films were screening at the same time. Sarah decided to go full intellectual and catch the documentary. I went for the zombies-in-a-mall option. Both were worth talking about. First up is Colony, the latest from Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan). A bioterrorist unleashes a fungal-style zombie virus inside a big Seoul office-mall complex that gets locked down. The infected have a hive mind and keep evolving, which gives the usual siege setup some fresh wrinkles. Gianna Jun plays a sharp professor who's basically the Ripley of the piece — competent, figuring things out on the fly, holding it together. It's action-packed, loaded with practical effects, and looks more expensive than it likely was. At just over two hours it does throw in a few extra speed bumps that maybe weren't needed, but if you like high-octane zombie movies in the 28 Days Later vein, this is an easy recommendation. Sarah, meanwhile, saw Black Zombie, a Canadian-Haitian co-production documentary about the actual origins of the zombie. It starts with Haitian voodoo culture and the plantation history, then tracks how the concept mutated through early cinema (White Zombie), Romero, and into the modern biochemical versions we know today. It also digs into how Western pop culture has pretty thoroughly misrepresented and vilified voodoo along the way. Slash from Guns N' Roses even shows up as one of the talking heads. Educational, well-made, and especially interesting if you've ever wondered why “zombie” can mean so many different things depending on the movie. Bilingual and an easy watch for anyone who likes docs about horror genres. Two very different films about zombies, both solid. We'll keep going as long as the festival (and Sarah's leg) allows. Byrd, Kevin and Lux return to discuss the recent Netflix mini series, Human Vapor, a reimagining of Toho's classic 1960 "mutant" film from director Shinzo Katayama (Gannibal, Missing) and writer/producer/showrunner Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan, Parasyte: The Grey).  This version opts for a brand new story, although it still follows a man who has gained the ability to transform into gas and uses his powers to carry out a murder spree.  We follow detective Kenji and reporter Kyoko as they uncover secrets involving unethical science, classism, yakuza, and really bad parents.  How did we feel about this radical reinterpretation?  Listen and find out!  But first, we give our tributes to the late Sam Neil and Kaylee Hottle.  Relax and enjoy the conversation!

The 30th Fantasia International Film Festival, July 16 – August 2, in Montreal, is careening towards us, featuring what looks to be an excellent lineup of movies.      This week- two movies about women being stigmatized, in very different ways, by societal views.     Ben's life is going pretty well. He has a great girlfriend who is ready to throw her life plans away to stay by his side, he is the star of his high school swim team, recruiters are fighting over a chance to see his freestyle, and everyone has totally forgotten that not long ago he was a drug dealing sociopath. When he almost runs over new transfer student Madison everything begins to spin out of control. Turns out, she is a massive- Swimfan.     While supervising a documentary interview with his father, a celebrated blind artisanal seal maker, Dong-hwan learns the remains of his mother were found at a construction site. After a strange confrontation at the funeral, and with the help of the documentary producer Su-jin, Dong-hwan decides to learn the truth of what happened to his mother four decades ago. Yeon Sang-ho writes and directs a mystery based on his own graphic novel- The Ugly [얼굴, literally Face].     All that plus Dave mixes concrete, Tyler get bullied, Kevin attempts to project across the digital void and Craig wonders about the Michael Douglas of it all. Kijk dan liever nog een keertje Die Hard, een film die soort van aangehaald wordt in deze, maar oneindig veel beter is. On the twenty-fourth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016), screenplay from Park Joo-suk and Yeon Sang-ho, the film is directed by Yeon Sang-ho.  A busy, divorced fund manager, Seok-woo, reluctantly agrees to take his young daughter, Su-an, on the KTX bullet train from Seoul to Busan for her birthday, unaware that a deadly zombie virus has just begun rapidly spreading across the country.  Just after the train departs, an infected passenger boards and quickly turns, unleashing a chaotic outbreak among the confined passengers who must now fight their way through the narrow train cars to survive.  As the high-speed train races toward the supposed safety of Busan, Seok-woo and a small group of survivors are forced to battle the relentless hordes while also confronting the worst of human selfishness among the remaining uninfected.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 58 m, is unrated  (but let's say R) and we caught the film on the Hoopla app, but you can watch the film on Netflix and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Never Did It: A podcast for folks who like movies but haven't seen them all yet. This week, we take a short trip back to 2016. And crafting a sequel that's less an immediate sequel but more of a story in the same universe taking place four years after the original sounded intriguing. But a bigger budget and expanded scope doesn't always mean better. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Train to Busan series with a conversation about Yeon Sang-ho's 2020 film Peninsula.Here's a hint at what we talk about.The film starts with a great premise. We're following two survivors, now living in Hong Kong four years after South Korea was taken over by zombies, as they're recruited by criminals to return to the country and find a truck full of money. Once they get there, however, things start shifting in ways that bring the story down. The plot contains many elements that are there simply for convenience. Even their own zombie rules, established in the last film and (mostly) adhered to, seem to be used as needed. With all of that, it seems like things aren't great but passable for a genre zombie film.Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. We're introduced to some young daughters who drive like Dominic Toretto in sequences that are on par with video game action. We get the rogue militia catching survivors and running their own zombie survival games. The characters in the first film were archetypes, but largely felt human. Here, they feel like poorly written and performed video game characters. We do have a few that stand out and pique our interest. Our protagonist, for one, is easy to enjoy and watch go through this story. The political leader of the militia makes for an interesting psychological study, along with his sidekick. Even the mom who survived the attacks and made it this far with her daughters and father makes for an interesting story.Unfortunately, they're all saddled with a sloppy story and weak effects that just makes the whole thing a struggle. Still, it's awfully fun to talk about. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our short series looking at the Train to Busan films, starting with Yeon's 2016 film Train to Busan. Here's a hint at what we talk about.First off, we love zombie movies so this is an easy one to talk about, particularly because Yeon gets so much right. With perfect action set pieces, the claustrophobia of being trapped in a zombie-filled train, and interpersonal and class conflicts brewing throughout, what starts as the simple story of a workaholic father taking his daughter to visit her mother in Busan becomes a gripping, heart-wrenching and terrifying experience that never lets up. Yeon Sang-ho's live-action directorial debut ramps up the tension and terror in equal measure, but also gives us characters we care about and root for, as fatherhood is placed front and centre. Train week starts with a discussion of the Top 5 Dinner scenes because of course and because we've compiled a list of Top 5 Trains already. Fund manager and uninvolved father Seok-Woo (Gong Yoo) must escort his daughter Soo-An back to Busan during the middle of a zombie outbreak and like most great zombie movies this one tells us more about the people who are left behind which includes father-to-be Sang-Hwa (Ma Dong-Seok), expectant mother Jung Yu-mi (Seong-kyeong), teenage lovers Min and Kim and selfish executive Yong-Suk. With so many relationships to keep track of and the pace amplified by the DIE HARD or SPEED type element of the setting, sometimes the characters can seem a little stock but also sometimes subtlety can go fuck itself. Whilst TRAIN occasionally leans into melodrama, virtually every single one of the sacrifices, of which there are a surprising many, feels earned. A strong performance from the likeable Dong-Seok, themes about immigration and how populations are controlled by fear, accomplished visual effects and an inventive script which sees our knowledge of the zombie threat constantly evolving combine to make this a must see and not just for fans of the genre. It seems incredible that we've never tackled Thomas The Tank Engine but here we are, finally checking out THOMAS & FRIENDS. Ringo Starr lives on the island of Sodor along with the titular steam engine and his various trainyard counterparts. One of the main things I remember about this universe is that all the characters were, without exception, awful. Gordon was an arrogant, pompous blowhard who looked down on the other engines, James was rude, proud, and vain, Percy was infantile and a worrywart, Thomas was a classic narcissist and Harold the Helicopter had a fungal nail infection and used to steal underwear. In this episode Thomas is fat-shamed, Gordon plays a terrifying prank on him then the narrator effectively tells us 'never challenge authority'. Quite something. Things to expect during this discussion: innuendo, theme music but not the one you're thinking of, discussions of the levels of sentience and/or freewill of the engines, the nightmarish uncanny valley faces of the original series models and Thomas's scrapyard fate.
