There is a new medical clinic in town focused on a specific — and pressing — issue: evaluations for asylum seekers to support their cases to remain in Minnesota. That means clinicians will work specifically with people in the metro who are going through the process of proving to the United States government that their home country is no longer safe for them to stay. A medical evaluation could make all the difference in those cases. MPR News host Nina Moini spoke with Dr. Nathan Bertelsen about the clinic, which would be the first of its kind in Minnesota. Dr. Bertelsen worked closely with the Center for Victims of Torture to establish the clinic.

Recent guest Bob Litterman spoke highly of Greg and his work at the Climate Leadership Council, a rare bipartisan effort on climate. He put us in touch. In the meantime, I was curious about a climate group started by Secretaries of State James A. Baker and George P. Shultz along with Ted Halstead. But they and other prominent Republicans published The Conservative Case for Carbon Dividends.Greg is CLC's CEO, leading that project on the ground working with politicians. If you're curious how it can work, he explains it in our conversation. You'll hear my long-standing concern that people and organizations who focus on climate and greenhouse gases end up increasing other problems. He sees in some areas that if you solve part of the problem you increase it in other areas, like squeezing a balloon, as he puts it, or whack-a-mole, as I do, but doesn't speak about that problem in focusing only on carbon.I also didn't get to ask him about the fourth pillar of the case: "significant regulatory simplification." Could it open the door for more pollution and a net lowering of Earth's ability to sustain life?Still, listen and hear directly from him on the bipartisan effort he's leading. The Climate Leadership CouncilAmericans for Carbon Dividends Hosted on Acast. Their platform automatically gets clients reimbursed by their insurance after every session. Just by billing your clients through Thrizer, you can potentially save them hundreds every month, with no extra work on your end. Every time you bill a client through Thrizer, an insurance claim is automatically generated and sent directly to the client's insurance. From there, Thrizer provides concierge support to ensure clients get their reimbursement quickly, directly into their bank account. By eliminating reimbursement by check, confusion around benefits, and obscurity with reimbursement status, they allow your clients to focus on what actually matters rather than worrying about their money. It is very quick to get set up and it works great in completement with EHR systems. Their team is super helpful and responsive, and the founder is actually a long-time therapy client who grew frustrated with his reimbursement times The best part is you don't need to give up your rate. They charge a standard 3% payment processing fee! Thrizer lets you become more accessible while remaining in complete control of your practice. I do!

Olga Bertelsen's In the Labyrinth of the KGB: Ukraine's Intelligentsia in the 1960s-1970s (Lexington Books, 2022) focuses on the generation of the sixties and seventies in Kharkiv, Soviet Ukraine, a milieu of writers who lived through the Thaw and the processes of de-Stalinization and re-Stalinization. Special attention is paid to KGB operations against what came to be known as the dissident milieu, and the interaction of Ukrainians, Jews, and Russians in the movement, their persona friendships, formal and informal interactions, and the ways they dealt with repression and arrests. This study demonstrates that the KGB unintentionally facilitated the transnational and intercultural links among the Kharkiv multi-ethnic community of writers and their mutual enrichment. Post-Khrushchev Kharkiv is analyzed as a political space and a place of state violence aimed at combating Ukrainian nationalism and Zionism, two major targets in the 1960s-1970s. Despite their various cultural and social backgrounds, the Kharkiv literati might be identified as a distinct bohemian group possessing shared aesthetic and political values that emerged as the result of de-Stalinization under Khrushchev. Archival documents, diaries, and memoirs suggest that the 1960s-1970s was a period of intense KGB operations, "active measures" designed to disrupt a community of intellectuals and to fragment friendships, bonds, and support among Ukrainians, Russians, and Jews along ethnic lines domestically and abroad. Bertelsen shows that, in the face of intense KGB operations, Kharkivite writers and intellectuals attempted to survive in the state's “labyrinth” with their integrity, creativity, and human relationships intact. This book sheds light on the history of Soviet intelligence tactics and the creative intelligentsia, and helps explain the legacies of Soviet/Russian state violence that are erupting once more in Ukraine.

This episode features an interview with Orchid Bertelsen. Orchid is the Chief Operating Officer at Common Thread Collective, an eCommerce growth agency. In this episode, Orchid talks about the three ways to grow, developing strategic partners, and how to do it all without losing the soul of your brand.Quotes*”There's no easier audience to sell to than people who have already bought from you, know that you exist, and like the product. And so if you want to sell more to your existing customer base, you can increase their lifetime value, either through your core offering and doing a subscription service, or you can continue to launch new products that are complementary to whatever you're selling.” *”There are some products that people just want to experience in person. There is a certain way to expand into the brick and mortar experience while still utilizing and connecting the digital experience to it, whether it's something simple, like your transactions in store being tied to your account online, and you get an email receipt. I think that is the challenge, is that retail space is obviously expensive. A lot of flagship stores in major city centers are loss leaders. That retail footprint isn't actually generating a lot of revenue per square foot, but it's just another marketing expense, having a physical manifestation of what the brand is beyond the website.” *”There was a boom in e-commerce overall during COVID. When you have different partners like Shopify or Sub Stack, you can bring your business idea to life very easily. What happens then is that you have a community that's just really focused on single-channel DTC. And they probably created a solution to solve a personal problem. But at a certain stage of growth, they're like, ‘Hey, I can no longer sell to people like me with the same exact problem, because I've already reached all of them,' which is a good problem to have. So over the course of the last two years, you've seen more mature e-commerce businesses try to go omni-channel.”Time Stamps*[0:05] The Case of Scaling Up a DTC Brand*[0:32] Introducing Orchid Bertelsen, COO at Common Thread Collective*[10:45] Evidence #1: Sales are single-channel*[17:40] Evidence #2: Hasn't developed strategic sales partners*[20:44] Evidence #3: Has already saturated market*[34:16] Debrief*[35:28] HGS PubBioOrchid is the Chief Operating Officer of Common Thread Collective, an agency focused on helping ecommerce brands grow profitably, and entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams.Prior to joining CTC, Orchid Bertelsen was the Head of Consumer Experience Strategy & Innovation at Nestlé USA, where she evaluates and tests emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, voice assistance, AR/VR.
