This week we chat with Nihal Mehta! At Eniac, they call Nihal the human Rolodex, thanks to the thousands of connections he has made with some of the world's top companies and brands. He developed many of these connections (and scar tissue!) over the past 20+ years while founding five startups: Philly2nite -> UrbanGroove -> Chapter 7 bankruptcy; ipsh! -> acquired by Omnicom (NYSE: OMC); buzzd -> LocalResponse -> acquired by BlueCava.Early in his career, Nihal honed his ability to spot top entrepreneurial talent by investing in Admob (acquired by Google), Swiftkey (acquired by Microsoft), Tapad (acquired by Telenor), Tala, and Uber, to name a few. Nihal and his wife are now angel investors and LPs in almost 100 underrepresented founders and fund managers.Nihal is a co-founder of the non-profit “Project Ahimsa,” providing scholarships to disadvantaged youth in India, where his parents immigrated from in the early 1970s. Nihal also recently co-founded initiatives like Help Main Street to help restaurants survive the pandemic, and The 100k Pledge, a social justice tracker of economic empowerment to Black communities. You might catch him running down the Hudson River weekday mornings with founders and his #pitchandrun crew.Outside of the office Nihal loves to spend time with his wife Reshma and is a big supporter of her non-profit Girls Who Code and her initiative “Moms First.” Around town, you will usually see him with his sons Shaan and Sai and beagle-bulldog Stanley. Nihal is the life of the party, which is why he always spearheads Eniac events.Nihal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Philosophy and a BSE in Computer Science.Follow us!Nihal Mehta: @nihalmehtaEniac Ventures: @EniacVCErica Wenger: @erica_wengerDear Twentysomething: @deartwentysomething

Inspirational stories plus practical takeaways from the entrepreneurship world.Today's guest is Nihal Mehta, the founder of Eniac Ventures. They invest in bold leaders who use code to create transformational companies. They especially focus on seed rounds and early-stage companies. Before becoming a venture capitalist, Nihal created 5 companies himself. Some of these went bankrupt and others were acquired for millions of dollars. So he's seen the full range of what can happen at start-up and used these experiences to help many other founders. He is a strong believer in helping founders from underrepresented backgrounds and he does this through the initiatives such as ‘The 100k Pledge' and through his wife's initiatives such as ‘Girls Who Code' and ‘Marshall Plan for Moms'.It was a real pleasure to chat with Nihal today. Nihal Mehta is the Co-Founder of Eniac Ventures, a successful seed venture firm that has invested in unicorns like AirBnb and Boxed. Nihal has been a serial founder and an active investor for over a decade. The only way to know what a founder is REALLY going through is by being a founder yourself. IMHO, VCs who have operator experience have a great competitive advantage. Nihal is one of the best startup player-coaches out there so it was a blast discussing how his founder experience has influenced his VC strategy. During the chat, we also talk about some of Nihal's other endeavors, one of which is the India Internet Group (IIG). IIG is a fund based out of India so we talk about the startup and VC scene there. He also started The 100K Pledge, a website that holds people and companies accountable when they make public pledges to help fight injustice. The site keeps tabs on what they're actually doing to help the cause. As you can tell, we cover a lot during the chat. Big thanks to Nihal for joining me on the pod to catch up and share his thoughts on everything. Nihal Mehta is a founding partner of ENIAC. In his experience, entrepreneurship is not a career to be taken lightly. In VC it is do or die. An episode, full of truths that may seem uncomfortable but that puts things as they are within VC.

TribalScale CEO Sheetal Jaitly is joined by Founding Partner of ENIAC Ventures, Nihal Mehta. From music startups to Barcelona's Ocean's 11 dinner, from filing for bankruptcy to being known as "the human Rolodex" Nihal has decades of stories from the highest glory days of a startup, to the lowest lows, and as he says, these are often occurring within the same 24 hours.
Nihal Mehta, Founding General Partner, Eniac Ventures Key Takeaways: 1. "Time spent on media" vs "ad dollars going to media" are not directly tied. Consumer business models are not designed to succeed in recessions, and many will need to adjust rapidly to survive. 2. Construction, real estate, insurance, health care are large components of GDP transforming very quickly, presenting new opportunities for investors. 3. It's a great time to build, but not a great time to sell. Spend time building and improving your product, as opposed to focusing on selling. 4. Customers and buyers are also facing tight budgets, and there are better uses of your team's energy and focus over the next 12 months.

Nihal Mehta, Founding General Partner at ENIAC Ventures, provides a great set of insights into his definition of a full stack founding team. Either a set of co-founders who cover all the requisite skill-sets, or a solo founder who is a full-stack person – both configurations can work. Listen to the discussion for more color on the topic.
Nihal Mehta speaks with the talented founders of Shine Text, Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi on how they’ve built one of the fastest-growing health and wellness companies. Working together at DoSomething.org, they realized the importance of daily peer-to-peer support and seized the opportunity to build a community to help others. In this episode, Naomi and Marah speak about the early days growing Shine from 50,000 to now 3 million users and their approach to fundraising. They discuss the changing model of investor-founder relationship and how keeping an open dialogue led them to a Series A on Christmas Eve. Marah and Naomi also touch on how millennials are dispelling the Baby Boomer Myth of being too broke to invest in yourself and the intersectionality of self-care and technology, especially how important it is today in response to what is happening in the world. Nihal Mehta kicks off Seed to Scale’s opening episode with one of VC’s most prominent investors Mike Maples, the founding partner of Floodgate. Mike has backed some of the most well-known tech companies today, including Twitter, Twitch.tv, Lyft, Okta, Chegg, Demandforce, among many others. In this episode, Mike talks about his journey from being an entrepreneur in junior high writing video games to being a founder of two IPO companies, Tivoli and Motiv, and how his pivot to investor was his way to remain close to startups in order to “stay forever young.” He gives advice to investors on the importance of making randomness your friend and to remember you don’t have a monopoly on truth. Mike also digs into his role of spotting the Thunder Lizards before they hatch, what he believes makes a good founder: “They want to start a movement, not just a company,” and his biggest red flag.
