Hello Poison Friends! We are going over more wellness products and practices that have been used and promoted as cures for various illnesses, from colds to cancer and autoimmune diseases. In this final episode on the Wellness Industry's toxic side, we need to discuss some multi level marketing (MLM) businesses/groups that not only push such products, but also pull the vulnerable into financially difficult and sometimes fraudulent schemes. Two of these groups we are discussing (Young Living and doTERRA) deal with essential oils, so we are also discussing what essential oils are and what they are not. I want to take a look at the science behind these oils and see how the claims hold up under study and the facts. We also need to take a look into the spiritual side of essential oils and the MLMs selling them, because the backstory for both of these businesses is…a lot. We are going into Gary Young and his many run-ins with the law before and during the creation of Young Living as well as his many eccentricities, strange claims, and misdeeds along the way. We are also touching on how doTERRA came about because it is connected to Young Living and both have become million dollar companies. There is a lot to discuss, even at the surface level, with this subject. We'll go over a selection of popular oils and the claims behind them (such as being cures for COVID, cancer, autism, and ebola…among other illnesses), but there are far too many oils to cover them all. These companies have also encouraged the ingestion of essential oils, which can be dangerous as many are toxic and some may contain contaminants. The FTC and FDA has been all over both of these businesses because of their wild health claims with nothing to back them up. Another MLM we will briefly touch on is Herbal Life because there are more than essential oils MLMs when it comes to Wellness, of course. Herbal Life promotes nutrition and weight loss products that have caused a stir for possible being linked to liver toxicity as well as lead being discovered in some products. There are so many other MLMs dealing in similar products, so I am not specifically picking on these three. None of this is for bullying purposes and I am simply pulling from sources that can easily be found online on respected sites. These are just some popular companies and I could never talk about all the connected MLMs in one episode. That being said, this one is a wild ride…Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! Risk is relative, and fascism places everything in perspective. As such, this episode puts an end to ‘Org' aliases (because, why not?) before reiterating the purpose that has been core since the 'cult'ure series inception. It was never about one specific brand or a few bad players. It's about every one of us owning up to our complicity and passive acceptance of cult-capitalistic norms. Did you know that the once-fringe Wellness Industry is now worth more than Big Pharma? So it's no surprise that the confluence of pseudoscience and capitalism has given birth to the MAHA movement, which relies heavily on reflexive denialism and a lack of evidential accountability. New-age wellness culture is at least in part to blame, particularly the way that high-vibe religious zeal and spiritual supremacy have become normalized. In this episode, I reflect on my past work as a wellness grifter, where I inadvertently perpetuated colonizer logic by creating top-down sales funnels that exploited people's vulnerabilities for personal gain. I also speak explicitly about the launch of some former Nia (oops, there it is) influencers who are pitching a program of "liberation" in the aftermath of exiting high-demand influence and highlight six specific reasons why regular listeners of this podcast may want to be wary.Support the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. It's exhausting trying to do everything “right” when every headline, product, and influencer tells you something different. One day it's carbs, the next it's cortisol, and somehow your to-do list now includes cold plunges, fasting windows, and niche supplements. For entrepreneurs especially, the pressure to optimize every part of life turns wellness into another hustle—measured, marketed, and rarely sustainable. And after all that effort, you're still tired, still stressed, and quietly wondering if the whole system is just built to keep you chasing your tail. Mark Young is the founder and CEO of Ryze Agency, a South Florida marketing firm for health and wellness brands, and leads a medical device company focused on blood pressure reduction. He's also the author of Date Your Clients and host of the Performance Driven Living podcast where he shares practical health and business insights. Today, he explores how entrepreneurs can blend nutrition, storytelling, and AI to build stronger wellness ventures. He offers biohacking tips and marketing strategies that prioritize core health habits over quick fixes. His talk wove together tech, science, and narrative for lasting impact. Stay tuned! Hello Poison Friends! We have been covering this topic of “wellness” and the industry surrounding the term. We all want to be well, and obviously, there are some great practices out there to help us out with that, but there are also a lot of scams and misinformation out there as well. This week we are covering the story of Belle Gibson, a wellness influencer who told her followers that she had brain cancer and only had six months to live, but beat the odds using natural means and by changing her diet and lifestyle. Specifically, she promoted recipes that she would later sell in her app and cookbook (supported by Apple and Penguin Books). Belle, however, never had cancer, and while she had promised that the proceeds of her app sells would go towards various charities, she lied about that as well. She influenced many of those who did actually have cancer or chronic illness to stop conventional medicine practices such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, medications, etc. She continued her lies for years, selling her brand and giving inconsistent medical reports along the way. It all came crumbling down with a couple of investigative journalists who received a tip that Belle might not be so sick after all. We also have to talk about Goop. Gwenyth Paltrow's brand has always been pretty controversial for most of us, but she has made a lot of money and gained a following with it. As such, we need to discuss such products and practices promoted and provided by Goop as jade eggs, amethyst bottles, and expensive stickers or yoga mats that are supposed to help a variety of issues you may deal with. She has been in legal trouble for some of her claims, but you can still find a lot of these products on her website. Just a heads up: We may mention some products with descriptions not suitable for children to hear about while discussing Goop. Nothing descriptive, mind you, or graphic, just correct anatomical terminology. A final topic for discussion this week is that of the concerning beverage being sold at convenience stores or markets called Feel Free. This product, created and sold by Botanic Tonics, has led to a lot of concern with parents and doctors, because of what is in it. One ingredient we will discuss is Kava root extract, which is not necessarily toxic in low amounts (though extracts may have some hepatotoxic effects). It is another ingredient that has been causing problems: Kratom. This ingredient is known to produce opioid-like effects (and has been considered an opioid by the FDA since 2018) and is both physiologically and psychologically addictive, causing a lot of destruction in the lives of consumers, especially those who have suffered addiction before. Let's dig into the details and have some fun learning. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! In this fiery and brutally honest episode of BS Free MD, Drs. May and Tim Hindmarsh take aim at the billion-dollar longevity industry. They dissect the hype around anti-aging books and wellness fads—from Outlive by Peter Attia to the extreme regimens of tech millionaires like Brian Johnson—and ask: Is it all just a marketing scam?Tim rants about the absurdity of titles like Young Forever and How Not to Age, while May reflects on the emotional toll of chronic health issues that make those promises feel out of reach. They argue that true wellness isn't about chasing immortality, but about optimizing your lifestyle to enjoy what you love for as long as you can.Along the way, they call out:Biohacking cultsTechno-paganismCold plunge fads (yes, they predict you'll see them at garage sales soon)The spiritual emptiness of trying to live foreverInstead, they offer a refreshingly grounded take: move your body, sleep well, eat less junk, nurture your relationships, and do the fun stuff that lights you up. We need to discuss the Wellness Industry. Now, obviously, not everything considered “wellness” is bad or a scam. Meditation, Yoga, a typical spa day, etc. These are great and some people love them and the benefits of them. However, there are a lot of scams, frauds, and even outright dangerous trends floating around that I want to delve into. First, let's go back in time to find out when and how “snake oil” became synonymous with fraudulent medications and who some of the original “snake oil salesmen” were. Then we can look at some of today's most pushed diets and health fads that are either dangerous or just ineffective. We also need to check out the claims and realities behind the idea of detoxes and cleanses that have been marketed or promoted by influencers or celebrities. Also, the infamous coffee enema. Yeah, if you did not know that is a thing. This episode will also feature stories about Steve Jobs and his obsessive and restrictive diet as well as the functional medicine practitioner behind the carnivore diet and his colleague of sorts who had a large YouTube following and went by “Liver King,” before his secrets were discovered. Many of you have been sending me ideas for this sort of episode and because there is just so much to discuss with this topic, I am making it a 2 parter. So next week will be a breakdown on Goop and MLM's that push “health and wellness” products as well as some easy to obtain wellness beverages proving to be addictive and dangerous. In both of these episodes, we will be sharing some stories of influencers, gurus, authors, etc who have made a lot of money and hurt a lot of people by making false claims, outright lying, and pushing supplements, diets, and lifestyles that are dangerous to both one's health and bank account. If you're curious as to if you have any stored emotions or trauma that might be causing your illness, preventing you from achieving your goals, or even just showing up as the best, authentic version of yourself, I invite you to take my free Stored Emotions and Trauma Quiz.In this episode, I talk about how the word “authenticity” has been hijacked—and why that pisses me off.I break down what authenticity actually means, why it's not some performative trend, and how I've learned to spot the real thing versus the polished Instagram version. I share a personal story from a conference in Austin that still sticks with me, and I walk through a 7-step self-inventory to help you figure out where you might be out of alignment. We also get into the uncomfortable truth no one wants to admit about becoming your true self: you have to grieve the version of you that wasn't real. Today's episode is a little different—it's a deep dive into nonfiction and the wellness industry with journalist and author Amy Larocca. Amy's new book, How to Be Well, unpacks the cultural obsession with self-optimization and wellness, touching on everything from fashion to functional medicine, detox diets to supplements, and the way our bodies are treated and perceived in society. As someone who was deeply embedded in the wellness and life coaching world in the late aughts (fun fact: my first two podcasts were about personal development), this conversation felt personal and powerful. Amy brings curiosity and compassion as she explores the historical, political, and very personal impacts of wellness culture on women—especially those of us who came of age in the girlboss era.We talk about:The blurred lines between wellness as care and wellness as commerceHow our generation was sold “detoxes” and green powders instead of medical careWhy so much of wellness is rooted in privilege, access, and aspirational marketingWhat happens when social media gurus replace doctorsHow the term "self-care" evolved from political activism to spa-day slogansWhether you're navigating your wellness journey or untangling old beliefs about body image, health, and healing—this episode will hit home. This Book Is for You If…You've ever done a juice cleanse, bought a moon dust supplement, or considered if celery juice could change your life. Or if you just want to understand the cultural forces shaping the wellness movement with a critical but empathetic lens.
The buzzword of late, has been wellness. Wellness in mind and body is something all of us strive for. But wellness has also become an entire industry in itself – with products, services and clinics all claiming to offer it in different forms. The nutraceuticals industry for instance, is growing rapidly, projected to be worth 64 billion dollars by 2030, while aesthetic medicine is projected to triple its value by 2029. From protein powders to supplements, anti-ageing lotions to treatments at wellness lounges, there is no dearth of offerings and advertisements. But how safe are these products and procedures? Do what they claim in their advertisements match what offer in reality? What goes into these products and who regulates them? On the surface, what the wellness industry is offering feels like an antidote to our fragmented and fast-paced lives. Influencers and companies use words like "mindfulness" or “whole foods” or “self care” to get our stressed out, burnt out buy in. But, somewhere along the line those promises start to morph into luxury services, expensive memberships and supplements you never knew you needed. In her book “How to Be Well” former fashion journalist Amy Larocca explores the blurred line between healing and branding in a $6 trillion dollar industry. We discuss:Why our current wellness craze mirrors 1930s pre-Nazi GermanyHow Abraham Flexner completely changed how we teach medicine in the US for better – and for worseWhy the spiritual and community void left by declining religious participation leads people to look to the wellness industry for bothAmy says what attracts people to the modern fitness class has parallels to religious practices:“So if you look at what happens in ritual religious gatherings… You see a lot of that replicated in a lot of these boutique fitness settings. You have ritual, you have music, you have ecstatic movement, you have charismatic leaders, you have a sermon. And these sermons have increasingly moved away from talk of muffin tops and bikini bodies and losing that whatever it is, to kindness, community, thinking about your place in the world, thinking about taking the energy that you are building up in that room and spreading it forward. ”Relevant LinksBuy Amy's book “How to Be Well: Navigating Our Self-Care Epidemic, One Dubious Cure at a Time”Read this Wikipedia page on Martine Rothblatt's robot replica of her wife BinaCheck out this article on the impact of the Flexner report on US medicineRead the book “McMindfulness” Amy mentions in the episodeSign up for Lamar's SoulCycle classAbout Our GuestAmy Larocca is an award-winning American journalist. Welcome back! As my birthday week rolls around, I find myself feeling less celebratory and more… salty. There's a growing frustration I've been carrying about the health and wellness space, and today I'm finally letting it out.Too many women are being misled by shiny branding and empty promises. Behind all the perfect aesthetics and “healing” talk, there's a lot of manipulation going on, and it's time to name it.In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on the hidden side of the industry. We'll talk about the rise of self-proclaimed “gurus” and spiritual influencers who sell a curated image of healing while profiting from confusion and vulnerability. It's easy to get lost in the noise, especially for women who are genuinely trying to reconnect with themselves. This episode is your reminder to stay sharp. We'll unpack the difference between being judgmental and simply seeing things clearly. I'll also dive into the phrase: “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves,” and what it really means for navigating this space with clarity.Tune in to learn how to spot the fakes, trust your intuition, and take your power back from anyone selling you smoke and mirrors. It's time to ask for more than just good vibes. So let's demand what's real, true, and actually healing. In this episode:[01:10] Why I'm feeling salty and ready to spill some tea. Can a waiver actually protect you from liability? Where exactly is the line between personal training and physical therapy? These are the critical questions facing fitness professionals in what legal expert Barbara Zabawa calls "the Wild West" of wellness law.In this eye-opening conversation, Professor Zabawa—a wellness law specialist with 25 years of experience and author of "No More Wild West: The Need for Standards in the Wellness Industry"—cuts through the confusion surrounding fitness industry legalities. She reveals why certifications aren't legally required (despite what many believe), explains how gyms and insurance companies create private requirements that feel like legal mandates, and offers a sobering look at when waivers actually protect you—and when they absolutely don't.The discussion takes a particularly practical turn when addressing scope of practice concerns. Zabawa describes the "ideal client" for non-licensed professionals and the red flags that should prompt referrals to licensed healthcare providers. For trainers working online, she shares a surprising legal risk many never consider: being held liable for visible hazards in your remote client's environment.Perhaps most valuable is Zabawa's insight into why more injured clients don't sue their trainers (it's not what you think), and the specific steps fitness professionals can take to protect themselves legally. You've probably seen the ads for products and services that promise to make you happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. Things like journals, air purifiers, crystal jewellery, and of course, bubble baths. These are all examples of what some experts call ‘faux self-care': the idea that we can buy our way out of stress, burnout, and depression. It's also based on the idea that we are responsible for our own wellbeing, and that we shouldn't expect or demand care from others. This is especially true for women, who are often expected to juggle multiple roles and responsibilities without complaining or asking for help. But does faux self-care really work, or does it make us feel worse in the long run? And how can we practise real self-care? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Devi Sridhar's new book “How Not to Die (Too Soon) - The Lies We've Been Sold, and the Policies That Could Save Us” is focussing on the way wellness culture ignores the societal context in which health is really created. As a trained personal trainer and professor of global public health, Devi's straddling both of those worlds, and joins us to talk about how she would tackle our lowering life expectancy. Also, John Downey, from the Centre of Health Technology at Peninsula Medical School, and Martha Lee from NHS Devon Integrated Care Board, have written about Portsmouth's "Living Lab" - which has been set up to test how health tech can actually work in the real world, but also (importantly, critically) how it can be properly evaluated and integrated into the NHS and social care. The issues at stake—our health, our rights, how we educate our kids—demand a lot from us. Yet, in today's attention economy, leaders don't always earn influence through integrity and truth. Instead, they master the art of capturing emotions, feeding fears, and speaking to lived experiences, often amplifying misinformation rather than challenging it.When leaders step into the fight against misinformation, they take on enormous risks and the consequences are very real, from open hostility to verbal abuse to death threats.Staying engaged in these difficult conversations requires more than just knowledge; it demands emotional regulation, capacity for conflict, and self-awareness. This is where unprocessed relational trauma can shape how a leader navigates conflict. But leaders who work through these wounds develop the ability to hold tension without collapsing or attacking. Developing this capacity for conflict is critical today. Because in an era when science is under siege, how we engage in conflict matters just as much as the facts themselves. In the first of two conversations with leaders who model how to engage with critics without feeding the outrage machine, today's guest shares his approach to tackling conflict and misinformation in science and health spaces, one where we engage with rigor and compassion without bending to the pressures of false equivalence. He understands that courage isn't about shouting the loudest; it's about staying grounded in your values, standing firm in the truth, and being authentic and creative in capturing much-coveted attention. How is gut health connected to hormones and immune function? Why is testing over guessing essential in managing your health? In this episode, I welcome back Reed Davis, a leading expert in gut health and functional diagnostic nutrition. We dive into the importance of gut health in overall wellness and the evolving landscape of the health and wellness industry and how more practitioners are integrating holistic methods into their practices.Learn more about Reed Davis:Reed Davis, Double-Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) and Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT), is an expert in functional lab testing and holistic lifestyle medicine. He is the Founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) and the FDN Certification Course with over 4,000 graduates in 50 countries. Reed served as the Health Director at a Wellness Center in Southern California for over 10 years and with over 10,000 clients is known as one of the most experienced clinicians in his field. Reed serves on the Advisory Board of the American Natural Wellness Coaches Board and the American Association of Natural Wellness Coaches. He lives in the US and when not teaching the FDN Certification Course and helping his graduates build their private practices, he is usually found gardening or riding motorcycles. As an Environmental Paralegal and conservationist throughout the 90's Reed was “saving the planet” including the air, birds, water, trees and bees. In 1999 he turned his attention to, “What is the environment doing to PEOPLE, including ME?” That began a 25+ year career dedicated to helping people find out what's really wrong and how to fix it naturally. After earning a certificate in nutritional therapy, Reed noticed that most patients had already seen multiple doctors and therapists and still had many of their original complaints. Reed decided then he would be the last practitioner anyone needed to see and became an expert in functional lab assessments. The FDN Course is the result of more research and experience than most practitioners get in a lifetime.Reed Davis is one of the authors of four books including “The Needs Gap”: A Simple Guide to Manage Autoimmune Disease and Chronic Pain. This book fills the gap between standard medicine approaches and alternative strategies for resolving chronic conditions as well as some great recipes.Access Reed's popular webinar Step System to Overcome Unwanted Health Issues at http://www.fdntraining.com/vargaWays to work with Rachel Varga!FREE 30-minute Biohacking For Ageless Beauty Training! https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/freebiesBook a 15-minute personalized radiance consultation with Rachel to begin your skin and radiance journey now. https://rachelvarga.as.me/schedule/6f78f1da/appointment/46262137/calendar/2738969?appointmentTypeIds%5B%5D=46262137Download Radiance: The New Skin Science on Audible!Book a One-on-one with Rachel Varga for customized skin care, rejuvenation guidance, and ongoing support! https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/consultation and use code Podcast15!Shop skincare, make-up, hair/skin/nail supplements, grooming tools, dermal rollers, and much more! https://alwaysradiantskinshop.com/Register for my next weekly LIVE and FREE Masterclass on various topics where I answer your questions! https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwuceioqTwiE9O1K1fF1vnLqZBlCvPdkDWc The video replays (which are highly interactive) are available on my skin shop for a small fee here!Join Seasonal Skincare Expert Tutorials on skincare, makeup, hair care (and growth), biohacking, clean peels, pre and post-rejuvenation tips, dermal rolling, and advanced at-home technologies for the face and body! https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/Join The School of Radiance Membership for your personal radiant transformation by cultivating resilient radiance through detoxing from environmental toxins, enhancing communication, enhancing relationships, etiquette, and much more: https://www.theschoolofradiance.com/membershipAs a disclaimer, please note that the information shared in this podcast and interview is not to be taken as medical advice, and it's always important to consult with your physician before making any lifestyle changes. It's such a pleasure to have the totally brilliant journalist Madeleine Spencer back on the podcast.Mads recently wrote an incredible piece for Elle Magazine about how well-informed, science backed health advice is often being replaced by misinformation that is being perpetuated by so-called experts (You only need watch Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix to understand how easily things can go wrong).I was so inspired by the article that I needed to get her on the podcast to delve into this further. During the episode Madeleine talks about the positive side of wellbeing and the amazing things that she has learnt over the years. She also talks about the ease with which misinformation can spread and why we need to be so very careful about who we take advice from.We also talk about PCOS, supplements, eating in a balanced way and lots more.Madeleine is so well versed on this topic and I think that this is a really important episode for anyone who is confused and overwhelmed about the health and wellbeing industry.

Barris explains how "conspirituality" merges left-leaning new-age beliefs with right-wing political ideologies, often exploiting distrust in institutions like healthcare. They explore how wellness influencers leverage emotional appeal, certainty, and fear-mongering to market alternative health solutions. They also discuss how a strong focus on individualism contributes to the spread of medical misinformation and how social media plays a big role in making these ideas more popular. The conversation also touches on figures like RFK Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement, which advocates for food regulation while paradoxically aligning with deregulation-focused politics. Dr Block and Barris went further to discuss how physicians can push back by fostering trust, communicating uncertainty effectively, and engaging in social media discourse. Abby and Patrick welcome psychoanalyst and author Jamieson Webster to discuss her brand-new book, On Breathing: Care in a Time of Catastrophe, out in March 2025 from Catapult. It's a wide-ranging conversation that traverses clinical, social, and political domains while remaining firmly grounded in one of the most basic prerequisites for human life: the activity of breathing. In what ways does the history of psychoanalysis represent a repression of the fact of breathing? How do analytic accounts from Freud to Winnicott to Bion to Lacan variously take up or downplay the necessity of respiration? How does thinking about breath implicate our ideas about development, embodiment, the production of speech, and more? And how does thinking in a sustained way about breath challenge our assumptions about individuality, independence, and wellbeing? The three explore the stakes and meanings of breathing, from COVID wards to police violence to the wellness industry and beyond. With her unique expertise as a registered dietitian, consultant, and author, Jaclyn unpacks the promises, pitfalls, and scientific inaccuracies in MAHA's approach to food, nutrition, and public health. Jaclyn brings her professional insight into the broader systemic issues behind America's rising rates of chronic disease and why focusing on food additives, seed oils, and GMO crops distracts from meaningful public health solutions.
