In this episode of Compared to Who?, Heather Creekmore invites listeners to take a deeply-needed exhale from the relentless messages around body image and self-worth that the world sends our way. Building on the "Waiting for Weight Loss" series, Heather opens up about her own struggles with feeling valuable through fitness and body changes, and the letdown that follows when external goals don’t bring the internal peace we’re promised. Heather dives into the concept of "monetized insecurity"—the way industries profit from our feelings of inadequacy—and breaks down why finding your worth in God, not in weight loss or body perfection, is the only path that leads to real security and rest. You’ll walk away with: Practical breathwork exercises for grounding and relaxation A guided prayer for internalizing your true value An honest look at cultural lies vs. God’s unchanging truth about your worth Reflective questions to revisit whenever you need a reminder that you are already loved, worthy, and enough Key Question: Whose message is easier for you to believe: monetized insecurity or God's message of worth beyond what you measure? In Part 1, I shared how my own bloodwork forced me to question everything I thought I knew about cholesterol. In this episode, we go deeper — into the markers that actually predict cardiovascular risk and why so many women are being reassured by tests that don't tell the full story. Because a "normal" cholesterol panel doesn't mean your risk is low. It often just means the most important markers were never measured. I walk you through the two advanced markers that can completely change how we understand heart disease risk — especially when genetics are involved — and why these tests are essential if you want a clear, accurate picture of your cardiovascular health. We also have an honest conversation about cholesterol-lowering medications: what they do, when they make sense, and why modern medicine can be protective when used thoughtfully and strategically. This isn't about fear. It's about clarity. It's about having the full picture so you can make informed decisions about your health and your future. In this episode of The Perimenopause Solution Podcast, you'll learn: • Why a standard cholesterol panel often misses true cardiovascular risk • What Lipoprotein(a) is and why genetics play a major role • Why ApoB is one of the strongest predictors of heart disease • How advanced markers change risk assessment — even when traditional labs look "normal" • The truth about cholesterol-lowering medications and how they work in the body • When lifestyle is enough — and when additional support may be protective • How to advocate for the testing and information you deserve If you've ever been told your cholesterol looks "fine," this episode will help you understand what may still be missing — and why that matters. If you're a licensed health professional in British Columbia, this episode breaks down why the upcoming shift from the Health Professions Act to the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) could significantly impact how you practice, what you can say, and even whether you can keep your license. Kendra walks through the key provisions raising concern for practitioners, including government-appointed regulatory boards, expanded enforcement powers, and the potential consequences for non-compliance. Beyond explaining what's changing, this conversation explores the bigger question many practitioners are quietly asking: what happens when the rules of your profession change after you've already built your career around them? Kendra shares why more licensed professionals are exploring alternative practice models and what it can look like to build a business outside traditional regulatory structures. This episode is ultimately about awareness, choice, and professional autonomy. Whether you plan to stay within the regulated system or consider a different path, Kendra encourages practitioners to understand what's coming, think critically about their options, and make decisions that align with how they want to practice long-term.What We Cover in This EpisodeWhat the HPOA Actually Changes and Why Practitioners Are Paying Attention (00:50)The Real Risks to Your License, Income, and Professional Autonomy (05:05)Why More Practitioners Are Exploring Online Health Coaching Models (09:30)How to Transition Safely Without Burning Down Your Current Career (12:00)Why Waiting Could Cost You Options (Timing Matters More Than You Think) (15:30) Resources mentioned:Apply for HCA: https://go.kendraperry.net/apply-hca Leave the podcast a 5-star review: https://ratethispodcast.com/wealthyWATCH ON YOUTUBE
For years, women have been told cholesterol doesn't really matter — or that as long as you're "metabolically healthy," you don't need to worry. In this episode, Tara shares why she no longer believes that… and how her own bloodwork forced her to rethink everything she once taught. Despite being fit, metabolically healthy, and doing "all the right things," Tara discovered she has genetically driven high cholesterol — something lifestyle alone couldn't fix. She explains why common tests like a coronary calcium score can give a false sense of security, and why genetics play a much bigger role in heart disease risk than the wellness industry admits. This episode challenges the oversimplified, feel-good cholesterol messaging online and replaces it with nuance, evidence, and real-life experience. In Part 1, you'll learn: Why "high cholesterol doesn't matter" is misleading How Tara discovered her cholesterol issue was genetic Why being fit does not guarantee low cardiovascular risk The problem with relying only on standard heart scans The difference between lifestyle-driven and genetically driven cholesterol WATCH ON YOUTUBE -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HANGOUT WITH TARA ON FEBRUARY 24TH My Perimenopause Hangout is happening on February 24th and there's still time to join HERE. The health and wellness industry loves to tell women they're broken — and then sell them the fix. In this unfiltered and slightly unhinged solo episode, Nicole Kalil calls out wellness culture for what it too often is: rebranded diet culture, influencer-led misinformation, and shame dressed up as self-care. From green juice guilt to inflammation fear-mongering to TikTok experts blaming women for their own illnesses, Nicole takes aim at an industry that claims to prioritize longevity and quality of life — while obsessing over looking younger, smaller, and more “acceptable.” She shares her own expensive experiments with wellness trends, what actually helped, what didn't, and why one-size-fits-all solutions are a massive red flag. This episode is a permission slip to trust your body, question the algorithm, and stop outsourcing your health decisions to people with discount codes and zero accountability. Say the word wellness and it conjures an instant image in our minds… glowing skin, enviable abs, sludgy looking juice, tasteful muted leisurewear and lots and lots of money. Where we used to have diets and anti-ageing cream, we now have peloton and ashwaghanda gummies and collagen powder. Or we do if we can afford to. So I'm delighted to welcome to The Shift, the award-winning American journalist Amy Larocca, who has written an entire book on the subject, How To Be Well, aptly subtitled ‘finding a way through the self-care epidemic without losing your mind and your money'. I've been a fan of Amy's work for a long time because for 20 years she was the fashion editor of New York magazine and like me is interested in the recent shift from owning the latest it bag to owning the latest it abs. She also wrote a great piece for the New York Times back in 2022 called Welcome to the menopause Gold Rush which I must have shared hundreds of times and will link to in the show notes. Amy joined me to talk about how easy it is to get sucked in by the virtue trap of wellness promise, how suddenly everyone's a frontiers woman, bovine colostrum (yes really), how the industry is sucking in teenage boys and the price of entry to adult womanhood. We also discussed Oprah, HRT, bionic babies biohacking and so much more! * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including How To Be Well by Amy Larocca as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com Learn more about your ad choices. If you're curious as to whether you have any stored emotions or trauma that might be causing your illness, preventing you from achieving your goals, or even just showing up as the best, authentic version of yourself, I invite you to take my free Stored Emotions and Trauma QuizWhat if functional medicine is just another kind of greenwashed medicine, still missing the real root cause?Supplements and stricter health routines don't always bring us closer to true healing. After decades in microbiology and functional medicine, I've watched the field drift toward complexity and noise, often replacing pills with powders, not purpose. A recent conversation with a longtime friend confirmed what I'd been intuitively feeling for years: even our so-called “holistic” approaches can keep us sick.More testing, stricter diets, and endless “shoulds” can disconnect us from our own intuition. The good news is, there is something that drives lasting change. Because sometimes the best “treatment” isn't another supplement at all. Send us a textYou ever scroll through Instagram and see someone claiming to “treat the root cause” of depression with green juice and moonlight? Yeah, me too. And today, we're calling BS (politely but firmly) with my guest, Dr. Jonathan Stea, a clinical psychologist and actual scientist who's made it his mission to expose mental health pseudoscience for what it is: dangerous, seductive, and everywhere. We get into how pseudoscience sneaks into our feeds wearing yoga pants and using words like “functional” and “integrative.” Dr. Stea breaks down the nine red flags to spot bad science before it grifts your wallet and your well-being. We also talk about why “food is medicine” isn't the slam dunk it sounds like, what makes “natural” such a sneaky marketing term, and why even really smart people fall for this stuff. And because it's not all doomscrolling and debunking, we dig into how to build your own mental health literacy so you can tell the difference between evidence-based care and snake oil with a side of affirmation cards. We even time-travel back to the 1800s to meet Dr. Kellogg (yes, the cereal guy), who, no joke, used to serve his own poop at dinner parties in the name of wellness. The wellness industry's always been wild, folks. If you've ever side-eyed a wellness claim but didn't quite know why, or if you've bought the collagen powder anyway, this one's gonna be eye-opening. Let's get science-y (without the snooze). What's Inside:How to spot mental health pseudoscience and why it's so damn convincingThe “root cause” and “natural cure” tropes that keep the wellness grift aliveThe surprisingly bonkers history of Dr. Kellogg and early wellness quackeryWhy you can have mental illness and mental health at the same timeHow to boost your mental health literacy and protect yourself from bad infoQuick gut check. Hello Poison Friends! We are going over more wellness products and practices that have been used and promoted as cures for various illnesses, from colds to cancer and autoimmune diseases. In this final episode on the Wellness Industry's toxic side, we need to discuss some multi level marketing (MLM) businesses/groups that not only push such products, but also pull the vulnerable into financially difficult and sometimes fraudulent schemes. Two of these groups we are discussing (Young Living and doTERRA) deal with essential oils, so we are also discussing what essential oils are and what they are not. I want to take a look at the science behind these oils and see how the claims hold up under study and the facts. We also need to take a look into the spiritual side of essential oils and the MLMs selling them, because the backstory for both of these businesses is…a lot. We are going into Gary Young and his many run-ins with the law before and during the creation of Young Living as well as his many eccentricities, strange claims, and misdeeds along the way. We are also touching on how doTERRA came about because it is connected to Young Living and both have become million dollar companies. There is a lot to discuss, even at the surface level, with this subject. We'll go over a selection of popular oils and the claims behind them (such as being cures for COVID, cancer, autism, and ebola…among other illnesses), but there are far too many oils to cover them all. These companies have also encouraged the ingestion of essential oils, which can be dangerous as many are toxic and some may contain contaminants. The FTC and FDA has been all over both of these businesses because of their wild health claims with nothing to back them up. Another MLM we will briefly touch on is Herbal Life because there are more than essential oils MLMs when it comes to Wellness, of course. Herbal Life promotes nutrition and weight loss products that have caused a stir for possible being linked to liver toxicity as well as lead being discovered in some products. There are so many other MLMs dealing in similar products, so I am not specifically picking on these three. None of this is for bullying purposes and I am simply pulling from sources that can easily be found online on respected sites. These are just some popular companies and I could never talk about all the connected MLMs in one episode. That being said, this one is a wild ride…Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! Risk is relative, and fascism places everything in perspective. As such, this episode puts an end to ‘Org' aliases (because, why not?) before reiterating the purpose that has been core since the 'cult'ure series inception. It was never about one specific brand or a few bad players. It's about every one of us owning up to our complicity and passive acceptance of cult-capitalistic norms. Did you know that the once-fringe Wellness Industry is now worth more than Big Pharma? So it's no surprise that the confluence of pseudoscience and capitalism has given birth to the MAHA movement, which relies heavily on reflexive denialism and a lack of evidential accountability. New-age wellness culture is at least in part to blame, particularly the way that high-vibe religious zeal and spiritual supremacy have become normalized. In this episode, I reflect on my past work as a wellness grifter, where I inadvertently perpetuated colonizer logic by creating top-down sales funnels that exploited people's vulnerabilities for personal gain. I also speak explicitly about the launch of some former Nia (oops, there it is) influencers who are pitching a program of "liberation" in the aftermath of exiting high-demand influence and highlight six specific reasons why regular listeners of this podcast may want to be wary.Support the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. It's exhausting trying to do everything “right” when every headline, product, and influencer tells you something different. One day it's carbs, the next it's cortisol, and somehow your to-do list now includes cold plunges, fasting windows, and niche supplements. For entrepreneurs especially, the pressure to optimize every part of life turns wellness into another hustle—measured, marketed, and rarely sustainable. And after all that effort, you're still tired, still stressed, and quietly wondering if the whole system is just built to keep you chasing your tail. Mark Young is the founder and CEO of Ryze Agency, a South Florida marketing firm for health and wellness brands, and leads a medical device company focused on blood pressure reduction. He's also the author of Date Your Clients and host of the Performance Driven Living podcast where he shares practical health and business insights. Today, he explores how entrepreneurs can blend nutrition, storytelling, and AI to build stronger wellness ventures. Hello Poison Friends! We have been covering this topic of “wellness” and the industry surrounding the term. We all want to be well, and obviously, there are some great practices out there to help us out with that, but there are also a lot of scams and misinformation out there as well. This week we are covering the story of Belle Gibson, a wellness influencer who told her followers that she had brain cancer and only had six months to live, but beat the odds using natural means and by changing her diet and lifestyle. Specifically, she promoted recipes that she would later sell in her app and cookbook (supported by Apple and Penguin Books). Belle, however, never had cancer, and while she had promised that the proceeds of her app sells would go towards various charities, she lied about that as well. She influenced many of those who did actually have cancer or chronic illness to stop conventional medicine practices such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, medications, etc. She continued her lies for years, selling her brand and giving inconsistent medical reports along the way. It all came crumbling down with a couple of investigative journalists who received a tip that Belle might not be so sick after all. We also have to talk about Goop. Gwenyth Paltrow's brand has always been pretty controversial for most of us, but she has made a lot of money and gained a following with it. As such, we need to discuss such products and practices promoted and provided by Goop as jade eggs, amethyst bottles, and expensive stickers or yoga mats that are supposed to help a variety of issues you may deal with. She has been in legal trouble for some of her claims, but you can still find a lot of these products on her website. Just a heads up: We may mention some products with descriptions not suitable for children to hear about while discussing Goop. Nothing descriptive, mind you, or graphic, just correct anatomical terminology. A final topic for discussion this week is that of the concerning beverage being sold at convenience stores or markets called Feel Free. This product, created and sold by Botanic Tonics, has led to a lot of concern with parents and doctors, because of what is in it. One ingredient we will discuss is Kava root extract, which is not necessarily toxic in low amounts (though extracts may have some hepatotoxic effects). It is another ingredient that has been causing problems: Kratom. This ingredient is known to produce opioid-like effects (and has been considered an opioid by the FDA since 2018) and is both physiologically and psychologically addictive, causing a lot of destruction in the lives of consumers, especially those who have suffered addiction before. Let's dig into the details and have some fun learning. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! In this fiery and brutally honest episode of BS Free MD, Drs. May and Tim Hindmarsh take aim at the billion-dollar longevity industry. They dissect the hype around anti-aging books and wellness fads—from Outlive by Peter Attia to the extreme regimens of tech millionaires like Brian Johnson—and ask: Is it all just a marketing scam?Tim rants about the absurdity of titles like Young Forever and How Not to Age, while May reflects on the emotional toll of chronic health issues that make those promises feel out of reach. They argue that true wellness isn't about chasing immortality, but about optimizing your lifestyle to enjoy what you love for as long as you can.Along the way, they call out:Biohacking cultsTechno-paganismCold plunge fads (yes, they predict you'll see them at garage sales soon)The spiritual emptiness of trying to live foreverInstead, they offer a refreshingly grounded take: move your body, sleep well, eat less junk, nurture your relationships, and do the fun stuff that lights you up. We need to discuss the Wellness Industry. Now, obviously, not everything considered “wellness” is bad or a scam. Meditation, Yoga, a typical spa day, etc. These are great and some people love them and the benefits of them. However, there are a lot of scams, frauds, and even outright dangerous trends floating around that I want to delve into. First, let's go back in time to find out when and how “snake oil” became synonymous with fraudulent medications and who some of the original “snake oil salesmen” were. Then we can look at some of today's most pushed diets and health fads that are either dangerous or just ineffective. We also need to check out the claims and realities behind the idea of detoxes and cleanses that have been marketed or promoted by influencers or celebrities. Also, the infamous coffee enema. Yeah, if you did not know that is a thing. This episode will also feature stories about Steve Jobs and his obsessive and restrictive diet as well as the functional medicine practitioner behind the carnivore diet and his colleague of sorts who had a large YouTube following and went by “Liver King,” before his secrets were discovered. Many of you have been sending me ideas for this sort of episode and because there is just so much to discuss with this topic, I am making it a 2 parter. So next week will be a breakdown on Goop and MLM's that push “health and wellness” products as well as some easy to obtain wellness beverages proving to be addictive and dangerous. In both of these episodes, we will be sharing some stories of influencers, gurus, authors, etc who have made a lot of money and hurt a lot of people by making false claims, outright lying, and pushing supplements, diets, and lifestyles that are dangerous to both one's health and bank account. Today's episode is a little different—it's a deep dive into nonfiction and the wellness industry with journalist and author Amy Larocca. Amy's new book, How to Be Well, unpacks the cultural obsession with self-optimization and wellness, touching on everything from fashion to functional medicine, detox diets to supplements, and the way our bodies are treated and perceived in society. As someone who was deeply embedded in the wellness and life coaching world in the late aughts (fun fact: my first two podcasts were about personal development), this conversation felt personal and powerful. Amy brings curiosity and compassion as she explores the historical, political, and very personal impacts of wellness culture on women—especially those of us who came of age in the girlboss era.We talk about:The blurred lines between wellness as care and wellness as commerceHow our generation was sold “detoxes” and green powders instead of medical careWhy so much of wellness is rooted in privilege, access, and aspirational marketingWhat happens when social media gurus replace doctorsHow the term "self-care" evolved from political activism to spa-day slogansWhether you're navigating your wellness journey or untangling old beliefs about body image, health, and healing—this episode will hit home. This Book Is for You If…You've ever done a juice cleanse, bought a moon dust supplement, or considered if celery juice could change your life. Or if you just want to understand the cultural forces shaping the wellness movement with a critical but empathetic lens.
On the surface, what the wellness industry is offering feels like an antidote to our fragmented and fast-paced lives. Influencers and companies use words like "mindfulness" or “whole foods” or “self care” to get our stressed out, burnt out buy in. But, somewhere along the line those promises start to morph into luxury services, expensive memberships and supplements you never knew you needed. In her book “How to Be Well” former fashion journalist Amy Larocca explores the blurred line between healing and branding in a $6 trillion dollar industry. We discuss:Why our current wellness craze mirrors 1930s pre-Nazi GermanyHow Abraham Flexner completely changed how we teach medicine in the US for better – and for worseWhy the spiritual and community void left by declining religious participation leads people to look to the wellness industry for bothAmy says what attracts people to the modern fitness class has parallels to religious practices:“So if you look at what happens in ritual religious gatherings… You see a lot of that replicated in a lot of these boutique fitness settings. You have ritual, you have music, you have ecstatic movement, you have charismatic leaders, you have a sermon. And these sermons have increasingly moved away from talk of muffin tops and bikini bodies and losing that whatever it is, to kindness, community, thinking about your place in the world, thinking about taking the energy that you are building up in that room and spreading it forward. ”Relevant LinksBuy Amy's book “How to Be Well: Navigating Our Self-Care Epidemic, One Dubious Cure at a Time”Read this Wikipedia page on Martine Rothblatt's robot replica of her wife BinaCheck out this article on the impact of the Flexner report on US medicineRead the book “McMindfulness” Amy mentions in the episodeSign up for Lamar's SoulCycle classAbout Our GuestAmy Larocca is an award-winning American journalist. Welcome back! As my birthday week rolls around, I find myself feeling less celebratory and more… salty. There's a growing frustration I've been carrying about the health and wellness space, and today I'm finally letting it out.Too many women are being misled by shiny branding and empty promises. Behind all the perfect aesthetics and “healing” talk, there's a lot of manipulation going on, and it's time to name it.In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on the hidden side of the industry. We'll talk about the rise of self-proclaimed “gurus” and spiritual influencers who sell a curated image of healing while profiting from confusion and vulnerability. It's easy to get lost in the noise, especially for women who are genuinely trying to reconnect with themselves. This episode is your reminder to stay sharp. We'll unpack the difference between being judgmental and simply seeing things clearly. I'll also dive into the phrase: “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves,” and what it really means for navigating this space with clarity.Tune in to learn how to spot the fakes, trust your intuition, and take your power back from anyone selling you smoke and mirrors. It's time to ask for more than just good vibes. So let's demand what's real, true, and actually healing. In this episode:[01:10] Why I'm feeling salty and ready to spill some tea. [04:49] Going over the 5 feminine survival archetypes.[14:30] The problem with inauthentic spiritual language.[22:27] Why it's more important than ever to have sharp discernment. [27:25] How to spot a "Jack of all trades, master of none."[35:18] Being "wise as serpents and innocent as doves."[39:47] A final call to see through the illusion and trust yourself.Links and Resources: Take the Feminine Survival Archetypes Quiz here: https://www.jessicaashwellness.com/quizCurious about my new course, Energetic Empress? Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Professor Barabara Zabawa owner of wellnesslaw.com and author ofQuick & Easy Wellness Law: "No Fluff" Answers to Wellness Practitioners' Most Common Legal Questions & Law for Fitness Managers and Exercise ProfessionalsWhat's the real difference between certification and licensure? Can a waiver actually protect you from liability? Where exactly is the line between personal training and physical therapy? These are the critical questions facing fitness professionals in what legal expert Barbara Zabawa calls "the Wild West" of wellness law.In this eye-opening conversation, Professor Zabawa—a wellness law specialist with 25 years of experience and author of "No More Wild West: The Need for Standards in the Wellness Industry"—cuts through the confusion surrounding fitness industry legalities. She reveals why certifications aren't legally required (despite what many believe), explains how gyms and insurance companies create private requirements that feel like legal mandates, and offers a sobering look at when waivers actually protect you—and when they absolutely don't.The discussion takes a particularly practical turn when addressing scope of practice concerns. Zabawa describes the "ideal client" for non-licensed professionals and the red flags that should prompt referrals to licensed healthcare providers. For trainers working online, she shares a surprising legal risk many never consider: being held liable for visible hazards in your remote client's environment.Perhaps most valuable is Zabawa's insight into why more injured clients don't sue their trainers (it's not what you think), and the specific steps fitness professionals can take to protect themselves legally. Whether you're a seasoned trainer or just starting your fitness career, this conversation provides crucial knowledge that could save your business and reputation.Looking for more protection?
