Nina Freeman is an American independent video game writer and designer. While a student at Pace University in New York, she was drawn to the work of Frank O'Hara and other poets of the New York School, who documented their lives through witty, confessional verse. She began to explore ways in which she could employ a similar tone, not in poetry, but in video games. Her 2014 game “how do you Do It?,” puts the player in the role of an awkward tween who is desperately trying to figure out how sex works while playing with dolls. The game established a tone and themes that my guest explored in her subsequent work, most famously Cibele, an adventure video game about a romance developed through an online multiplayer game. Her memoir-like approach has proven influential. The video game designer Francesca Carletto-Leon recently told the New York Times: “Her work has been hugely inspirational to me and important to the larger industry.”USEFUL LINKSNina's Instagram: @PersocomninaNina's Itch.io page: Size ZeroIncrepare's Slave of GodDiego Garcia's website Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. We're talking video game romances this week on Kotaku Splitscreen. First, Ashley fulfills her life-long dream of discussing the best and worst of BioWare romances. Then, the team collaborates on their dream dating sim. (It's a bit unconventional.) And finally, we're joined by game designer and Twitch streamer Nina Freeman (twitch.tv/ninamarie), designer of Cibele—a game about love, sex, and the internet. Listen to hear Nina and Fahey discuss some of their gaming romances from years past.

A big part of being a game developer is being in-between big projects. Sometimes, the in-between phase isn't just a few days or months, and it can feel like you're losing steam if you're not kicking off the next big game. Regardless of the timing, there are always small things you can do to improve yourself and your work if you need/want to use that time, without instantly embarking on another years long development cycle. This talk will explore some ways Nina Freeman, an indie game designer, has dealt with these challenges personally. She'll share some ways she found to make small improvements to her career, workflow and creative momentum, without actually starting a new game project (until she was really ready!) How do you open your game with a bang, hold the player's attention through hours of gameplay, and wrap things up in a way that feels satisfying and complete? We sure the heck don't know, but special guest Nina Freeman (Cibele, Tacoma, how do you Do it?) does! In this episode, we discuss game introductions, how difficulty progression and story can both drive player engagement, the value of vignette-style storytelling, the way that sports tell stories, and whether games even need endings, plus lots more incisive and indecisive discussion about your favorite games!
It's like rain on your podcasting day. It's when a train goes by, and you can't hear what I say. It's the hammer blows, that ruin your take. And who woulda thought, it figures. Despite a variety of exciting sonic interruptions, Steve and Nina soldier on to talk through her work a s Nuovo Award-winning indie game designer of titles like how do you Do It?, Cibele, and Lost Memories Dot Net, and her experience becoming a level designer on Tacoma at Fullbright. Pull up a chair, settle in, and don't let the distant hooting throw you.

Josh, Ruben, and Sarah perform a hat trick by all playing games with a female lead. Ruben chills with his robo-pals in Horizon: Zero Dawn. Josh gets chills from the voices in his head during Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Sarah is decidedly unchill during the jaw-clenching, finger-swiping combat in Severed. Other honorable mentions include NieR: Automata and Nex Machina. We goofed and couldn't play the FGOTW this time, but we WILL play Lost Memories Dot Net by Nina Freeman and Aaron Freedman for next time. We also binge Avatar the Last Airbender, Game of Thrones, and the graphic novel Montress in this week's Out of Bounds. Music: "Intro" by Slime Girls, "The Runaway" by Kronstudios

This week's episode looks at the game Cibele and Bogost's term: empathy. Cibele, like many of Nina Freeman's other games, is orientated towards the female player. Because of this, we thought it would be interesting to see how male and female players react to the game and how empathy plays a part in these reactions. Included are an interview with a male and our personal opinions of the game, as well as an analysis of empathy.
Cibele is Nina Freeman's autobiographical look at a first experience of love in an online space. So, it seems somewhat fitting on the day after Valentine's Day for the Moving Pixels podcast to consider what we can learn about romance and courtship through a video game.
Laura and Raygan discuss Cibele by Nina Freeman and Star Maid Games. Autobiographical and naturalistic to a fault, Cibele tells the story of game designer Nina's first romance (?) with a boy she meets in...
Matt and David play Cibele, an autobiographical internet love story by Nina Freeman.
Game Designer Nina Freeman explains how Star Maid Games' Cibele uses a virtual desktop and a faux-MMO to tell a story about the complicated (and sometimes hasty) relationships of the internet generation.
In this episode, Adam Saltsman interviews indie game developer Nina Freeman, who is best known for her personal vignette games How Do You Do It?, Freshman Year, and the upcoming Cibele. She is currently working at Fullbright as a level designer on the upcoming game Tacoma. They discuss why all VR games are about sitting in chairs, how a background in poetry influences her work, and how to write about your own personal flaws in a game.
