Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticAnalytic Dreamz dives into "Batman: Arkham Shadow," released on October 21, 2024, as a sequel to Arkham Origins. Set in Gotham's Blackgate Penitentiary during a Fourth of July crisis, the game features The Rat King as the main antagonist leading a chaos-spreading cult. Experience classic Arkham combat adapted for VR, with gesture-based attacks, stealth, and detective mode through Metroidvania-style exploration. Unique gameplay includes switching between Batman and Bruce Wayne's undercover persona, Matches Malone, in a first-person perspective. The voice cast includes Roger Craig Smith as Batman, alongside Troy Baker, Elijah Wood, and Tara Strong. Exclusively on Meta Quest 3 & 3S, developed by Camouflaj with Rocksteady's support, it's free with Quest 3/3S until April 30, 2025. Despite some launch bugs, it's celebrated for its VR immersion, selling over a million copies by February 2025, and receiving an 87/100 on Metacritic. However, exclusivity and technical issues have sparked controversy. Analytic Dreamz discusses the game's impact on the VR market, potential future titles, and whether it sets a new standard for VR gaming. This week we have a delightful doubleheader. First up we have Ryan Payton, director of Batman: Arkham Shadow. I've been following Ryan's career since he founded his studio Camouflaj back in 2011 back when I was doing stories about the rise of crowdfunding and here we are on the cusp of 2025 talking about the greatest game to be released on the Meta Quest platform so far.In this conversation we get deep into the storytelling that drives the action of Batman: Arkham Shadow, which is some of the best I've encountered in any video game in years. With that in mind, we avoid spoilers for almost half the conversation. Spoilers start at 19:23 of the pod and end at 37:20. We get into some of the big character beats. So consider yourself forewarned. Then we settle in for a long chat about the state of XR with friend of the show Alex Coulombe — chatting it up about everything from the Unreal Engine classes he's teaching to folks who are working with the Apple Vision Pro to the recreation of the Halcyon — aka the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser — an open source project in Unreal that he's been helping to lead pretty much since he got back from visiting the ship.SHOW NOTESBatman: Arkham ShadowCamouflajRépubliqueGet Cast In A Dream Role In ‘Batman: Arkham Shadow' (The NoPro Review)A Christmas Carol VRGitHub - AgileLens/HalcyonVRAlex Coulombe (@ibrews.bsky.social) — BlueskyAlex Coulombe Presents Unreal Engine TrainingThe (Unofficial) Unreal Engine Podcast - YouTubeThe Weeknd's ‘Open Hearts' Drops On Apple Vision ProThe Next Stage Immersive Summit Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticNotorious Mass Effect: Dive into Batman: Arkham ShadowA VR return to Arkham's dark beginningsThis segment of Notorious Mass Effect delves into the shadows of Gotham City with Batman: Arkham Shadow, the latest installment in the Arkhamverse designed exclusively for Meta Quest 3.Building on Legacy:Arkham Shadow aims to recapture the essence of Rocksteady's iconic trilogy, particularly the atmosphere and psychological horror of Arkham Asylum. Developed by Camouflaj, the studio behind Iron Man VR, the game leverages the expertise of Rocksteady veterans for an authentic Arkham experience.A Younger Dark Knight:Set between Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum, Shadow features a less experienced, more arrogant Batman. Witness the origins of iconic villains like Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, Ratcatcher, and a young Jim Gordon. The primary antagonist is Ratcatcher, leading a fanatical cult that throws Gotham into chaos.VR Immersion:Prepare for an intense first-person VR experience. Engage in classic Batman activities like gliding, detective work, and brutal combat, all heightened by VR's immersive nature. The game promises exploration, boss battles, investigations, and cinematics, reminiscent of Arkham Asylum's structure. Expect an open-world environment with focused areas for exploration and hidden secrets.Respecting the Legacy:Camouflaj understands the weight of the Arkhamverse. Ryan Payton, the studio head, emphasizes the challenge and privilege of working within the established lore while having the freedom to explore narrative gaps. The team is dedicated to maintaining the series' high standards and interconnectedness. What to Expect Next:A full gameplay reveal is anticipated at Gamescom this August. The recent Summer Game Fest trailer confirmed the return of Roger Craig Smith as Batman and showcased key villains like Scarecrow and Dr. Harleen Quinzel (soon-to-be Harley Quinn).Mark Your Calendars:Batman: Arkham Shadow is slated for a Fall 2024 release, exclusively on Meta Quest 3.A Descent into Darkness:The game is described as having a nightmarish, apocalyptic atmosphere. VR's first-person perspective and horror-focused elements have the potential to make this the scariest Arkham game yet.The Verdict:Batman: Arkham Shadow offers a thrilling return to the series' roots with a fresh VR perspective. Exploring Batman's formative years and the origins of iconic villains, the game boasts a strong development team and a commitment to the franchise's legacy. Gear up for an immersive and potentially terrifying experience in the dark heart of Gotham.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Season 2 - Episode 5/10 Alexander O. Smith—who goes by Alex—is a translator, writer, and photographer living in Kamakura, Japan. As a translator, he's worked on games like Final Fantasy 12, novels in the fantasy, sci-fi, and mystery genres, and manga. He's written for Magic: The Gathering, DeNA mobile games, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and is currently writing at game studio Camouflaj on an unannounced VR title. Alex chose to chat about the sci-fi novel—which later became a blockbuster movie staring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow—All You Need Is Kill, by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and translated from Japanese by Joseph Reeder and edited by Alexander O. Smith. "When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji's escape, or to his final death?"
