A very sleepy Matt and a very inspired PushingUpRoses welcome an incredible guest onto the show to talk about one of the weirder games we've ever played. Musician, video producer and hella talented dude Neil Cicierega is on the show to talk about playing adventure games as 90's kid -- your dad bringing home shareware adventure games to install on your Windows 3.1 PC and the entire family puzzling over it over weeks, months, and years -- and how to pass that experience on to your kids.We also do a surprisingly DEEP dive into a bizarre 1993 game Cliff Bleszinski designed in Visual Basic when he was 17, called Dare to Dream. It goes... places. Hello All! Another week, another rant, but not as heated. As you can tell by the title its about Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, and boy am I not happy. We also had a state of play from Sony, Microsoft gutted Blizzard, and Mass Effect is headed to Destiny. Meanwhile The Thunderbolts loses several stars, Supergirl is found, Denis Villeneuve has plans for Dune 3. Also, there was an issue with my microphone this week, so that will explain the poor audio quality.
This week in your single video game podcast that releases a single episode per week (most of the time) that covers industry news, new releases (often) and has smart thoughts and analysis (we try), we have Cliff Bleszinski waiting on a call from Microsoft, Ste cancels Netflix in anger, Hideaki Itsuno doesn't like fast travel and the Switch successor brags an 8" (screen). We also have a Pocket Gamer report and Charlesbot points the finger at fat cat bosses! Plus in our exclusive podcast intro section, Simon gives us a history of Phillip Schofield while Ste shows us a "behind the curtain" view of virtual studio use and the perils therein! In 2021, the global games market generated over $180 billion in revenue-bigger than movies and music combined-and is projected to hit over $200 billion in 2022. Yet despite being a global economic juggernaut and having massive cultural impact, there hasn't been a definitive insider account about the industry. Until now. Enter legendary videogame designer Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski and his rollicking, colorful memoir Control Freak.A twenty-five-year veteran of the industry, Cliff shipped his first commercial title, Jazz Jackrabbit, before graduating high school. During his long tenure at Epic Games, he became design director and was a key visionary behind the bestselling franchises Unreal and Gears of War and lent his expertise to the global obsession Fortnite. As Cliff writes, "no one is weirder than a nerd with money." In Control Freak, we follow his life from the 80s as a shy, awkward acne-riddled teen bullied by classmates and coping with the sudden loss of his father to a flamboyant personality in the gamer world who flourishes and connects with his flock of fellow nerds. His career takes off with massive hits and catapults him to a life as a hot rod-driving celebrity rubbing shoulders with Bill Gates and appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.Control Freak pops the hood on the gaming industry and shines a light inside. Cliff shares what it's like to design a game: the late nights chugging Mountain Dew and shooting the sh*t with coworkers, the epiphanies so exhilarating he has to run into someone's office to say it out loud, the rapid-fire problem-solving when something goes wrong (and something always goes wrong), the strain those long hours and the pressure takes on individuals and relationships, the pitfalls of an industry riddled with sexism, cyberbullying, and a lack of representation among both designers and the characters they create, and yet the incredible highs of launching a new game on stage to an audience of thousands and watching it become a phenomenon.

Cliff Bleszinski's Gears of War took gaming warfare to a new level. The Epic (see what we did there? ;)) tale of Marcus Fenix and his quest for redemption has led to many sequels and it being one of the biggest online franchises to date. James tackles the initial game's conception and what makes the solo campaign and online modes so enjoyable. With plenty of trivia thrown in to boot, Gears fans, you're not gonna wanna miss this. Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski, the lead designer on the "Gears of War" video games, talks with Gavin Purcell about his years in the gaming industry, how he discovered a passion for the theater in high school, and his main obsession outside of games: Broadway. This passion led him to become a co-producer of the hit show Hadestown, which won eight Tony Awards in 2019. Then, Cliff and Gavin are joined by theater producer Hunter Arnold, whose credits include Hadestown, Kinky Boots, and Dear Evan Hansen. Hunter talks about how he decides what to produce, why he never knows if a play is going to be a hit, and a game he plays with a fellow producer: Describe the plot of a hit musical with the worst elevator pitch ever.
