POPULARITY
Medra is the CEO and founder of the Creator Jam, which is a non-profit that's been consistently organizing weekly and monthly collaborative-building events within the social VR platform of Resonite (and originally within Neos VR) since June 2, 2019. Resonite's technological architecture allows for the rendering and editing of content in real-time in a collaborative fashion, which has led to a rich maker culture within Resonite as embodied by the Creator Jam Community. Neos VR and then Resonite were both developed by Tomáš Mariančík (aka Frooxius). When I interviewed Mariančík in 2015 at GDC, I had regarded him as one of the few "mad geniuses" of VR. He had won 3rd place in two game jams at that point including 3rd place in the Oculus & IndieCade 2013 VR Jam with SightLine, and then 3rd place in the Leap Motion 2014 3D Jam with World of Comenius. Then he would go on to win 3rd place in the Oculus & Samsung 2015 VR Jam with Neos The Universe after participating in the Rothenberg River Accelerator at the invitation of Tipatat Chennavasin. When I interviewed Chennavasin in Spring of 2015, he talked about recruiting Mariančík for the Rothenberg Ventures River Accelerator by saying, The mandate I had was, find awesome people in VR and support them and help them. I got to do that. Sightline the Chair was one of my favorite demos of all time in VR. When I saw that, I was never so jealous or angry. I was like, "This guy's brilliant, smarter than me. Oh my god! This is the demo I wish I was smart enough to think of doing." And I fortunately found his contact. He was in the Czech Republic, Tomas. I sent them a Skype message and it was just this amazing thing where I had to explain what's a VC, what's an accelerator program, how can it help them, what are they doing, and they were just kind of shocked, a little suspicious. But fortunately, after a couple talks, we got them out here and it's just been amazing to see them, support them, and help them flourish as entrepreneurs, but also developers and innovators in the VR space. After participating in the Rothenberg Ventures River VR incubator, then Mariančík and other Solirax co-founder Karel Hulec started working on his deep vision of Neos VR. That following spring Mariančík wrote a blog post titled "How VR became my day job because I didn't give up" in what he described as the "Frooxius origin story" to r/Oculus. He details how difficult it was to make it as a full-time VR developer. Despite his many successes in different game jams, he wasn't really receiving a lot of support from Oculus. Oculus always knew how to support game developers, but didn't quite know what to do with the more education-focused and experimental apps exploring the boundaries of perception that Mariančík was working on. And to top it all off, the depth of vision of how Mariančík was thinking the medium was also probably 5-10 years ahead of anyone else. He reflected on this in his origin story post by saying, The trouble is that Neos is a very complex and expansive idea and requires a lot of time to work through all the aspects of it and thorough consideration to make sure everything fits neatly together, because I needed to find a set of basic elements which are both very simple and elegant, but interact in so many ways that they provide extremely flexible, but also consistent system. I always know what to do from moment to moment, but there's just a lot of things to do. So I keep working for months, piecing the system and working through it all. But before the system comes together, there isn't much to show for it. What I found most difficult is watching as everyone else is showing off their VR projects with quickly made solutions, but with a fraction of functionality, gaining attention, winning awards, participating at events, demoing in public, getting invited to VR shows and podcasts, while I'm piecing together my big vision in the shadows.
In light of Summer Game Fest, we dive into conventions and gaming events, IRL and virtual. What we've been to and where we'd like to see events go in the future. How have gaming conventions changed over time, and how does the audience affect the programming? 0:00 - What we're playing: Dragon Quest III, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Zac); Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto V, The Sims 1 (Bryan); Dave the Diver, Steamworld Dig, The Sims 4 (Xan). 21:18 - Our personal experience with conventions: E3, anime & music conventions, game reselling conventions, Tokyo Game Show. 32:51 - The prototypical "gaming convention": E3. Its beginnings as a tradeshow for retailers, to press conferences that broke news to the public, to its influence on more social events. Experience at D.I.C.E., IndieCade. 40:08 - Bigger publishers doing their own virtual shows to replace their E3 press conferences, and now SGF trying to round them up again. Where do indie developers fit in? 47:27 - The social function of conventions: hanging out with friends, meeting like-minded gamers with similar interests. Community! How that purpose got lost, and how do we get it back? 55:13 - Virtual events, live-streamed showcases: a replacement for conventions in some ways but not others. SGF, Wholesome Direct, Nintendo Direct, Sony State of Play, etc. 1:02:08 - Retro computer/gaming conventions, serving gamers as they age. Celebration of gaming culture & history rather than products. 1:15:37 - SoCal Gaming Expo and panels we want at cons. 1:20:17 - Xan's request for remote events and playable demos at home, like Steam Next Fest. AbleGamers Gala. Online events for accessbility as well as a platform for indie devs. Bryan - @analogdarling on Twitch, Twitter, and Instagram Xander - @xanwithaplan on Twitch and Twitter Zac - @zacaroniandcheez on Twitch, @GaijinWota on Twitter and Instagram Contact and Episode Suggestions - GameDeep.fun Theme Song by Robotprins

Florida's Reefs Are Vanishing. Can Scientists Save Them? This was a bad year for Florida's coral reefs. Since the 1970s, reef cover in the Florida Keys has decreased by 90%. Those remaining reefs have been subjected to water temperatures higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, alongside other threats like disease and ocean acidification. This is a big problem for the largest reef in the continental U.S., which plays an important role in protecting the shorelines from erosion and storms.Scientists are scrambling to preserve as much of the reef as possible. One method marine biologists are focused on is selectively breeding corals in labs. Scientists look for the specimens most resilient to heat stress, then breed them together to create hardy offspring. Those spawn are then implanted into the reef, with hopes of bolstering the existing structure.Vox environmental reporter Benji Jones joins Ira to talk about his dives to Florida's Pickles Reef, and the differences he saw between this year and last year. Then, Ira speaks with marine biologist Andrew Baker at the University of Miami about his efforts to bolster Florida's reefs. The Ocean Is A Climate AllyDid you know that the ocean absorbs about a quarter of all CO2 emissions? And about 90% of excess heat? It's the largest carbon sink we have—and one of our biggest allies in the climate movement.Ira talks with Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, marine biologist and co-founder of the non-profit Urban Ocean Lab, as well as the climate initiative The All We Can Save Project. They chat about climate solutions—like the newly launched Climate Corps—the power of the ocean, and steps forward. Dr. Johnson is also the curator for Climate Futurism, an art exhibition at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, New York. Feeling Hopeless About Climate Change? Try Playing These Video GamesThis segment, originally from 2022, was re-aired this week.Five years ago, Stephanie Barish was tired of the public's attitude about climate change. “Most people at that time were just so negative about climate,” she said. “It was doom and destruction, and I thought, wow, to make positive change, you have to really look at this from a solutions perspective.” Stephanie is the founder and CEO of Indiecade, an organization that supports indie video game developers and hosts events like the Climate Jam—the goal of which was to change the gloomy public narrative around climate change. So, with the help of organizations like Earth Games, participants around the globe gather every year to make video games about climate change optimism, solutions, and justice.Teams can also consult with subject matter experts, like Dargan Frierson, an associate professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, and also a judge for the Climate Jam. If teams wonder what climate change would look like on a different planet, they can go to him for answers. “We always look for scientific accuracy,” he said. “I think it's very important to keep things within the realm of possibility, even when you're looking at fiction.”Read the rest at sciencefriday.com. It's Climate Week in New York City this week, which brings together hundreds of events, all aimed at encouraging conversation and participation and action around our climate crisis. So this week, we wanted to play two stories of artists grappling with and integrating climate change into their work. The first is about a gaming competition called the Climate Jam, where teams compete to build video games about climate change in just one week. Universe of Art host D. Peterschmidt talked with Indiecade organizers and the winning team about their game, and how they're working to overcome climate apathy. The second is an interview with folk musician and independent scholar Daniel Bachman. His latest album, Almanac Behind, is a meditative instrumental reflection on the extreme weather events in Bachman's home state of Virginia—using actual field recordings of those events. He also talks about his work as an independent scholar, and how the traditions of Appalachian folklore influenced his view of the album as a climatological historical document. Universe of Art is hosted and produced by D. Peterschmidt, who also wrote the music. Our show art was illustrated by Abelle Hayford. Support for Science Friday's science and arts coverage comes from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Do you have an idea for a future episode of Universe of Art? Some Grasses Can Stop Lead From Spreading In Soil Lead left behind in soil from mining and smelting poses a major health risk to people who live nearby. Researchers in Nebraska and Kansas believe plant life and organic material can limit lead's spread. In parts of the Midwest where lead mining and smelting lasted for over a century, communities are still dealing with toxic waste left behind by the industry. Lead, a dangerous neurotoxin, persists in the environment, including in water and soil, where it can pose a threat to the health of people living nearby. The risk is especially acute for children, who can unintentionally ingest lead by putting their hands in their mouths and whose brains and bodies are still developing. It can be spread to other areas, like yards and schools, by rainfall, and can also taint aquifers or vegetables in gardens, making them harmful to consume. Now researchers are working to limit the impact of lead in the environment on people, and they believe they've found a promising solution: Plant life. Phytostabilization involves moving lead from soil into the roots, stems and leaves of plants to prevent it from spreading and to limit people's contact with it. “One of the goals of phytostabilization is to take the site with lead and put it in a stable state, so that the risk is reduced, and the issues related to lead in the soil can be managed,” said Larry Erickson, a professor emeritus at Kansas State University and former director of the university's Center for Hazardous Substance Research. A High School Student Invented An Affordable Brain-Reading Prosthetic Artificial limb technology has come a long way since the first prosthetic—a big toe made of wood and leather developed in ancient Egypt. Today's cutting-edge robotic limbs use mind-control and even give users a sense of touch, helping them feel sensations like a warm cup of coffee or a mushy banana. Still, these state-of-the-art prosthetics often involve invasive brain surgeries and can be exorbitantly expensive. Hearing of these issues, one teenager set out to create a solution. Seventeen-year-old Benjamin Choi has developed a non-invasive, affordable prosthetic arm. His Star Wars-inspired technology reads a user's mind with only two sensors—one on the forehead and the other clipped to the earlobe. And he doesn't plan on stopping there. He sees his work in artificial intelligence expanding to help ALS patients, wheelchair users, and beyond. Ira speaks with Benjamin Choi from McLean, Virginia about how he developed this arm and what it means to be a young innovator. New Immunotherapy Shows Promise Far Beyond Cancer CAR T cell therapy, a type of immunotherapy in which a patient's own immune cells are modified to create a hybrid immune cell that destroys cancer cells, was first developed over a decade ago. Now, researchers are continuing to find success in treating new types of blood cancers with the therapy, and are working on applying the technology to solid state cancers like those of the pancreas and brain. Scientists are also at the early stages of testing CAR T cells to treat autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) and lupus. Ira talks with Dr. Carl June, one of the pioneers of CAR T cell therapy, a professor of immunotherapy and director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at the University of Pennsylvania, based in Philadelphia. In this episode of Board Gaming with Education, Dustin sits down with Christienne Hinz, who he met at IndieCade, an independent games festival over the Summer. Christienne is a history professor at Southern Illinois University where she incorporates gamification and world-building elements into the classes she teaches. The two discuss the challenges of introducing game-based learning to a classroom and share tips on effectively implementing such programs. An avid DnD player, Christienne also shares her path to getting into games based education, meeting members of the pre-existing gamification community, and her hesitation to start the process of introducing games to her large classrooms. We first met Jeff and Andy Crocker at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in 2018, where their piece Escape From Godot turned the festival on its ear for a whole day, only to fade into the night. Since then Escape... has popped up at Indiecade, the Denver Film Fest, and will soon be a featured selection of the HERE Summit & Festival in Pasadena this March. Host Noah Nelson talks with Jeff & Andy, aka Mister and Mischief, and Escape... and their new work The Builder and the Dove.
My guest on today's episode is the wonderful Nina Freeman. Currently working on Tacoma at The Fullbright Company, Nina's previous games include Cibele and the IGF and Indiecade finalist How Do You Do It? We talk her life long love of Final Fantasy X-2, the absurdity of playing Sims with no context, how cities make scenes, the Fullbright videogame mixtape, how to quit Final Fantasy Online for real this time and why videogames (mostly) suck at sex. Indiecade always offers a nice respite from the wall of undulating human flesh and heat that is the rest of the E3 show floor. The loose confederation of independent developers often produces compelling and bizarre gaming experiences outside of the big studio system. TendAR is the most compelling example of this out of this year's batch. It is, simply put, a pet fish that feeds on human emotions through augmented reality. I can't really explain why this is a thing, but it is.
Hi everyone! As you may know, I did a talk at Indiecade '17 last month. It went really well, so I thought I'd piece together a lot of that talk into a podcast episode to share with you guys. Remember your favorite stuffed toy, when you were a kid? What if that teddy bear, dog, cat or otherwise had really been able to interact with you? Meet Octobo, a blue plush octopus. He's equipped with sensors and designed to work through your tablet. And his goal, says creator Yuting Su, is to get families playing together and sharing stories. Yuting is the founder and CEO of Thinker-Tinker creative lab, in Los Angeles. On her website, she describes herself as a "thinker, tinker and dreamer". For Yuting, Octobo represents the latest in a series of interactive projects. With professional degrees in both the medical field and interactive media design, her past work has included "Curiouser and Curiouser", an interactive pop-up book based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; and the augmented-reality urban puzzle game "pocketOULO". Currently, Yuting is planning a Kickstarter campaign for Octobo, which has already garnered award nominations and been selected for the Electronic Entertainment Expo's 2016 IndieCade. Yuting, who recently exhibited Octobo at TechDay L.A. 2017, shared the story of creating her interactive octopus, some of the resources that worked well for her, during the creative process and her thoughts on the ways she'd like her stuffed toy to improve her young customers' lives. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Yuting first became interested in creating interactive experiences; How she and her team came to create Octobo; Why Yuting decided on an octopus for her interactive plush toy; The steps she and her team took, from coming up with a concept to making Octobo a reality; An important point of focus for Yuting and her team--and for any startup--in developing a new product; How Octobo works; One of the best reactions Yuting and her team saw, when exhibiting Octobo to young prospective clients; Resources Yuting found helpful (including an innovative "new-ways-to-play" website that may inspire your next fantastic idea!).
