Tom Keogh has a great story to tell. Their family has been farming the land for over three generations, supplying the fresh produce market with potatoes grown on the farm in North County Dublin. Faced with falling demand for fresh spuds, Tom took a bold step, he began making crisps by hand in a shed on the farm. That small experiment became Keogh's Crisps, now one of Ireland's best-loved food brands and a growing global export. Along the way, Tom has helped to revive interest in the humble potato, champion Irish produce and shine a light on the food security challenges facing Irish horticulture today. In this episode of Food Matters, Tom talks to Mick Kelly of GIY about the heritage of Irish spuds, the ups and downs of launching a food brand, and why we need to protect the future of vegetable growing in Ireland.

In a way we've been teasing this episode since our first, as we've treated you to a wee taste of Rosa Nutty's music at the opening of every Irish Stew episode. Now we go beyond the snippet and follow Rosa through the emotional landscape she travels in song. Her first album after a five-year absence from the recording studio, World So Blue is getting rave reviews, like this from The Irish Times:“Now she's back with a long-in-gestation debut album that weaves a kind of spell that will calm the jittery nerves of this weekend's ghosts and spirits… this sense of optimism in the face of impending gloom seals whatever abrasions may have resided in Nutty's creative mindset over the past three years.”Join us as Rosa tells of her bilingual Irish-English childhood, her immersion in the visual arts, the influences on her songwriting, the power of letting go, her “semi-live” recording style, and the exhilaration of live performance. And as she traces her journey from rural North County Dublin to rural Cavan, we'll also hear all-too-brief segments from several of her songs.Despite what she jokingly calls her “sad girl music,” there's optimism in her atmospheric songs, best expressed in the title song “World Still Blue,” a hopeful sense that despite the turmoil and hardships of this world, from another perspective, say the perspective of an astronaut looking back on to earth from space, our world can still be “blue, calm and full of potential.” Links· Linktree: https://linktr.ee/rosanutty· Website: http://www.rosanutty.com/· Twitter: https://twitter.com/RosaNutty· Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rosanutty/· Bandcamp: https://rosanutty.bandcamp.com/album/world-still-blue· Merchandise: https://rosanutty.bandcamp.com/merch

One of the most important buildings in terms of Irish history or archaeology is located in North County Dublin. Strange as it may sound, this building is not very old. It actually only dates from the later 20th century and it was originally an electronics factory. However it is now owned by the National Museum of Ireland and houses millions of artifacts amassed over the decades. This fascinating complex, which measures over 200,000 sq feet, is not open to the public. However last Autumn when I was organising the upcoming Irish History Summit in association with the National Museum I got an exclusive tour. In this podcast recorded behind the scenes at the museum you will hear the stories behind some incredible artifacts. Nigel Monaghan tells the story behind a 4000 million year old meteorite that was an ornament in an Irish farmhouse for decades. Later in the episode Brenda Malone explains the remarkable story of an Irish man who served in the RAF during the World War II and captured some pivotal moments of the conflict on camera.
