On this special bonus episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with a Lipps Service veteran, longtime friend, and blistering rock ‘n' roller — Luke Spiller. Famously known as the electric frontman of British rock band The Struts, Luke is getting ready for the release of his debut solo record, Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes and Wine. The two get into everything behind the making of the new album, which is slated to be released on April 25. They discuss Luke's journey of going solo, how he met Scott, and why he wanted to make his own record outside of the band. He talks about his relationships with Jason Falkner of Jellyfish (Scott's favorite band!) and the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters. He also tells the stories behind a few of the new songs, including the title-track and “Devil In Me.” To close, Luke lists his top 5 solo albums from a lead singer of a band. Lyricism has always been one of the core elements of Hip Hop. While the mainstream juggernauts sometimes allow us to forget that with very easily consumable rap, it's wildly refreshing to discover younger artists who still focus on the sophistication of substance in music. FUNERAL Ant Bell has been one of these said artists since we learned about his music a few years back and it only seems like he just keeps getting better and better. His latest project “There's Glory In the Fire, Vol. 2: The Wind Beneath My Wings” has earned him even more praise amongst his peers and a 5/5 score on our #RedCupsAndRatings segment which was one of very few this year alone‼️This week join #CharlieMaSheen, #KASH, & #Bellez, as we welcome the South End native back to the couch! Dr. Joseph Ewoodzie weighs in…We continue to examine which voices who are valued in hip hop by zooming out and considering all of its historical influences.Tyler Bunzey offers some important cultural context around Southern rappers and the performance of gender in hip hop – how do different US cultures shape that performance within the genre? He also breaks down how gender and sexuality are racialized – why is queerness considered to be a white thing if Marsha P Johnson was at the forefront of LGBTQ rights movement?Referenced on this episode:Interview with Black ViolinBlack Violin's “Stereotypes”Tyler Bunzey's Hip Hop Sublime theoryDr. Ewoodzie's seminal book Break Beats in the BronxBig Freedia challenges hip hop as we know itDaphne Brooks's Liner Notes for the RevolutionCheck out our last Beneath the MASK

Sugar Hill Gang or Band? This group's seminal single set the tone for our understanding of hip hop culture in the mainstream, but it sacrificed the culture's wholeness along the way… We're continuing our conversation pondering the performance of masculinity in music as an art form and in music as a business.Masculinity Scholar and Accountability Strategist Nalo Zidan joins the pod this week to talk masculinity and capitalism within hip hop and shares indispensable wisdom on what liberation may look like…Samantha offers a snapshot of the beginnings of commercial hip hop. How did we get from that DJ Kool Herc party that started it all to “Rapper's Delight”?We examine how the performance of masculinity thrives in commercial hip hop and why capitalism benefits from music upholding bravado over vulnerability.Thankfully, there are some artists disrupting the performance of masculinity, but why are they on the fringe of the mainstream?Listen to Nalo dive deep into how our classist system, capitalism, and the performance of masculinity helps hip hop moguls evade accountability. Acknowledging the impact of patriarchy connects us to the need for social justice.Nalo stresses how divesting from capitalism allows us to regain our imagination and think of a life beyond patriarchy…and how it's an individual choice we must consistently make. Now we go beyond the snippet and follow Rosa through the emotional landscape she travels in song. Her first album after a five-year absence from the recording studio, World So Blue is getting rave reviews, like this from The Irish Times:“Now she's back with a long-in-gestation debut album that weaves a kind of spell that will calm the jittery nerves of this weekend's ghosts and spirits… this sense of optimism in the face of impending gloom seals whatever abrasions may have resided in Nutty's creative mindset over the past three years.”Join us as Rosa tells of her bilingual Irish-English childhood, her immersion in the visual arts, the influences on her songwriting, the power of letting go, her “semi-live” recording style, and the exhilaration of live performance. And as she traces her journey from rural North County Dublin to rural Cavan, we'll also hear all-too-brief segments from several of her songs.Despite what she jokingly calls her “sad girl music,” there's optimism in her atmospheric songs, best expressed in the title song “World Still Blue,” a hopeful sense that despite the turmoil and hardships of this world, from another perspective, say the perspective of an astronaut looking back on to earth from space, our world can still be “blue, calm and full of potential.” Links·       Linktree: https://linktr.ee/rosanutty·       Website: http://www.rosanutty.com/·       Twitter: https://twitter.com/RosaNutty·       Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rosanutty/·       Bandcamp: https://rosanutty.bandcamp.com/album/world-still-blue·       Merchandise: https://rosanutty.bandcamp.com/merch
