Bringing the magic of Skerries to Luxembourg! Jean McDonald, Ambassador of Ireland to Luxembourg, arrived here at the end of August along with her husband Greg. The two met in Paris and have lived in Dublin and Geneva where Ambassador McDonald was Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN for Ireland. Since arriving in Luxembourg, Ambassador McDonald has been carried on a wave of Irish Community events, plus integrating into Luxembourg more generally. The vibrant Irish community here reminds her of her hometown of Skerries. This town, north of County Dublin, recently made headlines due to English anthropologist Daniel Miller, who spent almost a year and a half living there concluding “It is hard to find another currently existing society that is demonstrably better.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/02/has-irish-town-found-secret-the-good-life-skerries Ambassador McDonald sees the similarities with Luxembourg: “A sense of people proud of where they are from and giving back”. Indeed, we go on to talk about the Irish spirit of volunteering. Coincidentally, Ambassador McDonald was studying at Trinity College Dublin when Ambassador Ensch was also there, and she is now the Ambassador for Luxembourg in Ireland! Ambassador McDonald's life as a diplomat is thanks to her father (RIP) who cut out an article in the Irish Times for recruitment to the department of Foreign Affairs. We talk about what advice she has for those who may want to follow this path in life. Ambassador Jean suggests you find people you'd like to emulate. “Those who seems the most effortless - they've done the most homework” If you want to discover more links between Ireland and Luxembourg, you can read about St. Willibrord. https://carlowcathedral.ie/our-parish/st-willibrord/ Ambassador McDonald also visited the University of Luxembourg which now has a Vacataire Lecturer in Irish Literature, Dr James Gallacher, which he developed No doubt in her tenure as Ambassador to Luxembourg, she will spread some Skerries magic amongst us. Ceadúnais ginte leictreachais le bronnadh ar cheithre thogra mara. It was announced today which companies are to be granted a license to generate electricity from the wind in the open sea. Fógraíodh inniu cé na comhlachtaí a bhfuil ceadúnas le bronnadh orthu le leictreachas a ghiniúint ón ngaoth san fharraige amuigh. The licenses were auctioned – the first such auction ever in the State – and EirGrid announced the winners this evening. Cuireadh na ceadúnais ar ceant – an chéad cheant dá leithéid riamh sa Stát – agus d'fhógair EirGrid na buaiteoirí tráthnóna. EirGrid is the State body responsible for the national transmission of electricity. Is é EirGrid an comhlacht Stáit atá freagrach as an tarchur náisiúnta leictreachais. A provisional announcement made today, however, and EirGrid will not officially confirm the licenses until next month. Fógra sealadach a rinneadh inniu, ámh, agus ní dhearbhóidh EirGrid na ceadúnais go hoifigiúil go dtí an mhí seo chugainn. All the companies that have succeeded today must also apply for planning permission. Caithfidh na comhlachtaí ar fad ar éirigh leo inniu cur isteach ar chead pleanála freisin. Among the proposals for which a license is to be granted, there is one called the Dublin Array which will be located in the Banks of Cise and Bray in the Irish Sea, and which has an allocation of 824 megawatts. I measc na dtograí a bhfuil ceadúnas le tabhairt dóibh, tá ceann dá ngairtear Dublin Array a bheas suite i mBainc na Cise agus Bhré i Muir Éireann, agus a bhfuil 824 meigeavata le lamháil air. Further south, another license is to be given to the Codling Wind Park between the Graystones and the town of Wicklow with an allocation of 1,300 megawatts - the largest of all the proposals. Níos faide ó dheas, tá ceadúnas eile le tabhairt do lucht Codling Wind Park idir na Clocha Liatha agus baile Chill Mhantáin a bhfuil 1,300 meigeavata le lamháil dó – an méid is mó as na tograí ar fad. A 500 megawatt license is to be awarded to the North Irish Sea Array proposal off Skerries in north Dublin, and a 400 megawatt license is to be awarded to Skerde Rocks off Iorras Aithneach in Connemara. Tá ceadúnas 500 meigeavata le bronnadh ar thogra North Irish Sea Array amach ó na Sceirí i dtuaisceart Bhaile Átha Cliath, agus tá ceadúnas 400 meigeavata le bronnadh ar lucht Sceirde Rocks amach ó Iorras Aithneach i gConamara. All these projects are to be undertaken by a mix of companies from different countries as well as Ireland – including France and Norway. Is meascán de chomhlachtaí ó thíortha éagsúla chomh maith le hÉirinn atá le tabhairt faoi na tograí seo ar fad – an Fhrainc agus an Iorua ina measc. The companies will pay an average of €86 for each megacar they are allowed. Íocfaidh na comhlachtaí beagán le cois €86 ar an meán as gach meigeavatuair a cheadófar dóibh. Currently, €120 is paid for each megawatt of wholesale electricity. Faoi láthair, is €120 a íoctar as gach meigeavatuair de leictreachas mórdhíola. It was also announced today that an annual community fund is to be established - and will be worth €24 million - as part of EirGrid's contract with the four successful proposals in the auction today. Fógraíodh inniu freisin go bhfuil ciste pobail bliantúil le bunú – agus a mbeidh luach €24 milliún ann – mar chuid de chonradh EirGrid le lucht na gceithre thogra ar éirigh leo sa cheant inniu. The Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Éamon Ryan said that today's auction was extremely positive news for both energy consumers and the country as a whole. Dúirt an tAire Comhshaoil, Aeráide agus Cumarsáide Éamon Ryan gur scéal thar a bheith dearfach a bhí sa cheant inniu do thomhaltóirí fuinnimh agus don tír trí chéile araon.

New research by Switcher.ie has revealed the best Irish towns and cities to work from home. New legislation which gives employees the right to request remote work is expected by the end of the year. With 91% planning to work fully remote or hybrid, Ireland's towns and local economies could also enjoy the benefits of an increasingly mobile workforce. To date 28 of Ireland's 31 local authorities have now secured WiFi4EU vouchers, with 23 securing the maximum of four available and 12 still to go to tender. The Department of Rural and Community Development is providing matched funding of €15,000 for every voucher awarded to Ireland by the EU, effectively doubling the value of the investment. Commenting on this landmark milestone, Philip Clapperton, Sales Director at Magnet +, says: “Magnet+ is delighted to have brought connectivity services to so many towns across Ireland. The multi-location WiFi4EU service will provide previously unavailable Wi-Fi service in these community locations, which will enhance the user experience when visiting these locations. Areas previously affected by a lack of Wi-Fi services can now access reliable, fast and secure internet services at no cost providing incredible ease of access for these areas and boosting all the local economies in these areas. We're excited to grow these networks further to even more areas in the country.”

Guest and storyteller Jen Murphy is a Feminine Embodiment Coach, Mythologist and Anthropologist. She is the creator of Celtic Embodiment, a cutting-edge modality that fuses the ancient wisdom of Celtic Mythology with the emerging field of Feminine Embodiment Coaching, to transform modern life for women. I have the good fortune of being part of Jen's yearlong program, the Celtic Women's Voyage where Jen takes us on an imram, a mystical, embodied journey to the otherworld and to the realms within. Learn more about Jen and her brilliant work at https://www.celticembodiment.com/ (www.celticembodiment.com) Jen comes to KnotWork with her own story, The Skerries Selkie, which is set in Skerries, County Dublin, right beside the Irish Sea. In our deep diving conversation, Jen and I explore: The parallels between the Selkie and An Mhaighdean Mhara, the mermaid How important it is to reclaim the feminine from the patriarchy and recover the lost self  The masculine and feminine energy that exist in all of us and how we leave behind seal skin (the feminine) when we suit up and head off to work and enter the masculine world The problem with “doing the feminine in a masculine way” Valuing doing over being, logic over intuition, linear over the cyclical The bean feasa, the wise woman who comes in to help and heal the mother who has lost herself Sisterhood, rupture and separation, the quest to return to companionship and the arms of the sea. The sacred geometry of the Celtic Embodiment logo, with all of its straight lines and spirals and how evocative it is of this story and these ideas. How systems of oppression can play out in the body Animism: the belief that everything has a soul. The Brehon Law, the original laws of Ireland that protect trees, proving the way that everything had an essence and a soul. The way the body remembers. A book recommendation from Jen: Kimberly Ann Johnson Call of the Wild: How We Heal Trauma, Awaken Our Own Power, and Use it for Good What it means to be a mother of sons (as well as daughters and non-binary children) in a culture with so much trouble with “toxic masculinity” Our show music is a compilation of traditional tunes, including "The College Grove," performed by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy: http://billyandbeth.com/ (http://billyandbeth.com/) Do you want to explore and tell your own stories? On this episode of the Irish History Show we were joined by Gerard Shannon to discuss Seán Russell, the former Chief of Staff of the IRA. Russell continues to be a deeply controversial and divisive figure to the present day and his statue in Fairview Park, near Dublin's city centre, has been frequently vandalised, and at one stage decapitated. Russell joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and fought in the Easter Rising. After being interned in Frongoch, he fought in the War of Independence, rising to become IRA Director of Munitions in 1920. He fought with the Anti - Treaty IRA in the Civil War and was interned by the new Irish government. He remained with IRA after his release and became Quarter Master General. It was his actions during the Second World War that would lead to his continuing notoriety. As chief of staff he oversaw the ill fated bombing campaign in British cities in 1939. In 1940, following a tour of the United States, he travelled to Genoa and then onto Berlin where he held discussions with German military intelligence and received explosives training with the Abwehr. As he was travelling back to Ireland aboard a German U - Boat he suffered a burst stomach ulcer and died. Gerard Shannon is a historian from Skerries in Co. Dublin and a graduate of the School of History and Geography in DCU. He is currently working on a biography of the IRA Chief of Staff during the Civil War, Liam Lynch for Merrion Press. You can find his website at gerardshannon.com Gerard has written two articles on Russell for the Irish Story website which are available here: https://www.theirishstory.com/2020/07/02/the-only-irishman-that-was-incorruptible-sean-russell-and-the-ira-part-one-1893-1930/#.YL_5tvlKjIU https://www.theirishstory.com/2020/07/13/worthy-successor-of-tone-and-casement-sean-russell-and-the-ira-part-two-1931-40/#.YL_52_lKjIU Intro / Outro music “Sliabh” from Aislinn. St. Patrick's Day It's very unlikely we’ll be hitting pubs and restaurants to celebrate St. Patrick this Tuesday. To keep ourselves occupied, Terry McCoy joined Mario to share some food we can make to still celebrate Ireland's Patron Saint. Terry McCoy has been a chef for many years and is fascinated with the story of Saint Patrick. Terry moved to Skerries in the 1970s, where legend has it St. Patrick moved to, living on an island off the Skerries Coast. As a chef, he always wondered what he might have eaten out on the isolated island. Terry spoke to Mario about what food was like in Ireland back then, what influences St. Patrick could have brought to it, and how we'd all be a bit healthier if we ate like the Saint. Have a good think about the pro's and con's of this one... For this weeks 'Up The Poll' Muireann asked listeners if they'd do a house swap with someone from another country for a few months? So you'd pack your bags, up and leave and sleep in someone else's bed. What if it was a house of horrors? But what if it was a dream mansion?! Got plans for the summer? An option for some is to head off for the few months and HOUSE SWAP with someone from another country. For todays #UpThePoll - @MuireannO_C is asking you: Would you House Swap and let strangers live in your house? — Today FM (@TodayFM) March 12, 2019 Today FM listener Karen got in touch to give Muireann to tell her all about her plans to house swap with a house in Alicante and another house in Skerries in Dublin! We know where you live! LISTEN BACK HERE OR CLICK ABOVE:

There was a large scale research study done by Gallup Consulting Group (a hugely credible global research company) this year which shows that the majority of people under 35 years of age do not own any form of shares/equities through investments, pensions or savings. This is in comparison to 2007 when the majority of people under 35 did own some for of equities. The research also demonstrated that the majority of people over 35 years of age held them in 2007 and that today the majority of people over 35 still hold them! It got me thinking! I remember vividly cycling my bike on my way from school when I was about 7 years of age and living in Skerries (yes I originally hale from 'enemy territory!). I was cycling along a quiet street and was passing a row of parked cars on my left. I was probably imagining I was Sean Kelly in the Tour De France and so getting a buzz from cycling past the cars a little too close, and mistakenly clipped one of the rear view mirrors of what I think was a Renault 11! Now i barely clipped it on my little peddler, i didn't even move it or damage it in any way. However that didn't stop what I can only assume was the owner of the car, who happened to be standing on the path beside the car, from letting an almighty roar at me, followed by some sort of fist-waving expression and a brief chase. It all seemed a huge over-reaction and a deliberate attempt to scare a young boy on his bike! Needless to say the harmless young Paddy was terrified and with increased motivation cycled home at a truly speedy pace! Not sure why this was so ingrained in my memory however I do know that for the remainder of that school year I avoided that street altogether for fear of encountering the 'Reno Man' again! I ended up cycling a very long way to and from school and cost myself lot of unnecessary time and concern. That was the first time I experienced being bitten, and then being twice shy about repeating the experience. However I happened to pass the 'scene of the crime' as a teenager and it reminded of that day, but to say the least there was zero fear about encountering the 'Reno Man' again, if anything I was keen to see him so I could tell him what I should have told him that day! On reflection it was OK to feel the fear but it was foolish to act upon it and to then pay the price and the inconvenience for the rest of the year! You might wonder what this has to do with investing in equities (quite rightly!). My take is that when it comes to pensions, investments, savings and all that boring stuff the truth is that many of us got quiet a fright 10 years ago (seems much more recent than that!) when the Global Financial Crisis hit. Anyone that owned equities/investments/pensions during that period felt the fear, the concern and either made a decision to act upon that fear or to do nothing! A typical portfolio fund in an investment, personal or Director's Pension with 80% Equities and 20% Bonds fell by 35% from January 2008 to December 2008. A portfolio with 100% equities fell by 40% in the same period. Forgetting about the fact (yes the FACT!) that they both rebounded by 55 and 70% respectively in the following 12 months, this was a genuinely scary time for investors. Many people made the mistake of getting out of Equities during these temporary declines. They panicked. Some may have been forced to, as in they needed to get their hands on the money for some genuine emergency, but the vast majority who sold their equities during the temporary decline did so out of fear and panic. In order to relive it let's picture a scenario. In 2006 everything is rosy. The Irish economy is booming, the good times are here. Bertie and his merry men are saying that this will last forever, that we're a mighty little country and that we should keep spending and lapping it up! Investments have delivered double-digit growth for past few years (since the tech bubble) and there is no reason to doubt that it will continue. You see your investment or pension pot grow in value from €200,000 to €250,00 over the course of 2005-2006. You are happy, you buy a few more houses, you buy a new car, install a new en-suite, a hot tub Jacuzzi out the back garden. The new decking is looking fabulous and your neighbours are all envious! All is well in the world!! And then WHACK! The global economy collapses, we lose jobs, Joe Duffy is telling us the world is coming to an end, Lehmans Brothers and a few 'big hitters' (non prudent ones obviously!) go bust. Your property empire starts to crumble. Your decking goes mouldy and your hot-tub doesn't get used anymore because you're too busy worrying about things! Your investment/pension pot falls in value by 40%, from €250,000 to €150,000, and continues to fall. You fear for your life savings. What is going On? What Sort Of A Fund Is This? Will I lose It All? These are questions you ask yourself or indeed ask your broker or advisor. They probably don't have an answer that assures you in any meaningful way. What happens next defines whether this investor achieves financial success or not. Full Blog at www.informeddecisions.ie Paddy Delaney QFA | RPA | APA | Qualified Coach
