These days, Michael is a Developer Advocate at AWS. He is part of the container service team, focusing on container security. Michael shares his experience around cloud-native infrastructure and apps through demos, blog posts, books, and public speaking engagements as well as contributes to open-source software. Before AWS, Michael worked at Red Hat, Mesosphere,MapR and in two research institutions in Ireland and Austria.Episode Summary“I found that industry overall is way less stressful than academic research. If it’s weekend or if I’m on PTO or whatever, I’m offline.““I’m a developer advocate. Basically, it's kind of like a guinea pig. We’re the first ones who get to play around with software and give feedback. It’s like, the UX here is great or here the UX sucks. So we are guinea pigs representing for the customer.”“I just love to be on-site with customers discussing things, trying things. The greatest part is being with actual users of the software that you’re producing and going over that in 400 level details.”—Michael HausenblasKey MilestonesWhat led Michael into academia and academic research at the start of his career? After about 4 years doing research focused work, Michael left for a startup and took a role doing pre-sales work. That’s a pretty far cry from doing research. What led to that change and what went into his decision process? What does it take to build a world-class brand? Many marketers aspire to it, but few are ever able to actually participate in building one of the top brands in the world. However, Michael Mendenhall has had the opportunity a number of times. As a senior marketer at Disney, he was able to learn from great brand builders like Michael Eisner, Bob Iger, and Steve Jobs. And as a multi-time CMO, he has had opportunities to perfect the craft of building a brand from the top. Now Michael is bringing that expertise to TriNet, where he serves as Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer/Chief Communications Officer. On this episode, Michael opens up his playbook and talks about how to build a world-class brand. He also discusses how to manage a marketing team, why communications should sit with marketing, and much more. Links: Full Notes & Quotes: http://bit.ly/2kQA527 Michael’s LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/2mlZQYJ TriNet: www.trinet.com 5 Key Takeaways: - “I've always built a team, not as if it's a marketing team as much as it’s a team that’s all about content. It's all about our narrative. It's about the focus and consistency of the narrative.” - Michael Mendenhall - CMOs should focus more on driving meaningful engagement than on pure volume metrics. - Communications is pivotal to marketing, and senior marketers should aspire to have supervision over the communications function and team. - “One thing I learned from Steve [Jobs] is simplicity of message and focus. Don't get distracted in your messaging and communications.” - Michael Mendenhall - Your brand is precious. If you aspire to be a world-class brand, don't allow yourself to put out anything that isn't world-class. Bio: Michael Mendenhall joined TriNet in March 2018 as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer/Chief Communications Officer. He leads all marketing and communications functions, including messaging, branding, advertising, demand generation, product marketing, and corporate communications. Michael is a marketing and technology veteran with extensive leadership experience. Prior to TriNet, he most recently served as IBM’s Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Communications Officer for IBM Watson and IBM Cloud, leading all marketing and communications strategies for both business areas. Prior to IBM, Michael was the Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Communications Officer at Flex. Michael also served the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Fusion-io, where he helped transform its brand positioning and product alignment prior to its acquisition by SanDisk. Before Fusion.io, Michael served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Hewlett-Packard and spent 17 years at the Walt Disney Company, where he rose to President of Marketing and Synergy for Walt Disney Studios and Executive Vice President of Global Marketing for Disney Parks and Resorts. --- Marketing Trends is brought to you by our friends at Salesforce Pardot, B2B marketing automation on the world’s #1 CRM. Dropping Your Identity of Hope Today, I was imagining what it's like to be me with no hope attached to what I do or don’t do. What an interesting moment. I realized the degree to which so much of who I’ve been being and what I’ve been doing has been related to hoping that the outcome would be in my favor. Having lived in hope for so long, I can tell you it hasn’t been a fun and easy ride. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone! I grew up in a large Catholic family, my dad was a doctor, we belonged to the Country Club, and I was considered the beautiful one in the family. I trained myself to create an identity that would be appealing and not be off-putting to anyone. I wanted to ensure my safety, security, and the belief that I was worthy of love and protection. As young children, most of us don’t know who the heck we are inside our little Earth suits. We watch what others are doing, emulate some and do the opposite of others. We train ourselves to be who it is safe to be, and we train ourselves to be what we believe will keep us safe, secure and protected. We live in hope that we are enough. Enough what? Am I worthy of my own expression? Few of us live in families that encourage the fullest expression of who we are naturally. Instead we learn to compensate for our lacks, our unworthiness, our unlovableness, our undeservingness - hoping that we can pull off some role or identity that will, like I said already, keep us safe, secure and protected. A client of mine, Michael, turned 51 not so long ago. Michael is a recovering addict. More than recovering from substance abuse, Michael is recovering himself from a life of physical violence and emotional neglect and abuse. Yuck! Michael took on an identity of a tough guy in hopes of safety, protection and security. He was a member of gangs, and hurt people badly. He also did really stupid acts, in part, he admits, to maybe kill himself, and partly to show off. Because Michael was hurting so bad inside, he hoped that by taking on this identity as a tough guy, he would be respected, appreciated, and belong. It didn’t work. Now Michael is on this side of 50! And, our work together has been a process of reclaiming the abused child, the angry teenager, and the adult looking for love in all the wrong places. Michael is letting go of these identities of hope, and it scares the pants off of him. And though it’s scary, Michael is discovering his true self. He is slowly integrating this true self into his everyday life. And, in doing so, to his surprise, he is being embraced by people who see him in his beautiful self, in his loving, playful expressions, and in his heartfelt presence. More importantly, he is appreciating who is inside all of the hoping, all the acting, all the roles he hoped would bring him love and safety, but didn’t. He is discovering compassion for himself. “How strange!” he quips!! One last thing about Michael. He realizes that 98% of his life has been spent doing things for the wrong reasons. As he lets go of his identities of hope, he is having a lot more fun just being himself. As we age, no matter our age, we have moments when we realize that all the things we’ve done, all the ways we’ve been acting and being, hasn’t kept us safe from certain realities of humanness. Fame, fortune, intelligence, athleticism, power, sex-appeal-- none of it keeps us from experiencing the inevitability of discovering that no matter what we do, we cannot escape ourselves. This quite often is the moment that a midlife crisis begins - a crisis of faith. This the bad news and the good news. The longer we are on the planet, the more time we have to discover the fullest potential of being who we are. The crisis of realizing that hoping isn’t useful at all in providing us safety, security and protection, is the beginning of a very empowering adventure. Care Giving For Dementia Episode # 46 Personal Appearance When you were a child, you really didn’t care about how your parents looked. However, as you got older, you started day care about how you looked because you started noticing the girls. When I started noticing the opposite sex, I started caring about how I looked in other words I cared how my hair looked, and how my clothes looked. As I grew up, Mama always used to tell me after getting my haircut how good it looked how good I looked. With dementia, you’re not always sure whether or not the person is actually there. However, when you clean yourself up after all winter long looking like Grizzly Adams and you get a reaction from someone who has dementia, you can pretty much. Rest assured that you have not totally lost that person. I guess what I mean by that is, the boy and I cleaned up ourselves. After all winter long. I look like Grizzly Adams and the boys needed to shaving in a haircut as well. He was not quite as bad as I was, but all in all, we both needed to clean up after all winter long. In other words, we went and got our haircuts and we boast shaved. Now, for me one of the reasons why I decided to do this week is because the wife Stephanie wanted me to clean up for Easter, and like most men, I teased her for a good little while telling her I was not going to do it for Easter. But I decided to surprise her Friday night when she come home from work with a haircut and a clean shave. The boy got he is the week before. So we both got cleaned up for his mother, because she wanted us cleaned up for Easter. Now Michael got his cut the week before I did mine and with Mama and her dementia. She noticed that something was changed with him. However, when I got mine haircut and I shaved I got jibber jabber like you wouldn’t believe. You see, when I didn’t get my haircut when Mama was Mama. She always told me how good I looked how nice it was that I had got my haircut. Even with Mama’s dementia, I got a lot of jibber jabber that told me that I have not completely lost my mother to this terrible disease of dementia. We have also been able to carry on a conversation with mom for the bout 24 hours due to the fact that we forgot to give her the medication. Now it was not a complete conversation, but it was a conversation. Nevertheless, you could figure out what she was talking about, to a point. So we this leaves me with the thought that maybe the medication is causing her to lose the ability to carry on these conversations. However, without these medications she becomes a handful so were caught between a rock and a hard place with the medications. We talk a little bit about dreams in this episode. You see, Mama seems to be waking up at times screaming. Absolutely terrified for some reason is this caused by dementia, the medication, or something else where unsure.

Simply the act of taking a deep breath when I think something or I am racing gives me enough pause to stop and really determine what the right action is. I've always learned in order to change directions you have to stop first and you know my brain doesn't know how to stop without physical queues. Taking a deep in-breath and blowing it out is a significant part of that stopping. Similar to my concept of spirituality is I breathe in the universe and I breathe out Michael. /center> Michael Wood grew up in Shinglehouse, PA a very small farm town in Potter County where all his childhood he was very interested in the unknown, especially Bigfoot. Then there was not much material on the subject but his interest did not die but was merely shelved until many years later after he served in the Navy on Submarines at Bangor Sub base in Washington. Now Michael works for Lockheed maintaining one of the largest IBM blade farms in the United States. Raised up hunting and fishing, he was impressed by the vast forests of Washington State and took up his childhood interests once again in more ways than one. In 2005, Michael was on his first elk hunt on Cougar Mt. By Wynoochee, WA. When he realized Bigfoot was very real when he found a fresh track with five toes measuring 17”long and 9 ½” wide. When he told of the experience, he was laughed at further fueling his desire to prove their existence. A few months later, again elk hunting on Mt. Octopus just south of the Hoh Rainforest, Michael had the scariest encounter to date. While doing cow calls to a bull elk, he realized he was not the only one hunting that bull when he heard a very loud scream. Not sure of what it was, he did another call and was returned with another scream must closer.
