We've collected our favorite episodes of 2022 into one playlist, to help ensure you didn't miss any of our best stories from this past year. And on today's show, we're revisiting another great episode, originally published on June 27, 2022: In June, the Avalanche beat the Lightning to win the Stanley Cup, sending the trophy back to Colorado for the first time since 2001. It was an era when the Avalanche, and their archrivals the Detroit Red Wings, were engaged in a multi-year blood feud that became the center of the hockey universe. It was a rivalry perhaps best remembered for a game played 25 years ago, on March 26, 1997 in Detroit's Joe Lewis Arena, and is now better remembered as “Fight Night at the Joe.” During the first period, Detroit's Darren McCarty sought revenge on Colorado's Claude Lemieux for a violent check in the previous year's playoffs on the Red Wings' Kris Draper. The hit caused severe injuries to Draper's face, enraging the Red Wings, who were furious that Lemieux refused to even apologize to Draper. Now, a quarter-century later, those who were part of it are opening up about what made the rivalry so intense, as part of E:60's “Unvrivaled.” In an encore of one of our favorite shows from the last year, Detroit native Dave Fleming joins us to discuss the trajectory of the rivalry and why we may never see anything like it again. Darren Douglas McCarty (born April 1, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward, best known for his years playing with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL). McCarty has been known for taking on the role of the Red Wings enforcer most of his career, a role in which he won the Stanley Cup four times in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008, the last of which after resurrecting his career in the Red Wings minor league system. McCarty spent much of his childhood in the small town of Leamington, Ontario, playing for the Southpoint Capitals (OMHA) minor teams. Drafted in the 2nd round, 49th overall, by the Red Wings in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, McCarty scored 26 points in his rookie season as the Wings won the Central Division title. In the 1996–97 NHL season, McCarty scored a career best 19 goals and 42 points as the Wings swept the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. McCarty scored the Cup-clinching goal in Game 4. This goal, scored on an inside-outside move around a Flyers' defenseman (Janne Niinimaa), and goalie (Ron Hextall), was honored as one of the best goals of the year.[1] From the 1997–98 season until his departure from the team, McCarty was part of Detroit's famous Grind Line with center Kris Draper and winger Kirk Maltby, which was often matched up against the opponent's top offensive line. One of McCarty's most infamous moments was in the famous "Fight Night at the Joe" on March 26, 1997, where a massive brawl broke out between the Colorado Avalanche and Red Wings. McCarty stunned Avalanche right winger Claude Lemieux with a blistering punch, and continued punching Lemieux while Lemieux "turtled" his body to avoid damage. The fight was revenge for a hit that Lemieux inflicted on Kris Draper in the previous years playoffs that caused significant injuries to Draper. The fight was also considered what had broken the curse over the Red Wings, as they went on to win their first Stanley cup in over 40 years. McCarty also scored the overtime winning goal to make it 6-5. In the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs, McCarty registered his first hat-trick in Game One of the Western Conference Finals against the Colorado Avalanche's Patrick Roy. McCarty scored four goals in the series, a career best. Detroit won the series and eventually a third Stanley Cup in six years. After 11 seasons with the Red Wings, McCarty and the team parted ways as the lockout cancelled the 2004–05 NHL season. McCarty's contract was bought out by the Red Wings as a result of the newly implemented salary cap. He then signed as a free agent with the Calgary Flames on August 2, 2005. He scored seven goals for the Flames during the regular season. He scored the overtime winning goal in Game 1 of the Flames first round series against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a series Calgary would eventually lose in 7 games. In the 2006–07 season, McCarty appeared in only 32 games and for the first time in his career, failed to register a point.

Less than 60 days until the start of the new season, but we aren't waiting. Another episode starts with Patrice Bergeron's next deal. Still one more year on his current, what should he expect for his next deal. The King has retired. Henrik Lundqvist has accomplished much in his career, but we discuss whether he is a hall of fame candidate. The Coyotes home, the Gila Arena, will no longer be such after this upcoming season. How did this come to pass? We break it down. Kevin Dineen has been named the third head coach of the Utica Comets, but why has he taken this job? Tarasenko still has not been moved. The latest has him on his way to Carolina. We present another option. Ads will be allowed on sweaters starting in the 22-23 season. Get our opinion on this (hint: it isn't a happy one). Eichel has been busy...tweeting...and the hockey world is alight. What does he mean by these tweets. We chew on this as well. Three young players were killed in a car crash in British Columbia this weekend. Two were 16, one was 17. This type of story puts everything in perspective. Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends and teammates of these young men. Jack Roslovic is giving back to the Columbus community with a charity golf tourney with proceeds going to his own foundation which will provide equipment for youth in the area to play hockey. Finally, Kris Draper was traded to the Red Wings from the Jets for future considerations which ended up being one dollar. Best trade ever? Pretty close. Enjoy the Show!

Episode 325: 4 time stanley cup champion joins the show
In this episode, Coach Andy and Eric breakdown the process of seeking help in hockey. With the path to success being so difficult, the two discuss where to find help and how to evaluate whether the resource is adequate. They go on to discuss how coaches can make themselves a resource in youth hockey, and how to shape your mentality as a player to find the help you need. Coach Andy also presents several key takeaways from a recent podcast with NHL great Kris Draper.
In this episode, Coach Andy sits down with 20-year NHL veteran, Kris Draper. They discuss everything from player development, scouting, parents, and coaching through the lens of Kris' storied carrier. Through his experience in minor, junior, and professional hockey, as well as his role scouting in the Red Wings organization, this interview offers great insights covering all aspects of the game. Draper was one of the greatest "finds" in NHL history. He played 1000+ games and 17 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, helping them win the Stanley Cup four times from 1997-2008 -- all after being acquired from the Winnipeg Jets for exactly $1. The Jets selected Draper, a centre from Toronto, in the third round (No. 62) of the 1989 NHL Draft after he played the 1988-89 season with Canada's national junior team. He went on to play one more season with Canada, helping it finish first at the 1990 IIHF World Junior Championship. Draper retired after the 2010-11 season with 364 points (161 goals, 203 assists) in 1,157 regular-season games, and 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) in 222 Stanley Cup Playoff games. After retiring, Draper remained with the Red Wings in a number of roles, including director of amateur scouting.
