Lemieux won four Stanley Cup championships during his career, including two with the New Jersey Devils, with whom he won the Conn Smythe Trophy during the team's victory in the 1995 Stanley Cup Final. He was one of 11 players to win a Stanley Cup championship with at least three different teams. He was also known as one of the greatest playoff performers, with his 80 career playoff goals ranking as the ninth most in NHL history.Lemieux was born in Buckingham, Quebec, but grew up in Mont-Laurier, Quebec. He was drafted in the second round of the 1983 NHL entry draft by the Montreal Canadiens and played with them from 1983–1990, winning his first Stanley Cup with the team in 1986. In 1990, he was traded to the Devils, with whom he played five seasons and won a second Stanley Cup. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 1995 and won his third Stanley Cup during the 1996 Cup Final. During the playoffs that season, Lemieux hit Kris Draper of the Detroit Red Wings from behind, breaking Draper's orbital, cheek, and jaw bones, and sparking a vicious rivalry between the Avalanche and Red Wings. In 1999, Lemieux was traded back to the Devils and won a fourth Stanley Cup with them in the 2000 Cup Final. Over the next few seasons, he played for the Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars. Lemieux left the NHL in 2003 and briefly joined EV Zug of the Swiss Nationalliga A before retiring as a player. In 2005, he was named president of the ECHL's Phoenix RoadRunners, a position he held for two years. Lemieux returned to the NHL with the San Jose Sharks for the 2008–2009 season, but retired again after that year. Following his retirement, Lemieux became a sports agent, serving in the role until his death. His son, Brendan Lemieux, is also a former NHL player, and currently plays for HC Davos of the National League in Switzerland. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:42 UTC on Friday, 29 May 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Claude Lemieux on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kevin.

We've collected our favorite episodes of 2022 into one playlist, to help ensure you didn't miss any of our best stories from this past year. And on today's show, we're revisiting another great episode, originally published on June 27, 2022: In June, the Avalanche beat the Lightning to win the Stanley Cup, sending the trophy back to Colorado for the first time since 2001. It was an era when the Avalanche, and their archrivals the Detroit Red Wings, were engaged in a multi-year blood feud that became the center of the hockey universe. It was a rivalry perhaps best remembered for a game played 25 years ago, on March 26, 1997 in Detroit's Joe Lewis Arena, and is now better remembered as “Fight Night at the Joe.” During the first period, Detroit's Darren McCarty sought revenge on Colorado's Claude Lemieux for a violent check in the previous year's playoffs on the Red Wings' Kris Draper. The hit caused severe injuries to Draper's face, enraging the Red Wings, who were furious that Lemieux refused to even apologize to Draper. Now, a quarter-century later, those who were part of it are opening up about what made the rivalry so intense, as part of E:60's “Unvrivaled.” In an encore of one of our favorite shows from the last year, Detroit native Dave Fleming joins us to discuss the trajectory of the rivalry and why we may never see anything like it again. The Detroit Red Wings have had some goalie troubles... Tune in as the Winged Wheel Podcast opens the show with a surprise gift from the Detroit Red Wings to kick off the festive season (0:00) before diving into Detroit's recent games against the Toronto Maple Leafs (7:45) and the Buffalo Sabres (16:30), including: strong offense from Mo Seider but weak defense from the Seider Chiarot pairing, Ville Husso and Alex Nedeljkovic struggles, failed power plays, Berggren, Sundqvist, Copp, Hronek, Larkin, & others producing, whether these are "good" losses, & lots more. We also discuss key storylines surrounding the team, including Tyler Bertuzzi's second broken hand/wrist from a blocked shot & how this affects his future with the team (via contract extension or a trade), how he fits into Derek Lalonde's systems, Steve Yzerman's roster moves with Soderblom maybe not being back, & more (27:00). Also, Andrew Copp has emerged as an incredibly effective player in Hockeytown as he continues to recover from surgery - we discuss Detroit's center depth (including whether Bo Horvat could be a farfetched fit) now & future with Marco Kasper (38:20). With Magnus Hellberg sent down to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint, what does this mean for Alex Nedeljkovic's future? Could he be scratched, traded, or even waived? (45:35) Finally, NHL news including Cal Petersen being waived, Letang's stroke, Robertson and Ovechkin scoring at will, & lots more (57:25). "Thank you all for coming out to Hot Stove Stories with Mickey Redmond & Ken Daniels in support of the Jamie Daniels Foundation - it was great to see them joined by Wes McCauley, Dan O'Halloran, Kris Draper, Chris Osgood for the event! It was a pleasure & honor to host." - Ryan Hana #LGRW Head over to wingedwheelpodcast.com to find all the ways to listen, how to support the show, and so much more. In this episode, Coach Andy and Eric breakdown the process of seeking help in hockey. With the path to success being so difficult, the two discuss where to find help and how to evaluate whether the resource is adequate. They go on to discuss how coaches can make themselves a resource in youth hockey, and how to shape your mentality as a player to find the help you need. Coach Andy also presents several key takeaways from a recent podcast with NHL great Kris Draper.
In this episode, Coach Andy sits down with 20-year NHL veteran, Kris Draper. They discuss everything from player development, scouting, parents, and coaching through the lens of Kris' storied carrier. Through his experience in minor, junior, and professional hockey, as well as his role scouting in the Red Wings organization, this interview offers great insights covering all aspects of the game. Draper was one of the greatest "finds" in NHL history. He played 1000+ games and 17 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, helping them win the Stanley Cup four times from 1997-2008 -- all after being acquired from the Winnipeg Jets for exactly $1. The Jets selected Draper, a centre from Toronto, in the third round (No. 62) of the 1989 NHL Draft after he played the 1988-89 season with Canada's national junior team. He went on to play one more season with Canada, helping it finish first at the 1990 IIHF World Junior Championship. Draper retired after the 2010-11 season with 364 points (161 goals, 203 assists) in 1,157 regular-season games, and 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) in 222 Stanley Cup Playoff games. After retiring, Draper remained with the Red Wings in a number of roles, including director of amateur scouting.
