Sean Baker's ANORA takes the fairy-tale premise of 1990's PRETTY WOMAN as its starting point, but ends up on a very different route to a very different sort of happy ending. It's also a best-of-the year contender for most of us, so we spend some time discussing what makes it so before bringing its romcom predecessor back in to consider how these two films about sex workers falling for their wealthy clients are in conversation when it comes to classicism and social hierarchies, conspicuous consumption, and what happens when a transactional relationship evolves into something more. And in Your Next Picture Show, we offer a pair of recommendations that illustrate the cinematic endurance of this particular premise. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about PRETTY WOMAN, ANORA, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Sean Baker's new ANORA takes its initial cues from 1990's PRETTY WOMAN, but its story of a sex worker who develops romantic feelings for a client in spite of class difference and social stigma soon peels off in a vastly different direction. So this week we're focusing on that shared starting point to determine what makes PRETTY WOMAN both a deeply weird depiction of sex work and a resoundingly successful romcom — and no, it's not just Julia Roberts, though it's hard to imagine us discussing PRETTY WOMAN as a classic film today without that star-making performance. And in Feedback, a listener question about theaters' embrace of faith-based films prompts a broader discussion of how and why multiplexes are diversifying their offerings. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about PRETTY WOMAN, ANORA, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. It's the beginning of April, which for me means that I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about interesting articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month. I had to record with Ellen prior to end of the March as I was preparing for knee surgery. Ellen kept posting and you can keep up with her work by subscribing to her monthly newsletter through her website. Ellen and I both had copies of the recent booklet produced by Celiac Canada with the preliminary results from their recent survey. There is so much information in these numbers and the analysts have only scratched the surface. You can read these initial results or download the booklet at celiac.ca. Both Ellen and I felt my recent conversation with Linda Sills regarding retirement and long-term care for her celiac mother was concerning and something we should all be concerned about for our families and ourselves. Ellen mentioned a previous a podcast I recorded with Mike Rose about choosing safe retirement living – you can listen at - https://acanadianceliacpodcast.libsyn.com/ep-168-retirement-living-gluten-free. As well Ellen wrote an article about Mike which you can read here - https://theceliacscene.com/celiac-crusader-tackles-challenges-residential-living/ Ellen told us about a new online mentoring program for kids and teens that is being started – you can find out more here - Introducing Celiac Chat - An Online Mentorship Program for Kid & Teens and hopefully I will speak with Avery for a podcast in the near future. Villous atrophy is a term that many of us know from our diagnosis, but Ellen was able to show me an article that listed other conditions that may cause villous atrophy – and here I was thinking it was unique to Celiac Disease. Other Conditions that May Cause Villous Atrophy On a social media note Ellen told us of a situation at a local restaurant in Victoria that recently decided to remove a popular gluten free item from their menu. This was of course unfortunate, but the negative comments on social media that ensued were somewhat over-the-top. Ellen and I comment on the issues. I mention that I recently attended a virtual class from Cinde, the everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca. I highly recommend these classes as we can all learn to make more gluten free options. On a recent podcast I spoke with Ellen Bayens about the importance of fibre in a gluten free diet. This topic keeps coming up whenever I speak to someone who is knowledgeable about nutrition. The fact is that most people in general, are not getting close to their recommended intake of fibre. When we talk about those on a gluten free diet, it's very evident that fibre plays a major role in overall gut health and more effort should be made to increase the fibre in our daily diet. This is where my guest comes in – Cinde, The Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet has lots of suggestions and recipes that can enhance your everyday menus to include more fibre. Cinde has set herself and the listeners three challenges to get more fibre, as well she's given us lots of recipes and suggestions to do just that. To find out more you can go to her link for recipes 33 High Fibre Gluten Free Recipes or browse her website everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca.

The conversation on this episode was, at first supposed to be a an opportunity for me to ask Cinde Little the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet about her post regarding Spanish tapas. I will be travelling to Spain very soon, and it occurred to me that tapas are something I don't know about, and for that reason will just avoid them. Surgical drains after breast surgery of any kind can present challenges for patients in terms of how to wear them under clothing, showering with surgical drains, and managing the tubing so it does not get caught on something and then pulling on the place of attachement to the patients body where the drains have a stitch to keep them in place. In the latest episode of the DiepCJourney podcast I interview the CEO and developer of the KILI Medical Drain Carrier Cinde Dolphin designed them with patients in mind after having #cancer four times herself and dealing with surgical drains in hospital. The lightweight drain carrier can be worn in the shower. Drain bulbs and the tubing can be tucked into the zippered pockets keeping them secure. Cinde shares the inspirational story of helping women near Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania developing women entrepreneurs making beautiful cloth aprons that can also be used post-surgery. This is community and how the name Kili Drains got its name.

I've been working on a bit of theme lately looking into different aspects of food security as they relate to those on a gluten free diet. On this episode I speak with Cinde Little the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet. Cinde has a tremendous website with lots of great ideas for main dishes, side dishes, salads and desserts. The photos on the website make everything look delicious. Cinde talks us through some of the strategies she uses to save on meats and vegetables. Planning seems to be the key. Planning also includes eating foods when they are in season. This sounds logical, but we often have to think ahead to do that. We also talk about how to take an inexpensive pasta meal and make it special with some simple additions. Many of us are not very adventurous when it comes to blending ingredients and tastes. Maybe that comes from trying to keep our diet simple to make sure it's gluten free. Cinde gives us lots of ideas to switch things up and make inexpensive meals more exciting. Cinde has become known for her online cooking classes that not only introduce you to a few new recipes, but take you through the process to give you more confidence cooking gluten free. On this episode I speak with Ellen Bayens of The Celiac Scene.com about things that have been of interest in the celiac and gluten free world over the past month. Ellen and I have a discussion about bloating – something that was never really a symptom for me, but as a symptom it should be talked about more. Ellen tells us of the recent product recall from Cavendish Farms, along with details of the new non-gluten status of Earth's Own oat beverage. The website to sign up for product recalls with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is - https://inspection.canada.ca/english/util/listserv/listsube.shtml. We both get wrapped up in a recent episode of Dr. Phil where he talks to a woman who is so fearful of ingesting gluten that she is changing everything to accommodate her fears. Dr. Phil gives us some valid information on how to evaluate a fear like this. Ellen found the evaluation criteria transposed well to help her in another area of her life. Ellen gives me her thoughts on a few of my recent podcast conversations including Dr. Melissa Ing, The Allergy Chef and Adam, who is Deanna's boyfriend. We also talk about how honest Aaron is on my Gluten Free Weigh In podcast after he was recently “glutened”. We round out our discussion with Selena's 15 Gluten Free Finds from Costco and my review of a recent online cooking class I participated in with Cinde, the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet. This episode is a fun and informative conversation with two of my friends about Gluten Free Pizza. Fortunately, my friends Ellen Bayens (theceliacscene.com) and Cinde Little (everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca) are experts when it comes to ordering pizza in a restaurant and making pizza in your home kitchen. Ellen gives us some great tips on the questions you need to ask to ensure your gluten free pizza is safe to eat in a restaurant. As well, she gives us some information you can use to decide if ordering a takeout pizza is safe for you. Here is the link to Ellen's list of questions to ask and the Gluten Free Pizza restaurant she spoke about – bit.ly/OrderingGlutenFree bit.ly/900DegreesPizza Cinde and I talk about some of the options available to you if you want to make a gluten free pizza at home. There are premade pizza crusts, pizza dough and dough mixes. Although each of these options may be gluten free, the best gluten free pizza crust will likely come after experimenting with different yeast-based crust recipes. Techniques are very different from wheat pizzas and can often be best learned from a baking class. Whether you're baking your pizza in a very hot oven, on a pizza stone or steel, or on an outdoor barbeque, Cinde gives us lots of tips to make your best gluten free pizza. The beginning of a new year is often an opportunity for many of us to re-evaluate what we are eating, and take some time to re-set. Some time during high school I was exposed to the concept of vertical integration. Even though I did not have any aspirations of running my own business at that time, I was able fascinated with the concept and admired the people who do this. That is still true today. My guest today, Cinde Moore, is just one of those people. She and her husband Mark started raising livestock and purchased their very first farm after they turned 50 years of age. However, they have a very farmer like philosophy which is that they will indulge their love of livestock and fascination with animals as long as every animal on the farm actually makes money for them. And, if you have been following me for any length of time, you know I like this because they are doing something that benefits them at least twice. In their search for the right livestock animal to do this with, they eventually came across Angora Goats and the unbelievable fiber that they produce. They started their herd of these goats with the intention of producing and selling yarn. Everything was going just as planned until they figured out that they did not enjoy the marketing and selling of what essentially was a commodity. They wanted more control in their pricing and freedom in the marketing. Convinced that the Angora Goats were the correct animal, it was back the drawing board of how they would market their fiber.
Cinde Dolphin is a four-time cancer survivor who has been through nine surgeries that required post-surgical wound-care drains. The attending nurses provided safety pins for managing the drains, instructing her to use the pins to attach heavy drains to her clothing. Cinde engineered a more effective protocol that resulted in the invention of the KILI Medical Drain Carrier, a simple mesh apron that safely and comfortably suspends drains during recovery. The device is now a standard issue at several prestigious hospitals around the U.S. A few highlights: 1. Cancer patients should provide feedback to their medical teams. This is a way to be more engaged in the process of building solutions to medical challenges. Is there a void where the care isn't meeting your needs? 2. Caregivers can identify the needs of the patient and shortfalls in care. 3. The KILI Medical Drain Carrier's mesh design made it possible to wear it at all times. Even when bathing!
