In a recent podcast episode, MacLane Wilkison, CEO of tLabs and co-founder of Threshold Network, shared a compelling vision for Bitcoin's future in decentralized finance (DeFi). At the center of the discussion was tBTC, a permissionless Bitcoin bridge designed to expand Bitcoin's utility across DeFi ecosystems, while maintaining security and user control.A Journey Through the Crypto SpaceWilkison's crypto journey began back in 2013 at the Hacker Dojo, where he first explored Bitcoin and connected with early builders of projects like Cosmos and Dfinity. That curiosity later led him to co-found NuCypher, a data privacy protocol for decentralized applications. Today, his experience fuels the direction of Threshold Network and tBTC, with a strong focus on unlocking new use cases for Bitcoin without compromising core principles like decentralization and transparency.Understanding tBTC: A Safer, Fully-Decentralized Bitcoin BridgeUnlike centralized solutions like Wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC), which rely on a single custodian, tBTC uses a decentralized network of signers to hold Bitcoin in custody. This distributed model minimizes counterparty risk and allows users to retain ownership of their BTC, even while it's being used in DeFi applications. One of tBTC's most promising features is that it allows users to put their Bitcoin to work—earning yield through lending, market making, and other DeFi strategies—without selling their BTC. As Wilkison explains, “We want to give Bitcoin holders more tools to participate in DeFi, while staying true to Bitcoin's core values of control and self-sovereignty.”Threshold Network has recently undergone a strategic shift—streamlining its focus solely on tBTC and ending inflation of the T token. This restructuring has created a direct link between the adoption of tBTC and the value of the T token, contributing to reported network profitability in Q1 through bridge fee revenues.Bridging Across Ecosystems, Not Betting on Just OneWilkison noted that the current DeFi ecosystem remains fragmented, with platforms like Ethereum, Solana, and new Bitcoin layer-2s all competing for developer attention. But tBTC is built to be platform-agnostic—bridging Bitcoin into whatever ecosystem users choose to participate in.Looking ahead, Threshold is keeping a close eye on developments like BitVM2, which could further strengthen the security and decentralization of Bitcoin bridges. “Our goal is to make tBTC the most secure and trust-minimized way to use Bitcoin in DeFi,” Wilkison said.As the conversation wrapped, Wilkison offered a clear message to developers: focus on building tools that matter. “Don't chase trends. Build something that lasts and solves real problems,” he said.MacLane Wilkison's insights into tBTC and the broader DeFi ecosystem underscore the potential for Bitcoin to play a pivotal role in decentralized finance. By prioritizing security, user control, and innovative yield opportunities, tBTC is poised to become a key player in bridging Bitcoin with the diverse world of DeFi.

As more and more sensitive data about us is created, the importance of data privacy becomes more apparent. With major data breaches seeming to happen regularly, data privacy is more important than ever. While some blockchain applications improve upon the traditional model, they fall short on being able to control private data in a public setting. However, there is a project that is aiming to tackle this issue of data privacy in a secure way that can help us improve industries like understanding our genes. The company is NuCypher, and I’m gonna tell you about how they are changing the landscape for data privacy in blockchain.
In this episode we talk to Greg Osuri, the CEO of Akash Network. The DeCloud for DeFi, and the world's first decentralized cloud computing marketplace built with the help of Cosmos-SDK and Tendermint. Akash Decentralized Cloud is 'a faster, better, and lower cost cloud built for DeFi, decentralized projects, and high growth companies, providing unprecedented scale, flexibility, and price performance. 10x lower in cost, its serverless computing platform is compatible with all cloud providers and all applications that run on the cloud'. We spoke to Greg about decentralized cloud, of course and what are its benefits. About open-source and its efficiency. The stages in the development of cloud technology. Interoperability, scalability, composability... and a lot of other fancy, tech terms that Greg breaks down for much easier understanding. We talked about DeFi and flash loans. We talk about the monetary cost of freedom, product management in the validation business and about decentralized projects in general. Chainflow believes in a decentralized future. They are optimistic that decentralization will decentralize power. That centralization of power causes many of the world’s biggest problems and that decentralization results in a fairer distribution of power, wealth, and opportunity. The Chainflow Staking Systems are a contribution toward manifesting a decentralized future. NuCypher is a decentralized threshold cryptography network offering interfaces and runtimes for secrets management and dynamic access control. It provides cryptographic infrastructure for privacy preserving applications and it exists as a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. They are currently in testnet but once launched you will be able to use NuCypher to carry out proxy re-encryption.Proxy re-encryption is a cryptographic method that allows you to delegate re-encryption of data to a third party and in this case validators in the NuCypher network. With this method you issue a re-encryption key that is assigned to a specific public key and a third party has the ability to re-encrypt data for that third party to decrypt. In this case the NuCypher network acts as the third party service. It is useful for when you want to share data, with the ability to revoke access at a later stage. They also have an interesting token distribution mechanism called the WorkLock. This is similar to a Lockdrop but with work required from the participants.MacLane Wilkison, Co-founder and CEO of NuCypher talks about how and why the protocl was created, the challenges faced with it, and the problems it solves.Topics covered in this episode:- MacLane’s background and how he got into the blockchain space- Challenges with working with corporate entities and getting people to understand privacy preserving technologies- The zeroDB protocol and how that led to NuCypher- What was MacLane’s goal with starting NuCypher- What proxy re-encryption is and why it’s desirable over manual systems- What are threshold signatures- Attributability on the protocol- Some use cases of using FHE on NuCypher and why they have chosen this for the protocol- MacLane’s thoughts on trusted hardware- The infrastructure of NuCypher and why it is on Ethereum- Results from the testnet- WorkLock - their token distribution mechanism and how it compares to Lockdrop- How you can set up a node on NuCypher- Current gas costs and the impact of this- The NuCypher business model and how they make money- Where to learn more about NuCypherEpisode links: - [NuCypher Website](nucypher.com)- [NuCypher Discord](https://discord.com/invite/7rmXa3S)- [NuCypher blog](https://blog.nucypher.com/)- [WorkLock](https://blog.nucypher.com/the-worklock/)- [NuCypher Twitter](https://twitter.com/NuCypher)- [MacLane's Twitter](https://twitter.com/MacLaneWilkison)Show notes and listening options: [epicenter.tv/357](https://epicenter.tv/357)

In this episode, we chat with Flavio Bergamaschi from IBM research about Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). FHE allows for computation on encrypted data. First developed in 2009 at IBM, this tech has long been the considered only theoretically possible. However, as we learn in the interview, there have been strides made in the last few years and we are starting to see FHE technology being used in some real world applications. In this interview, we discuss the origin of the technology, what it is, how it can be combined with other cryptographic techniques such as MPC and ZKPs, and applications for FHE technology being explored today. Great Caesar's Ghost! NuCypher has demo'd a practical fully-homomorphic encryption (FHE) scheme that leverages an Ethereum smart contract for a proof mechanism. We get to go over FHE: what it is, how it works, how it commits to the blockchain, scaling issues, and the future of encrypted computation. This will enable new privacy mechanisms on layer 2 solutions which interface with the blockchain cheaply and efficiently. Very big stuff for anyone trying to use blockchain as a resolution mechanism but wants to hide their business rules in the process!
