Zij brengen hun kunst als NFT's uit en zijn bang dat die als 'security' (effect) worden geklassificeerd. Dat gebeurde eerder bij de collectie Stoner Cats, van Mila Kunis en Ashton Kutcher. In een nieuwe aflevering van de Crypto Update vertelt Herbert Blankesteijn over het laatste nieuws. Zo gaat de prijs van Bitcoin afgelopen maanden vooral zijwaarts en dit biedt ruimte voor altcoins om nieuwe records neer te zetten. Zo gaat het enorm goed met Toncoin, een munt die deze week ook in de Cryptocast wordt besproken. TON stond voor Telegram Open Network maar sinds 2020 hebben ze hun naam verandert in The Open Network. Het gaat zo goed met Toncoin dat ze inmiddels een plek hebben bemachtigt in de top 10 als je kijkt naar marktkapitalisatie. Ook BNB van handelsplatvorm Binance is gestegen. Binance Coin is al heel lang de vierde crypto, na Bitcoin, Ether en Tether. Ze zijn nu Solana voorbij met een all time high van 716 dollar terwijl bijvoorbeeld Ether en Solana dit jaar nog geen absoluut record hebben laten zien. Waarom is BNB eigenlijk gestegen naar deze hoogte? Dat komt vooral omdat ze eerst een stuk waren gezakt, mede door de ongelooflijk dure schikking van 4 miljard met de Amerikaanse justitie, en gevangenisstraf voor ex-directeur Changpeng Zhao. Nu de lucht geklaard is, lijkt er weer meer vertrouwen te zijn in deze exchange. De SEC heeft een schikking getroffen met Terraform Labs, het bedrijf dat in 2022 de neergang van de cryptomarkt veroorzaakte. Zo moet de oprichter, Do Kwon, in deze schikking ruim 200 miljoen betalen. Dit terwijl hij nog vastzit in Montenegro omdat ze daar niet kunnen besluiten of hij naar de VS of naar Zuid-Korea wordt uitgeleverd. De rest van de schikking betreft 4,3 miljard, en dat is vergelijkbaar met wat Binance moest betalen voor het schenden van antiwitwasregels. Het verschil is dat Binace dat kon betalen. Terraform is failliet en zou volgens de huidige directeur nog 150 miljoen in kas hebben. Tether gaat een miljard investeren in technologiebedrijven. Our country must be the leader in the field; there is no second place.'Those words will have been written for him, but they nevertheless show that policies, should he win the election, as currently looks likely, will be favourable. That has to be good for the sector.Second the Ethereum ETF got green lit this week in the US, so today we consider the implications of that, and give our outlook on the sector more generally.First up, ether has rallied. It's risen by about a third from $2,900 a coin to within spitting distance of $4,000.I must confess to being somewhat flummoxed by Ethereum. (If you want to read my guide, it is here). Briefly: its founding principle is to use blockchain technology for purposes beyond an alternative system of digital money. Known as "the world's programmable blockchain," it can be used to “codify, decentralize, secure, and trade just about anything.” Charlie Morris of Byte Tree likens it to a decentralized App Store (you should all read his letter by the way). Developers can use the platform to build and publish smart contracts and distributed applications (dApps), and it is a kind of marketplace for financial services (DeFi), NFTs (non-fungible tokens), games, and apps, all of which can be paid for in ether.The Bitcoin maximalists don't like it. Ethereum is not properly decentralized. The numerous forks that have taken place in reaction to hacks prove this—they would not be possible with a properly decentralised platform. Too many coins were pre-mined and handed out to founders. Ethereum 2.0 met with delay after delay. Transaction costs, known as gas fees, can get exorbitant. Its blockchain is not that robust. In short, it's something of a ticking time bomb.Well, maybe. But its founder, Vitalik Buterin, a billionaire many times over by the time he was 28 (just in case you weren't feeling inadequate enough already this morning), will know all this. He is a genius, and I satisfy myself that by owning Ethereum, I am effectively long Buterin—not unlike being long Elon Musk by owning Tesla.Ethereum also has numerous competitors—not least Solana, but also Binance Smart Chain, Polkadot, Cardano, Terra, and Fantom - which may or may not be a good thing. Many of these are technologically superior, say critics—faster, more robust.Price-wise ethereum been something of a laggard. Its all-time high was $4,800 and it's about a thousand bucks, or 20%, below that. That said, it does tend to move later in bull markets - and by more.But despite all of this, Ethereum remains by some margin the number two cryptocurrency by market cap—at $465 billion—followed by Tether, which has another purpose altogether ($110 bn), then Binance Coin ($89 bn). By way of comparison, HSBC has a market cap of $165 bn. And you thought crypto was a passing fad.So what can we expect with the launch of this new ETF?

In ongeveer een maand tijd trokken deze beleggingsproducten zo'n vier miljard aan nieuw kapitaal aan. We kunnen zonder twijfel concluderen dat die lancering een succes is geweest. Ondertussen zit er ook steeds meer beweging in dezelfde beleggingsproducten, maar dan voor Ethereum. Onder meer BlackRock, VanEck en Grayscale zijn hier in de race. De SEC lijkt dezelfde strategie te hanteren als bij de Bitcoin ETF's: uitstellen, uitstellen en nog eens uitstellen. Tot het niet meer kan. 23 mei is een mogelijke eerste interessante deadline, waar de toezichthouder een hoop fondsen in één keer kan goedkeuren. In totaal lopen er nu acht aanvragen.  En de rechtszaak tegen Craig Wright gaat onverminderd door. De Australiër doet zich al jaren voor als Satoshi Nakamoto, maar moet dat nu ook bewijzen. Dat lukt hem nog niet geweldig. Hij verspreekt zich veel en maakt een onhandige indruk. De komende tijd gaat de rechtszaak verder en zal Wright met meer bewijs moeten komen. De Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance, een idee van onder meer Jack Dorsey, wil als aanklager voor eens en voor altijd een einde maken aan de praktijken van Wright. In het verleden waren onder meer Bitcoin-ontwikkelaars het doelwit van rechtszaken uit naam van Wright.  Deze week in de Cryptocast Solana. In korte tijd uitgegroeid tot de grootste concurrent van ethereum als het gaat om smart contracts, nft's, decentralized finance en dat soort dingen.
