Brent Xu is the Founder and CEO of Umee, a Cross Chain DeFi hub designed to operate seamlessly across protocols. Brent has extensive experience in blockchain and venture investments and previously held business strategy roles at ConsenSys and Tendermint and Cosmos. Why you should listen After cutting his teeth working with Tendermint to build Gravity Dex and the Gravity Bridge on the Cosmos network, Brent Xu founded Umee in April 2021 to bring cross-chain DeFi use cases to the Cosmos and Ethereum ecosystems. Umee aspires to create a DeFi experience across blockchain networks and resolve three major issues universal to all DeFi projects: detached yields, concentrated systemic risks, and isolated capital. Umee was designed to use the IBC protocol, an “internet of blockchains,” created from the Cosmos ecosystem. Initially implementing a cross-chain borrowing and lending framework, Umee's vision evolved to include DeFi and open finance more broadly. To accomplish this, Umee would need to break the existing silos between blockchains with novel bridging solutions — a difficult and critical obstacle to the broad adoption of DeFi. The native UMEE token is a Proof of=Stake asset that can exist as a Cosmos SDK token and as an ERC20 token on Ethereum. Ab initio, Umee would be built to be interoperable with blockchains such as Terra, Crypto.com, Binance Chain, Osmosis, Secret Network, and many, MANY others. In plain language, users could lend, borrow, stake, delegate, and more, across dozens of chains. Umee secured its seed round funding led by Polychain, with investors including Coinbase Ventures, Alameda, Ideo CoLab, ConsenSys Ethereal, and others. For tax and business reporting, Lukka offers tailored business data reporting powered by Lukka's robust processing and reporting engine. Lukka can also create custom solutions, with leading crypto data experts to help provide a custom-tailored solution for your business needs. The Problem When Trident Trust, a global leader in the fund administration space, first entered crypto in 2017, they had to acquire clients' crypto transactional data via methods that were cumbersome and unsustainable (i.e., manual input, files, screenshots, etc.). Trident used spreadsheets to apply price and derive the trading activity value. Trident to manually transform the data into a format that was easy to understand by traditional fund accounting systems. The Solution In 2018 Trident became Lukka's first fund administration customer. Lukka provided Trident with support for fund data collection, account balance calculations, and valuation for crypto-fiat spot trades. The Lukka Enterprise Software assisted Trident with data transformation and delivered standardized reports in a format that is directly loaded into Trident's accounting system. Lukka now helps Trident support crypto spot transactions, derivative transactions such as options/futures/swaps, lending, and staking activity, as well as transactions occurring on many Ethereum-based DeFi protocols. The Results Automated transaction data input and account balance reconciliation for over 50 crypto hedge funds. The delivery of pricing and valuation data for more than 700 crypto assets used to support monthly NAV calculations. Automated reporting processes for each fund client that is formatted for direct upload into Trident's primary accounting system without any manual intervention or data. Today we are re-sharing our Hash Power documentary. This series was originally released in September 2017 when 1 Bitcoin hovered around $4000 US Dollars. While so much has changed in the years since - these episodes are a great introduction to the technology, the power of decentralization, Bitcoin, Ethereum, ICO's, cryptography, and hashing. You will hear from a variety of industry experts throughout these episodes - please enjoy.   For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here.    ----   Original Intro (10.03.17)   In episode 1 of Hash Power, we explored blockchains as a technology—how they work, why tokens (also known as cryptocurrencies) are an integral part of any blockchain, and how these new networks might change the world. In episode two, we spend time with the leading investors in the field. Like any frenzied asset class, there are countless cryptocurrency hedge funds popping up everywhere. But founders from three of the original firms—Polychain, Metastable, and Blocktower Capital—are our primary guides this week.   As I speak, the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies is $136B. There are hundreds of tokens currently available, but bitcoin and Ethereum represent 75% of the total market cap. $136B sounds like a big number, but its tiny relative to any other asset class—and I use that term with hesitation. To put it in perspective, that's exactly the same size as the market cap of IBM. But IBM had more than $10B of earnings in 2016. Tokens have none. As you will hear, valuing tokens is a very hard exercise.   In such a nascent world, we are seeing investing strategies take hold. Olaf Carlson-Wee, Josh Seims, and Ari Paul walk us through different takes on cryptocurrency investing, be it early stage, long term buy and hold, or more hedge fund style strategies.   -----   Web3 Breakdowns is a property of Colossus, LLC. Before Tarun Chitra built out his company, he spent years doing quantitative research and development for places like D.E. Shaw Research and Vatic Labs. Chitra took his experience in machine learning to create and head a simulation platform for crypto networks — Gauntlet — which garnered backing from companies like Coinbase, Distributed Global and Polychain, among others. Gauntlet provides tools for crypto developers to forecast security risks, possible governance snags and consensus mechanism issues. By forecasting such problems and showing how they could affect assets or network activity, developers can make more informed decisions about security and governance structures. In this week's episode of The Scoop, Chitra spoke from his experience in the high-frequency trading (HFT) world. Chitra's appearance coincided with growing concerns surrounding the market activity driven by Robinhood traders, as users of the app continue to buy up stocks that other investors have dumped. Much of the conversation also coincides with the conversation surrounding brokerage and payment for order flow (PFOF), as some critics object to selling order flow to market makers, claiming it creates a conflict of interest. The Block recently uncovered how Robinhood received more than $90 million in PFOF payments during Q1. Chitra discussed the HFT world's view on PFOF and broke down some of the nuance in the transactions on this week's episode. Chitra also touched on: Why private exchange trade funds aren't that private Whether open finance has structural advantages in comparison to legacy market structure  If those possible advantages are enough to drive volumes in the same league as traditional markets The role of transparency in both the Open Finance and traditional finance ecosystems. This Week in Crypto - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrency News

Hello everyone and welcome to This Week in Crypto. This is your daily roundup for Tuesday, October 1, 2019. A vulnerability has been found in the ENS short-name auction, Binance and Polychain invest In Founders Bank, and Nebulous reaches a $225K SEC settlement. ☕Buy me a coffee: https://glow.fm/mota ENS Short-Name Auction Vulnerability A vulnerability in the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) short-domain auction has allowed a hacker to obtain 16 notable domain names including apple.eth, defi.eth, wallet.eth, and pay.eth. Auction operator OpenSea has taken full responsibility for the bug. According to the disclosure, the bug distributed ENS domains to participants who did not hold the highest bid. OpenSea stated “One user discovered an input validation vulnerability that allowed them to place bids on a name that actually issued a different name.” Given that the domains are distributed on the Ethereum blockchain, it is impossible for ENS to revoke the names. OpenSea has asked for the domain names to be returned for re-auction and said it will reward 25 percent of the final auction price plus the original bid the hacker. OpenSea also paused ENS auctions and disabled bidding until they feel confident that the bugs are fully resolved. OpenSea has since announced that the stolen ENS names were all returned successfully and bidding will be extended.  SKALE Network Raises $17m Ethereum scaling platform SKALE Network has raised $17.1 million to launch on mainnet. The funding will be used to seed and stabilize SKALE’s proof-of-stake network and increase its security. SKALE claims it will enable dapps to conduct millions of transactions per second at a fraction of the cost of what’s possible today, via their layer-2 scaling solution. Nebulous Reaches $225K SEC Settlement Nebulous, the company behind the Sia network, has reached a $225K settlement with the SEC) over an unregistered securities offering and conversion. Nebulous only raised approximately $120,000 during its 2014 token sale. As part of the Nebulous settlement, the company will not be required to register the Siacoin utility token as a security. Siacoins are used in the Sia ecosystem to buy and sell cloud storage space and pay revenues to Siafund investors. Nebulous COO Zach Herbert stated “Though the penalty for our unregistered 2014 Siafunds offering is steep, we are excited that the SEC chose to take no action against Siacoins, and we believe this settlement validates our two-token model.” The Sia settlement comes just a day after the announcement of Block. One’s $24 million settlement with the SEC for the $4.1 billion EOS securities sale. Binance & Polychain Invest In Founders Bank Malta-based Founders Bank has raised $10 million to launch crypto-friendly financial services. Among the investors are Binance and Polychain. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao said that Binance will be one of the Founders Bank’s first clients. Polychain president Joe Eagan said the investment was inspired by personal experience since his fund struggled to find banking partners in 2016. He stated “Many of our portfolio projects, we’ve seen, still have difficulty accessing banking partners.” Currently, Silvergate Bank in California, Metropolitan Bank in New York, and WEG Bank in Germany offer services for crypto startups. Founders Bank is scheduled to open next in 2020. FINMA “Open Minded” About Libra According to Reuters, Mark Branson, CEO of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), showed openness towards the libra project stating “We are not here to make such projects impossible. We will respond to them with an open mind, with an attitude that same risks require same rules” This comes contrary to concerns from EU finance leaders including Bruno Le Maire’s concern over the potential threat that Libra poses towards national currencies.

Kevin Wang is a co-founder of Nervos, a public blockchain designed by a former Ethereum core developer and backed by Sequoia, Polychain, and others. As one of China's top projects, Nervos recently partnered with crypto exchange Huobi to build a new public chain for banks and financial institutions. Kevin was responsible for Nervos' unique token economics design where users will eventually pay "rent" to store assets and smart contracts on the network. He believes this type of model is critical if blockchains are to scale. Same goes for the layered design, which splits the public consensus layer from the transactional layer to increase a blockchain's performance while balancing security and trust. In episode 1 of Hash Power, we explored blockchains as a technology—how they work, why tokens (also known as cryptocurrencies) are an integral part of any blockchain, and how these new networks might change the world. In episode two, we spend time with the leading investors in the field. Like any frenzied asset class, there are countless cryptocurrency hedge funds popping up everywhere. But founders from three of the original firms—Polychain, Metastable, and Blocktower Capital—are our primary guides this week. As I speak, the total market cap of cryptocurrencies is $136B. There are hundreds of tokens currently available, but bitcoin and Ethereum represent 75% of the total market cap. $136B sounds like a big number, but its tiny relative to any other asset class—and I use that term with hesitation. To put it in perspective, that’s exactly the same size as the market cap of IBM. But IBM had more than $10B of earnings in 2016. Tokens have none. As you will hear, valuing tokens is a very hard exercise. In such a nascent world, we are seeing investing strategies take hold. Olaf Carlson-Wee, Josh Seims, and Ari Paul walk us through different takes on cryptocurrency investing, be it early stage, long term buy and hold, or more hedge fund style strategies. a16z Podcast: Cryptocurrencies, App Coins, and Investing in Protocols

Most of us have probably heard of bitcoin and ethereum -- but did you know there were 15 new cryptocurrencies launched this past month alone? How then do we know which protocols to invest in -- not just as a developer or user, but as an investor? Because, let's face it, open source software and services need resources not just to survive but thrive. General partner Chris Dixon talks about this dynamic between open vs closed in this episode of the a16z Podcast in conversation with Sonal Chokshi and with Olaf Carlson-Wee, founder of (a16z investment) Polychain, a new kind of hedge fund that invests directly in cryptocurrencies at the protocol layer. But what does that actually mean? Instead of investing in the companies that are building on top of these protocols, Polychain invests in the protocols themselves -- in much the same way that you could have invested in domain names instead of early internet companies like Amazon in the early days (which most people actually didn't have access to do). Imagine if you could have bought equity in Linux! As people create application-specific tokens for these protocols (also known as “app coins”) to crowdfund and share equity in these networks, it's actually "bringing capitalism into open source" -- and could even one day lead to less centralized platforms and a web owned by users. It's also creating a whole new asset class... but whatever you do, do NOT try this at home! The views expressed here are those of the individual AH Capital Management, L.L.C.
