The Fintech Blueprint
Inside the Platform Powering +$171B in Private Capital, with AngelList CEO Avlok Kohli

The Fintech Blueprint

Lex chats with Avlok Kohli - the CEO of AngelList, about the company's significant evolution. Initially a platform for startups to connect with venture capitalists, AngelList has transformed into a comprehensive fintech entity encompassing private equity and cryptocurrency. Avlok discusses the strategic pivots, including the introduction of syndicates and rolling funds, that have redefined the company's business model. The episode also explores the broader implications of crowdfunding and the unique challenges in the crypto space, offering a deep dive into AngelList's impact on the financial services industry. Notable discussion points: 1. AngelList's Second Founding: Reinvention as a Fintech Platform: Since 2019, AngelList has transformed from a mixed-use startup platform into a focused fintech infrastructure business for fund managers. Avlok Kohli spun out the syndicates arm and built a scalable product offering that includes SPVs, venture funds, and innovative structures like Rolling Funds and Roll Up Vehicles. This pivot catalyzed explosive growth—from ~$1B in AUM in 2019 to $171B+ today—by enabling fund creation and deployment at scale. 2. Product Innovation as a Strategic Advantage: Instead of competing with well-capitalized incumbents like Carta on sales and marketing, AngelList focused on building category-defining products. The launch of Rolling Funds—allowing fund managers to raise publicly and continuously—was a breakout moment. It created viral word-of-mouth growth and redefined how emerging fund managers could access capital, illustrating the principle: “You can't win by playing someone else's game.” 3. AI and the Future of Private Markets Infrastructure: AngelList is embedding AI across three strategic layers: (1) Back-office automation, replacing manual workflows, (2) Customer service enhancement, enabling agents to respond to LPs with real-time data, and (3) Data reasoning products, like Fin, which analyzes anonymized fund and secondary data to deliver actionable private market insightsThis positions AngelList not only as an admin platform but as a data intelligence layer over the private capital markets. MENTIONED IN THE CONVERSATION Topics: Fintech, Web3, Venture, VC, Venture capital, private markets, fundraising, crowdfunding, crypto, web3, AI, Angellist, Coinlist, Carta, Gumroad ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

Podcast Show Notes: Solana Weekly with Aly from Blockchain Founders FundHost: Thomas BahamasGuest: Aly Madhavji, Managing Partner at Blockchain Founders FundDate: March 19, 2025Overview: In this episode of Solana Weekly, Thomas sits down with Aly Madhavji, a seasoned investor and managing partner at Blockchain Founders Fund, to explore the investment landscape of crypto, with a deep dive into Solana's ecosystem. Aly shares insights from his eight years of experience, discussing market cycles, investment strategies, and emerging trends in Web3, including tooling, real-world assets (RWAs), fintech, and the intersection of AI and blockchain.Key Discussion Points:* The Crypto Market Rollercoaster* Aly reflects on the volatility of crypto markets, referencing recent events like Trump's announcements causing 25% surges followed by sharp declines.* “There are no days off in crypto,” Aly notes, highlighting the fast-paced nature of the industry.* Investment Philosophy: Founders First, Themes Second* Aly emphasizes investing in exceptional founders who bring world-class practices to crypto, even if their focus isn't his top thematic priority.* Key investment themes:* Infrastructure: Early bets like Solana at 18 cents showcase the potential of Layer 1s, though Aly sees diminishing returns for new L1s. Innovations like Bearchain's proof of liquidity still intrigue him.* Tooling: A critical gap in Web3, with inefficiencies plaguing developers. Companies like Uniblock (API aggregation) and Validation Cloud (node infrastructure) are solving real problems.* Real-World Assets (RWAs): From advising Polymath eight years ago to seeing BlackRock's Larry Fink push tokenization, Aly sees RWAs gaining traction, with startups like Zoth (on-chain yields) and Asterism (RWA infra) leading the charge.* Fintech & Payments: This cycle features profitable companies, a shift from past bull runs. Stablecoin payments and remittances are ripe for growth, with examples like Mastercard settling a third of transactions on a private blockchain.* The State of Solana* Aly praises Solana's rise, noting its speed and user base make it a focal point for builders. Every company now considers a “Solana strategy.”* The recent U.S. strategic reserve announcement including Solana underscores its growing prominence.* Challenges in Crypto Investing* Value Extraction vs. Value Creation: Aly critiques short-term “cash grab” token launches and meme coin hype, advocating for sustainable businesses that grow the pie for everyone.* The Death Spiral: Poorly executed token launches can tank even great companies, a phenomenon Aly calls the “death spiral.”* Retail Fairness: Aly pushes for retail investors to access deals at VC prices, citing platforms like Echo and CoinList as steps toward democratization.* VC Process Unveiled* Blockchain Founders Fund reviews 300–500 companies monthly, sourced from events, online submissions, and a network of 410 funds.* Quick filtering (deck reviews in minutes) narrows the pool, followed by calls and a rating system assessing traction, team, and value-for-money.* Aly's tip for founders: Nail your pitch in 11 seconds, 30 seconds, and 90 seconds—anything longer risks losing interest.* Emerging Trends & Innovations* AI & Blockchain: Hype around AI agents is overstated, but legitimate projects like Virtuals show promise.* Decentralized Systems: Aly highlights Unit Network, which tokenizes business ownership with transparent treasuries, and DEAN, a decentralized insurance network—both vital for a hyper-decentralized future.* Meme Coins with Substance: Could real businesses disguise themselves as meme coins for fun and fundamentals? Aly sees potential in this hybrid model.* Long-Term Vision* Aly's 10-year fund horizon reflects a belief in building enduring companies, not quick flips. He contrasts this with short-term token funds and founders vesting in a year.* “Great things take time,” Aly says, urging focus on consistent progress over flashy launches.* U.S. Crypto Renaissance* Dropped lawsuits and lighter regulations are revitalizing the U.S. crypto scene, keeping talent stateside and reversing the exodus seen in places like Canada (Ethereum's origin).Guest Contact:* Twitter/X: @Aly_Madhavji* Website: Blockchain Founders Fund* Aly welcomes startup pitches—submit via the website or reach out directly!Closing Thoughts:Thomas wraps up with gratitude to Aly for shedding light on crypto investing and a call to listeners to subscribe, review, and shill their bags. “This isn't financial advice, but let's accelerate and get this bag!” Get full access to The Dramas of Thomas Bahamas at thomasbahamas.substack.com/subscribe

Today on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast we have a guest who has seen virtually every evolution of the internet and financial services since the 1990s.Graham Jenkin is the co-founder and CEO of CoinList, the leading token issuance platform in the crypto space that has helped a large number of the top crypto projects by market cap get their earliest funding and customers with an initial token sale on CoinList.CoinList has played a critical role in the crypto ecosystem for early-stage token projects from doing token issuances for Flow to Solana to Mina and more.Given the quality of projects that they work with from the earliest of days, it's no surprise that they have attracted millions of users to CoinList. They have over 5M users on the platform. Graham's background and blend of consumer, engineering, design, and finance lends itself incredibly well to building CoinList.Prior to helping spin out CoinList from AngelList and co-founding the business, Graham was the COO and UX engineer/designer at AngelList over a 6.5 year period. Prior to AL, he led the redesign of the user interface of the world's most profitable online business - Google AdWords, where he also won the inaugural Google Great Manager Award. He also understands financial services innately well - he led BofA.com to two Webby awards. Graham is a fantastic operator with a clear vision for how to build special consumer businesses and a critical piece of crypto market infrastructure.Graham and I had a fascinating discussion on the evolution of crypto market infrastructure, how CoinList provides a critical service to both projects and investors, and the importance of Web2.5 in a world that is transitioning to Web3 by discussing how CoinList is building a centralized bridge to a decentralized world. Thanks Graham for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. It was a pleasure to have you on the show.

In this episode of the DeFi Download, Piers Ridyard interviews Barney Mannerings, co-founder of the Vega protocol. Vega is a protocol for creating and trading margin finance products on a fully decentralised network. Originally listed on CoinList last year, the Vega Protocol has raised over $45 million and currently has over 21,000 token holders. Barney worked in traditional finance before getting involved in cryptocurrency by mining Bitcoin and investing in the Ethereum presale. He quickly realised that Ethereum does not support derivatives or other types of trading seen in traditional finance. After co-founding Vega with Ramsey Khoury, the team spent a few weeks prototyping together, with Tendermint serving as the back end. They began to realise that it was possible to develop a trading system that could be used on a blockchain.[00:51] What exactly is the Vega Protocol, and what does it hope to achieve? [04:46] Barney's wish list and what was on it[06:01] What exactly is parity, and what does it mean that the current suite of products lacks it?[08:01] The significance of capital efficiency[10:41] What does a decentralised finance application's capital adequacy look like, and what is its capacity?[14:17] What does the term "atomic closeout" mean? [20:13] Barney explains how they came to the decision to build their own blockchain, and what design decisions they made to address the speed problem, the front running problem, and the product parity and capital efficiency problems.[25:48] What is the difference between deploying a DEX on Vega and deploying one on Ethereum?[26:59] What is Wasm or WebAssembly, which has grown in popularity for layer-1 protocols?[28:59] What is the profile of the people Barney hopes will be building on Vega?[31:19] The challenges that new blockchains and layer-1s face, as well as the blurring of the terms “protocol” and “application”[35:20] Vega Protocol's trustless bridge into the Ethereum ecosystem[36:16] The security profile of the Vega network and its underlying consensus, Tendermint, which employs an optimised practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (pBFT) algorithm[37:05] The number of validators used by Vega and how they plan to increase it[39:42] Wendy, a group of low overhead protocols that can implement different concepts of fairnessFurther resourcesWebsite: vega.xyz Twitter: @vegaprotocolDiscord: vega.xyz/discord

Today we're talking with Regan Bozman, co-founder of Lattice Capital, an early stage crypto venture fund. Regan says they invest in tokens, equity, NFTs, DeFi, and the like. Four and a half years ago, Regan was working at AngelList when he and some others spun out CoinList. Regan was the first employee to jump over, and he spent three and a half years doing coin sales. Now they're just getting Lattice off the ground and are excited to invest in and work with early stage teams. Regan says right now this space is all about adoption. When he first joined CoinList their focus was on everything no one else wanted to do, from writing token sales to handling customer support. At the time no one was doing sales, so when Regan joined there was a backlog of a thousand companies that were inquiring. Regan says it was a trial by fire entry. As they built up the company, they hired someone else to do sales. Regan then started spending more time with customers, finding out what they wanted to achieve with their launches. When Regan started in crypto, he knew nothing about it. He says he had an insane inbox with ideas like launching a hotel in space. Everyone thought there was a quick buck to be made. Regan says it was low barriers to entry that brought him back around in 2019. He remembers that at the time there were two young guys in India that launched a hack-a-thon and within 30 days had $20-30 million running through smart contracts. Regan says that was eye-opening for him because there was no way in the traditional finance system that anyone without a lot of money and at least two years time could build an application like that. Regan realized that they could create a much more competitive market. In the short term, Regan says the market is skewed. Ultimately, crypto has a history of booms and busts. The last 12-18 months of defy hype has made it not that hard to raise money, launch a token, and make some cash. Regan says they're long term, they don't flip tokens. He says what they're really excited about is fascinating applications of smart contracts. He says they've made one investment in Latin America, which is like leveraging stable coin rails for remittance, that's doing very well. -- The Fortune Teller podcast is a discussion between industry leaders in blockchain and financial technologies. The podcast focuses on the development of blockchain-based financial services and outlines the current state of the industry and future predictions for the adoption of decentralized finance.
