On May 5 2007 Lipine Sila murdered Hannah Rossiter and Jane Young and caused grievous bodily harm to eight other teens when he drove his car through a crowd outside a party in the Christchurch suburb of Edgeware.  The collision took place after Sila and his brother had been involved in fights at the gathering. Sila claimed he was scared for his life and was trying to get away from people attacking him - and that he never meant to harm any of the victims. However a jury found him guilty of murder and in 2008 he was jailed for life with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years.  The murders were like nothing seen in New Zealand before. They impacted many in Christchurch - from the family and friends of the dead girls to their schoolmates and community, the wider city and the country.  There was anger towards Sila, toward those who organised the party - which had been widely shared and discussed on social media in the week leading up to it - and police for their response when it was clear it was about to go haywire. In this episode of A Moment In Crime senior journalist Anna Leask revisit the Edgeware Road murders - taking you inside the tragic party, the police handling of it and the trial and sentencing of one of the country's most notorious double murderers. There is a group called "Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington".  That proves, apart from anything, there is clearly a group set up for everything and a weird name is no barrier to existence. They have concerns over the councils charging for facilities. Their complaint appears to be, the more expensive you make sport, the less sport people will do, which appears to make perfect sense. The deal in Wellington is the council charges 15 percent of the cost of providing sports fields and the ratepayer picks up the rest. On the surface seems perfectly fair, if not a little in favour of the sports. Not that Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington sees it that way.We also know from Sport New Zealand that weekly sport participation is down 7 percent. So, if you tie those two things together, you can see the issue. But, my suspicion is we are missing a couple of key ingredients. And in looking to get the council to foot more of the bill and therefore make sport cheaper, we have fallen into that age old hole of looking for someone else to fix our problem. From my experience, and given I have five kids believe me I have a lot of it, cost isn't necessarily the barrier to organised sport, life is.When I played football for the Rangers in Christchurch, rugby for Shirley, league for Linwood, or tennis for Edgeware, I walked. I walked to practice, mainly walked to games, and the away games we used a parental car pool. But they were simpler times. They were times when we lived closer to the things we used. We don't do that anymore, not in the cities anyway. School finished at 3, you played a bit of sport, and you went home. These days the kilometres required to participate in sport are inhibitive. The distance to clubs and fields is vast. Pressure from other aspects of our lives, rightly or wrongly, has overtaken us.The ability to move in cities efficiently has gone and we have made the gathering of groups to kick a ball too hard, hence we don't bother.I doubt sport, per se, is down, just organised sport. Being able to go to the local tennis court, squash club or park is still real. But the time and energy for parents is often a bridge too far. School demands more, especially at the higher NCEA levels. At a certain age you realise you aren't going to the Olympics so you move on.There is a lot at play here; I've seen it over the past 15 years at our house.Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington might just be looking at the wrong person to blame.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Licoricia Jewish statue unveiled; Hong Kong Christians and Forgiveness

A new statue has been created honouring a medieval Jewish businesswoman thought to have been a victim of 13th century hate crime. Licoricia of Winchester was a money lender whose wealth contributed to the building of Westminster Abbey and helped bankroll three English kings. She was murdered at a time of widespread anti-Semitism and campaigners hope a new statue in her hometown will serve as a powerful reminder of the history of prejudices that still exist today. Hundreds of churches in the UK are preparing to welcome Christians who are moving to this country from Hong Kong. The Home Office expects as many as 300,000 to make the journey in the next year. They're making the difficult decision to leave Hong Kong after the introduction of a controversial new National Security Law, which critics say is eroding freedoms. Danny Vincent reports from Hong Kong. Michael Gove has called for "Christian forgiveness" to be shown to anyone who shows contrition for attending Downing Street parties during lockdown. Forgiveness is central to the Christian faith, but what does it mean to forgive someone and how is our individual forgiveness affected by the nature, or indeed sincerity, of the apology? Does forgiveness require repentance? Edward Stourton explores the theology and mechanics of forgiveness with Rev George Pitcher, visiting fellow at LSE and Anglican vicar and Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers from Edgeware and Hendon Reform Synagogue Photo Copyright - Ian Rank Broadley, Producers: Carmel Lonergan Jonathan Hallewell Editor: Tim Pemberton

Governance within any community has been a work in progress for humanity's history. The blockchain ecosystem continues to develop and offer an alternative to today's centralized powers. With this, distributed projects and technologies will need to enact clear governance to ensure viable competition with the streamlined decision-making processes present in today's institutions. The absence of codified governance in Bitcoin may be one of its most significant traits, signaling to the world its predictability due to its inability to change drastically. New projects like Edgeware, however, hope to encode the rules of governance on-chain and ensure a transparent process for stakeholders wishing to participate. Edgeware is a smart contract platform built on Polkadot's Substrate. Focused on developing community-owned governance tools, Edgeware is a distributed project where participants use the tools themselves to vote, delegate, and fund each other to upgrade the network. Host Tom Shaughnessy of Delphi Digital (DelphiDigital.io) is joined by Dillon Chen of Commonwealth Labs to discuss Edgeware. As a reminder Polkadot is an interoperability platform which is set to launch in a few months, and Edgeware’s goal to bring smart contracts to Polkadot itself.  This would bring smart contract functionality to polkadot, and allow it to compete with Ethereum, Tezos, EOS and other smart contract platforms.  Edgeware is currently running an innovative alternative to a raise, known as a lockdrop. Instead of raising money from investors, Edgeware is allowing holders of Ether to lock their ETH up and receive Edgeware tokens in the future or to signal their intent to back the project, without locking to earn edgeware tokens. This is a really innovative approach to not only garner a large potential stakeholder base which is critical for a project's success, but also to increase the value of Edgeware’s future treasury without raising money from investors. Currently there is 881k ETH locked and 1.2M ETH signaled, or $273M and $372M in value respectively.  Edgeware is a high profile project, and this is hopefully the most in-depth discussion to date on Edgeware with a ton of great color on Polkadot as well.    To access the insights package of Delphi's leading crypto research, visit DelphiDigital.io on your device and sign up using coupon code CHAINREACTION   Follow Tom on Twitter @Shaughnessy119 Follow Dillon on Twitter @dillchen   Disclosures: This podcast is strictly informational and educational and is not investment advice or a solicitation to buy or sell any tokens or securities or to make any financial decisions. What is Edgeware Edgeware being developed by an entity called Commonwealth Labs Built on Parity’s Substrate Grandpa finality tool On-chain governance Scripting built in. Using Web Assembly (Wasm) Building on Substrate People used to build their own web servers, now they use the cloud. People used to build new chains, now they can use Substrate. This enables builders to focus on the area of their expertise. One month after development began a test net was operational Three months the project was live. EOS was too centralised Ethereum was not flexible enough WebAssembly Being able to use Rust or C++ is great Still being experimented with The Polkadot and Substrate ecosystem Friendly and helpful community 20 projects underway 100 planned for the end of the year Platform still stabilizing People are building now planning to switch to the security of the Polkadot chain. Securing the edgeware chain Delegated PoS aiming to move to Nominated PoS as Sybil resistance mechanism Grandpa for finality Round Robin leader selection The ultimate goal is to rely on the security of Polkadot The problem of governance It’s a problem that has been pursued by humanity for all time Blockchains increase social scalability Improves legibility Enables new organisations These new organisations need new governance systems Blockchains are new so there is naturally experimentation and opportunity. Want to further this human endeavour in the blockchain world How does edgeware actually do governance? Allocate tokens using a “Lock Drop” of ether. One token one vote. Vote can be allocated Focusing on core changes to the network/protocol, allocation of on-chain treasury that is bootstrapped by the block reward. The Lock Drop Initial token distribution is the linchpin of effective network governance Require the belief in the economic value of the token Previous ways of doing this were an ICO or airdropping a token The Livepeer Merkle Mine was an interesting experiment Edgeware hopes to get the same effect of distributing tokens to people who want to actively participate without the bloat of a Merkle Mine. Ether tokens are locked in a contract that prevents the tokens from moving for a period of 3, 6, or 12 months. The registry of locked tokens is used to initiate the Edgeware chain with additional tokens allocated to individuals who locked their tokens up for longer periods. Infrastructure on top of infrastructure Are we locked in an infrastructure phase?

It is a hundred years since the start of the first world war, and this Christmas marks the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Truce - the soldiers' truce - in that war. Our special Christmas podcast is introduced by Stephen Sedley, former Appeal Court Judge and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Law at Oxford University, who, nearly 50 years ago, recorded the interview with Frank Austin, which is at the heart of this podcast.  Frank was a 21 year old soldier when he took part in the 1914 Christmas Truce. Stephen Sedley:  Frank Austin was a Fleet Street compositor in the days when newspapers were set in hot metal.  He was born in 1893 and was still an apprentice when he signed up in 1914 without a second thought, after all, everyone knew the war would be over by Christmas.... In 1966, in his sitting room in Edgeware, Middlesex, I recorded some of Frank's memories of a conflict that, by pure good fortune, he survived - one of fewer than 30 known     survivors of an entire regiment. But on the first Christmas day of the war, Frank had both witnessed and taken part in one of the most  significant and dramatic events in the history of warfare.  As he reflects in this recording, in that brief moment of time, the troops could have stopped the war. This is the account he gave me half a century later. Frank Austin:  A day or two before Christmas, we were given Princess Mary's Golden Gift Box.  It was flat, gilt, and there were cigarettes on one side and pipe tobacco on the other and also a photo of Princess Mary, as she then was. On Christmas day, dawn broke.  And not a shot was fired. A little further down to the right we saw a white flag flying.  And several Germans came out, very slowly, and one officer was waving a white handkerchief.  We could see that there was a sort of ........armistice? They were very friendly. We gave them some of our rum, or rather our sergeant did, and we had some of their schnapps.  I can't remember what they gave us to eat.  I handed out one or two tins of Maconochie's M&V  [Meat and Veg] ration. I don't know what they thought of the bully beef others gave them! I remember sitting on a log - there were two Germans and my own sergeant as well - and they showed me their photographs of their wives and children.  One of them could speak English very well - he'd been a student and had had a job in the West End for some time.  He seemed to be politically conscious, because he asked the sergeant, I remember this very well, if he knew why we were fighting.   And of course we had no more idea than that we thought it was the right thing to be doing. This business went on all day, and a good many of us got rather drunk and they were actually in our trenches, and some of our lads (I didn't go myself) went up to their dug outs - I don't know what they got up to! There was football, I don't know whether it was a real football, or simply a lot of newspapers tied up with string (some said one thing and some the other), I didn't actually see it.  There was a game, on a flat piece of ground  between the trenches, with two piles of grey uniforms and two piles of khaki uniforms - and some sort of a ragtime game was arrived at. It seems incredible looking back on it. It must have worried the General Staff a whole lot.  Because when the dawn broke the following day, the Germans didn't come out of their line at first on Boxing Day morning, but to our surprise we heard the rattle of machine guns further off to our right.  I have heard that the Staff sent up a battalion of the Guards to open fire, and of course once the machine guns started up the battle was on once more.  As far as I was concerned that was the end of the Christmas celebrations.  Two nights later I was almost the last to leave the trenches, and we'd had no casualties worth talking about. I have often thought......all that slaughter that followed...... and yet the soldiers had the will to bring the war to an end,
