For two years, a knife-wielding predator terrorized the women of London — but when authorities finally made an arrest, the evidence was shakier than anyone wanted to admit. "The Monster" terrorized fashionable women by slashing their clothing and flesh, leading to a sensational manhunt that captured a suspect – but was he really the culprit?*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: In March 1788 Maria Smythe was attacked by a stranger who uttered some foul words, stabbed her, then ran. She survived, but was only the first of more than fifty women to suffer the same in London. This wasn't Jack The Ripper – he wouldn't come along for another 100 years. This was the Monster of London. (The Monster of London) *** On his first day walking to the bus stop alone before school, Etan Patz was abducted – and became one of the first children whose face ended up on a milk carton. (The Boy On The Milk Carton) *** If you are left-handed, you might be offended by one of the stories I have in this episode. But then, you lefties are all sinister anyway, right? (The Sinister Left-Handers) *** In 1827, young Maria Marten slipped into a red barn to meet her secret lover. It was the last time she would be seen alive. (The Red Barn Murder) *** It sounds like the makings of a paranormal slasher film – a woman is followed home one day by a paranormal entity – an entity that is angry because it used to be a human that was murdered. (The Haunting of Leah Lewis) *** Imagine your business is failing and you need to drum up customers, so you hire a consultant. “No problem,” he says. “All I need is a few things to get started… do you happen to have have any problems chopping off your closest living relative's hand?” Welcome to Muti magic that some say still takes place even today. (Murderous Muti Magic) *** Edward Howard Bell was a murderer on the run and evaded capture for close to twenty years. When finally captured, authorities found out they didn't just have a murderer… but a serial killer, who he claims had sent eleven young girls to heaven. What started as a perfectly innocent trip down mid-2000s Nickelodeon memory lane somehow turned into a reminder of why my producers no longer trust me with Google. We revisit Danny Phantom, arguably one of the greatest eras of kids' TV, and give Ember McLain the respect she deserves as an iconic, name-chanting, power-ballad-fueling villain who absolutely did not need to be searched with SafeSearch turned off. Also in this episode: confused producers, immediate browser-history deletion, and a brief lesson in what not to type into a work computer. And because it's the end of a very long year, we close things out with The Last Word—finding gratitude, perspective, and maybe even a little peace after everything this year threw at us… including our own poor decision-making.In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, one of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani 's appointees has resigned over social media posts she made more than a decade ago that featured antisemitic tropes, Mamdani's office said.New York City prosecutors asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate a murder conviction in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz. And in New Hampshire, A frantic search for the suspect in last weekend's mass shooting at Brown University ended at a storage facility where authorities discovered the man dead inside and then revealed he also was suspected of killing a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor.
Today in The Update Journal, we revisit the annual tradition that turns even the bravest among us into rule-writing tyrants: the 2025 Potluck. Yes, it's that magical time of year when everyone suddenly discovers they have dietary restrictions, allergies, or moral objections to dishes that have existed for centuries. This year, however, I've decided to do something bold. Something daring. Something historic. I'm retiring from cooking. Effective immediately. My apron is hung up. My spatula is in storage. My oven mitts have unionized and walked out. And then, as we wrap up the chaos of sign-up sheets, crockpots, and mystery casseroles, The Last Word tonight brings us back to something simple, something warm, something real: Thankfulness. Because despite the food debates, the last-minute store runs, the stove that always breaks at the worst possible moment, and the one coworker who insists their “famous” macaroni salad is a personality trait, we still gather, laugh, eat, and appreciate the people who make our days a little brighter. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Wednesday, a notorious 1979 missing-child case is headed to trial a third time after New York prosecutors vowed to retry the man whose murder conviction was recently overturned in the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz. The 70th and final conviction in a sweeping New York City corruption probe was secured, concluding a decade-long bribery scheme in which public housing employees steered work to contractors in exchange for bribes. And in Florida, the death of a teenager on a Carnival cruise ship earlier this month has been ruled a homicide, the latest development in a case that has drawn international attention and sparked intense speculation on social media.
A milk carton made a 6-year-old boy the most recognized missing children in American history, and now New York prosecutors say they will try his accused killer for a third time. The morning of Friday May 25, 1979, started out like just another day for Julie Patz; her husband Stan, a photographer; and their children, eight-year-old Shira, six-year-old Etan and two-year-old Ari. It was a busy morning. Julie ran a daycare out of her Soho loft at 113 Prince Street in New York City, and she was getting her own kids ready for the day and at the same time, preparing for the influx of kids who would be arriving soon. Shira didn’t want to roll out of bed, but Etan, who his family described as a sweet, loving and friendly boy, was excited to start the school day. Six-year-old Etan asked his mom if he could walk the two short blocks to the school bus stop alone - for the very first time. Since it was the last few weeks of the school year, his mom said that would be okay. Etan had a plan. He had a dollar in his pocket, which a neighborhood handyman had given him the day before when Etan helped him in his workshop. Etan was going to stop at the corner bodega at Prince and West Broadway, and buy a soda before getting on the bus. Julie walked Etan downstairs, and as she watched him walk down the street before going back upstairs, she told herself that it was only two blocks. That was the last time that Julie ever saw her son. This case became a huge story not just in New York but in the entire country. Etan Patz became the literal poster child for missing children, and Julie and her husband Stan were the living embodiment of every parent’s worst nightmare. What if your child disappeared one day, and you never found out what really happened to them? Forty-six years later, this case is still active. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is about abuse, missing, and murdered children. Listen with care.In preparation for Friday's new episode with Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, a replay of Andy Puglisi's case first released in June 2023, in two parts. There are many updates to this story, despite the decades-long mystery. In part one, we explore the haunting case of 10-year-old Andy Puglisi, the boy who vanished from his neighborhood, spotlighting the societal attitudes towards missing children during that time. The discussion delves into the failed police response, media portrayal, and subsequent changes in child protection laws.On Sunday, August 22, 1976, (we learn this is the actual date he was last seen), Andy Puglisi disappeared from a public pool in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, Andy's childhood friend and documentary filmmaker, spent years piecing together the events of that fateful day. Her decades-long investigation, highlighted in her documentary "Have You Seen Andy" and new podcast "Open Investigation," brings fresh perspectives to his case and others like his.It doesn't stop with Andy's story. We delve into the broader narrative of missing and murdered children in the 1970s, an era marked by systemic child abuse within the Catholic Church. This period saw high-profile cases like Etan Patz and, later, Adam Walsh, which led to the creation of crucial resources like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). We learn about Springfield boy, Danny Croteau, and the powerful forces that shielded his alleged killer, Father Richard R. Lavigne, a notorious child abuser who would later be convicted of molesting boys across Western Massachusetts, and the investigative work of journalists such as Kristen Lombardi, of the Boston Phoenix, whose work played a critical role in unmasking these crime against children.Crime of the Truest Kind - Episode 43 - What Happened To Andy Puglisi, Part OneSend a message to the showSupport the showFollow Instagram | Facebook | BlueSky | TikTok | Threads | YouTube For show notes & source information at CrimeoftheTruestKind.comGive the dogs a bone tip jar: buymeacoffee.com/truestkindBecome a patron: Patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkindThis podcast has minimal profanity but from time to time you get one or some curse words.
